One of the things I love about Mizu Matcha is that you can choose your matcha intensity from levels 1-5. My colleague got some Level 5 matcha last week and told me how good it was, and I thought, "Level 5 is for hardcore matcha people. Well, I'm hardcore!" and so I ordered Level 5 matcha gelato along with the hojicha gelato. Urrr, well...turns out I am not hardcore. I actually had a hard time finishing the Level 5, not because it was bad (actually the flavor and texture is wonderful!), but because it was so intensely matcha. I may, in fact, be happiest somewhere around Level 3. Fortunately, the hojicha was a great pairing; it was delicious and comparatively sweeter, which helped cut some of the intensity of the matcha. The space itself is bright, clean, neat, and minimalist, with a pretty space-efficient setup. It's not huge, but my friend and I were still able to sit there comfortably and enjoy our desserts, and it felt like a pleasant place to linger for a bit. That said, I don't think I've ever had matcha ice cream this intense or this good before. And the COLOR. I have never seen matcha that dark, grassy green. Wow. You look at it and immediately know they are not messing around. My advice: take advantage of the matcha samples at the register and actually try your level before committing to a whole scoop. Do not simply decide you are "hardcore" and discover the truth about yourself afterward. Next time I'm trying the black sesame, and I'm also looking forward to trying the soft serve. The five levels of matcha are interesting - tried the 5% and it was way too bitter - but the prices are insane. Two ice creams, one baby scoop and two baby scoops, were around $16. I think it's overall fine to try once if you're really in the mood for matcha ice cream while doing some retail therapy on Newbury but, at least for me, it's way too expensive for a regular treat. The ice cream itself was also meh - they brand it as gelato but the texture is icy and hard, not the smoothness or creaminess of typical gelato at all. Might as well just call it ice cream. The soft serve looked good. My main grievance is how crazy hot and airless it gets inside the store in the summer. I really feel for the employees because that level of heat can't be safe, though maybe they get a reprieve from the ice cream chest. We came on a day when it was over 90 and even standing around/waiting for our number to be called was borderline unbearable. With the heat and the volume of people coming in and out/shouting orders, it doesn't make for a very enjoyable eating experience. read more

Lots of layers, toasted sesame mochi. It was enjoyable. My matcha strawberry frappe, now don't get me wrong maybe it's the style of frappe they do but i was expecting more creamy foamy style drink. Brand new matcha spot on Newbury Street! I came here with my girlfriend over the weekend to try it out and it was very busy. There was a line going outside and inside was super packed. It took us a while to get inside but once we did, we used the tablet to put our order in. Some people were ordering at the counter so that helped get people in and out. It took about 5 minutes to get our orders since there were several people in front of us. I got a matcha latte with strawberry and it tasted great! Though I wish it was mixed better but I guess that's something I could have done once I got the drink. I'll definitely come back to try their blended drinks and their ice cream. My only problem with this place is how busy it was. Of course that comes with being so new but I feel like they could have removed the seating area to make this more of an in and out type of place. Mizu Matcha is a must-go for matcha lovers! It's very similar to Matcha Cafe Maiko BUT they offer different strength levels of matcha for their ice creams. They have 5 strengths, with level 1 being the sweetest & level 5 being the strongest + most bitter. I believe the strengths only apply for their matcha gelato. I ordered ahead of time, through ChowBus for pickup & it was ready by the time we arrived! The strawberry matcha frappe was more-so just a slushy. We were expecting it to be more creamy, rather than ice w/ a hint of matcha with strawberry jam. I know the drink looks too green to just have a "hint of matcha" but that's really all it tasted like. So, this was just all right. Likely won't get this one again but will try their iced latte version next time. Now, the Matcha Warobi Mochi Parfait is what I personally got & I loved it! Finally got around to trying out this spot. Inside, it's pretty small and not really ideal spend time in there. We ordered from the kiosk and didn't realize we could sample the levels before ordering. I got a 3 scoop gelato and a parfait and the total was pretty pricey for just 2 items. The matcha levels really did surprise me. The level 5 was super strong and bitter. Very grassy tasting. And even the level 3 was also really matcha forward as a warning to those who aren't used to matcha bitterness. Parfait was good and generous with the matcha soft serve. I didn't necessarily have high expectations for this place, but I was really let down. Walking into the matcha spot, it's very bright and clean. There's a kiosk that you can order at but because it's my first time, I wanted to try their gelato before buying. For one scoop and a cone, it was nearly $10. The gelato scoop was also tiny and couldn't even be seen under the cone (see photo). They didn't notify me that a cone was also an additional charge. Visited Mizu for the first time and it's a cute small casual cafe specializing in matcha. I tris the 3 scoop gelato option. They offer a range of matcha from level 1-5 going from sweet to more bitter. They also have a few non-matcha flavors. I tried the hojicha, taro and matcha level 5 (more bitter). The consistency was a bit hard and not as velvety as gelato can be. The taro and hojicha were also fairly sweet, I much preferred the level 5 as it was minimally sweet.
