A visit to Total Wine in Encinitas for "curbside pickup" now includes a complimentary gaslighting session. I ordered a specific vintage Rioja online for curbside pickup. They swapped my order with a younger vintage and failed to mention it. No email. No, "We substituted this because we're out of stock--is that okay?" They quietly swapped it, hoping I wouldn't notice or wouldn't care. But I was buying a Rioja, not a Walmart box wine. I discovered the switch, had to leave my car, grab a shopping cart, go back inside, and find someone to help. That's when the tap dance began. The first employee pretended that vintages didn't matter. He called in the self-proclaimed expert, who introduced himself with, "I'm the wine guy. What's the problem?" As it turns out, the problem was standing right in front of me. Rather than acknowledge that substituting a vintage without informing the customer might be an issue, he spent several minutes explaining why it shouldn't matter. Eventually he landed on, "It's just a $30 bottle of wine." Actually, it was a case. Twelve bottles--$360 of wine. He asserted the two wines were equally rated when they were not. A review from home revealed the younger substitute averaged a full point lower rating (WA, WS, JD, WE, TA). As I explained that vintage and ratings represent value, he interrupted. When I politely asked not to be interrupted, he rolled his eyes, looked away, and said it was time to find a manager. Manager David was as helpful as helpful as a light bulb without electricity. He asked what the problem was. I went through the list, concluding that if he wanted to sell a younger wine with a questionable rating he should have said so and provided some kind of discount. He seemed remarkably uninterested in discussing wine ratings, vintages and economics, so I asked for a refund. That took another ten minutes on top of the twenty I had already wasted. As I left, he offered a casual, "Sorry about that," delivered with all the sincerity of an automated voicemail. Total Wine in Encinitas may be convenient, but their service, honesty and wine knowledge is not. I prefer Vintage Wines out on Miramar Rd for superior wine knowledge, service and honesty. read more

I had a fantastic customer service experience at this location. I went for a seasonal 20% off Winery Direct label sale and received unsolicited help and recommendations from Bill, who had just got done teaching a wine class and clearly knew what he was doing. Some of the product is misplaced. For example, there were Argentine Cabs in the Malbec section. But other than that, everything else seemed to be pretty organized and I was mostly able to find what I was looking for thanks to Bill. I'm surprised I haven't written a review yet, but here I am. I've been going to this location since it opened and when I need any kind of alcohol I come to total wine. They definitely have a huge selection. I like using the discounts in the app as well since sometimes they aren't the cheapest. The staff is usually helpful and I enjoy happening upon the tastings they have. I have tasted quite a few things that I then purchased. I have also taken several classes at this location. I always take away new knowledge which I appreciate. The last class I took was my favorite so far. I liked most of the wines I tried whereas others not so much. I even bought a bottle of the one I liked most. The charcuterie they include is an added bonus. The sommelier teacher (Bill) is knowledgeable and answers questions happily and throughly. This is not about the store (I shopped here a few times, service always great and knowledgeable), but it's about online account and how to delete it. I created the account, but then I realized that it will work for a frequent buyer (not me). So I went back to my online account and I could not find, how to delete account? I never saw such thing before, so I had to go to AI which pointed me to 2 options - either call customer service (which is never a good option) or data deletion request thru their portal (which I did). Now I'm still waiting for email from Total Wine to confirm my request and the process of deletion to begin (which could take up to 45 days). read more

So first of all, I like the basic concept of Total Wine. I find the service at the back of the store is exceptional, they know where everything is and they know the deals so for that they get a five star. Now we get to the register, and yesterday I had a lady named Lisa. I checked out. You could see the haul and when I was paying, I asked what discount I got from the app. She said none let me see your app. I said you don't have Wi-Fi in the store to bring up my app, but I have my code in my phone wallet so you can use that to give me any discounts. She looked at me, shook her head and said nope. Not exactly the Customer Service I'm looking for, so it's back to BevMo. or any other place that has a customer reward program that works. I've only been here once, but was able to find an employee quick and get the help/advice I needed to get my husband his Valentine's Day gift. Angela guided me to the area where I could find what he wanted and glasses to serve it in. I was out'a there in a flash, exactly what I wanted, I didn't have much time that day. The store itself was beautiful, clean and organized with easy to read signs. The staff I came in contact with was super helpful and nice as well. It was obvious they enjoyed their jobs and were happy to be there (and if not, they faked it well!). Stumbled upon this place while looking up how I can get moonshine after vacationing at tn! They had ol smoky moonshine and every other one I looked at in tn! They even had little bottles to try if you didn't wanna buy the actual size yet. Customer service was great, everyone was nice and answered all our questions. Also want to try the wine tasting here. They also have every hard kombucha, seltzer, and ipa you can think of here too. Plus every visit you get really good coupons based on what you purchase. Total Wine finally made it to San Diego County a few months ago, and the furthest north location is this one in Encinitas. We got some great coupons in the mail for $25 off $75 or more purchase, so I clipped it and headed over for some Blue Label. Whole browsing, I saw the 2022 Laphroaig Cairdeas and got that instead since it's a limited annual release (Blue Label will always be around) and the 2012 Cairdeas is my favorite scotch of all time. We already got into it, and it's phenomenal! A smoke bomb followed by gentle plumes of smoke. If you're a peaty smoky Islay fan, you have to try this! We also picked up a bottle of Kura, a Japanese whiskey made with Hokkaido peat (lighter on the peat, but rare peat in a Japanese whiskey -- another must try if you're into peaty whiskey. Had to come and see this new location, I was really excited since I loved the one in Temecula. I was equally impressed with this location. I also found out that you can check online on the app, and see if they have in stock the drink/thing you're looking for. The first trip to this store actually saved us on our way to a last minute birthday, we found the perfect gift on the app, and was able to make sure that it was available at this store before we even got there. Not to mention the options here for whatever kind of drinks you're into is massive. I loved that they have so many local drinks here to buy too. I will absolutely come here again. I agree with the reviews about the look and feel of the new store. I have. couple of issues that I hope they can work out or I wont be going back. First one is that they send great looking coupons in the mail but so far they are worthless because they are always out of stock on the items advertised. Seems like a bait and switch to me. Does it make sense to stock up on coupon items or is that just me? They just sent one with a free item featured but guess what, unavailable. Lots of disappointed shoppers yesterday. Second, the wines they feature are mystery wines and probably made from grapes grown in Fresno. Yes they have some name brand wines but those are priced way above a grocery store. While the store certainly boasts a clean interior and very well organized shelves, I was floored by the attitude of the staff. Truly couldn't tell if it was because I looked young or because I was in my work clothes (which are admittedly covered in dried silicone but still decent), but I was given two very direct looks of disgust. Not a single person helped me as I circled the store twice. I did not find what I was looking for and the attitude put me off asking anyone. I noticed quite a few other people we're receiving help otherwise. I picked up the order I originally came in for- over $100 bourbon (which I wish was wrapped instead of lain in the box like this) and left without dropping an additional sum on what I was hoping to find. The Encinitas store needs better staff training and customer service. I've purchased from Total Wine locations in Orange County without incident. I've paid two visits to Total Wine in Encinitas, both unsatisfactory. First time I ordered online for pickup. When I got home, my order was wrong. I was told to come pick up the item, it would be waiting for me. It was not. The clerk had to get it off the shelf. Yesterday, I went to purchase a product that was in the locked cabinet. The man who came to get it for me told me he'd have to look for it on the shelf, even though it was right there in the cabinet. He got a massive ladder, climbed up to the topmost shelf and started looking in boxes. When he could not find it, he came down and took the product out of the cabinet and brought it to the front. He didn't say anything to me, he put it behind the customer service counter. I guess I was supposed to know the procedure. I stood there looking at him and he, with slight annoyance, told me to get into line, so I did and the checkout woman got it for me behind the customer service counter. Why make me wait while you climb up and look through boxes? That's your internal housekeeping. I don't have time to waste waiting around for a simple transaction, when what I wanted was right there on the shelf. Total Wine Encinitas is 2 for 2 in poor employee training.
