What a joke, went there off season and naturally there were only 2 occupied tables. The bartender (I guess Larry is his name) nodded with no expression on his face and the waitress (Olivia) paid zero attention to us. We waited a few minutes and proceeded to a vacant table. 10-15 minutes later (not sure what took them so long, there were only a few people in the place) that waitress comes over and states arrogantly we will have to move. I explain we would prefer to stay at the same table after which she turns around angrily, goes somewhere, returns and starts spraying the table to clean it, spraying us with cleaning solution in the process as if to punish us! What a ridiculous attitude to some of the very few clients you will get off season! That girl has some issues and needs some serious training! Location and atmosphere good, food needs lots of work. Town is a cozy restaurant in a prime downtown Nantucket location. It has a warm feel with an engaging bar dominating the entrance of the small restaurant. The Asian fusion feel fails with limited offerings. The sushi was average. The confused menu offers only a beet salad (no greens) and the pea soup appetizer was disappointing. The steak was too salty. The service was above average. The wine list by the bottle was surprisingly good. I was pleased to find a fine, limited production Napa Cab - O'Shaughnessy (Howell Mountain), 94 Wine Spectator and priced at $135 and a Chateau Clarke (Medoc) for $75. This said, there were no drinkable wines by the glass - fortunately, my party was ready for bottles. read more

Very disappointing experience tonight. They are extremely opaque about what you're getting. For example, I ordered ceviche. On Nantucket, you would think that would include local seafood. Nope, instead it was almost entirely squid. And bad squid at that. And when I complained they asked if I wanted something else. I said no - but had no idea whether they took it off the bill or left it on (see below). The "NY steak" wasn't really a steak, it was a couple of anemic slices of steak, smothered in some indeterminate sauce. And when the bill came, even though we were six people, we didn't ever actually see the final addition, which meant we had no idea if they had taken the tip out or not. Some of the food was good. But without transparency of what you're actually getting - whether food or the bill - I cannot recommend this restaurant. you can do much better on Nantucket than Town. read more

Very disappointing. Enjoyed Town when we tried it a couple of years ago. Went there tonight and all three entrees were unappealing. The chicken curry was bland, the halibut was over cooked and dry with a flavorless risotto and the steak was a little tough with a brown glaze that again was flavorless. My friend kept raving about Town, a new restaurant on the same side street as the Nerta (bus service) office and opposite the side entrance door to the police station. Town boasts a beautiful back yard, very inviting in summer and comfortable.. We sat at the elegant intimate bar and had a surprising drink: Asian Pear Margarita, all I can say is: Wow!!! The bartender a more than personable young lady, Susan, I think from Cork was professional without being snobby which I appreciated. She was a lady and judging by our drinks creative to the max. She served others with that wonderful elan of loving her job. In conversation I learned that this hardworking young woman had another job as well. Impressive. Town is elegant, trendy and a lovely place to eat and drink. Their Sushi menu seems favored by most. I recommend it highly. read more

Apps cost too much and are very small. Don't order any of the asian dishes as they have no clue how to make them and will be rude when you complain about the lack of taste. We have been fans of Town since it r opened. John you are letting us all down. Our service was fine but the food? We can not express how disappointed we were with the Argentinian Platter. Great indoor and outdoor atmosphere but horrible service. It took 20 minutes to be acknowledged by our waiter. The hostess felt so bad that she took our drink and appetizer order. The restaurant was hardly full capacity yet it took another 20 minutes for 1 sushi appetizer. Outside bartender made a great cocktail but inside was a different story. This place is just OK. Slow service but decent/good food. However they use a very slimy technique of including auto gratuity of 20% AND STILL provide the tip table to suggest further tips. And of course in the tip table the previous gratuity is included!!!! This is so scammy. The food was worth the wait, but the wait was made much more painful by blasting pop music. It aggravates me to no end the electronic-somebody's -declared-this-"hip" music that is often found playing too loudly in fusion restaurants these days. Were there nice traditional Asian music of ANY sort I would have been able to relax into the warm, rustic, ethnic artifact laden environment, and really tasted the flavors. Instead, my spine bristled at every new house re-mix of an overplayed pop song. Not exactly the ambiance to catch up with older relatives. They were confused by my facial expressions. We should have left the moment we arrived, the host was not where to be found for 5 mins when we finally got seated we waited another 10 mins for the waitress. We ordered tuna tartar and mussels alla Portuguese, the tartar arrived immediately but the mussels arrived 20 mins later as I was eating I found 7 mussels unopened. Our entries took another 25mins to arrive we ordered Halibut and seafood soup (I don't remember the exact name) the Halibut was overcook and my soup had no taste no seasoning the only thing I liked was the bread. We didn't even eat it. The waitress didn't even come to pick up the check with our credit card, someone else had to come and charge us. I would give 0 star if I had a choice. My husband and I came here for dinner and ordered the tacos, shrimp tempura roll, chicken vindaloo and thai curry shrimp We really liked it as it was the only place on the island which had some of an Indian touch to the food! After waiting at the bar for close to an hour for our reserved table our group was approached by a waitress who told us we were too loud. We accommodated the restaurant by leaving. This was after another very young waitress in a wet rain slicker had rubbed against me four times, soaking the back of my shirt. I'm not sure why we even waited that long. Unique Indian-inspired cuisine, and an interesting selection of small plates makes this a good place to start a crawl of Nantucket's fine dining. The tandoori lobster is worth a try; the chef wisely balanced the flavors more towards a butter sauce than the strong spice of typical tandoori chicken. The truffled slider is just about an ideal small plate: modest price, quality ingredients (while the naan cut with a biscuit cutter for a 'bun' was not house-made, it was still OK: good naan would have made this a 5*) Bar is much less happening than the Pearl. The atmosphere here is the best part. Very cozy and well decorated. Started out with a drink at the bar and like much of the Nantucket service industry the foreign gentleman bartender was a little rude and acting way too busy for the few people that were there. This from someone who has bar-tended for years. Table service was pretty good. They just kept forgetting plates, silverware, etc., but our waitress was very sweet. Ahi Tuna & Avocado Stack - Tuna was fine; the avocado was literally M.I.A. There were two pieces the size of my thumbnail. Moules a la Portugaise - Lackluster affair of a paltry white wine sauce, supposed chorizo (didn't resemble chorizo in taste or color), mushy tomatoes, and close to fragrant* mussels. *Fragrant = Spoiled Spicy Tuna Roll - Great. No problems here. "Forgettable" Randy - I can't remember the first name of this imposter of an Indian dish, but it was absolutely forgettable. Upside Down Blueberry Cake - Just OK. Would revisit for a drink... but hopefully with a different bartender! read more

The service here was abysmal. Literally abysmal. I waited over 30 minutes just to have my water glass filled. Every time the server came over to our table, she made up some excuse as to why she was being so slow. It was miserable. The ambiance is nice, and the food is average. Hey Town thanks for canceling our reservation as we were walking to your restaurant. We have had a tornado / sever storm watch since 4pm. At 5:55pm you cancel our 6pm reservation. Why did you do this? When we made the reservation you never said it was outside seating. I guess you will take our money or our chances with the weather even though the whole Island knew the weather report was terrible. This is probably the busiest Friday with the Boston Pops tomorrow. The spices are too complicated and don't work together, even if you like Thai, Indian, etc. The night we were there I was appalled at the portion size (small) vs. the price. $10 each for scallops? I called the next day to say something only because I am a foodie and thought I should. Town advertises specials where they offer 2 courses for $25 dollars between 530-630pm. We made a reservation for 6pm and when we were set to order our waiter said the special doesn't apply on holiday weekends. We pointed out that it says no such thing on their web site or on the mahonabouttown web site. The waiter still refused to honor the offer. My dinner companion is a school teacher on island, and she said they had pulled the same thing on some friends of hers before. While the portions at Town are small, they are fairly good... but they are not reputable, and there are so many more good restaurants with friendly, professional waitstaff that serve as good if not better meals and will be there when this restaurant goes under. The owners of this restaurant own 2 others and they have been flirting with bankruptcy lately. Obviously their waitstaff won't be considered as an asset by foreclosing banks or past customers. Give this place a wide berth. read more

Ok. This place was awesome. 8 of us, including 4 kids. We had a great time and the food was awesome. Sort of an eclectic mix of food...Indian, American, and Japanese. I hear the chef is Japanese and it shows- the sushi is awesome, the noodles were great. Has a kids menu. Drinks were seriously strong. The mint julep was tasty, the Nantucket red was like the punches you find at a frat house, tasty and strong, and the wine list was excellent. Dessert menu sounded tasty. Go! read more

OK - do let's shoot For a counterpoint: after a day of biling on Nantucket and have not mad dinner reservations (because not everyone wants to plan their week ahead of time) we found a table for 3, an awesome meal and good service. The scallops with soba noodles are excellent. So were the fries in my daughter's kids meal. Perhaps this is not the best venue on Nantucket, but definitely not a bad choice for a casual dinner. read more

Very bad experience. We called ahead and asked if Town was child-friendly. They assured us it was. We had four adults, a 12, 11, 6 year-old and a 9-month old. When we arrived the hostess gave the kids menus, then asked the ages of the children. We gave her the ages, and she responded by taking the kids menus from the 12 and 11-year-olds, stating they needed to be 10 or under to order from the kids menus. That was rude. Then we asked one of the servers - not our server (she was great) - if there was a changing station for our 9-month-old in the ladies room. She told us there wasn't unfortunately, but then walked over to the hostess, who was no more than 10-12 feet away and mentioned something about it to her. It was clear they were talking about us by the body language. At that moment, it was obvious we weren't welcome. Our server pleaded with us to stay, as did the manager, but we were completely turned off at that point. The manager insisted our drinks were on the house, which was a wonderful gesture, but not enough to keep us there. We can't speak about the quality of the meals (we left), but the hostess was just incredibly impersonal and rude. There were eight of us - they would've made a good amount of money. read more
