Honestly surprised by the low ratings (only 3 stars, what!) We went to Galley 2 days in a row, the first time just for drinks after a dip in the ocean, and the second for a proper brunch. Yes, the menu is pricey, but given the location and quality I think it's fair. I had the lobster roll and it was incredible! So so good, I still think about that dish. Drinks were excellent too. I have no clue why this place has 3 stars because my sister and I were visiting Nantucket and this was HIGHLY recommended to us. We made a reservation will in advance and of course you have to make it around the sunset. We thought the food was well worth the price for a nicer dinner and we had the best view of the beach. Our waiter was phenomenal!!! He made so many great recommendations and made sure we got a little bit of everything. We came with our kids and grandkids for lunch around 2.30 , we ordered lunch and after 3:00 our toddler granddaughter got hungry so we tried to order food for her , the waitress said there is no food for kids after three and I said can you just bring her something to eat?she insisted that no food can be served for kids so I asked for the manager Peter dunlavey he was very rude and said this is the rules we can't change it, we were very surprised and appalled at his rudeness . When my daughter told him when we were leaving, you could've been kinder he said if you don't like it, you leave right now and he asked me to leave the restaurant when I told him what he did is not acceptable you should've been more polite and accommodating to feed a child , we will never go back there again. It was beyond us to be treated this way never this happened to us anywhere or by anyone this is not acceptable. Very unprofessional , this should be addressed the the owner. That manager should not be working in a respectable environment, he was beyond rude beyond . the worst experience where ever encountered anywhere. What a gorgeous view. We sat where we could look out at the beach and ocean and watch the sunset. There was a parking lot in front of the restaurant if you managed to bring a car to Nantucket. The service was impeccable. There was always a waiter within earshot. He kept our waters fully all times. I started off with a stuffed eggplant with apricots, currents and yogurt. It was devine. I wish they would share the recipe. For a main course, I had a grilled veal chop over a bed of warm wild rice and mushrooms. I had it cooked medium rare. I would give it six stars but I am only allowed five. I would definitely return if I ever had the opportunity. A definite must if ever visiting the island. read more

Nothing beats the view of the sunset at this restaurant. The couches and tables set up on the beach. Some with fire tables are just gorgeous! The service was great! Especially considering how busy it was. The dining room was so loud we could hardly speak across the table. But it is to be expected. Considering it is a busy restaurant. The price fix dinner at $89 seems reasonable, but everything that we chose off the menu was an extra cost. It seems that most things are an extra cost. We are used to Manhattan prices, so it's not that it's unusual for us to spend money for a nice dinner. The food was average and did not reflect the cost. A 23% gratuity is added to the check, which no one tells you when they drop it off. We had two appetizers, two entrées, one cocktail, one cup of coffee and a $97 bottle of wine. The check was $458. You have to make a reservation for a table outside to watch the sunset, as well as a table inside for dinner. I would definitely go back for the sunset, but I would dine someplace else for dinner. read more

We didn't have a reservation, but were able to be seated at a high top with a wonderful beach view. Our server Jimmy was knowledgeable and kind! We could tell he got a little stressed due to his tables being spread out so much, but he did a great job giving us a lovely experience. Definitely plan to finish dinner by 7, because once the sun goes down it gets pretty dark and you lose that beautiful scenery. For a very special evening, Galley Beach is the place to go. Reservations open two weeks prior to your requested date. So, you may not have that spectacular sunset on the night you go. The menu is price fix for two courses. $89 per person. The restaurant adds an automatic 23% gratuity to the bill; 3% of which goes directly to the kitchen. Our server was personable and knowledgeable; the kitchen works with finicky customers as well. Our food was delicious and hot. The menu has many items which are upcharged. So, I ordered the beef filet; it was a $16 add on! My two course dinner was $105! Neither my wife nor I drink alcohol. Our bill came to $299; which included the food tax and mandatory 23% gratuity. One caveat; the sunset was spectacular, if not brief. read more

We ordered a kids pasta for my daughter and this is the bowl they gave it to her in- no joke. It looked like it was a bowl ffor ketchup that's how small it was. And then I ordered a panini off the menu which came with salami - I asked them if I can have that taken off to I have a vegetarian option and they said no because the paninis are pre-made... which was surprising to hear at a restaurant like the Galley. Eh The Kitchen was strong, every dish we ordered was delicious. We ordered one of every appetizer, and each was very good at minimum, none were to die for or would bring me back a second visit. Our Entrees were also enjoyable. Balanced flavor profiles, nothing overwhelming or unpleasing. Typically heavy dishes such the chicken and pork chop were well plated with appropriate peripheral components. Both entrees pictured were well prepared overall and met my expectations of the establishment. The wine we ordered was delicious. The reason for my low, 2-star rating is the service. All four guests in our party agreed that the service was very rushed and that the wait staff pushed strongly to free up our table for the next guests despite no prior notice of a set dining time period. While we wanted to enjoy, and continue ordering from, their well appointed wine list, we were instead hurried out the door. With a stronger front of house, Galley Beach could be outstanding, an undoubtably 5-star shop. I may or may not return next time we're on island but I probably won't recommend to anyone until I can confirm first hand that the staff is capable of providing a level of service that matches the quality of their food and wine. read more

Wow, I'm completely shocked by the low reviews of this establishment. My third season in Nantucket and Galley Beach is always a highlight. Lunch or Dinner. Afternoon drinks or nightcaps. The staff is welcoming, attentive and professional. Impressive views. If the clouds cooperate you can catch some of the best sunsets in your life. The critiques on pricing seem very unfair as pricing is in line with other restaurants on the island. Fresh produce, attention to detail and a caring staff really make this the place to be on Nantucket. Lobster spring roll are amazing. But so is the very simple omelette for lunch. Pro- atmosphere and service Con- food was mid, nothing I would crave and have to have again. Drinks had NO alcohol. I had a martini which was tasty but very small and had no alcohol. I switched to a Paloma which was larger, but again no alcohol. My husband ordered two martinis and a Tito's and soda - again- hardly any alcohol in them. We are not big drinkers so 2 drinks for me and 3 drinks for my husband in a little over one hour usually is a lot- but - there could not have been the normal amount of alcohol. We felt scammed! We are paying $25 a drink plus 23 percent gratuity for juice. Galley Beach should be ashamed. If you go- go for cocktail hour and order wine. At least you know you are getting what you paid for: the view and drinks! - We will never return. We will not support any business we consider dishonest. My wife and I dined at Galley Beach this week to celebrate her birthday and we were disappointed from start to finish. The restaurant was overcrowded and the space between tables was minimal. The couple next to us was uncomfortable with the seating and discussed leaving, which they did after an appetizer. Service was rushed as it was evident that tables needed to be turned as quickly as possible. At one point the Somm brought our wine over from the ice bucket without a towel and cold water dripped from his hand on my warm dinner. Our entrees were disappointing. My wife ordered the grilled black Angus filet mignon with seasonal vegetables, potato gratin, green peppercorn reduction. The vegetables and potato were over seasoned and the very nice looking filet was inedible due to the excessive spice in the reduction. She scraped off as much as possible but neither of us could taste the steak. The server saw that we were having an issue but didn't offer a solution. My halibut was so salty I quit after a few bites. At that point dinner was over. We feel the $89.00 per person fixed price plus the additional $37.00 in up charges for the apps + entrees with a mandatory 23% gratuity was a total waste of our money. This place was great seven years ago and it's still great! Dined here for dinner, we had exceptional waiter service, very pleasant bartender and hostess. I brought my parents here for their wedding anniversary (they have never been to Nantucket) and they were very happy with everything! My mother loved her hanger steak (she is super fussy) and my father had the swordfish special and enjoyed it. I was a bit disappointed with my seafood in broth entree. All the fish was overcooked (chewy) and the portion was very small. That is my only complaint! The sunsets are to die for and you will not find a better outdoor ambiance on the island. Come here for the views! I've never been anywhere else where you had fine dining while sitting right on the beach. We came at 5:30 and ended up staying past sunset. My boyfriend and I had a few cocktails with my favorite being the espresso martini. Side-note - Save room for dessert and get the creme brûlée it was amazing we still talk about how good it was!! 2 stars (.5-1 star for dinner but 3.5-4 stars for separate sunset outdoor cocktails experience afterward). I'd recommend avoiding dinner there and just doing cocktails. We made reservations 2 weeks in advance to have dinner at a beachside table--my primary interest in the restaurant at all--only to be called by an aggressive hostess day of to confirm my reservation but insist it was made for indoor seating. Because we still had outdoor reservations for cocktails and at that point would not be able to get a reservation anywhere else, I complied and ignored this red flag. When we get there half of the tables outside, of course, are empty but allegedly reserved. When it came to the dinner, I've had had better meals at chains in strip malls than their $100/pp 2 course price fixe. Stale room temp bread. Really really mediocre, tourist trap food (dry halibut, overcooked filet); low quality wines $29 a glass. Service inside was also pretty terrible. Appetizers came out 5 minutes before first round, entrees 10 minutes before second round, all at 6pm when the place was only about 40% full. 23% Gratuity, btw, is already included in the bill. The saving grace of the experience was the outdoor cocktails after. Night and day difference in service with our outdoor server vs indoor. Great drinks, good recommendations by our server, cool experience beachside under the stars. I write few reviews and even fewer bad ones, but felt compelled because this place is hyped up but delivered an awful dinning experience reeking of pretentious jerks trying to take advantage of visitors. I know hospitality right now is challenging and there were some bright spots (The manager who seated us seemed nice, our cocktail server was excellent, attentive somm) but expected much better when it came to delivering on the reservation we made, the menu, and indoor service for a meal that came out to about $380 for 2. read more

I went here with some friends for lunch/brunch on Sunday and we absolutely loved it! It has very cute decor throughout the restaurant, filled with palms. There is an option to sit inside, on their patio, and on the beach! They also have a more casual "beach lounge" where you can go to grab a bite after a day at the beach in your bathing suit, which we'll totally do next time. We got lobster rolls, a burger, and chicken salad sandwich which all were delicious. I did eye the brunch dishes as they came out and they looked amazing too. The service was great and so were the cocktails. Overall, they had a lot of food options that all sounded appealing and something on the menu for everyone. The staff is really pretentious, they charged $100 for 3 drinks at the bar and only filled up the champagne glass half full. It also used to be be a fun bar scene but they don't have enough bartenders and they ones who work there act as if they are doing a chore to get drinks orders. They add on all these hidden service charge fees on top of the super high prices so no wonder the staff has stopped caring. I'm really not sure where to begin. We've been going to Galley Beach for the last 12 years, and my wife has for much longer than that. We have had many excellent date nights while on Nantucket, and we even had my parents' 40th anniversary dinner there years ago. It has been a can't miss...until last night. My wife and I were seated, and noticed they've done away with table cloths and cloth napkins, and have shifted to a 2-course prix fixe menu. Different, but fine. We then waited 15 to 20 minutes to be greeted by our server, and the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. When he did come, he said, "Are you ready to order?" No apology for the wait, no explanation of the soup or any specials, no offer to start with drinks. Our first course was entirely ordinary. A hummus plate you could find at your favorite Irish pub and a spring vegetable tasting, which was basically cut up raw veggies in a line. The second course was much better. I had halibut and my wife had a lobster pasta dish. Our dessert was also very good - creme brûlée and panna cotta. I've also included a picture of the restroom, which included an overflowing trash can and general sloppiness. I know it's been a tough time for the hospitality industry.
