Wifey and I decided to try a new-to-us place in Santa Cruz for a nice Easter meal. We arrived just as they opened, and we were immediately greeted with a friendly smile and welcomed to come in and sit anywhere we liked. The music was on point, and the vibe was super chill. My wife is vegan , and I am pescatarian, and let me say - the menu was abundant with options for both! While we wanted to try everything, we knew we had to pick a few items and save options to try for our next visit. The food was phenomenal! It was clear the chef took his time to craft each roll with texture, flavor, and presentation, all with equal importance. Octavio was our server, and he was attentive, hospitable, and knowledgeable, and even weighed in on helping us make decisions for what to order. The slight Dragon Ball Z theme was awesome as a fan of the series. They had a couple small figurines from DBZ and had some menu items named after things from DBZ. There was a large square central table that had multiple groups of people able to sit there or could accommodate one larger party. After that it was a few tables with 2 seats each. There are also a couple tables outside. ***Side note for people with small children: they do not have high chairs. Pricing was reasonable as compared to other sushi restaurants, and the menu at the Buzz sounded the most interesting (to me). And I did enjoy the uniqueness of their menu. The Android 18 Roll had a stronger lemon taste than I was expecting. It was a little too much lemon for my liking, but my wife found it very refreshing. The Twin Salmon Roll had some nice crunch with the nuts in it which gave it good texture. I think from both rolls I wanted a bit more depth of flavor. The menu made everything seem like there was so much going on, and the flavor wasn't bad at all, I think I just had higher expectations based on how interesting the menu sounded. It's a hole in the wall, that seats maybe 20 people total, so it's fairly quiet, and you're probably always going to get good service like I did. The sushi was really good. Definitely up to par for someone who is only a casual sushi guy like me. Not sure how connoisseurs would feel. The rolls did seem a little small for the price. It's about $17 for 8 rolls. They serve them in 2 rows of 4 rather than 1 row of 8 which may have made them seem smaller. Overall, great place. Would go again. read more

Being Hapa (Japanese and Spanish) and being allergic to monosodium glutamate has to be the biggest oxymoron! I was so ecstatic as I found out all the sauces at this particular restaurant are made vegan and gluten-free, and do not contain any monosodium glutamate/MSG!! Each sauce had a unique flavor and texture!! I really liked the mango habanero sauce as well as the Yuzu citrus sauce, and there was another sauce we had, but I can't remember the unique name! But each roll had a unique sauce that was very complementary of the fish as well as the other ingredients within the roll itself! We loved all three of the dishes we got, and there was a larger party that came in after us sitting at that great table in the middle of the room, the one server was able to get all of our orders as well as another party seated at the window section in a timely matter! I'm not too sure how many chefs were in the back, but we got our food in a reasonable amount of time as well! I honestly loved all their plants and decor, there was something to look at, and it was very personable and had a warm home like feeling in the restaurant itself! Our top two favorites were the Caribbean Roll and the Santa Cruz Roll--both were standout and full of flavor. We also loved their salad--it had just the right amount of dressing, nice and saucy exactly how we like it. Service was great and very attentive, which made the experience even better. We also noticed they offer a happy hour menu, which is always a plus. The restaurant itself was very clean and well kept, usually a great sign of how the rest of the operation is run. I can't speak to the ambiance of the restaurant itself, because I tried this at the Santa Cruz vegfest. However, I'll tell you the things I did like. The people who work there seem nice and knowledgeable. I like that the menu has vegan options. I like that you get an edible flour with your roll. And I like that they have vegan ice cream. I do wonder about cross-contamination at their restaurant and if they have separate workstations for fish versus vegan items. read more
