Tried to get in here last week and got here at 6:20 and they were already closed. We weren't too happy but decided to give them another shot. We had been to their location in Sanborn years ago and loved it. Ordered a Gustavo ,Ybor,Mexican Street corn Mac & cheese and two Alfajores. Everything was great and of the two sandwiches. The Gustavo was too spicy that it overwhelmed the other flavors in the sandwich. The bread was a winner. The Ybor was very good. The MSCM&C was also to spicy and hid the flavors. You place your order at the counter and your order takes about 15 minutes. You can order ahead. The ambiance is plain Jane and very sterile but clean. . The music was way too loud. read more

The only things I had here-- first time, last Tuesday-- were the Agave Lime Slaw, Mac 'n Cheese, and the 420 Style Fries. Will try a sandwich next time. The other reviews here pretty much say it all, so my main reason for adding anything is to comment on their use of metal trays instead of plates, a growing custom it seems, and fine by me. But.... We said, when asked, that we were dining in. The 420 Fries came boxed on the parchment lined tray. I'd suggest when the customer is eating in that they save the box and assemble meals that come in a box for take-out directly onto the tray. It would make for a much more attractive dining experience. The fries: small potato wedges. The 420: if poutine and nachos got married and had a baby, they'd name it 420. They were very good. A health-conscious note: menu suggestion for those watching carbs says anything that comes on bread can be served on saffron rice or on power grains, or on a large flour tortilla, or on salad greens. I am so madly and deeply in love with the food here! OMG!!! It's crazy just how good it is. I stopped in one day after googling what food was near me. I forgot that they moved to Kenmore and the restaurant was only a block from where I was. Score!!! I decided right then and there that I was going to buy a smorgasbord of food. I went with the Gustavo, Ybor, Chivito, Bonita, Cubano Ramen, Elote pasta salad, watermelon agua fresca, and tres leches cake. Whew!!!! Baby, I wanted to give them my whole paycheck. It was worth every penny. My husband thought I was insane when I came home but then he started eating and he understood. The food is impeccable. We both agreed that the winner of the all the sandwhiches was the Gustavo. That's what we both plan on getting the next time we go. I'm not a big of tuna in general but my husband and I have this joke about certain foods that should and should not be ordered when you're spending money. I feel like you can get tuna anytime and it's the last thing I would order when I go out to eat but he is always interested in how certain places make "classic" dishes. He loved it and said he would get it again. The Bonita was great but the steak was a little tough for me. I just loved all of the flavors. It was crazy. I kept seeing different variations of birria ramen but when I saw Cubano Ramen I decided to go with that instead. It was very interesting. It definitely tasted like a Cuban in ramen form. It was a tad too salty for me after a few bites but my husband said it was perfect. Now the piece de la resistance is that Elote pasta salad. I wanted to drive back and get a Home Depot bucket's worth. I'm obsessed with that stuff. My husband almost didn't get any. I could not stop eating it. I chased it with a few sips of a agua fresca and I was in heaven. I don't know what they put in it but I was tempted to top it off with some Tequila. I want to try every single one they offer now. As for dessert, I was too full to enjoy it that day but the next day it was delicious. My husband devoured his and said it was the best tres leches cake he's had. Finally got to try here and get the special of the week which was a steak and cheese sub with peppers and onions. The price seemed higher than you would think for the size but once you ate it, you could see why. It was LOADED with steak and cheese. No skimping here. They are consistently good. Went in for their weekly special, which this week was the Vega, a Spanish sausage on ciabetta with brava sauce and garlic aoili, melted on top with some manchego cheese and peppers. They put so much flavor into their food with each bite! Of course I couldn't just get one thing. Street corn Mac and cheese!!!! This dish blew me away. If you follow me you know I'm a Mac and cheese snob. I absolutely love love this street corn Mac and cheese. It was cheesy, it was a flavor bomb. The chipotle mayo, cheese sauce, queso and tajin spices, when I read that I was like Mayo really? Well YES mayo please! The spice level was perfect for me, but if you have a sensitivity to heat proceed with caution. But I have to say it again, amazing dish! My son went with the birria tacos, and he loved them. Oh my gosh this was so good!! I read a step out buffalo article about this place, and in the same week got two more recommendations so we had to try it! We got takeout last night for dinner and the raving was on point!! We both prefer bowls and the cool thing is you can get any sandwich as a bowl, changing bread for either saffron rice, power grains, lettuce or potatoes! I opted for the Gustavo over rice and my husband got the Phoenix over power grains. Mine was incredible!! Perfect rice, the Jalapeño ranch was so good, the guacamole delicious, and that chicken with Chipotle butter, drool! The chicken stayed soooo crisp even traveling home! We also got Pelotas and street corn mac and cheese on the side. The Pelotas were perfectly crisp and those sauces with them were great. The mac and cheese was another drool worthy dish!! Spicy and cheesy and good!! I got chips as free side and I was too full to eat them but my husband liked them. I also ordered a cookie stuffed with Mexican chocolate ganache but again, too full!! Definitely would order again and also the price was super reasonable for the amount we got!! read more

I am so excited about them reopening! I'm gluten intolerance, so finding a sandwich shop that works for me is far from easy. But their menu is amazing, exotic, and completely delicious! Amazing new sandwhich shop in the Kenmore area. They also have a shop in Sanborn. The sandwhiches were good. They had so much flavor. The bread was fresh. I tried the Oso, a beef birra sandwich. It had lots of meat on it, and packed tons of flavor. Little tip they have a Brava sauce, I suggest getting some and adding it to the sandwhich. Thank me later. Tasted two of there other sandwiches which also were delicious. A second Tortuga, a second five star review. I can't get enough of this place and having a location closer to home is such a treat. They have carried over the menu from the Sanborn location plus some new items, such as the calabacita rice which was previously just a special. Food is as delicious as ever and you truly can't go wrong here, everything is fantastic. They're putting out a product that's unlike anything else in the city. I was so glad to see a steady stream of customers coming in because I really want this business to thrive and stick around. If you're coming for dinner keep an eye on the time because they currently close at 7 and take their final orders around 6:45. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered three different sandwiches, a Chivito (steak), a Morales (chicken), and a Phoenix (turkey). The consensus was they were among the best sandwiches we had ever had. The house chips were also good, similar to BBQ chips. We took the sandwiches to go. There are some tables to sit at but nothing fancy. We are already eyeing the menu to see what to try next time. read more

We frequented the original location in Sanborn and couldn't wait for this location on Kenmore to open. Sadly our visit was disappointing. The woman with glasses and hairpin a ponytail sat at the register reading. We arrived filled with excitement and she immediately put a wet blanket on our enthusiasm. I asked about getting a sandwich switched from bread to chiabatta roll and she said no! She acted offended that I asked! The menu stated you can have your sandwich on a wrap or chiabatta roll... ok then! She was having a bad day..we were not going to let that ruin our lunch. I ordered a different sandwich. She announced food will take 15 minutes...no problem at all for us. We oftentimes waited 30 minutes for food at the Sanborn location. Food was ready about 10 minutes later. Yeah atmosphere is a little bit nicer than the Sanborn location but it's a very basic place. Acid rock was playing throughout our visit. I personally didn't mind this, but as I looked around and realized we were the only people eating there. I wondered if other people perhaps ordered and took their food to go. It didn't make for a comfortable experience. My husband ordered the turkey sandwich which was delicious and I ordered a chicken sandwich. My chicken sandwich was just OK. Sides were wonderful a pasta salad with corn, the homemade chips and the corn fritters were amazing. I'm only giving three stars because the woman at the counter was just so unfriendly . She read her book the entire time we were there. They cleaned up our table got up to leave she did not acknowledge us. We said goodbye. She never looked up from her book. Can I say I regret leaving her a tip? I think it will be a great place for takeout, but I would not go back in order food to sit in the restaurant. Just bad vibes from that woman. read more
