I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it was just okay. The biggest disappointment was that all of the flavors tasted very similar, none of them really stood out or had a distinct, memorable flavor. I sampled several of my kids' ice creams as well, and they all had the same issue. My kids were not screaming for ice cream. For the price, I expected a lot more. We all scream for ice cream! This is a new spot that just opened up and the line is ridiculous. If you're planning on coming, definitely bring a friend who will help keep your company. I came with a gym friend post our workout to give ourselves a sweet treat. It's really close by the Clarendon Metro and kind of hidden down the alleyway near Liberty Tavern. A friend and I stood in line for approximately 40-45 minutes on a Saturday afternoon around 4PM. Their menu is kind of big so the wait time actually kind of helps with giving you enough time to decide what you actually want. There are two iPad kiosk, where you can build your own or choose of their signature menu, which has a lot of items, somewhere also just fun to read through like one was called the demogorgon. It's a window pick up and has maybe two tables for two people each to sit at. There's also a table where they put extra spoons and napkins for people which I think was a smart choice considering how busy they are. They have a lot of sizes, but to be honest there are many is already bigger than most ice cream regular size. I like the concept of having a core to break up the ice cream and it just has a lot of good flavors that they build into each of their signature items. Since this was a pre-dinner dessert, my friend and I shared a strawberry shortcake mini, which was plenty for me because it's still pretty sweet. I still devoured it and under 10 minutes, but that's because it was just too yummy. The cream cheese frosting, red velvet core, topped with strawberries. This is a newer addition to the Clarendon area and seemingly very popular. I have yet to pass by this place without there being a long line and so I finally decided to check it out because who doesn't love a nice bowl of ice cream on a warm summer day? Despite the length of the line it moved fairly quickly. All the orders were handled outside or at their service window which probably helped with expediting things. They feature an endless array of sundae options with very quirky names like dirt, fluffington post, and granddaddy just to name a few. And as a heads up even the smallest bowl option is a pretty sizely portion. Prices generally range from $10-$15 but it's well worth it. Being a huge fan of apple pie I decided to try out their à la mode flavor which did not disappoint, flavorful with huge chucks of apple pie, caramel drizzle, and whipped cream. Both were delicious (the carrot cake more delicious than the banana cream). While yes, i did enjoy it, but am i in love with it? I'm not quite sure. This location recently opened and of course social media is spreading the word. They are opened from 3:00 pm to 2:00am. I got in line at 2:45 and a long lined quickly formed before opening. They have two kiosk where you can place your order and a table with lids, spoons and paper towels. It would be helpful to know what you want prior to ordering. The kiosk has the Sundaes in alpha order. They have four different sizes. The mini is plenty big for one person. I found that the ice cream melts pretty quickly and makes a bit of a mess if you are not careful. I got the Garland which had krispy treats and s'mores ice cream and the vanilla frosted cupcake. I will say that I liked the Garland a little bit better. Pack your patience and expect to wait depending on what time you get there. This is not for people who like things simple. This is for people like me who like things over-the-top. It's opening weekend so the lines are crazy, we waited over an hour and were there right when it opened. But it did not disappoint, it was amazing. It's not worth the wait. Standing for 45 minutes on a mid-week evening for a $12 SMALL cup serving of Grandaddy (Black raspberry ice cream topped with chocolate chip cookie bites, crushed Oreos, and homemade whipped cream) and another small cup of Basic Becky (French vanilla ice cream with crushed waffle cone, rainbow sprinkles, and homemade whipped cream). The logistics of getting your ice cream are particularly annoying. Up till now, there's always been a long line. Count on waiting about 45 minutes, maybe longer, from the time you get into line until you place your order. Placing your order is also a bit confusing. There are a couple of tablets out front where you can browse through virtually endless combinations, upsells, and add-ins. And you get to do all of this while the people in line behind you are eager for you to "just go away" because they've been waiting possibly longer than you have. It would be nice if you could look at their website and decide ahead of time what to order as your contribution to getting things moving as quickly as possible. The good things were that their French vanilla ice cream tasted of vanilla, and their whipped cream was sweet and thick. The bad news, aside from the wait and the price, was that everything was high in fat. It left our tongues feeling like they were coated with wax. I get that there's a lot of hype right now, and people want to try it because of that. So, to help you get past that point and evolve to where you'll realize that Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is just around the corner, here are a few tips. 1) If you're driving, let your line-stander(s) out at the end of the line. 2) Have them wait and place the order for your entire party. Drive a block or two away and wait. 2.5) With this place, less is more. By that, I mean the stuff is so rich that anything good about the flavor starts to wear off after the first few spoonfuls. And, from our experience, after trying four different combinations, the simpler concoctions are a bit more appetizing. 3) If possible, pick one thing to share. Trust me, a "Mini" cup, their smallest size, is plenty for two, and maybe even three, people. 4) Give the driver's phone number and the line-stander's name when you enter your order into one of the two absurd tablets sitting out front. 5) When your order is ready, they'll call your name and text the driver. 6) Drive back, pick your ice cream, and (what the heck) the people who stood in line for 45 minutes to order it for them and you. 7) Drive someplace else because there are only two tables on the sidewalk, you don't get to go inside... ever, and they are guaranteed to be in use. Before you do ANY of this, wait a while. Give it a month. Unless you feel compelled to do things because everyone on the internet seems to be doing them (TidePods?!?), maybe give it a little time. You might find the bloom drops off this rose, much like your desire to eat more of their ice cream after the third or fourth spoonful. read more

Yesterday was their grand opening so my friends and I waited in line for a bit over an hour, but it was so incredibly worth it!! The ice cream came out surprisingly fast for the volume of people ordering so their staff must be trained incredibly well. Their menu has 75 (!!) different sundae options, so with that hour wait we had plenty of time to evaluate our options. I got the Get Baked sundae, which has their cookie dough ice cream, edible cookie dough, toffee sprinkles, and chocolate buttercream icing. Genuinely, the best sundae I think I've ever had, and for a 'mini' size I could barely finish it. You could easily split it with another person, and they had 3 larger sizes to pick from. Price is on the higher end, but for the amount of ice cream you actually get, it ends up feeling like a bargain. I did not realize this was the soft opening and the real grand opening is in a couple of days but nevertheless I was able to get some ice cream from here. They have two kiosks out front and there was a little bit of a wait to use them since their menu is so extensive with their sundaes and what you can customize. I think I preferred the double stuffed one though. They were quite tasty and I felt like they were a bargain at $10 considering how big they were. It's the new must thing to try... My foodie adventure at Scoops N Scootery began with a hiccup. I placed an order online for a following Sunday 3:30 pm pickup. I know, such a wait, but I wanted to avoid the line. Skip ahead to the Sunday for my Sundae. When I arrived at 3:45 PM( time I was instructed to arrive on the confirmation), I was informed that online ordering hadn't opened yet. I confirmed my order # and payment, and the manager offered to place a new order for me. After about 20 minutes, he called me back to the window, stating he was entering my order using and his credit card. I inquired if DoorDash would refund him for covering the payment. He repeated that he could not find my order in his system. Shortly after, I received a notification that my DoorDash order had been canceled, and a refund was issued. When I finally picked up my sundaes, I mentioned the refund and paid with my card. Now, onto the ice cream: my custom creation--packed with fruit, cone pieces, and pretzels--was tasty, but the Nutella core I ordered was nearly non-existent, with just a thin smear along the bowl's sides which was disappointing. As it was a take out order, I didn't realize this until I got home. The other two sundaes, Vanilla Frosted Cupcake and French Revolution, fell short as well. Scoops N Scootery is a viral sensation, but it is hard to tell if it's warranted. What are they doing that other ice cream shops aren't? Originally I had judged them more harshly, but I can't stop coming back for my Minis with no toppings, so Ive bumped my review up to a 4! Once you make it through their exhaustive menu (which is only so long because they are creating individually named "sundaes" out of different combinations of toppings) you realize their actual menu is 18 ice cream flavors, 21 core/tunnel options, and 46 storebought toppings that are combined in various ways into the sundaes. At any other ice cream shop, you can ask for different toppings, so I think this sundae format of presentation isn't as inventive as it seems at first. It's also overwhelming and not super helpful for choosing what you want. It does make the product much more instagramable and increases the cost of the average ice cream orders, so I see why they do it. Adding a "core" or "tunnel" of brownie to your ice cream costs $3 and adding whipped cream costs $2.45. So on top of the base price for a Mini of $7.43 (post-tax), you're paying an additional $6 for the sundae treatment as advertised. My first visit here cost me $14 for one ice cream sundae, which is double what most ice cream shops charge for their entry-level products. The topping prices especially are quite high. For example, pretzels are $1.48 to add and Reeses are $1.89. If you want value for your money, I would probably skip straight to the build-your-own section and choose exactly what you want and nothing else. If you do find a sundae with the toppings you want that's already a named offering, then that may save you some money. So, as this is mostly an ice cream shop, let's talk about the ice cream! The ice cream itself is decent quality, but it is hard to distinguish their handmade mix from storebought brands. It is a little sweet and reminds me of Breyers/Fairlife, but much fresher. The flavors are interesting, but they lack the inventiveness of Van Leeuwen or Salt and Straw. Instead Scoop N Scootery is relying on their topping combinations, which is a little disappointing. I think the texture is good and I did not get any ice crystals in my trips here so far. If the ice cream flavors were more inventive, less sweet, and higher in butterfat, I think they could justify the higher pricing with no issues. Additionally, the lack of a vegan option or sorbet seems like an oversight. Some highlights are the service here which is incredible and they are very efficient with order distribution. The owner is very friendly and seems genuinely excited about the product. He is often working there and is great with customer service. A pro (or con) is that the portion sizes are absolutely massive and I measured 450g of ice cream in one Mini (1,200 calories). That is basically equal to a pint of ice cream. I would probably share this with someone or save some for later (how?). This is my seventh ice cream review and it's a tough review to write. I've been pretty conflicted on my final verdict, especially given how popular they are right now. I went a total of three times because I wanted to be absolutely sure before I posted my review, but then I ended up going three more times after that and I changed my mind to edit it: I think this is a 4-star ice cream shop. I would swing by here if the wait was less than 5 minutes and I just wanted a lot of ice cream (no cores or toppings). That comes in at $7.43 for about a pint of fresh ice cream, which isn't bad when compared to grocery stores. When you add in the core/tunnel/cream/topping prices and the often 20+ minute line, I think it's not worth it. It will be interesting to see how it's going in a year! read more

I thought with how high volume of traffic there was, I would be waiting at least 25 mins of the order to be ready but they proved me wrong with their impeccable service! As for the sweet treat, it was amazing. I love sweets especially ice cream AND cake!? I was sold the minute my eyes landed on the Reign of Terror, which was red velvet cake. It was delicious! They are all definitely on the sweeter side, so I highly recommend it for people who have a sweeter tooth to try it out. For the price of $10 for a mini and about $11 for a tasty, is not a bad price for how loaded it was. I can't complain! Overall, wonderful experience, despite the wait.
