I bought a very big ring, for the love of my life from your store. This would not be happening had we not had Stella D'Orazio work with us. It was pure chance, but it mattered to us in a big way. It had to be: right ring, right price, right sales person, right day, and then some magical grace sprinkled in. My girl friend and her family are very schooled at buying jewelry. They are fussy. My family doesn't buy jewelry, so this was all about her. And she was nervous. She was going to have her family jeweler to make our ring. I encouraged her to stop in a few places with me just so see what we would see. We stopped at four places before we came to Trabert & Hoeffer and I said to Les, "Let's stop in here. Remember, we are not looking for a ring; a ring is looking for us!!!" And there it was. But the bottom-line is this: if Stella D'Orazio had not been our guide and ring-therapist, WE would not be getting this ring. We loved her. She was kind, gracious, direct, informed, and SHE LISTENED. I had a terrible experience at Trabert & Hoeffer. My husband bought my engagement ring there in 2013, and it is lovely. It has now been 5 years, and it needs a lot of repairs. Last year, it was so warped that I couldnt get it on my finger. They charged my $185 to get it resized. This year, I could tell that the prongs were loose. It was catching on my clothes, and the diamond felt loose. I went in and dropped it off in order to get an estimate, and they called me back and told me it would cost $550. I was shocked, not only that the repairs would be so extensive in only 5 years, but that they would not stand by the quality of their work and cover the repairs. They looked at me in bafflement when I questioned why they wouldnt cover the repairs as basic maintenance, and Estelle actually laughed out loud at me. When I eventually took my ring to Denise Ferro at Windy City Diamonds, she told me that she could fix it for $180, and was also shocked that the made the ring so poorly, and then wouldnt stand by their work. I have split prongs on my ring, and she informed me that they werent even technically split prongs, but were single prongs that had been cut to look like split prongs. Do not shop here. Some of the workers are nice, but most, especially Estelle, are rude and treat customers badly. The work is not high quality, and they charge extensive amounts for repairs that occur from basic wear and tear. I was extremely disappointed in this store, and will never be returning. I got my favorite piece of jewelry ever from there & they were amazing. I saw a bracelet in a different color gold & my boyfriend called them later and special ordered in rose gold for me. It is beautiful & I get compliments weekly on it. It is stunning, today I saw after 50 years they are closing and I actually cried. This store has been a highlight of visiting Chicago over the last 7 years for us. We will dearly miss it, no matter the weather we stop and look and listen to their stunning windows. I am a new resident in Chicago and needed to find a jewelry store that offered jewelry repair; Trabert and Hoeffer's website indicates they provide "fine jewelry repair". I took in a necklace with a very fine platinum chain that had a tangle---I explained the necklace was a gift from my father, very delicate (an heirloom piece dating to 1915) and that I needed the knot removed. The woman who was helping me proceeded to take a paperclip out of the desk drawer and unbent it ---she stated the paperclip was clearly too big to work. She told me she needed to take it into the back to use proper tools. When she returned she said she couldn't fix it because the chain was too fine and that I needed to go somewhere where there was "a jeweler." I stated I thought they were "a jeweler"---apparently not. She recommended that I go down the street to another jeweler, Lester Lampert. Lester Lampert used the professional tools to remove the knot without damaging my necklace and Elena who provided superb service was a certified jeweler/gemologist. I would minimally expect that Trabert and Hoeffer instruct their sales staff that if they are not qualified to repair fine jewelry that they inform the customer up front. read more

He worked with Trabert and Hoeffer to get a very unique and contemporary setting (they were the only jeweler in the city who carried one of my favorite designers, Michael Bondanza) and a diamond that matched the style of the setting. I bought a diamond ring at Trabert and Hoeffer and after a few months the diamonds fell out and the platinum band warped. I was very disappointed and to make matters worse the owner Don Levinson was rude and would not stand by his work! I will never shop at Trabert and Hoeffer and am telling everyone I know how bad there craftsmanship is. I never in my wildest dreams would I think a $15,000 ring would be so poorly made and to make matters worse Don Levinson would not back up his work. He wanted to charge me another $15,0000 for a new setting when I did not even have this one for an entire year. I didn't even wear the ring every day. STAY AWAY FROM THIS ESTABLISHMENT! Although I am partial to a fine jewelry sales associate at another location, I really wish she worked here, because Don Levinson (the owner) is the best! I just purchased a custom engagement ring from Trabert & Hoeffer. I cannot recommend them enough! I shopped extensively in Chicago including most of jewelers row. Trabert was far and away the most friendly and accommodating store and staff. I worked with Katie Hammond and their in house designer and they helped me create exactly what i was looking for. They created computer renderings in CAD based on my drawings. The store front can be a bit intimidating but give them a try. I would recommend shopping around online and around town to find the style you are looking for, but be sure to visit Trabert before you make any decisions! As far as pricing, they are fair and honest. They give one price(vs jewelers row where its like bargaining with street venders), if that price doesnt work they will find a similar stone that will work. They have a wonderful attitude and are willing to help you work within your budget. It is well worth a few extra bucks for a place that you can be proud of, and would want take your wife (or future wife) too. Phenomenal! read more

My fiance and I needed some adjustments made to her engagement ring and we were treated like family even though this was the first time visiting Trabert & Hoeffer. I just bought a new Daytona and I needed to get it sized. Even though I did not buy it from Trabert, I called there because I had bought my last watch from Trabert and I really trusted them. Rosemary answered the phone and after I explained my situation, she offered to size the watch for me. I ran over to their store immediately and she helped me right away. Her knowledge of watches was truly amazing. What a resource! She was helpful, courteous, knowledgable and terrific to speak with. I cannot say enough good things about her and in turn, about T&H. I would certainly buy my next watch from T&H and from Rosemary, in particular. I do not remember the last time I spoke to someone so knowledgable about watches. She knew the ins and outs, the why these were designed this way, the designers themselves, etc. It was like going to a watch museum. I loved every minute of it.
