My daughter had an accident at recess during school and came home with a red painful eye. Our regular eye doc was on vacation and I almost brushed off a visit to an eye doc but it starting becoming painful for her. Did a quick Yelp search on the closest eye doc and made a phone call right away and they were able to get me in same day! We saw Dr Kim Admire. She was just wonderful!! Amazing with kids so kind and patient. She said she had a big laceration on her cornea and administered some drops right away to numb the pain. She spent her time examining her eye with all the fancy equipment and even took photos of the back of her so make sure it wasn't deep. This happened on a Friday and she didn't want the entire weekend to go by without her being seen so she came in on her day off a Saturday just to see her. I couldn't believe her level of care and concern for a first time patient. We just got back from our 3rd visit and she said my daughters eye is all healed! I signed up, scheduled the appointment for a week out, entered the supplemental information for faster processing and they never reached out to confirm the appointment or advise of the status. One day before the requested appointment we tried to call and confirm. We barely got through to reception since the phones were busy. Once through the receptionist acted like we should have known if we didn't receive a confirmation we didn't have an appointment. I have way too much FSA money I need to use before the end of the year. They will not receive my money. Not that they care, still haven't receive a status update. read more

Dr. Ambrose is absolutely wonderful, professional and attentive - time with him is like getting re-aquanited with an old friend. HOWEVER, our experience with one of his team members was very concerning. My wife and I recently went to Optique to have our eyes checked and to update prescriptions as needed. The time with Dr. Ambrose was wonderful as always. However, time with the staff member, the blond Asian girl (Ro?) who helped us with new glasses, was concerning. I have been wearing a carbon-fiber-looking Christian Dior frame, black, that my wife said I should change out. My wife and I both like the Silhouette frames and decided to upgrade our glasses to the frameless Silhouettes. I had an existing Silhouette frame with the clip-on sunglasses that I had bought several years ago and asked that they use that to install new lenses. My wife selected a new Silhouette frame and the optional clip-on sunglasses in brown. When we got the message that my glasses were ready, I walked in, headed to the desk, talked to Ro and she handed me my glasses and that was it, . . . . . . and then she looked down at her paperwork. She made no attempt to ask me to try them on, how they fit, if they needed to be adjusted, . . . . . . .nothing. It was if her message to me was, "Well, since you didn't buy the frames here, I don't have time for you." I was up in Encinitas afterwards and stopped in at Encinitas Optical+Sunglass and had him adjust my frames. When my wife got the message that her frames were ready, we went to pick up her new glasses and Ro was so accommodating to make sure the frames fit, however, . . . . . . when my wife noticed Ro had ordered the wrong clip-on sunglasses, (ordering the grey versus what my wife wanted, the brown) first there was the denial response and the, amazingly, Ro said, "Well, I thought you wanted the grey because many people return the brown because they say it makes everything look orange." WHAT? Seriously? That's the best response? I'm still shaking my head at that "creative" response. VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTING. read more

When i went back 2 days later in return them they said the manager would call me because sometimes they accept returns sometimes they don't. We went in at 3pm because the manger never called and the mangers attitude is beyond rude. You do not sell a 350 dollar pair glasses to someone and then not try to make things right. I found this place because it was the closest to my office that took my insurance. I am so glad that I ended up here, my experience has been nothing short of wonderful from the beginning. I easily made an appointment for an eye exam, I had just moved and needed an updated prescription. The doctor was friendly, quick, and very thorough. She was the first one to ask me if I struggled with dry eyes, and then asked if I had my heart set on getting a prescription that day. She recommended some eye drops and we made a follow up appointment for two weeks out to check - I'm only giving you the boring details because I want you to understand how amazing it is that this is the FIRST time anyone has suggested that to me. After following the instructions, now I have the most accurate prescription EVER, and the slight damage from my dry eyes had almost completely repaired. SO. I'm saying this may be a small place, but everyone has been above and beyond diligent and patient to make sure everything was perfect. On the other side of things, I also purchased two new pairs of glasses from them after some poorly made ones I bought online from another shop didn't work out. They have an awesome selection of frames in all styles, and everyone was extremely helpful in assisting me with my search. I rarely write reviews but felt I needed to warn people about this place. The Doctor was very nice and knowledgeable but the support staff are completely incompetent. We took glasses in for lenses in April and just received them. They made every excuse under the sun and took no responsibility. They constantly say they left messages ( and never did) and don't return calls on the occasional time anyone answers the phone. Their pricing is very high and the costing explanations are vague. I have worn glasses since I was ten, and needed them several years before that. I have seen a lot of optometrists over the years, and have unfortunately seen several who kept getting my somewhat complicated prescription wrong. That NEVER happened at Optique Del Mar. The first time I went to this place they gave me more than I bargained for-a virus in my eye. The second time they called me and said I had unused benefits. But Wouldn't give my family of 4 an appointment on the same day because if we canceled they would miss out on business. So they had to inconvenience the customer for their benefit. Really great staff, everyone there is so nice. Especially the optometrist who was super patient with me, I really do highly recommend. The only reason why I am giving one star is because I don't agree with the company policy. After the second attempt at making the glasses, they mentioned the second one was done exactly as I had wished thus it is no longer covered under the original purchase. However I disagreed, I thought this try was still done under their recommendation of the store and I. So I am out of luck, spent the money and have a pair of glasses that gives me headaches. Once again, don't get me wrong, brilliant and helpful staff, very enjoyable on any visits! Just wish the store owner would revise the policy, either try again or refund my money. I've used hem for years,at least10-15.Expensive,but loved my light Swiss Flex.They have a very expensive pair of glasses,that I was suposed to pick up, but was using my spares. Out of there! I've been going there for at least 6 years. I will never go there again. I will find a new optometry shop. Frankly it's not that hard, there's plenty of them around. I see David Geffen, an optometrist in La Jolla (highly recommended), and usually get frames for my family at Optique Del Mar. I'm OUT. I need to get new lenses in my frames. Today I called them and asked if they are open today (i.e., what are their hours). They told me their hours today. Well, I drove to their usual location, which was indicated on their website, near Oggis. Lo and behold, when I got there the place was dark and there were locks on the door. A new address was posted on a piece of paper on their door. So I pulled out of my parking spot, got into my car, and drove to their new location. Google Maps told me that they were located on Village Way in the Pacific Highlands mall. So I drove there and found a parking spot. BTW, there was NO street sign indicating Village Way. SO I called Optique. They told me that they are now located in the upper level of another optometry shop with a different name. Finally I found the place and made my way up the stairs. I told the receptionist that she should have told me that they had moved when I called earlier today. She Should ALSO have told me that they require an appointment. Their website ALSO indicates their OLD address. She proceeded to turn it around as my fault. I walked out. I will go somewhere with better service. This is NOT a good indicator of how they will serve my optometric needs. I'm going on Yelp to check out other optometry shops. So much for those Dior frames that I was going to try on again today at Optique Del Mar. read more

Be aware that you should call before coming by to pick up orders or for any walk in visits. They close their business 1) if the doctor is not in for the day they will likely close at 4pm or 2) close early as soon as the doctor leaves which can be at 4:45pm when their hours state open until 5pm. I just don't know of another business where it's a crapshoot not knowing if they are going to stay open the last hour or not! read more

Amazing! Found my forever optimist. Dr is honest, helpful and extremely nice. I'm fairly new to San Diego and it was tough trying to find a new Dr. Went to another place last year down the street and had the most horrifying experience. From setting the appointment to having my exam, all the way to picking up my new glasses - the staff and experience was great. Setting up the appointment was a breeze. They were able to accommodate me the same week I called. Day of my appointment the staff was nice and the Dr was extremely helpful, patient and NOT pushy at all in adding extras or anything I wasn't comfortable paying for out of pocket other than what insurance covered. As far as picking out my glasses, the staff that helped me was so patient and honest in her opinion. Didn't make me feel rushed and helped me picked glasses that was in range of my insurance coverage. She helped me as well the day I picked up my glasses and made sure it felt and fit to my liking. I really do appreciate an establishment that makes you feel like a forever customer versus a one time customer. Can't wait for next year to come again. Kudos to you guys! read more

Dr. Ambrose and staff were all very friendly and accommodating to my 6 year old son for his first eye exam. I wanted to make sure my son felt comfortable, and he did. We did have to wait a bit longer than expected but the staff was apologetic and handled the situation appropriately, even suggesting some activities to keep them busy, and it worked! I felt like Dr. Ambrose was honest and efficient. My only complaint is the dilation drops stung my sons eyes, and even though he handled it like a champ, if there are non-stinging dilating drops available that would have been preferable. All in all it was a good experience and we will be back in a few months for another exam to see if my boy is ready for his first pair of glasses. read more

I thought the doctor was great, really great. They were a bit more expensive than the usual, though and keep in mind the two different types of exams because I didn't know there were differences and wish I had. If you have EyeMed then you can get either a "standard" or "premium" contact lens exam. Standard means a $40 copay and premium means 10% discount which for me resulted in $113. I wasn't told when I called for the appointment that there was a difference. Perhaps they only offer "premium" but I do feel like they should at least let new patients know this is or isn't an option and what the difference means since they deal with this regularly. But whatever. At the end of the day I feel like I got quality care and the exam includes 10 days of daily contacts as well. read more

this place is incredibly chic. a modern, super hip, well organized, and professional to the core. they stock all the latest glasses and the best brands. it is quiet, the staff is very cool and so helpful that if feels like they anticipate your every need. the business is so great, that it was almost a little intimidating on our first visit. my partner and i felt that we were probably way too dorky and loud and not rich enough to even follow through with my first appointment:)! I had a strange experience at a different optical place where I had my exam and had glasses made that were not good, very blurry. I came here and had glasses made with the same incorrect prescription (didn't know yet that was the problem) and they were also very blurry, so they offered to make the glasses over for me for free. I had a new exam with Dr. Dean and the new glasses are perfect. I have astigmatism and one eye had increased the astigmatism by 100%, I also have presbyopia and use progressive lenses so the whole situation is somewhat complex. She did a great job evaluating my vision and discussing her findings with me to explain why the new prescription was so different and that I may need to adjust to it slowly. I don't feel that I need to adjust, I don't even feel like I'm wearing glasses. I will stick with Optique Del Mar from now on. The staff were all very professional and I love the frames I picked as well. read more

The staff was very attentive, they helped me to schedule an appointment for the day right after I picked the frames I liked. I received my new prescription eyeglasses and I can say they are by far the best prescription eyeglasses I have worn. When I have bought eyeglasses from other places they have missed to prescribe the right specs most of the time so I end up having to adjust to the eyeglasses for a while, not the ones I got this time at Optique Del Mar.
