I followed Matt Mellott from the Grand St. location to the new FlatIron salon. Why? Because he is AWESOME! I have straight, limp hair, and when I leave Spoke & Weal, I feel like a goddess. About the salon: it's lovely. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. The salon is spacious, light and airy. It's got a great vibe without trying too hard. Back to the haircut: Spoke & Weal uses a special technique where they cut your hair dry. The results are exceptional - no surprises about cutting the hair too short, and you get great hair volume and movement. Don't worry, you still get a great shampoo with Aveda products (they smell so nice), AND a head massage. One other thing I adore about Matt is that he never rushes. He sits down with you first and has a good chat about what you want. It's a great conversation. He'll question you and make suggestions, clarify what you do and do not want. After years of going to many salons and trying to connect with a colorist I've finally found the perfect place. I booked an appointment with Eric and he fulfilled all my dreams. I have difficult AF hair to color, it can turn brassy very quick. He managed to do everything that I've asked for and more. I went for a balayage manageable type look, I wanted to lighten my very dark hair. I also get my haircut with Sarah who are the soho location. This post is long overdue! Akeem did my hair a few weeks ago and it was so so so fabulous. I got so many compliments. I was there for a wash, cut, blow &style. I was super happy when I left because he listened to exactly what I wanted to get done. He made it extra special when I told him it was for my birthday. The salon was also upto COVID standards. Temperature check when you get there, social distancing and everyone at all times had masks on....even while dealing with blow dryer heat! Overall, very delighted. I'd heard of Spoke & Weal from a friend who had visited their Soho location and sang their praises. Recently, I was trying to book a haircut and found that they had opened a new location closer to where I live. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were appointments available the next day (a Saturday) - a rarity in NYC, where you often have to book a month in advance to get a slot that isn't in the middle of a weekday. I'm guessing the availability is because this is still a relatively new location, but hopefully it remains this easy to get an appointment going forward... :) I booked with Victoria, who I remembered from Yelp reviews of the Soho location. My requests were fairly simple - I hadn't cut my hair in a while and just wanted a little bit off the ends, more layers/shaping, and overall thinning out (I have super thick hair). From start to finish, she was very efficient and listened to my requests while still applying her hair cutting expertise to give me a great finished look. They start with a scalp massage (you get to pick an essential oil, peppermint or lavender!), then shampoo, cut, and style. And finally, one of my biggest pet peeves at salons is that they always blow out your hair at the end, which in my opinion just doesn't look good on me/my hair texture. Victoria blow dried my hair straight and put a little bit of wave in with a flat iron - it looked so good that I'm considering getting a flat iron so I can do it at home (me, a girl who doesn't blow dry, use styling products, or even brush my hair most days). Long story short: I don't remember the last time I left a hair salon excited about my haircut - most times I just think "eh it looks fine". But I'm already looking into booking my next appointment with Victoria, because there's no way her schedule is going to stay open for long. She isn't inexpensive, but considering I only cut my hair 3 times or so a year, she's totally worth every penny. read more

Akeem was amazing. He conferred with me on what I wanted with my haircut and had suggestions when I wanted them but wasn't pushy or anything like that. He is precise and it shows, this is by far this best haircut I have gotten in a while. And personally, I can get a little anxious when hairdressers try to chat me up during an appointment, which Akeem got wind of pretty quickly and respected. We had a couple jokes during the appointment but no obligatory small talk, which I GREATLY appreciated. If you are one to like to talk during an appointment though, he seems like a very chill and easy going person who would be easy and willing to talk to, so it's win win. The salon was very nice and clean and had an overall feel of a spa, including rooms where you change into a robe or comfy t-shirt and a peppermint or lavender oil-scented head and shoulder massage before getting your hair washed. Had a great experience getting my haircut at Spoke & Weal. The Flatiron salon is very open and airy and clean. My stylist Akeem was awesome. He was very attentive to my hair needs and concerns regarding the look I was going for and continued to check in with me during the entire process making sure I was comfortable with the direction of the cut/style. He took into account that I have relatively fine hair with not a tremendous amount of density, and the end result was just what I was looking for: something simple and effortless with the feeling of fuller hair and slightly more bounce. I showed him photos of what I was looking to have done and asked his opinion on what might work best on me. Akeem gave an incredibly professional and detailed explanation about the way my hair fell naturally, where there was too much weight, and how he would work through the cutting process. He is SO meticulous and precise and every layer he built was so natural! My hair is now so light while still looking full and texturized! I went to get a keratin treatment and trim. I came in a bit late but they were very flexible with time. To be honest I do think it was overpriced, especially the trim.
