Stopped by Tostado in JP for a quick sandwich and it did exactly what it needed to do. We ordered the Cuban and the Completo -- both solid options. I personally liked the Completo more because of all the meat, while the Cuban leaned fresher with more vegetables. The food came out quick and the shop itself is really more for pick up with a stand up counter to eat. Nothing here is trying to reinvent the wheel, but it's a satisfying, no-frills meal, and for under $13 a sandwich, the value is hard to beat. I've been a couple times now. I really like this place. The feel, the food, service have been great. Hell, even just chatting with a fellow customer every now and then is cool. I'm particularly fond of the Tostado Club and the Havana Cubano. Nice balance and filling. I wish they had space to sit, but I'm happy to walk and eat when it's this. Pretty sure, after a sandwich and drink and tip, I'm usually around $20. read more

As someone who gets a piña colada smoothie ANYTIME there's one on a menu, I'm going to be honest and say this was one of the best smoothies I've ever had. I had no expectation of anything crazy good upon walking in, looked like a normal sandwich and smoothie place, but omg. I might even compare all piña colada smoothies to this one after trying it. I also got the Tostado Club, which was delicious and drenched in sauce. Fries were the only thing that could use some improvement, maybe slightly crunchier or with some seasoning, but everything else was perfect. Will definitely return next time i'm in JP or near the Arboretum. So so good and cheap! Came in to try a smoothie on a Saturday afternoon. Got sucked in to try a yummy looking sandwich as well. The order took around 15 minutes to make. There are about 6 chairs around a bar to eat at, so this is not a good place for groups. There is good Latin music playing to enjoy while you wait. When the food came out, the presentation was not looking good. I got a cheese melt and a mango smoothie. In my opinion, the cheese was not appetizing at all. On top of that, it wasn't fully melted. It was also covered in ketchup and mayo (which is on all of the sandwhiches, but it was just too much for me). I'm not that picky, but I really couldn't finish it. Sandwiches are ok when they get your order correct, and when they say 15min add 10min to that ETA. Just make sure to check your order before yiu leave the store. Once ok honest mistake maybe even the second but three time in a month. C'mon now. Just get frustrating. read more

Went to this place after a long day at the Arnold Arboretum, and it was simply amazing. I got the Real Dominican sandwich and the Special sandwich and was not let down. First off, VERY SLOW. Called about 20 minutes ahead for pick up. I walked in and had to wait about 30 more minutes for my food, which I didn't understand since, again, it was VERY slow. I ordered the yaroa plate. Now, as a Dominican, that has eaten yaroas IN THE Dominican, I know what a yaroa of poor quality looks and tastes like. These people barely put any meat or effort in making them! I literally paid almost $30 for two shakes and two yaroas that were literally a plate full of fries with melted cheese on top and barely any meat! Such a disappointment, especially for the price! I could've gone to Stop and Shop across the street, bought the same ingredients and could've made the same exact plate, with more meat, cheese and flavor for less than $10! My husband and I love this place and wish we discovered it sooner! They have an insane selection of juices and smoothies, many with fruits I'd never tried, or that are impossible to find in other smoothie places or in supermarkets. I recommend guanabana, zapote, or for breakfast avena con naranja. The sandwiches are awesome too- similar to the traditional Cuban sandwich, but often the meat is shredded and mixed with mayo. I've tried the Tradicional and two other sandwiches- one chicken and one pork, and loved them all. Recently I chatted at length with a Dominican co-worker about this place and he had various recommendations on things to try and stories about his favorite things they eat in the D.R. I think that in typical Jamaica Plain "Latin Quarter" fashion, Tostado must be great for Latinos craving delights from back home, and this is also a place where non-Latinos can go to discover some amazing treats they possibly never knew existed! read more

I live a block away from the Jamaica Plain location and called in an order for pickup (one sandwich, three smoothies). Thing is, I made the mistake of calling the Roslindale location. I went to pick up my food and that's when we realized I goofed. The owner, Tony, happened to be in the store and offered to drive to Roslindale and pick up my food and then deliver it to my apartment. When he got here he was apologized and said he is going to talk to the staff and make sure they are stating which location they are in. I mean, it was my fault, but he didn't see it that way.. Sandwiches so good, I can't bring myself to visit Subway ever again. The four stars is for the fact that it truly takes forever and a day in order to get your food. The guy in the back takes his sweet time, I swear. But, it's worth it in the end, I promise! I've had their 3 Cheese (Dominican cheese, Swiss, and Cheddar) and their Dominicano so far and have yet to be disappointed. As for the smoothies, you can get them as actual smoothies or just the juice. FYI: The cashier is unable to speak English but she does understand a bit of it. Feel free to try out your horrible Spanish on her. She's a very sweet girl, so do not get snippy with her because honestly that would be rude.
