Decided to have nice night out. Didn't know I would receive a 2 for 1. The service was awesome and lively (at the daiquiri and wing spot). The ambiance is nice the cover change was $5.00 atm and there is an outside patio area to sit. The music was Banging! and the drinks are flavorful to many options to count. Only drink 1 (2 if you live close by) lol. Can't wait to enjoy the vibe again! Parking was easy to find

Deliciousness! Fried fish, whole garlic parm wings, and tots. Plus the Nashville hot sauce on the side.

Good on point! Really hit the spot for some casual dining of friend food. Had the fried fish and it measures up. Husband had the garlic parm whole wings and they too were great! We will return and the service was fast. And don't forget to ask for some of the Nashville hot sauce-delicious!

We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked through the door. Our order was taken immediately, I love how short & simple the menu is while still adding their own unique touches to certain burgers. They also serve chicken, fish, and tacos. My food was amazing. The burger was much more than expected and worth the $8, with the side of fries for $2 were beer battered. I went and got a daiquiri next door at Velvet freeze next door, because they are two businesses combined into one. I'm glad we came early because the line was almost out the door in the rain by 7 p.m. I definitely see why, I don't hand out 5 stars often, but when I do you can bet your tastebuds it's worth it!

Just a few doors up from 18th Street on Vine is Smaxx. A small diner serving grilled and fried foods. It contains about 8 or so booths and displays photos and framed articles and advertisements of KC history on the walls. I ordered the Bacon Onion Burger with rings. The rings were pretty basic mass produced frozen fare, but the burger was outstanding. A very large patty seasoned and grilled, with tons of fried onions, bacon, lettuce, pickle, and tomato. Very friendly service and local owned in KC's most historic neighborhood. Plenty of reasons to pay Smaxx a visit.

This was my second time visiting Smaxx. This time I got the "Fried Fish Basket". Let me say I was not disappointed and I had enough to share with the office. It was fried to absolute perfection and it was cooked fresh while I was there. This will definitely be my go to when I visit Samxx.

The KC burger is everything that it's cracked up to be, and more. Seriously great burger without any sauce. The onion ring is a really good addition. Fries are fresh and seasoned well. Gotta go back and try more!

Looking for a great authentic burger. The KC Burger was excellent. Visiting from California and meet the owners of Smaxx and The Velvet Freeze Daiquiri. They were very friendly and stopped to make sure we were okay and talked to our family about the history. If you are visiting the historical 18th & Vine make sure to grab a bite at Smaxx and visit the Velvet Freeze Daiquiri next door for a refreshing treat. Ambience is great and music is awesome! Wishing much success. California visitor

Wanted to be sure to try this spot since we missed the chance last time and it did NOT disappoint. We ordered wings, a burger and a philly. Wings: on point. Cooked well and seasoned well. Came with fries, not many in our party liked the fries but we did have to drive them back to our hotel (20 mins) so that could have been a factor. Also, HEADS UP when you order wings you have to order ranch ( 18 wings ordered and we had to pay extra for ranch¿ ) Burger and Philly: both were seasoned well and very good. Only thing missing...(again)...CONDIMENTS no mayo, mustard special sauce anything. BUT obviously the food was GOOD because we still ate it and enjoyed it. I just prefer my sandwiches UN-DRY

Portia's Cafe (Feb 14, 2023)…read more Portiia's Cafe was not a planned visit while visiting Kansas City. It was my last day in Kansas City, and I was planning to hit the American Jazz Museum before flying back to Seattle late afternoon. As the airbnb area where I was staying did not have any fast food around, I had to decide on a breakfast place before the American Jazz Museum opened at 10 a.m. As I was traveling cheaply using public transportation, the 2 closest places to the Jazz Museum that's easily accessible and within walking distance to the museum were either Portia's Cafe or McDonald's. Bring a fan of diners, Portia's it was. It was drizzling that morning, and Portia's was a slight walk from the bus stop. Dragging my wet luggage into the Cafe, I was cheerfully greeted at the entrance and took my seat not too far from it. The waitress recommended some of the food and I sat down to observe life in the cafe. The place is old but very comfortable. A different area ( I sat near the counter in a booth) had many pictures and posters on the walls, and provided history of the restaurant, and more. The food came - a solid omelet with melted cheese and meats, a nice portion of hash browns, a fresh squeezed glass of orange juice and a cup of eye-opening coffee. It was on the greasy side, but that was exactly what I wanted as I intended to skip lunch before the late afternoon flight. The restaurant environment was lively, with many long term customers coming and going exchanging Valentine's Day greetings. Feels like "Cheers" in the day time - "You wanna go where everybody knows your name." After finishing my meal, I visited the other area of the restaurant to look at the pictures and posters. The younger waitress there told me stories of some of the pictures. I actually met Portia as well, the proprietor of the restaurant. So cool! Please have fun by visiting the place and enjoy some home style cooking. Shout out to the young waitress there who showed me around the photos and posters. I promised I shall write a glowing review, and here it is. Happy Eating !!!

We came from the airport because our flight was late (big shock). The area nearby was quiet in a slightly deserted way for Thursday. There is an upstairs and downstairs, connected to a Vine Street Chicken place. One could drink/eat upstairs but the Bingo was downstairs. It was quiet for a Thursday, only 9 or 8 tables playing. We sat with our flight and listened to the numbers and patterns. We didn't win anything but it was fun. I got samples of East 71 (Cream Ale); Worth the Climb (Pilsner); Jazzman (Dark Lager) and Hood Saison. I got a full pint of the Jazzman as well. The only food they serve is VIne Street chicken, so we ordered that after the game; we wanted to eat downstairs so my party picked it up and brought it downstairs. There was eventually a bartender downstairs as well. One not great thing was that when we arrived at 7 or so, (we parked nearby) the bar downstairs was not open, so we had to order upstairs and BRING the flight downstairs. No elevator! It was interesting taking a paddle of 4 small glasses of beer down a flight of stairs. I guess after 2 flights we did not want to wait til after Bingo to get beer. The food was very good, the chicken and mac/cheese was great, but the only sauce I liked was the peach Bourbon. Yum! Both bartenders were friendly and helpful, and there were board games and sofas for cool nights, and a nice outdoor patio for sitting outside. There was a cooler of cans to take home, but since we were flying it was best not to risk it. I'd go back later if I return to KC, esp to get a few cans to drink in my room instead of paying stadium prices!

They have a lot of different cocktails but no gin ones? Thought this was weird. The beer isn't listed on a menu. You have to go look at the wall behind the bar. Maybe the beers are all rotating? I wasn't sure. The food was the unfortunate downfall. I got the fish and chips. The fries were fine but the fish was a... shape. As in it was for sure frozen and flavorless. I think maybe just skip serving stuff like this and do more of a beer hall thing. I'm sure they're trying to appeal to a lot of people but because it's very much a bar vibe maybe just stick to burgers and wings? I'm also wondering if it just wasn't my vibe.
