My go to is Thai Hokkien(or flat noodles ) with chicken but when I'm feeling indulgent I'll go for combination where they add all the meats and even some shrimp. This is one of my favorite places ever when I'm craving chow mein-type noodles. As the name suggests, you get to choose your type of noodle (hokkien, flat rice, thin rice, spinach, glass) or rice (fried, steamed, etc.), sauce (Chinese soy, Thai peanut, Malay spicy, Japanese sweet/ketchup), and protein (tofu, chicken, pork, beef, prawn, combo). I believe there are also curry and noodle soup options, but I've only had the stir-fried noodles. They take your order at the counter, give you a number, and then stir-fry everything up for you in The Wok (that's what I named their kitchen vessels). They bring your dish out, whether it's takeout or not, to your number where you are seated. I get the same thing every time so this may not be the most representative review, but it's THAT good. I don't even try to branch out to try other sauces or noodle options, I just stick to my classic: hokkien noodles with Chinese soy sauce and chicken (prawn is a few bucks extra and I'm cheap). Sometimes I think "maybe I should try the spicy sauce because it sounds good..." but I'm too afraid to stray away from my all-time favorite to be adventurous :( And da cravings are strong. Story of my life. The service is quick, albeit not particularly warm or friendly. But I almost always order takeout from here so that's not a huge issue. The noodles are always chewy, the dishes perfectly seasoned, and the veggies nice and crispy, not overcooked! I was in the area and wanted to grab a simple lunch. After browsing through some of the reviews, I decided on the Hokkein noodles with thai sauce and tofu. Your order comes out pretty quick and it's a good size portion. Noodles had a nice bite to it, and the sauce was good. I wish the tofu was cut up more (it was just like huge slabs in the bowl). Quality food, quality service, and quality design - this place is as good as it gets! They just opened a week ago, and they're off to a strong start. Let's begin with the decor and design - very modern and easy on the eyes, the kind of comfortable place where you can sit and chat with friends, maybe watch some TV on the flatscreen. I'm no design expert, but I personally liked the design theme they've got going on with the menu and especially the Toss logo - it's simple and easy to understand with a cursory glance. Moving on to the service! Jan is so sweet and helpful. When it comes to trying out my first dish at a new restaurant, I tend to go into a state of extreme indecision and anxiety. So the choose-your-own dish approach turned my indecisive and overeager brain into overdrive. Thankfully, Jan made it easy and recommended me the delicious combination of Thai spicy sauce with Hokkien noodles and chicken. Which was damn good. The Hokkien noodles have this great slightly chewier texture that reminds me of homemade noodles. The Thai spicy sauce was mostly sweet with a small spicy kick mild enough for this spice-averse stomach to enjoy. Chicken and vegetables were cooked to perfection as well. 1.5 at best. Maybe it is just what I ordered. Wasn't impressed, parts were inedible. Felt like poor materials mixed in a bowl. Easily not worth the price based on the meal. Don't get me wrong, I like hodge podge places if it can be done right. But a jack of all trades usually is a master of none. This had failed on multiple points unfortunately for me. I had ordered spinach noodles, malay sauce, tofu, and extra vegetables added. 13 dollars in total. The malay sauce was light, didn't hold with everything else. It sat down on the bottom of the bowl and mixing things didn't help because it was too light in general to stay on the ingredients. Eventually when I got down close to the bottom of the bowl, the noodles tasted okay but most of this was just noodles anyway. The balance was terrible. The veggies that are supposed to be there in addition to the extra I paid for amounted to very little overall. The tofu wasn't cooked along with everything else either. It was lightly seared, and then cut up into large strips and thrown into the bowl so it had none of the flavor of the sauce and was slightly cold. Also, however the tofu was stored prior to cooking it just tasted sour so the tofu may have been bad and it wasn't even cooked adequately enough to make it taste like anything else to cover that up. Thankfully this isn't meat, bad tofu is at least somewhat stomachable but that isn't really a consolation. Perhaps the meat dishes are better here, but really if you can't cook tofu right I doubt I'd come back to try anything else unfortunately. The food came out very quick... But it was cold. I was eating it for about 10 minutes when I noticed a (medium to long) black hair. The food was a strange lukewarm temperature so I decided to stop eating it and save it for later (I pulled the hair out). I got diarrhea shortly after eating, maybe 2 hours later, in the middle of my art history class. I didn't really think anything about it. ... My disappointment came when I took a bite of the noodle and felt that it had a chewy consistency reminding me of staleness. The lack of adequate amount of meat was also a problem for me. This is a great appetizer for a group of 3 because it comes with 3 samosas! It was super delicious and filling. I also ordered the thai iced tea and it was ok. Yay! I'm a fan. Came all the way to Berkeley to hang out with a friend; originally, we planned to try one of the popular ramen places, but this one looked more appealing. Apparently this place had opened not too long ago and offered customizable noodle dishes. I'm all for the personalization because I know what I want, but it'd be nice to have a set menu just to get a feel for the "specials" that any restaurant has to offer. I ordered the combo hokkien noodles in malay (peanut) sauce. I personally love this combination, and the chefs definitely did it justice! I'm not sure what defines the "combo" but I assume that it's a mixture of all the meats they have on the menu. In fact, all the meats were cooked just right, nothing was too chewy and nothing was too overpowering. They even threw in a plethora of veges; I thought everything was good, but the onions were a little too raw for my liking. The restaurant itself is very simple, but with a modern touch. You can browse through the pictures, but I can tell you that you can expect a simple and cozy meal if you decide to go here. The staff is also super friendly; one of them was walking around the store refilling half empty glasses even though the water was self-serve. Overall, I really like the concept and execution, I'm not sure what kind of style they are intending to serve, but I wish there were more choices in terms of "soup" noodles. The concept is simple: you pick a base, whether that is a broth or type of noodle, then you pick a protein such as chicken, beef, or shrimp, or you can simply stick with veggies, and then you pick a sauce. They mix everything together and voila, you have your very own customized noodle dish. I ordered a noodle base with shrimp as my protein and the Chinese sauce, and the dish looked, well, simply ordinary. It was just as I predicted it would look -- like something I could have made myself. The dish was tasty but had no originality or anything special to it, and I was not impressed. Toss is not a bad place to eat at by any means, but it's not going to wow you with their customized dishes. I like that there are big pitchers of water for customers though so we can keep one at the table. I can't stand not having enough beverage with my meal! The secret's out. Toss has been "discovered" by downtown Berkeley. Or more accurately, by Berkeley High School students. The place has been MOBBED the last two times I've been here. Hard to believe I used to come here for a quiet lunch and be one of the only tables seated. Despite this, a year and a half after their opening, they still give fabulous service (with a smile!) despite the vast numbers of people they are serving. They swiftly buss tables, bring out your food (you pay at the counter and get a number) and even refill water glasses. The food is delicious and portions are very satisfying. I usually get the Hokkien noodles with green curry and chicken. I've tried other combos (the possibilities are almost endless!) and all have been yummy. Toss has great portions and fresh noodles. I love the udon stir fry with beef. It's kinda like Chipotle for stir fry, you chose your noodle, sauce, and toppings. The peanut sauce is really good, I wish it had spice but they have little spicy sauce caddies that can help. Sometimes everyone takes those to the tables so I can't get my spicyness. Combo Japanese flat rice is one of my absolute favorites here. It's sweet and tangy, but not too saucy. It's just the right amount and the flat rice tastes great! The best part is that it definitely fits anyone's budget. One order can feed 2 people and a combination of any order you choose is $10.95. I have yet to try the appetizers. Think of an Asian-style Chipotle- you pick your type of noodle, sauce, protein, and cooking style (stir-fry or soup). It is a pretty big portion for $8! I recommend the SPINACH NOODLES. They are chewy and not overwhelmingly spinach tasting. The greenness of the noodles also make them more fun to eat :) Pairs well with the peanut sauce. For those more carb-conscious, they do have salad options, but you can also request no noodles and extra veggies instead. I went for the latter option, and got a huge bowl of veggies with chicken in a clear broth. The broth was delicious and not overly salty. When I entered, Hotline Bling was playing on the speakers, so I knew I was going to have a good time. Ended up getting their red curry tofu with steamed rice. It was a decent meal-- filling, and somewhat flavorful. They weren't skimpy on the vegetables or tofu, which I appreciated. I would have given Toss Noodle a 4 star rating, but after my meal, I felt intense cramps in my stomach. I don't usually experience any type of stomach pain after eating, so I assumed the dish I was served was the culprit. It was absolutely delicious. I'm officially obsessed with red curry with noodles - I used to think it was just good with rice, but it is SUBLIME with noodles. It was subtly spicy, so I just loaded in more hot chili sauce. So yummy...I thought that the portioning was nice too - they had the noodles outside of the soup base, so they wouldn't get all soaked and gross before you finish the whole dish. I also tried my friends Hokkien noodles with the thai sauce. I must say, that dish tasted a pretty mediocre. Chipotle model for Asian-style noodles! I love places like this where I can totally customize my meal. What's great about Toss is that they have a lot of different options for everything. So if you're craving noodle soup but your friend wants some stir fry, then you can do that! I tried the flat rice noodles with chicken, laksa soup style. The noodles were great, the chicken pieces plentiful. I didn't love the laksa soup though. It kinda reminded me more of Thai curry and I wish it was a bit spicier. I do like that they include vegetables in the noodles and it was a decently big portion for me to the point that I was rather full at the end. Since soo many people in the reviews mentioned the Thai tea, of course I had to get it. It was a good call, GET THE THAI TEA! So delicious, not overly sweet but still had a tea flavor.
