This 24/7 Town Topic location is a life saver truly. A plate of hashbrowns and the immaculately buttered toast resurrected me from a major hangover enough that I made it through the entire Nutcracker at the Kauffman without falling asleep. A miracle. The haystack sandwich is definitely high on my KC breakfast sandwich list -- any sandwich served on Texas toast is a winner, and hash browns on the sandwich is a game changer. The burgers are also perfectly greasy and delicious any time of day. For breakfast you order inside and squeeze into the like 10 seats in there. For most of the rest of the day, you order at the window and stand outside. If it's too busy inside, you can always order take out and eat on the curb because it's impossible to resist eating immediately. And you have to order a slice of pie - you have to. There's a shockingly large amount of parking in their lot but it can get full at night when the line is long, so you might have to find street parking. You must try Town Topic. It's a KC institution. Word on the street is that Town Topic is a KC classic and has been around since 1937, so I had to try it out. It's a very small little historic-feeling restaurant with only a few bar seats on the inside. They have standard options for a burger place. I got a double cheeseburger, which they added pickles and onions to. The patties were very flat, so the double cheeseburger actually looked more like a single cheeseburger. Also the lack of many things inside the burger plus the plain buns left me wanting more from the burger. It was slightly burned but still decent. The staff are friendly and attentive. Because of the small interior of the restaurant, seating can be hard to come by and it can feel quite cramped when many people are in there eating or ordering. Overall, Town Topic is a unique dining experience, but it might be a sort of one-and-done kind of experience. This restaurant is awesome! I got the Double Cheeseburger with my Dad with a side of Fries, a Chocolate shake and a slice of cake. All of these things were awesome, including the fries (I'm not always a fan of fries, so that says something). The service was also incredible. The people were very friendly and polite and made the meal even more enjoyable! Add in the great atmosphere of the restaurant and you have an absolutely amazing dining experience! We phoned Town Topic at 6:00AM and placed a huge order for pickup. Got to our tailgate and popped the truck, cracked a cold beverage and dug into the delicious smelling bag of breakfasts. Town Topic has been a bit of a cultural touchstone for my entire life. I remember riding with my mother as a child to drop my father off at his overnight job at the Union Station during the early '70's. The Town Topic neon lights glowed as we progressed down Broadway and seemed to illuminate a magical big city diner that I always wanted to stop at, but never was allowed to as a child. Flash forward another decade and as a young adult living in midtown I was able to experience Town Topic on my own terms - usually late at night after drinking at now non-existent watering holes such as The Tuba, The Auditorium, The Ship (original location), Davey's Uptown or Kenny's News Room. It was splendid and it was mine! Fellow class mate and recording artist Jeff Black penned a song in the 80's before moving to Nashville entitled "Town Topic Tonight"; the refrain that always stayed in my head when out partying. I even bought a framed and matted b/w photo of a topless women standing at the phone booth in front of the joint, that hung in my home for years. I wandered in this past Tuesday for lunch after an almost decade long self imposed exile for no apparent reason and the memories immediately returned as you can see from my first paragraph. The double cheeseburger smashed flat on the grill with a heap of onions seared into the patty is delectable and is why Town Topic still appears on lists of best burgers in America regularly. In it's 85 year history Town Topic has delivered consistently an American standard that has risen to iconic status. May Town Topic continue to inspire songs, art, and memories and be there to sop up late night excesses for another century. read more

Super cute tiny burger dive!!! The place couldn't have been more than 6 feet deep from the door to the counter. There were 11 stools and nothing else. Came here for breakfast since it's only a nine minute walk from the convention center where I was working for the day. Homemade chili at 9pm hit the spot! Employees were great. On it, helpful and kind. They've been open since the 1930s. That alone made me want to come and experience the magic. It seems like a great place to see some Kansas City history - it's a relatively short distance from Union Station and I could just see people finding their way to this roadside diner after coming in on a train for a burger, shake and fries. Grabbed dinner at Town Topic on a Wednesday night. It feels like this place is consistently busy - it doesn't matter the time or day, but things move quickly. We had a group of 10, and there definitely wasn't space inside for all of us. It was beautiful out, so we ordered our food and waited and ate outside. We got a double cheeseburger, tater tots, and a blt. I would order the cheeseburger and tots again in a heartbeat. The food was far less greasy than I expected it to be. I would not order the blt - I feel like the bread was too toasted and dry, but it did have a LOT of bacon on it. read more
