Had to get ice cream on a hot night so tried a local place. They have lots of flavors to choose from so had the Coffee Chocolate Chip. It was good, kind of on the small side. I ordered a small. I asked for Jimmys and I got rainbow sprinkles. In Boston, Jimmys are known as the chocolate sprinkles. I guess here they don't know that. I was disappointed. But I still enjoyed my ice cream. I've heard folks raving about this place for years, so finally decided to swing by and try it out. First off, must say I'm a bit of a skeptic regarding specialty ice cream shops: with one exception (a now-defunct "frozen custard" shop in Friendswood, Texas of all places, where you could see the super-dense/rich stuff glacially oozing out of the machine, and one milkshake's worth of it kept me full for the rest of the day!) I have yet to find any that are significantly better than ordinary Haagen Daz from a supermarket. In fact, most ice cream parlour ice creams aren't even as good, while costing orders of magnitude more than supermarket H-D! Toscanini's is close to equal to H-D in my book...and mainly for the fact that they offer some truly unusual and original flavors: we had the Mango Sticky Rice, Burnt Caramel, and Kulfi. My friend who enjoyed the first one the most, quickly tired of the second, and the third was my favorite by far, mainly because I love cardamom and saffron so much. I was somewhat conflicted with the Burnt Caramel...first taste was delightful, but halfway through the novelty faded away for the most part. We both appreciated that the ice cream was not hyper-sweet like JP Licks, though. HOWEVER, the extreme creaminess, density, and dry mouth-feel of H-D was just not there, as usual. I'd describe the texture of Toscanini's ice cream to be fairly ordinary, like a typical soft/smooth gelato texture. Not bad, but not anything I would really write home about. YMMV of course. Otherwise, service was good and the place is clean and pleasantly modern inside, with 3 nice new steel benches to sit at outside. The benches are curiously turned AWAY from the street, I suppose to foster more of a "communal" vibe and people-watching opportunities. I've walked by during peak hours and seen it quite full, so this place clearly is still quite popular. At $8.25 for 3 scoops (albeit fairly generous sized scoops) of oh, 8 out of 10 ice cream, I don't see myself ever becoming a regular here despite the undeniably interesting/unique flavors, unless I came mainly for the people-watching opps on a nice weather day. read more

Really good ice cream spot in Cambridge. They offer a variety of flavors-both classic and original. You can sample flavors as well. I got a small with one scoop of cookie dough and one scoop of nocciola (hazelnut). Both were creamy and very flavorful. Sprinkles are free as well so I was excited. They have plenty of seating and free newspapers to read so it was fun. Service was fast and they were friendly too. Definetely check this place out!! read more

What a delightful scoop of flavor. What an amazing selection to choose from! I was there on an unseasonably hot day, and let me tell you, so was everybody else... but the folks behind the counter worked with consideration and as efficiently as possible, and it wasn't too long of a wait to get a scoop of chocolate to enjoy outside. It's a shame I don't live close by and can regularly return. I've heard their seasonal flavors are incredible, and I'm even envious of those who are able to sample the whole collection as stands. Came to Toscanini's on one of the hottest day's of the summer - ultimately satisfied and wished I had another day to try more flavors. Toscanini's has 2 locations, each with different rotating flavors. This one on First Street advertised a Spicy BBQ flavor, and I just had to go try it. The inside is very spacious with light wood walls and concrete flooring - very industrial/home-improvement-big-box-warehouse vibes. At the counter were several teens/young 20-somethings chatting amongst themselves. We were helped shortly after perusing the huge list of flavors. Whoever helped us allowed us to try a bunch of flavors. We tried: - Spicy BBQ - SUPER spicy, be forewarned. Definitely an interesting flavor, but personally could not handle an entire scoop of it. - Tahini - strong sesame flavor, but also a little plain We ended up ordering: - B3 - browned butter, caramely notes. This is their signature flavor. - Orange dark chocolate - although I didn't detect any orange, this was still a yummy chocolate flavor - French vanilla - basic for the SO's plain taste buds - Salty caramel - SO's go-to is caramel so this was a no-brainer for him Checking the website's flavor menu now, I really wished I was there to try their Miso Peanut Butter! So good! We got the milo, malt cookies and cream, and I forgot the name of it but it was like a vanilla base with grape nuts. The shop had a few tables and had a modern look. The people at the counter were really nice and answered all our questions. You were allowed to taste test. The malt cookies and cream was my favorite! We came on the Monday of a long weekend; Kendall Square was a ghost town. Even so, Toscanini's had some busy foot traffic. I went with the grapenut raisin and cookies and cream. The grapenut had some intense cereal taste, possibly the best rendition of this flavor I've had. Same with the strawberry that my husband got. It was such a concentrated hit of strawberry with a nice pale pinkish color. Three samples per customer. A bench outside and some seating inside, including a massive table facing their kitchen, where you get to watch someone assemble their ice cream cakes. Their flavor menu has so many creative options, including goat cheese brownie, burnt honey gojuchang, kulfi. I liked the first bite but it was pretty bitter after first bite lol they have small seating areas but it's uncomfortable high chair setting. Toscanini's came as a high recommendation to me, so I went out of my to stop by in Cambridge to try it. They definitely offer a nice variety of flavors, so I wanted to sample different ones. The staff seemed a bit irritated that I asked for multiple samples, even though there was no line. One of the flavors I tried was B3, and once I did I knew I had to get a double scoop of that. B3 has HUGE chunks of soft brownie inside, and the brown sugar flavor throughout the ice cream is excellent and very rich. Very deep in flavor, I highly recommend B3! read more

Mediocre ice cream and service. Came here on a Saturday night and there was some street parking. When though there were only like 4 people in front of me, the workers were somewhat slow and inefficient and it took about 10 minutes. There are tables inside but I wasn't sure if I parked in a handicapped parking spot on the street so I thought it would be best to get back to my car and eat the ice cream in my car. I got a large which is up to three flavors but I didn't think it was very large as the serving size was fairly small. For a few dollars more I could've gotten twice as much in a pint. I got the burnt caramel, green tea, and rice crispy treat flavors. The burnt caramel is interesting but the bitter burnt taste was a bit much and definitely got old after a few bites - if they could tone down the burnt taste a little bit, this would be much better. The green tea tasted fine but unimpressive, to be honest I think that Haagen Dazs matcha green tea ice cream from the grocery store blows this one out of the water. The rice crispy treat flavor was very unique and good. I typically like smooth ice cream without any toppings inside but the soggy crispy rice went very well with the buttery marshmallow flavored creamy ice cream. Maybe I should've tried some of the more Indian flavors like the mango sorbet as there were lots of Indians inside that seemed to be enjoying themselves and many of the flavors seemed to have an Indian background. I visited Toscanini's for the first time on Saturday afternoon around 3 pm. There was thankfully no line and the staff was ready to help us with our orders. They allow for samples and I was able to try the Banana Fluff (just tasted like frozen bananas) before settling on a small cup of both Burnt Caramel and Orange Creamsicle. The Burnt Caramel was the stronger of the two flavors, almost tasting a bit like coffee. The Orange Creamsicle had a brightness that you don't usually get in an ice cream. There was plenty of open seating both inside and outside the store. There is also two single stall bathrooms available in the hallway behind the cashier. It was a nice touch that they had water cups available next to a water dispenser on one of the counters. Overall, I had a wonderful experience and hope to visit again soon. However, my experience this time was disappointing and not typical based on my part experiences. I door dashed two pints of B3, the most delicious flavor with huge chunks of brownie throughout. This time, one pint had only one piece of brownie and the other had three. This is a far cry from my experiences in the past where it was impossible to take a spoonful without a piece of brownie in it.
