I really like good Mexican food. It is hard to find authentic stuff. A lot of people say they are authentic but they taste the same as the next place. Tortilleria is different. They make their tortillas, chips, tacos, and salsa from scratch. They also have daily specials that are truly authentic Mexican dishes. The server, Jesus, is super friendly and passionate about his food. It doesn't look like much when you walk up and in to the restaurant but the food is excellent. It is me and my wife's Friday ritual right now. It is definitely a must. read more

It's nice to find an authentic Mexican food restaurant. I've eaten here more than a few times searching for that one dish that I can say I've had enough but have failed time after time. I lived near Guadalajara, Mexico for several months earlier this year, and this is the only Mexican restaurant I have eaten at in Springfield that is exactly like the delicious food I bought from street vendors in Mexico. I can see why Springfield natives might not like it, because the food isn't all drowned in grease and smothered in cheddar cheese and red enchilada sauce, but for those who want to have REAL tacos (open-faced on homemade corn tortillas, garnished with cilantro and onions), tostadas de ceviche, pozole, and tamales, this is the place. read more

I'm sorry, but, much like the movie Frozen, I don't get it. I assume all of the hoopla is for their tamales, which I didn't try. The shredded chicken on my nachos tasted like it was from last week. So gross! My husband's burrito was pretty good, though. The beans and rice were good, too. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes. The guacamole tasted pretty fresh. I guess I simply ordered the wrong thing? I was excited to finally try this place, since it always seems to be on the 417 magazine's best list. I was so disappointed. There is so much asphalt. A warren of parking lots: a nexus of highway. Hiding out behind corporate America's Pizza Hut and Firestone, betwixt the Huxley-an "Alpha Tots" (which I assume is a day care center, not a place where they manufacture the top-rate corporeal genetic preferences) and an Eastern Nail Salon, Tortilleria Perches is understandably overlooked by Springfield's masses. That's OK. Let them have their Mexican Villa's and their Cielito Lindo's, their Pattersons and their Meyers, their routines and their timidity. The other reviews have stated it well. Your open, house-made corn tortilla shell-tacos: protein, onion, cilantro, lime. Salsa Verdes y Rojas. House-mixed horchada. Smaller menus. Daily specials. Menudo. Cachete. Lengua: words that most Springfieldian's don't know and don't want to know. This is a place where even the rice and beans are enjoyable. Of course, "authentic". But its also "honest". What most people probably miss here is that this business is operated by and as a family. Its obvious after watching a couple of their interactions. But it also serves as a cultural epicenter for Hispanics, and gringos as well. This is part of my neighborhood now and its wonderful. Tortilla shells to-go, where families cook at home. Little Mexican candies for little children. Coronas, Negras, Tecates, and Mother's. Pure-cane Coca Cola, Pepsi and Jarritos. Cinco de Mayo block parties--last year with the fluke snow we had, it was moved inside, then, re-partied a hot and sunny month later where men brought fancy cars and fancy boots. Men and women sang, drank beer and danced. Even with the Firestone and Pizza Hut as a backdrop, the party was still charming. Perches demonstrates all those themes the food-TV crowd has been expounding for years: local made, family operated, melting pot, handmade, perseverance, etc. ad-nauseum. Do everything on the menu. Ask for house-fried chips (a request only insiders know about). Ask for queso. Anything pork. Cachete (that's cheek friends). Chipotle Sauce. So many things. Introduce yourself to Jesus, or his delightful mother-either of which will be operating the cash box, because you'll be seeing them soon. read more

Great authentic Mexican food in Springfield! It took me a while to discover this little gem but once I did I've become a regular. Most "ethnic" restaurants in Springfield like to localize the food, heck we are famous for creating one of the worst Chinese food dishes "Springfield Style Cashew Chicken", so it's nice and unusual to find authentic food in this town. I don't really understand why this place is so highly rated. The cuisine here is very standard "Americanized" Mexican food (ie you might as well go to Qdoba). I went to this hole in the wall restaurant with an open mind, but was really disappointed overall. Honestly nothing on the menu really even stood out. Each of our entrees was a protein drowned in a canned sauce, rice, refried beans, and chips. The salsa wasn't even spicy in the last. How is that authentic??? I doubt commenters describing the dining experience as "authentic" have ever been outside the state of Missouri. This is the same subset of diners that think cashew chicken is also authentic. There's no particular reason to go here other than to get the same generic canned Mexican food experience available in nearly every rural small town. read more

You absolutely will not find better Mexican food in Springfield. Here are some things to try: chips with anything (salsa, guac, queso) -- they are all excellent, but they don't bring them to your table as freebies Shredded beef burrito with queso on top. The burrito is absolutely STUFFED with high-quality meat, at a very reasonable price. If you order it as the "plate" you will receive sides of rice and beans, both of which are absolutely top-notch Carnitas torta (sandwich) -- sometimes the torta is listed as a special, but they may have the bread anyway and will make it for you -- just ask. This sandwich is so simple, but so perfect -- just pork, guac, mayo, lettuce, tomato, on delicious bread. Chilaquiles -- sometimes they are listed as a special, but I think they'll make them for you anytime you want -- make sure to request the 2 over-easy fried eggs on top Nopales plate -- currently available as a special on Wednesdays -- this gorgeous stew of pork and cactus is quite literally one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted Their soups -- always huge, hearty, and delicious... particularly the chicken soup I have been here many, many times, and I have NEVER been disappointed, except for the times when I've asked if tortas were available that day and found out they weren't. Not only is the food great, the family that runs this place are just the nicest people you'll ever meet. It feels like you're having dinner at their house. I've often wished they'd open a bigger place, but I'm afraid that might spoil something about the experience. Today was the first time I have eaten at Tortilleria Perches, and it won't be the last. I loved the atmosphere especially the music. The food was fantastic! I ordered tamales (because I can't seem to get good tamales here in Springfield, and I'm on a quest to find tasty tamales) and a chicken taco. The fresh tortilla was perfect! I could tell the pork tamales were fresh, and they were great. My husband ordered the Barbacoa tostada and an enchilada. He said he loved the meat (except that he preferred it be seasoned a little more with salt). I recommend this restaurant above all other mexican restaurants in town. read more

Wife and I stopped in and wanted to try it, worst mistake ever. The salsa tasted like salt and onions. When we got our food, the meat had no seasoning and very soupy. The only time we ever just wanted to leave and eat somewhere else. When my wife said something to the waitress, she started talking to the manger in Spanish, very rude. Absolutely the best AUTHENTIC Mexican food in Springfield period. I don't know what to recommend because everything is great. Very fresh, made on premises by expert chefs. The service is outstanding and you will always find one of the owners on premises and working alongside the other employees. They obviosely take a great deal of pride in their business and it is reflected in the quality. Very impressive to see a family start a business like this and make it such a success basically all by word of mouth, hard work and dedication to quality.. I find it humorous to read the handful of negative reviews on here. I guess when you are use to chains like, Mexican Villas, Cantina Laredo and Taco Bell you expect different because you don't know any better. You see the negative reviews complain because this place does not "Americanize" (i.e. dump shredded iceberg lettuce, microwaved liquid canned "cheese product" and sour cream on top of everything): their items like they are use to at garbage "Mexican" food place like Mexican Villa and the like. Hilarious. If you have lived outside of SW Missouri and have been able to travel extensively to experience some excellent authentic ethnic food from different countries then you will love this place. We stopped in here while traveling through Springfield. Really enjoyed it. I had the Chile Relleno dinner and a shredded beef taco while my wife tried the carnitas. All were great. Everyone was very friendly. One thing to note is that they apparently keep all the tickets at the counter as our server never came by to drop it off. Our favorite place for Mexican food is Tortilleria Perches. Jesus, the owner, is always so friendly and greets us by name each time. If you are looking for authenticity, you will find it here. Hubby and I always order tacos or burritos with the pulled pork - the pulled pork is the most amazing meat there. Their green sauce is excellent and their salsa is great with their homemade chips. Tip: make sure to get to Tortilleria Perches on Tuesdays when they offer $0.99 tacos.
