I hadn't been here since 1999 and remembered it was good back then but generally not a NM restaurant that people talked about or as popular such as Tomasita's. The Pantry, etc... Wait time wasn't long. Staff was pretty friendly. Started with chips and salsa (not gratis) & the salsa had a nice kick to it. BFF ordered a combination plate with a hard taco and Xmas (he said spicy but flavorful). I had a bean and cheese sopaipilla with red and it was delicious and red was flavorful. I've been eating here for 20 years but i noticed a decline food in quality this week. We had two orders of roast beef quesadillas and both orders had large chunks of fat gristle we had to remove. Service was terrible. The bar tender was our server (we weren't seated at the bar) and he spent the entire time visiting with his non-employee friend who was drinking at the bar. Food was ok but I had chicken fajitas and found three pieces of tendon/gristle in the meat. The server delivered the check without asking if there was anything else we needed; to-go box, dessert, etc. I requested to have the check split and he became upset because "it would take a while." Came here with my family looking for traditional Native food. Food was not too bad, the meet from the tacos and quesadilla where good, my boyfriend liked his chicken quesadilla, I got the stuffed sopapilla with chicken and potato which was just a bed of hash browns with shredded chicken breast and a sopapilla with melted cheese on top (the cheese had a really good flavor, but I did expect something stuffed not just on top...). My dad had the "adobada" which was more of a beef with red chili, which was super spicy he couldn't really eat it. They bring to the table chips and salsa which they charge you for... and include a 25% tip if you have a party of 6 or more... we were 5 adults and a 4 year old who "counts" because he got a kids meal, so that made it 6 plates. The appetizer was green chili with cheese which had no flavor we had to add salt and when that didn't fix it we put the salsa that came with the chips in it, and it was a lot better then. The service was not bad, we did waited a long time for our food, and since we had been traveling all day we were hungry so we kept on eating the chips and got full by the time the food showed up. Your plate includes sopapillas that you eat with honey, and definitely that was the best part of all. Overall, I am disappointed because we were recommended to this place, and what really upset me was the fact that they added the 25% tip, and when I asked why the response was that is the way it is, I explained we were not notified of it and even though it says it on the menu, I never thought my kid was gonna be counted to reach the 6 party number. Some conflicting Yelp reviews almost led us elsewhere, but Tortilla Flats was a good find. We a the kind of a breakfast brunch and it was a convenient location to where we are staying. This was classic New Mexican Tex Mex southwestern but with a nice twist had a great local beer collection as well as classic Mexican beers. They had a nice Albuquerque Brown lager. I enjoyed a half of a breakfast burrito and a half of a carnitas omelette we shared those the carnitas omelette had brisket on top in the breakfast burrito was perfect and did not have too much potatoes.
