It was very salty. But the infuriating part was that even though I ordered two, they just split the portions of one into two boxes. It's not the first time they've done it here, completely unprofessional even if they're trying to save money. Ambiance is nonexistent. It's not really a friendly sit down place, tables and seats are dirty. Might be good for takeout, but there's definitely improvement to be made. Do not come here if you value your health or if you want good service. They do not prioritize sanitary measures. There is a horrific amount of cross contamination with their rolls and menu items. Toya is a small Japanese food place with an order-at-the-door concept and few self-service tables outdoors, if you choose to eat there. Parking is not usually easy, and the wait is usually long. The place looks very fast food-y, but nothing about Toya is fast. When you order at the window, your wait can still be 30+ mins, even when they aren't busy. It can be frustrating to come here when you're hungry. Where Toya shines is in 2 areas: service (the staff have always been accommodating and friendly!) and drinks. Their boba drinks are delicious and many include 2 toppings! You can customize most things, except ice level. We ordered 3 rolls, and the person who ate the roll with raw fish was sick the rest of the night. The other 2 who ate non-fish rolls (like California roll) were fine and enjoyed their food. In summary, here are my tips: - Take advantage of their online ordering! - Get a drink and stick to non-raw fish dishes, unless you have a strong stomach, then go for it. - Park on the street because the small lot next to the restaurant can be hard to get out since many people illegally park in non-parking spots there. read more

This place is very inconsistent with their sushi rolls. Gave them a couple chances but they really miss the mark. I got the nutty shrimp roll and the first time the rice was on the outside and barely any tempura shrimp. The second time the nori was on the outside but they put so much tobiko (roe) that it literally tasted like salty fish. I'd say it was a spoonful of it, too excessive. I told them and showed them, even explaining I wasn't even able to take some of it off to eat the roll and their response was, sorry about that! Didn't care about their bad sushi and didn't even want to make an edible roll. So I wasted the money and got no food. The guy tried to tell me that's how they do the roll but I had been here before so I knew he was making that up. Terrible customer service, no consistency and no idea how to do a simple sushi roll. During my undergraduate, I came here at least 1-2 times a week, since the pandemic (3 years ago), up until last year. In my opinion, it's one of the best and most affordable boba places in Santa Cruz. The staff is always kind and welcoming, and the wait is never long. The menu is limited but most drinks come with 1-2 free toppings. They have a parking lot, and there's also street parking nearby. Food/Drink: Tekka Maki (7.5/10): A basic roll with only tuna. A majority of the times that I've gotten it the fish has been fresh. However, there have been 2-3 times where it's fishy and has an odd texture. The portion size is good for the price, and the rice is always fresh. Combo A - Fried Chicken (10/10): This combo is a deal! The portion of the rice is huge and comes with a good amount of fried chicken. The chicken is crispy and well-seasoned. Strawberry Pearl Matcha Latte (8/10): The matcha taste isn't very strong, so if that's what you're looking for, this is not it. I think the matcha and strawberry jam balance well, but there are times when they add too much jam, making it overly sweet. Fruit Tea - Green Tea (8/10): I've had several fruit teas here, including the mango, strawberry (my personal favorite), strawberry lychee, and honeydew lychee (my least favorite). I always get it half-sweet, and it's the perfect balance. Otherwise, it's way too sweet. It comes with two free toppings which is nice. Especially the one from the guy complaining about them using paper straws for the bobba, I mean come on this is Santa Cruz we shouldn't have any plastic straws. Came here first time when we were coming back from High Way One. And since then it's been our go to spot in Santa Cruz. Love the food and the staff is always friendly. We always get their Jumbo roll and it's always delicious. The boba was also great. You definitely get your money's worth for the amount of edamame they serve at least, but it's was just eh for me. Everything was SO bad I drive past this place every day and decided to take my boba-loving daughter there after school. We ordered one boba, some fried chicken and a crunchy roll. I was looking for a place to get Japanese food near highway one and this came up as the first option. There is no indoor seating, takeout window for all food. The wait time was quick! Less than 10 minutes. Which was great until I started to eat and realized the food was super low quality. I ordered a meal combination with sashimi and my girlfriend ordered a king salmon roll. Within minutes of consuming she threw up the food. This was the only meal we had in the past 2-4 hrs that day so it had to be the food. The salmon was almost too pink and felt extremely dry. I had extreme stomach pain and lots of grumbling indigestion etc. don't go to a place like this. Serving food that makes you feel bad is a no-go for dining out. Toya Sushi brings a huge breath of fresh air to the lackluster Asian food scene here in Santa Cruz. For a town with plenty of international students from Asia, it's shocking that there aren't more quality options. This is our answer for affordable, great Japanese comfort food. My roommate and I placed an online order that was ready in 20 minutes for pickup during SIP. I ordered their Combo A deal ($14) where you get to choose from a variety of hearty options including Tonkatsu and Kaarage-don. It also comes with a four-piece California Roll and four slices of Tuna Sashimi. That is such a deal! My Tonkatsu Curry order was what I'd expect to find in Mitsuwa or another Japanese-American market over the hill. It's not quite the same quality and thickness as you'd find in Japan, but for the American inspired style, it certainly hit the spot. Crunchy pieces of pork cutlet with a standard curry over Japanese rice- the combination can't be beat and the quality is very good at Toya. Without a doubt, they have the BEST boba in town. I ordered their Mango Matcha Latte ($5) and never looked back. Not only was it reasonably priced for matcha, but the quality of the tea and the boba was spot on and makes every other option in town pale in comparison. If you're looking for quality boba, you have to come here. I'm very happy that they've amped up the competition when it comes to good Asian cuisine in Santa Cruz. I hope they stick around long past this pandemic and continue to grow as a business. Parking is available on the street. They don't deliver but offer easy pickup. read more

Pandemic review Called in for pick up and was told the wait would be 15 mins. When we got there, there was a line. The food was ready by the promised time. Our hotel was less than 5 minutes away, but some of the food was cold by the time we got back. We ordered: -Hamachi (10pcs) 3/5 -side of rice -Combo B (fried chicken, edamame and gyoza) 3/5 -Monster Junior Roll 4/5 -Crunchy Roll 3/5 Our crunchy roll was really cold (supposed to be cooked) and my husband bit into what he thought was metal in the gyoza. I think it was actually mussel shells. That threw everything off. All in all, the food was good, but there were a couple of mishaps along the way. read more

This review is for the boba and drinks only. Mobile ordered which was convenient. They told me it'd be 40 minutes in the mid afternoon but it was only like 10 minutes so that's nice. Anyway parking is pretty small but so is the storefront. The milk tea was good and had a good tea flavor to it, the caramel coffee was okay.. but kinda tasted burnt, and the honeydew slushee was good! My recommendation is to get 50% sugar on all the drinks. I honestly cannot even imagine what they taste like at 100%-- especially the honeydew one! This cozy little spot is the kind of place where you order at the counter, grab a seat inside if you're lucky, or head out to the small front patio to enjoy your meal al fresco. There's parking, which is a win for those grabbing takeout. The sushi here is fresh, flavorful, and affordable -- though I couldn't help but notice that cashews seem to make a cameo in almost every dish. I didn't mind, though--they add a nice crunch. I used to really enjoy Toya. It was the go to grab and go place for the family. Unfortunately the last time I went all of my salmon and tuna in each of my rolls was frozen. It put me off of a sushi in general for a bit. Unexpectedly biting into frozen mushy fish is quite gross. This is my first time since then and the fish is not frozen but it does have a mushy texture and the seaweed salad is dry and old. Luckily there are plenty of sushi places in Santa Cruz, but it's unfortunate that I'll be saying good bye to Toya. read more

The staff is really helpful and friendly, and very clean and sanitary (the little things - like they sanitize and do not reuse the stylus' for signing your receipt). While in the area, my family and I wanted to try this sushi place out. We ordered a few dishes: salmon sashimi, Takara roll, Tropi maki roll, crunchy roll, pork cutlet curry, and their combination tempura. I am only going to review what I had eaten, although the only comment my family made was that the tempura could have been better (I don't eat tempura). You definitely get more bang for your buck here! Prices are reasonable. Much better quality than your Safeway sushi, but wouldn't consider this high end. They have a large variety of sushi to choose from. The flavors were good. My favorite roll was their maki roll. Their Takara roll, another favorite from Takara (before it closed), was also delicious. Because this restaurant is take out and I've had good experiences previously I didn't even think to examine the rolls. First off I was given the wrong roll.... I ordered the avo tuna (sashimi) and they gave me a regular roll. Which was extremely expensive for a regular roll... also tasted inedible. I am a fan of sashimi and sashimi grade poke/ raw sashimi grade fish. This experience was extremely disappointing. I don't know if I will ever come here again. The Thai tea was flavorless. Great for family dinning as you get to order either sushi or combination bento boxes plus some side of appetizers. Also good for solo dinning as you can order some food plus their boba teas. Speaking about boba, they are probably the best boba tea places in Santa Cruz as well. The classic milk tea tastes exactly the same as the milk teas that I had back in Taiwan (where boba teas originally came from). Have you ever tried good boba with good sushi? This place is just mmmmmmm soooo good. The Thai tea is good and the boba marks the difference between a good boba place and a bad boba place. The boba has a honey flavor and chewy when you are having your boba. The second boba was the mango slush and it was I can't say anything wrong, it's just good. It's got organic mango bits, and with good boba and good mango taste, just satisfying. When you come to Toya sushi, you can eat outside or you can eat in the parking lot where they have tables. The customer service is really good and the cups are so cute! I've tried many boba places, but I've never been super satisfied, but I am satisfied. You won't be disappointed when you come got boba. They really know their stuff and execute during game time. I tried the chicken, tempura, and fried calamari. It's good and the taste is good with the monster sauce. Do ask when you order. - Pork Cutlet Curry Bowl - unagi bowl (eel rice bowl) - California roll - tuna roll (the one with green onions and avocado) I don't have any photos because I usually DEVOUR everything after ordering. The boba is kind of too sweet for me even if I put it at 50% but honestly....I'm not too picky. Boba is also hit or miss. Sometimes it's chewy and sometimes it feels not cooked enough, but it's rarreeelllyyy like that. I'm still going to order the boba. Pork curry bowl: There's so much in this!!! Like holy cow I could not finish it in one sitting. I don't know if it was a mistake but I had so much pork...like so much. I'm not complaining tho. It was good!! Unagi bowl: Urgh i love unagi. But this eel had so many bones in it. Flavor great! But would I order it again? Probably not because there were just so many bowls. i do want to preface that my experience solely comes from delivery orders, so i can't say much about the service or ambiance. i've only had their katsu in both the bowl form and combo form. i recommend the combo over the bowl, bc instead of the vegetables that i thought would come in the bowl, you only get 2 large florets of blanched broccoli. the combo itself isn't bad-- you get potstickers with it along with some edamame (. the curry sauce made the top part of my katsu soggy, but on the other side, you can see a nice flaky/crispy texture going on. drinks here are a hit or miss. im not a huge fan of the creama drinks, but the milk and fruit teas are good. i've seen some bad reviews, but the boba consistency has been okay for me so far, and the paper straw works just fine :) read more
