My wings were deep fried to perfection and covered in buffalo sauce. Thankfully I ordered a coupe containers of ranch to dip with. (Fries and other sides are sold separately.) If wings aren't your thing there are plenty of other options - burgers, cheesesteaks and more. I haven't tried them, but if they're as good as the wings then you'll leave happy. We were warmly greeted as soon as we walked through the door. Our order was taken immediately, I love how short & simple the menu is while still adding their own unique touches to certain burgers. They also serve chicken, fish, and tacos. My food was amazing. The burger was much more than expected and worth the $8, with the side of fries for $2 were beer battered. I went and got a daiquiri next door at Velvet freeze next door, because they are two businesses combined into one. It contains about 8 or so booths and displays photos and framed articles and advertisements of KC history on the walls. I ordered the Bacon Onion Burger with rings. The rings were pretty basic mass produced frozen fare, but the burger was outstanding. A very large patty seasoned and grilled, with tons of fried onions, bacon, lettuce, pickle, and tomato. Very friendly service and local owned in KC's most historic neighborhood. Plenty of reasons to pay Smaxx a visit. read more

Okay, so I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak and it was good. Not the best but still tasty and satisfying. The price was also really good. Solid score for food. However, service was not good. Walking in there was no greeting. Standing at the front, the cashier didn't say, "I'm ready when you are," nothing. She looked agitated. When I asked if she was ready for my order, since she kept talking to people in the back, she got an attitude. I had been standing there for about 2-3 minutes . once my order was ready, which was fairly quickly and I appreciated that, I asked for plastic utensils and she became upset because she had to go look for it. I went around 12:45 in the afternoon so they weren't open long enough for her to already be in a foul mood. If service improves then I'd be happy to frequent this spot. read more

I read a lot of the reviews prior to going and was worried about the poor customer service. I tend to chalk that up just because sometimes customers themselves can be extra. With that being said, the reviews were accurate from that standpoint. There's one lady taking the orders and another cooking. The cook, is such a sweetheart. She was in the kitchen by herself, doing what she needed, to make it work. Orders being yelled across and she did her thing. Never rattled. She is the reason for three stars and not two. The lady taking the orders could have been a little more friendly, specifically with the people who had been waiting 30+mins for their food. The food- the chicken was ok. I wish I had gotten a variety of flats and drums but I was given all drums. All 12 pieces. The fries were awesome. Nice crisp and good seasoning. The basa was good too. It's connected to Velvet Freeze, a frozen daiquiri shop which is a nice add, and the music selection was on point. The staff was friendly and attentive, the food was plentiful and delicious (I got the Missed Breakfast burger and fries), and I enjoyed the historical pictures and newspaper articles on the walls. I was in the area on completed work business and was really looking for something good to eat in the historic 18th and vine District. I've never eaten in this district before and because it's a historically black area I was really looking forward to partaking of some food. But I guess being of African-American descent and knowing that a lot of businesses that are run by African-Americans do have issues of not keeping up with other Competitive businesses I should have known that I was going to leave very disappointed. From the moment I walked in, there were several people sitting at their tables and I noticed that none of them were eating. When I came up to the counter the elderly cashier woman automatically looked at me and said " do you have a call in order?" I said "no". And she immediately said "well you might as well leave because it's gonna be a 30 minute wait at least we got all these people waiting and they get served before you". Now I understand when establishments are busy, I understand that things can get backed up but when you specifically tell a customer to leave instead of Trying to do everything you can to accommodate them is financial suicide and in all honesty I can't see this business lasting very long if they treat customers like this. I've seen the reviews. I've seen that their food is good, but I never get to taste it then how can I agree? If I never got to taste it, then it is out of sight out of mind to me and this just seals my feelings on taking my business out of the black community somewhere else. Food only review 5 star. Had the KC Burger first time here which combines hamburger with bbq adding that brisket and sauce. Plenty of additional sauces available . This seems like a family owned and run business with a few employees but the cook knows what she's doing creating a great burger with all its layers and flavors. The fries were my idea of perfect with the crunchiness and taste unlike some greasy ones at other places. Be aware this is a self serve, you order and pay they give you a empty cup and your in your own. If you are looking for a server every few minutes this isn't the place. This is not a knock on them just real, this is what it is. I had no problem with that. I got my soda sat down, got up for some napkins and ketchup, then threw my trash away. If the other food is made with this much attention you cannot pass this up. Their food is Excellent! I am particularly fond of their brisket fries! It is enormously satisfying and taste so good. The reason for the 3 *'s is simply the inconsistent pricing. (Long Story, Long) Today was no exception, previously I have walked in to order and the price on the menu is $8 which is phenomenal! However I was charged $9+ tax, when I brought up the price difference I was told the price is $9 & the menu needs to be updated. With little push-back the menu price was honored. My next visit the same issue, I brought up the price difference (menu still wasn't updated) and the price was NOT honored. Fine. $9 still isn't bad, it's a lot of food. Today I called in my order and just knew the price was $9 bc, previous visits and that's what I was told over the phone, $9. I get to the window and my total is $10.84. Curious I ask, "almost $2 tax?" And was told that's just what the computer says the price is. MA'AM YALL TOLD ME $9 ON THE PHONE? Bottom line I would be willing to pay about $12 for that item bc it is so good and it is a lot of food.
