One of Soquel's best kept Secrets. Portions are appropriately sized for an adult human to consume in one sitting. Their enchiladas are very well presented and taste so, so, good. they use natural ingredients and mix great drinks. I often order flan after dinner and am often quite disappointed, but Tortilla Flats has one of the best flans I have ever had. Syrup is thin and golden like diluted honey and not overly sweet. you can actually taste the flan and enjoy it's texture. Very nice finish to an always enjoyable meal. Check them out around Dia de Los Muertos (October) for additional moles. Oh, and go early (around 5) to beat the rush. It's nice, you can get a table no problem and be finishing your drink or dessert when the place starts getting packed. read more

I've never had a problem here. I've been coming here since..... Since I can remember. The motivation for this review was my dinner tonight. I got their vegetarian flatland filling in a taco for the first time ever. Phenomenal. It's a combo of like sunflower seeds, peanuts, tomatoes and other stuff. It was so good! Overpriced but solid food that doesn't pretend to be gourmet and, in terms of ingredients, certainly doesn't merit the price tag. ($16 for two tamales, please. Also, the price for guac is "seasonal," and today 12/8/17 was a whopping $6 for a SMALL side order; that's at minimum a 300% mark up, if not more.) Seems like what you're paying for is the decorative atmosphere, which includes hyper-nationalistic, US-themed papel picado featuring the Statue of Liberty, the Capitol, bald eagles, etc. Hard to ignore the racialization of labor here--Someone's got to be making money on these $13.50(!) prickly pear margaritas, so I hope they're pooling tips. Try El Chipotle a few doors down for a Latinx-owned business, a much more diverse and creative menu, and where you can actually order a michelada. read more

This is one of the best places in Soquel Village to eat at. It's tiny inside, but packs a punch, you'll come back for more. They have so many options for all kinds of dietary restrictions. The flatland tostada is amazing, the green enchiladas are fabulous. Just can't say enough about how great the food is. The desserts are out of this world, made fresh by the owner, how cool is that?!?!!!! Just beware, I got a parking ticket in the lot behind the restaurant. I paid $7 for a soft taco tortilla, onions, guacamole and sour cream. Burrito for $7= soft taco tortilla "rolled" with carne asada which was $2 extra was a joke! Got from Airbnb review, but apparently they have not been to much else when it comes to Mexican food. Go to a food truck! They won't charge extra for carne asada and they will make a burrito, not a soft taco tortilla with onions. I don't usually write bad reviews, but people beware! In California no less! Expect more and go somewhere else. Use Yelp, filter to highest rating or ask someone you can trust to give you an honest opinion. The beer @ Beer Thirty just down the street was worth it and food offerings looked much better. DO NOT go to Tortilla Flats, under any circumstances if you want quality, quantity and a reasonable price Mexican food. read more

Loved this place maybe a decade ago. Over the past several years, quality of food has declined. I keep trying new items on the menu....only to be, once again, disappointed. Last night I tried the salmon dish...a small slice of salmon (OK tasting, but nothing special) surrounded by the driest ever rice and a big glob of black beans. Would have happily traded in the rice and beans for something fresh and tasty. It appears that much of the food comes out of cans and is microwaved. WAS a loyal customer for many years until the discovery of how there are far too many customers for the owner to care about individual problems. I got food poisoning there after eating a chicken tostada one day, and I was compensated after complaining to the owner more than once. I frequented the business with two friends regularly, and due to peer pressure I went back, until my elderly friend tripped on a jacket on the way to the bathroom. The space is limited, and often there are far too may people squeezed into the tiny space. There were people seated at the bar, and people standing behind them. The tables were full, and there was someone seated at the end of one of the tables toward the bar, and that person had their long jacket draped over the back of their chair. It is not real bright in the restaurant, so although my elderly friend is quite careful, she did trip and fall over the jacket, and she hit her head on the floor. Being such a loyal customer for many years, she thought it would be best to write a note to the owner to politely explain the situation which she did. It's been about 6 months now, and there has still been no response. We have since learned about dirty kitchen etiquette as well, and that is probably responsible for my food poisoning encounter, but that is something I can not prove since I don't work in the kitchen. Needless to say, we have discontinued our love affair with Tortilla Flats, and have filed for a divorce! read more

Went here for the first time today. The service was outstanding. All the employees that we dealt with were great. The food was ok. We didn't have any margaritas this time but they looked wonderful. OMG good, friendly, atmosphere, bar, drinks and really good Mexican food with flair. If there is a difference between Mexican food and Mexican cuisine this place is it. Sunday brunch, breaks the mouth with flavors, I had their shrimp and lobster crepes, mango margarita and expresso cheese cake and Ging found some other menu item to rave about. We're nuts about the place, then went back for passion fruit margarita and avocado key lime pie. Where do these awesome taste come from but the owner herself! The fact that this restaurant has four stars is misleading. This place is horrible! Not authentic at all. Small portions high prices and a cold waitress. She had no character. There was one waiter who joked with us about a lucky penny. He is the only reason I am giving this place 2 stars. Best mexican I've had in awhile.... I really think of mexican restaurants as falling into two types: Fancy, and Hole-in-the-Wall. This place is somewhere inbetween with regards to price range, but inside is very respectable and clean, and the carne asada super burrito is amazing. The management at this place has the worst customer service. Rude and a bit condescending. I couldnt tell you what the food is like because the gentleman would not seat us. They were having a special on mole's so I was excited to try. I think I may have been spoiled by good places like Oaxacan Kitchen, but the mole I had tasted much more like a poor family chain restaurant like Pedro's. A little greasy and not too fresh tasting. Tortilla Flats is not terrible, but it doesn't justify more than one visit. Definite Mexican food for old, white people. The best thing for our family was the good selection of vegetarian options. The "Flatland" nutty filling for enchiladas (or whatever) was actually pretty good. The service (5pm on Wednesday) was extremely rapid. Suspiciously so. In fact, the tortilla around my burrito was as white as driven snow and painfully hot. Microwave alert! What Mexican food place has to microwave their burritos? Just crappy ones, really, huh? The burrito was stuffed with sauteed veggies, which were underdone. No color to them, and the onions still tasted raw. And they were in pretty big chunks. We have eaten at Tortilla Flats many times and the food never disappoints. The chicken mole and carne asada are exceptional. Last time, I ordered one of the specials, a white fish with a light sauce with lemongrass and other delicious components. It was outstanding. They are also known to serve a fabulous margarita. It's also worth mentioning that their food is good to go. We often order takeout and always enjoy it, despite living over a 1/2 hour away. read more

Went to this place for a family dinner with intentions of getting some good authentic Mexican food. The place is a complete disappointment. We did find the unprofessional waitresses to be not so friendly. The food is mediocre at best. Once the order was placed, the food came out very fast, almost too fast to the point where it was sitting around waiting to go out. Salsa for the chips is served in tiny glasses. Driving up to SF from Monterey and checked yelp to find a place to feed my family and me on the way up...we all love Mexican food and the place got pretty good reviews...now I think that's primarily because reviewers were grading the margaritas. The place is charming, but be warned this restaurant is NOT a good value. The food is decent - not special - and the prices at first glance seem fair. Fair until you see the portion size. Primarily my issue with most restaurants is that the portions are too big. I am not a big eater by any stretch of the imagination - but $5.50 for a plate that bills itself as a carne asada burrito - which was, once it arrived at our table, the size of a very *small* enchilada is just not cool. I actually had to ask our very charming waitress if the kitchen mistakenly sent out an enchilada (it was also rolled in a taco-size tortilla, not wrapped like a burrito) in place of the burrito I was expecting to share with my honey... My kids liked their dishes enough... The guacamole was less a guacamole than crushed avocado - but the bar graciously provided some lime, so I was able to salvage that and it made up the bulk of my lunch. I was really excited to try this spot so took my out of town family here for dinner. The service was great but we were all disappionted with the food. I had the fish taco and it was, by far, the most uninspiring I've ever had. It was bland and I was still hungry when we left. Everyone else said their food was below average. On a good note, the house margaritas were great. Overall, overpriced for what you get and there are plenty of amazing mexican joints in town so I recommend spending your pretty pennies elsewhere. read more

The rice and beans had absolutely 0 flavor. Good thing we ate so many chips. Margaritas were bad with huge ice chunks in it.
