If you're vegetarian, or Vegan; Hindu, Jain, or Buddhist, read no further. This is not a place for you. Also, the meat here isn't halal or kosher. But, if you are looking for a place that has fresh poultry, there's no better choice. The absolute best turkeys. Other birds like peasant, duck, goose, and of course, chicken. There's a 1950s era chicken statue on the roof, as if roadside on a U.S. Highway back in "Happy Days." Service is very fast, even if there's a line, so you really need to be ready to order. Excellent selection of stuffing, sausage, home made pierogi, poultry seasoning, marinades, and barbecue sauces. One of the women working behind the counter struck me as being really familiar... ever bump into someone you know in a very different context than you usually see them so you can't figure out how you know them? Maybe not, but I'm an absent minded professor so it happens to me a lot. I mention this because this is one of those places where a lot of their customers are regulars, and they recognize them. When it's not just-before-Thanksgiving craziness, they will chop up your chicken the way you want it (eighths is the best way to make Sri Lankan style curry).

I tend do go meatless when cooking for myself so if I'm going to spring for a bird, I like to go for the best and Tower is just that. Why is it the best? CHICKEN ON THE ROOF. How do you like it? Big, small, whole, half, with bone, without, skin or no skin. However you like your breasts, they can fulfill your meaty desires. If you're into legs or thighs, they've got that too.

Do they make sausage made from chicken?

Yes, and it's wonderful. Chicken garlic is our favorite and the chicken Italian is my go-to for sandwiches and sauces. You won't be disappointed. Chicken breakfast I like, but like their pork breakfast better. It's ALL good, honest.

I was excited to be in Milwaukee today, given the many restaurants that have earned recognition…read morefrom the James Beard Awards. Most of those spots only open for dinner, so I was thrilled to find that Bavette La Boucherie now serves lunch. My friend, a local, told me the restaurant originally began as a butcher shop. While that's no longer the case, the space still pays tribute to its roots -- shelves lined with kitchen knick-knacks, butcher-block counters, and a display of local provisions that hint at its past. Chef-owner Karen Bell leads the way here, and you can feel her touch throughout -- from the creative menu to the casual-elegant vibe. The décor blends exposed brick and warm wood with soft light and a friendly hum from the open kitchen. Our server, Matthew R., had only been with Bavette a couple of weeks, but his background in restaurant management showed. He was knowledgeable, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Before our sandwiches arrived, we shared a cup of pork and tomatillo pozole topped with cabbage slaw and a dollop of sour cream. It was piping hot, bright, and deeply flavorful -- the kind of starter that makes you stop talking for a minute just to enjoy the next spoonful. Having read rave reviews of the Korean steak au jus, I nearly ordered it, but Matthew suggested the roast-beef with cheddar since I'm not a big lunch eater. Excellent call. The sandwich was divine -- tender, flavorful beef layered with melted cheddar on a crisp, perfectly toasted roll. The beef-fat fries had great depth of flavor, though I'd love them even more if they were twice-cooked for that extra crunch. Being more of a gin or vodka drinker, I couldn't resist the Gin Old Fashioned on the cocktail list. It was delicious -- smooth, aromatic, and balanced enough that I happily ordered a second. Great food, warm service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Bavette La Boucherie is a gem I can't wait to revisit.

Its heavy attended volume is well deserved; lots of interesting stalls line the ground floor, from coffee and candy to bbq and Thai. I wouldn't say it could replace regular grocery shopping; it's more like a fancy spot to shop for artisan goods like cured meats, sweet treats, baked goods, and other accoutrement. Plenty of seating on the open second floor (also a good spot to take photos of the market) if you want to eat there; otherwise grab some delicious food to go and enjoy the surrounding neighborhood!

Compared to other public markets we've visited, it felt much smaller, with roughly 30 or so vendors and food stalls to explore. Parking was also a hassle and added to the frustration of the visit. Once inside, one thing that stood out was how often we were reminded that the market would be closing soon. While we understood the closing time and weren't trying to stay past it, multiple reminders from different vendors made us feel a bit rushed as we looked around. There were some interesting food and shopping options, and it's worth a quick stop if you're already in the area. However, based on our experience, it didn't quite live up to the hype and wasn't as impressive as other public markets we've visited.
