Inattentive wait staff, cold food, and dirty plates would be the best way to describe our most recent experience at Toscanova. Our waiter was so preoccupied cleaning tables that weren't his, talking to the bartender every now and then, and hiding in the kitchen that we barely saw him our entire meal. We had to ask bussers and other waiters to hope to place an order, and we watched multiple leave the restaurant because they also were not being waited to. It was definitely not a matter of being busy either, the restaurant was almost empty and it was still almost impossible to receiver service. When I received a visibly dirty plate, I watched the waiter stare directly at the dirt left on the plate and continue to give it to me. This specific waiter also kept wagging a finger at us to tell us to wait when we needed something simple like wanting to order our entrees or open a wine bottle, and would then proceed to talk to the bartender at the bar or stare from behind a counter. The few times when our waiter would come to us he would give us soundbytes to respond to which we thought was friendly conversation, but he would never respond back to us which felt incredibly condescending. This waiter felt the need to tell us that he wasn't ignoring us at the end of the meal but it was very clear he was when we watched him stare at us from behind a counter doing absolutely nothing. Our food came out lukewarm and it definitely didn't seem like it was because of the kitchen. When we asked to exchange our food we explained why and he blatantly didn't listen and asked us right after "what's the reason for returning your food?" I would have been more understanding if our waiter was more open with us about maybe having a long day or something, but the waiter was completely cold and mechanical. The only redeeming part about our meal and the reason I'll give this place an extra star, was that the manager saw our very visible discontent and offered desserts to compensate us for our experience. Thank you to upper management for at least being able to assess a situation that our waiter was clearly too jaded to see. If you're looking for an Italian restaurant or just a restaurant in general that does better at paying attention, try elsewhere at the Commons. read more

Food was bland and subpar. The service was worse. I ordered the Sea Bass and the potatoes were sliced in very thin rounds, which to covered the dish and under-cooked and tasteless. When I ordered I was expecting it came with actual roasted potatoes as the menu subscribed. The fish didn't taste like fresh sea bass and very bland, slightly undercooked. The tomatoes and olives were essentially a garnish and inedible. We had to wait 30 min just to get someone's attention to take our order. And another 20 min just to get Parmesan. They brought us the wrong drinks and took longer to correct it. When I got desert to go they left off the caramel sauce that's suppose to come with it. Will not be returning. Came across this restaurant during our trip around c Calabasas and had a pleasant experience! The restaurant is located right next to a brunch cafe and a coffee shop. We arrived at around noon and we were seated immediately and greeted by our host and server who were both very kind and welcoming. We ordered the Penne, roasted eggplant, bufala mozzarella dish and Traditional lasagna bolognese which were both very flavorful and high quality. There was also complimentary bread which I can say by far it is the best bread I have eaten in a restaurant. We were frequently checked in on and our waters were refilled consistently. Everything came out in a timely manner. We were seated outside which was a great choice for us, there was a nice view of the plaza and it was the perfect weather to be outside, very calming and chill vibes. read more

Tonight in the beautiful and festive Toscanova. Drinks smooth Dirty martini's extra olives. I enjoyed a delicate light mustard vinegar dressing accompanied with Bosc pears, grapes, candied walnuts wrapped in a variety of greens called a Pera salad. My lady a Burrata e funghi Melanzane or eggplant. Main course out of my world of home made pasta of unbelievable light cream sauce with truffles. My lady had an amazing tagl bolognese pasta. We passed on desert this evening as we anxiously watched the rain fall through the wide windows that looked out to the outside patio. This is a very romantic restaurant tucked away in the Commons. Ernest o helped the evening along when he approached me and asked if I wanted the left overs boxed up. My wife smiled up at me as Ernesto took the food away to be boxed up. I knew she was smiling because we have talked about this subject before. When the pandemic hit all of us boxed left overs ourselves to play it safe. Now fingers crossed she prefers the safety of protecting pasta sauce from soiling her clothing. Leaving the night rain was more like a mist and bore a light romantic touch to the wonderful evening of festive decorations, excellent attentive service of the humorous friendly server Devon. I love a good Italian restaurant with house made noodles but this was definitely not it. Celebrated my mom's birthday here as a last minute option because she changed her mind from Sugarfish. We know of a better one in the area but since this one was right next door, we decided to just try it. I should've trusted my gut and all the reviews from my fellow elites but gave it a chance anyway. The place was basically empty, on a Sunday lunch hour where all other spots around were PACKED.. the hostess seated us in the back and a young man got us some water and bread. Our main waiter came by after and said hello and gave us more time to look over the menu. I'm a white sauce gal so that was already a problem for me. The only white sauce pasta they have is fettuccine Alfredo which wasn't on their lunch menu so I had to ask for their full menu to actually find it. Food came out quick, I didn't even touch the bread they brought out because gnats were all over it and even went into my glass of water. Very annoying but I guess unavoidable? I took my mom's water since she had a lemonade anyway but the water was room temp, no ice, not cold at all. My mom and bf enjoyed their branzino which made me think maybe I should've ordered that instead of the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. You can tell the pasta was house made, but it was dry and felt a little too undercooked. The chicken was okay but overall my meal was bland and had zero flavor. I wish it had more sauce. I tried to add salt and that didn't help. I like drizzling a bit of balsamic to my pasta in general but that also did not help. So we were wary due to the low ratings but I don't know who has been rating this place so badly, cuz they're wrong. The drinks were on POINT. We sat outside and the weather was perfection, the service was warm, friendly and wonderful. The scallops special was delicious and the broth in the Mussels aka the Impepata Di Cozze was perfection (to be clear, mussel broth is a fine balance and I try it at every restaurant that serves it, it often falls short and misses the mark, this one was excellent) and that is very hard to accomplish. They have bold flavors and creative renditions with their menu. We came down from Santa Barbara for a date night and because of Tocanova we will be back again! read more

Food is always very good here! The atmosphere and ambience is very nice. The outdoor seating is nice as well, beautiful setting. The pasta dishes are amazing. Lamb chops are delicious. Bar drinks are good. The service though has been bad during each of the last three visits. Management really needs to tune up communication with the wait staff, bus staff, the kitchen line and food runners. It's just not acceptable especially at these prices. Fifteen minutes before we were even greeted after getting seated. Asked for butter for the bread over and over and it never came. Never received the extra lemons for all of the ice teas. One of the pasta dishes was wrong and not what we ordered. The desert never came but we were charged for it, which they later removed from the bill. At one point everyone was so frustrated and we didn't even want to stay but we did so because of our Mom. It's a shame that the overall service and organization and communication here has gone downhill in the last few months. Having early reservations, dealing with the rain then arriving at this beautiful restaurant we knew we were in good hands! Confirmed our reservations then promptly seated for party of 3. Our Server Jonathan Maya quickly welcomed us and took our drink order. He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and answer any questions we might have. We found him to be very knowledgeable about the dinners we ordered and very professional in taking the time necessary to answer our questions. Now that orders have been placed and time to talk among ourselves and enjoy the ambiance of the interior dining room which was stunning! Dinner has arrived with great anticipation and presentation which did not disappoint. Drinks refilled without asking and thefood was excellent. Strange experience that ended much better. So when we walked in we had reservations for an entire birthday. But the front seemed so confused as to where our table was how many people would be with us etc. Eventually they figured it out after about 10-15 minutes ( Already a long time ) pretty annoying. Usually you get a bolognese with to much or to little meat. This was just right. More on the sweeter side then bitter/acidic side. Had a good proper taste. So why the 3 stars? Well simple. Service from the start wasn't acceptable in a place like this. Front staff needs to have better communication. The food took about 40 minutes to come out. Seems a bit to long. And well... the food is just ok. I wouldn't come back here for the bolognese that's for sure. It's just pretty regular but not bad either. We love coming in to the Commons as often as we can. It's a lovely place to spend a day or an evening. We never have trouble reserving at Toscanova. This place has everything for everyone. My children love it so that said, I love it too. They have a great wine menu and husband and I take advantage:) then we spent our day walking around and chit chatting. The lasagna is delicious, the bolognese pasta is a favorite, the salad are great. We usually stick to Italian course. Oh, and the pizza is great. It's a very peaceful restaurant for sure. I never got his name but he's a taller brunette guy- he's the best and makes amazing drinks! Great spot.. maybe one day we'll try the food but the drinks are enough to keep us coming back. The Manhattan is delish, lychee Martini is chefs kiss and of course you can't go wrong with a St Germain spritz. Cute little restaurant in the calabasas commons , they're always poppin.
