The food was very good. I wasn't too thrilled with their steak tacos. They were decent sized, but only one corn tortilla per taco, (they should use 2), and the texture and flavor of the steak was ok, just not what I'm used to back home in Chicago, Chicago Heights to be exact. A lot of Mexican stores and restaurants there. You know it's going to be good when most of the employees don't speak English. The tamales were really good. I will definitely be going back. I look forward to trying their menudo. Something most places back home only made on Sundays. I do hope the rest of their menu is as good as the few items I've had so far. Went for lunch, on a Tuesday, at the suggestion of a friend. The food, service and prices are 5 star great. Food is as good or better than the majority of Mexican restaurants I've been to in the area. (I am used to west coast Mexican food) What confused/disappointed me was, what I planned to order (chile relleno dinner) is only available on Friday's. What? I've never encountered that in a Mexican restaurant. It seems there are some dishes only available on certain days. Strange. Other than that, really enjoyed our lunch. read more

Very good, perhaps the best I've had in Springfield so far, but less amazing than I was hoping for. I ended up not being blown away by the Guisado de Barbacoa that I ordered, though the homemade from masa corn tortillas that accompanied it were a neat touch. I will definitely return and try some other items on the menu that piqued my interest a little more (this particular dish was a favorite of my server's). Great food, great service, great environment, and a great price! The food is so authentic, and everything is so fresh. Even the chips and salsa are to die for, and don't even get me started about the enchiladas. Jesus (owner) told me that they make their tortillas from scratch, and I can definitely tell. 10/10 would reccomend. read more

The service at this place was great. The man running the cashier stepped up to seat us because everyone else was busy. Tables had just been cleaned, and a server promptly dropped of chips & salsa and took drink orders. If it was just service, I would rate this place higher, because I was impressed with how friendly and efficient our busy server was. Food, on the other hand, was another story. The carne asada in my tacos was more like boiled chunks of beef, reheated in pork grease, and nothing like the street tacos I was hoping for. Barbacoa had a flavor I never had before, and never want again. Tortillas couldn't even survive more than two bites before they tore apart from all the grease. Salsa served with tacos was hot but lacking in any flavor. Only thing that really seemed authentic to me was the raw chopped onions throw on the tacos. Maybe tacos are simply terrible here, and other dishes are great, but I cannot confirm or deny that as I only tried that tacos. Perhaps I'll return to try other parts of the menu, but this won't be on my taco Tuesday list. read more

I want to start this review by saying I used to absolutely love this place... I probably went there twice a week just for the salsa alone. I just got home from the restaurant from ordering takeout because you're not able to eat in the restaurant because of the coronavirus... When the girl brought my food out to my car I noticed that even though I had spent $14 for food that there was no chips and salsa. I was then told that for takeout orders you do not get chips and salsa it is an up charge... So I called and asked to talk to the owner to find out why. He literally told me that they only offer free chips and salsa to people who come into the restaurant because they are able to up charge them . He continued to say that it costs them too much money and they lose too much money on the little 2 ounce to go container and the tiny bag of chips and the salsa that goes in the container which probably will total them about a dollar at Max food cost. then I came home and open my food ... my chicken fajitas are barely cooked the peppers and the onions are completely raw I am re-cooking them right now on my stove as I write this . I called back to talk to the owner about my food and when I did... I heard the girl that answered the phone say "she wants to talk to you again this time it's about the food "and then they started LAUGHING and then the owner refused to come to the phone . I will never be going back to Tortilleria perches ever. I try very hard to spend my money at local businesses especially in this time of need and I would think that even if you don't give chips and salsa to the takeout customers, because of the fact that there is no way that I can eat IN your store and give you an opportunity to upsell me, that maybe you would give us a thank you by giving us a dollars worth of chips and salsa . So my review is not about the food is absolutely about the service and the way I was treated today... I guess as long as you don't have any complaints they're really really nice to you but when you do have a complaint ... you really don't deserve their time of day. A wonderful dining experience. My wife and I both love Mexican cuisine and Tortilleria Perches is now our favorite Mexican restaurant. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised with just how fresh the ingredients were. From the salsa and chips to the exceptionally seasons meats, you can tell the owners care about the food they serve. We both ordered burritos, and we couldn't help but say each time we eat the tortilla how fresh and perfect it was. We will be returning often, next up is Taco Tuesday's! read more

The salsa, chips & chunky guacamole was excellent. I ordered shrimp fajitas. My shrimp had the tails on them. They didn't come with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, pico , sour cream or guacamole so eating them seemed dry. I asked for shredded cheese and was charged $1 for about 2 tablespoons of cheese. I suggested my friend and I go eat lunch at Tortillaria because I have heard good things and it was also Taco Tuesdays so we could get tacos for $1. The environment of this restaurant is less than appealing. It is located in a strip mall and very small inside. They literally put so many tables so close together and up against walls that you seriously feel so uncomfortable that you can't wait to leave. The service was good, the waiter was very prompt. Hence the two stars. As for the food, to say we were unimpressed is an understatement. The $1 tacos were cold and small. The chicken is not shredded. My friend had to spit out a bone that was in the chicken. The chicken was literally served cold. The tortilla shells were bland. The salsa had no taste. Maybe we got the wrong thing. Finally a Mexican restaurant in Springfield that got it right. The authenticity and customer service were among the best! I had tacos on a Tuesday,imagine that. I had 2 carne asada, 1 barbacoa, and 1 chicken. I would rate them in that order as well, with chicken bringing up the rear and a close race between the barbacoa and asada. They were very delicious all of them! The hole in the wall atmosphere is perfect, although on taco Tuesday it was a bit cramped with my wife and two daughters. However, even though it was busy we received our food promptly and the owner brought it out to us himself. Now that I've mentioned the owner i have a few things to say. Not only was he courteous and check on us as much as he could, he even brought us extra silverware for our 5 year old daughter without us even asking. He then proceded to bring our daughters food first because he noticed she was getting a bit restless and let us know how he knows how it is because he also has a young daughter. It truly is the simple things that count. When you connect with a customer in a caring manner, that speaks volumes! Now I'm pretty humble when it comes to asking for discounts for my service and I very rarely do but Mr. Perches spotted my I.D. in my wallet and was kind enough to give me and my family a military discount. Once again it's the simple things! All in all I had a great exoerience here. The food is the best in its class in Springfield and the service in some of the best I have ever received. A perfect five stars! Woohoo and it really doesn't get any better than this. Not only is the food excellent and cheap, but they have a great selection of beers as well. I wish it was about 3 hours closer to home. Thank you Springfield Yelpers for directing us here. It's not a place you'd stumble upon naturally. In fact, if you're coming from the East as we were, it's about 9 miles out of the way. It's worth it. I had the Guisado Barbacoa dinner. This is described as shredded beef with pico de gallo and a "family recipe seasoning." Not so sure about the family recipe, but it was excellend barbacoa. We asked for some salsa mas picante and they brought a couple of variations, both were delicious. I so wish we lived closer. The food is not only good, but cheap. $1.75 for a tostada? Of course I don't know how big they are, but based on what we had, it would be delicious, I'm sure. If we're ever in Springfield, or within a half hour drive, we'll be back. read more

Perfect flavors, perfect staff, amazing customer service, clean establishment, they give you good portion sizes. This was a quick stop on our drive back home and as we were getting ready to exit town we turned around because we had just taken the first bite out of the tacos and yes the food is that good!! It will make you drive back for some more. We tried to stock up for the drive but sadly the food is too good to save, we ate it all in a few hours and even thought about turning around again even though we were 3 hours away. Perches used to be great before it became the place the be for Mexican food. Around that time, the management also decided that their profit margins were not big enough. But instead of simply raising the prices, they reduced the quality and the quantity of the food. Also, make sure that you get your bill itemized and have the waitress write down the exact amount you are being charged. Our bill was always different even though we ordered exact same food every time. In fact, the main guy who checks you out is known to add extra items as several of my friends complained about that. read more

Terrible environment. It was clearly used as an office space previously and they compensated by cramming too many tables in an awkward set up. My boyfriend and I felt uncomfortable the entire time. Their chips and salsa was not very good as well as having an extremely limited menu option that solely included meat and being a vegetarian, I found the fact that they had no vegetable options extremely disappointing. Gosh. I hate to join the vast throng of people already reviewing this place and earning it some recognition, but I just need to testify that its high rating is very well deserved. Sweet and simple: what I love about this place is the authenticity of dishes, the ice-cold, delicious selection of Mexican soda (strawberry Jarritos - GET AT ME), and the specials. On Taco Tuesdays, a variety of tacos are just a dollar each. They're seemingly small, soft-shell tacos, but three or four will fill you up just fine. Personally, I always get two ground beef tacos and a pork tamale for less than $5, strawberry Jarritos excluded. The tamales are also incredible and seem to be pretty much exclusively made by the owner of Perches, an older man who also did an excellent job of serving us last night. Did I mentioned it's pretty much a family operation? And did I mention Tamale Thursday? And did I mention the cute Mexican knick-knacks and kitchen items available in the front? And did I... You know what, whatever. Just go and see for yourself. What I do want to add right quick that hasn't been highlighted enough in the top-most reviews is that the house hot salsa is actually really freakin' hot. Completely Authentic... No canned food here! This isn't Tex-Mex style that some are used to. Everything is homemade from the beans and tamales to the tortillas and menudo just like it has been since it opened seven years ago. It has now expanded to have more room for customers. This place is a hidden gem. Walking in, we were greeted and welcomed in the friendliest fashion I've seen. I didn't feel like I was walking into a restaurant to grab a bite to eat, but that I was being welcomed into the home of a friend to enjoy a meal. A great first impression. While I do prefer my tortilla chips a little thinner than what they have at Tortilleria Perches (my only-albeit small-complaint), the salsa which comes with them is very good. The food here is authentic, fresh, and delicious. My girlfriend ordered enchiladas which were very good. I ordered chilaquiles and a shredded beef taco on the side. The taco was ridiculously good... nothing fancy... just good ingredients done simply and done well, just what cooking should be. The chilaquiles were the best I've ever had, and I've had some good ones over the years. I regret not catching the name of the gentlemen who was there, but we talked a bit with him as we ate about our recent trip, the food on the menu, etc. I mentioned I had seen the albondigas (meatball soup) on the menu and a couple of minutes later he brought out a small sample meatball with some broth and veggies to sample. The veggies were all soft (but not mushy) and cooked perfectly. The meatball was delicious and provided the perfect texture to complement the vegetables. The rice and beans which came with our meals were nothing short of amazing. Simple 5-Star food with outstanding 5-star service. This is, by far, the easiest 5-star rating I've given to a restaurant... and at awesome prices. We'll definitely tell people, and be back again. I imagine as word of this place grows, it will become difficult to find a seat in the small restaurant. read more
