I was significantly overcharged for my food. The waitress seemed to have great difficulty understanding that side dishes were supposed to come with the dinners I ordered--as printed in the menu. I ordered two 6.99 enchilada dinners that are supposed to each come with a side of meat. I asked for a taco in place of one side, but even if that had been added on to the total--and I'm pretty sure it was--it should not have been that expensive. I ended up paying $25 for 2 enchilada dinners (6.99 each), one fountain drink (1.50), and the chips and salsa (1.50). I was most likely charged extra for the taco, even though I asked for it in place of the plate of meat--so that would be 1.75. I was not given a bill/check. I was not given a receipt that lists the items--just a credit card receipt. There is no way that these dishes would amount to $25. To be honest, the fact that I was not given a real bill makes me think it was more than just a mistake. In my opinion, it comes across as sneaky. The food was okay. Enchiladas were good (small though), but the shredded beef taco was almost flavorless. The carne asada was the opposite of flavorless--extremely salty. The food was also not very hot. The music was obnoxiously loud. I'm also not a fan of the business model here. This is the kind of food that you would buy at a stand in Mexico or SoCal, but here you have to be waited on by the staff and pay a tip. I prefer paying for what I want up front, so I know that I'm getting what I paid for, and then going home. I don't want to be forced to communicate to a waitress who has difficulty understanding her own menu, pay her a tip, and possibly get bamboozled when I get to the counter to pay for it (like I just was). Congratulations Tortilleria! You got a few more of my hard earned dollars this time, but you won't be getting any more. I definitely won't be coming back. read more

Excellent excellent food. We stopped here from Branson on our way back to STL and had the most delicious food. My family is from northern Mexico so when the waitress said the owners are from Durango, we knew the food would be good. I had the Chilaquiles with 2 fried eggs on top. The red sauce was so thick and authentic, just like my grandma made. The rice perfectly moist, the beans had great flavor. My husband had the shredded beef burrito and ate every morsel of it. Half and half here. The beef taco was outstanding. The serving of guacamole was very generous. The salsa is fresh. The fish tacos were okay. The ceviche had fake crab meat. The chilie rejanno was terrible. To their credit the staff quickly gave us a gift certificate or $20 to come back. We live out of town so I gave it to a local friend. I say that with dismay because I was so leery of going to so-called "Mexican" restaurants only to be served tex-mex crap that tastes like "nachos" no better than you would expect at the concession stand at a movie theater. Yea- the velveta cheese, state chips, and canned chili-like toppings -Boo. Torilleria Perces was really good. I've had the tacos and tamales. Yes they have fish tacos! Yay! It's a small, simple,tidy casual Mexican restaurant with good service and good prices. You'll be greeted with a basket of fresh chips, salsa and you can get pico and other spicy sauces as well. The ingredients are zesty and fresh --a quality important to me in Mexican fare. They use the good small thick soft taco shells which I also like. A good bet for your first visit may be Taco Tuesdays (tacos for one buck each) or Tamale Thursdays also a buck a piece. Three of either is quite a bit for me after chowing down on chips. I usually order a pico or guacamole side too. Summary: Does Tortilleria deserve a 4 star rating? Maybe not, but since it is in Springfield, Mo and most other places are CA-CA by comparison, I decided to toss in the extra star to my original 3 stars. It's good to see a casual type true Mexican restaurant that "gets it" understands this regional type of authentic Mexican food (it;s tex mex done right). If you understand the difference, you'll appreciate my recommendation. If you like tomitillo and cilantro and flavorful mexican food, you will enjoy Tortilleria Perces Sure there is the 'ol standby Mexican Villa but we all know this isn't Mexican food, it's Springfeidl styled Mexican food just like Cashew Chicken is not Asain-- it's Springfield-ized hillbilly version of Mexican food -- good but not Mexican food. I would like to see more regional choices of Mexican restaurants in Springfield (yes there are regions in Mexico just like other countries that have vastly different varieties of food than just tex mex or baja). Excellent REAL MEXICAN food! Not that chain crap! The real deal! The food is great, portions are always more than I can put away, and the staff and owner always make you feel welcomed. I have gone here four times and it has never disappointed me! I would take the harshest critique here hands down they would walk away happy. If you ever have had authentic Mexican food you'll love this place and keep coming back. I wish I could keep this place to myself and friends but with food this good I have a moral and ethical obligation to tell as many people about it as possible. Recommended. This is Latino food from the heart. ZERO atmosphere, this is pure cooking like your Mexican Grandmother would cook...if you were lucky enough to have a mexican grandmother. We just checked out Tortilleria Perches finally after noticing the great reviews for years. My husband had one of the Saturday specials, a shrimp soup with plenty of cabbage, potato & spices. He really enjoyed it. I was pleased to hear they do their breakfast offerings at any time of day and went with the chilaquiles topped by two eggs, sunny side up. It came with beans and rice which I couldn't even finish because the portion was so generous. It was really good and different from anything else I've ordered at Mexican restaurants locally. I would come back and try a lot of other items that sounded good on their menu. We came in pretty early for dinner and the restaurant filled up very quickly. True story! My husband and I had just moved to the area and we had been unpacking all day. We finally decided to stop to eat, and Yelp said there was a Mexican place called Perches that makes homemade tortillas. We called them. Since they were closing in 15 min, we were ordering to go. The owner answers and says "Come on in!" I say "No, no! You are about to close! We will order to go!" He says "Don't you worry about that, you come on in, we will be waiting for you!" And when we got there, he had a table waiting for us, set with waters, chips and salsa! And the best part? Food is amazing! His mom is the cook and she knows what she's doing!!! This has become our "go to" place for Mexican! And they said there was no good Mexican food in Springfield! Hah! WRONG! Perches hits the top of the rating scale on food, service AND pricing!!! Yes overall the place is a little tight on dinning space but just try the back room plenty of seating there. It does get crowded at certain times and days, its worth the wait. My wife and I live in Kansas City, but we go here EVERY time we are in Springfield because this place has killer food! Especially the tacos. We always get the carnitas and barbacoa. The only thing I would like tweaked is the chips and salsa. The chips are too thick for my liking. They are made from the homemade tortillas they make right there, which is awesome when it comes to the tacos and part of what makes them so good, but way too thick for chips. And the red sauce needs to have less onion and more red to it, or tomato base. The onion flavor is just overpowering. But the green sauce is really good and we just get that. Tortilleria Perches on W Sunshine is by far THE most authentic Mexican restaurant in Springfield. With cactus (napole) and menudo, pozole (delicious), tasty fish tacos, fresh tamales, caldo de res is full of chunks of ingredients to dig into. Anything with pulled pork is phenomenal, the pork is slow cooked and tender as can be, the way meat shold be. The chili verde is addictive as is the napole. The tacos are also delicious with fresh ingredients and are examples of what real tacos are supposed to be like - little do most Americans realize. Even their drinks are fresh: watermelon, hibiscus tea, and more - even better than factory soda Jarritos though they have those too. They also have sodas not from around here that use cane sugar. I recommend the grapefruit soda. The fish tacos are well balanced with fresh ingredients and accompanying sauce to add just enough of an additional element to tie it all together. I've never had a bad meal have been known to go there once a week for a fix. Their tortillas are made fresh daily and you can even order breakfast all the time. A friend had a burrito which was the biggest burrito I've ever seen on a plate and said it was the best she ever had. To my amazement, she ate the whole thing. First time we went the food was sub-par (we went because we heard the tamales were amazing, the ones we had were very dry and just ok) and they charged us for chips and salsa. We didn't go back for a couple years. We went for breakfast once because I really wanted a good breakfast burrito. My burrito was ok, the Machaca Burrito my wife got was delicious (she said it was too spicy though). We've gone back a few time for breakfast and I've gotten something different every time, but my wife always gets the Machaca and I've always been disappointed. I was very pleasantly surprised at this unassuming mexican joint located in a strip mall in Springfield! We came here with a big group of friends on a Sunday and they had recently expanded, so we were able to sit at a table with our entire group of 12 or so. Bonus points for accommodations. Almost immediately they put out some kind of bean soup for everyone as an appetizer, I suppose, along with chips and salsa. From what I gather, this was a Sunday special. Yay for free food! Sadly, I can't remember what I had exactly, but I remember it had potatoes and egg and it was wonderful! The food seemed very authentic and certainly not something you'd normally get in a Springfield mexican place. The prices were also cheap from what I remember and I would definitely return. I took off one star just because a few of our orders came out wrong. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I moved to the Midwest 27 years ago. One of the many things I've missed about my hometown, is the wide variety of authentic ethnic cuisines, and the most prevalent was Mexican. Yes, this area does have a lot to offer, but if you never tasted what we refer to as authentic, then you have no idea what a SoCal native means by this term. I asked a question in this regard on a Facebook page dedicated to local eateries, and received countless suggestions. Then the owner of this establishment invited my family and I to try her offerings here. We came in, and it instantly transported me back home. The decor was great, and the festive music they had playing made it hard to not get up and dance. The place was clean, and comfy, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered, and received our food fairly quickly. The flavors and portions did not disappoint either, with maybe the chicken being a bit under seasoned, we really had no complaints. Everything was amazingly wonderful, and the atmosphere was festive, and the staff were great. The prices were very reasonable, and the service was well worth the generous tip we left them.
