We had an errand to run in Alexandria, so we stopped by this Trader Joe's even though our usual one is in Bailey's. This one is like a lovely hidden gem; just outside of the heart of Old Town. The layout is a little different, but everything is clean. At first we were cringing when we heard 'parking validation' because sometimes that can be pulling teeth, but they have the validation machine just outside the main doors, making it incredibly convenient. read more

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my taste buds can reach after drinking marvelous wine (at an incredibly reasonable price.) OK, so it's small. But I say a little Trader Joe's is so much better than no Trader Joe's at all. Like everyone else on the planet, I am much busier than I would like to be. As one who lives and works in close proximity of Old Town, I don't have the luxury of making it out to Bailey's Crossroads, um, ever. I love Trader Joe's in general and give this location 5 stars for the selection. The 4 star rating is due to parking challenges (in the garage, especially on Sundays) and the mixed attitudes I get from staff at this location. I have found the best time to go (for parking and for general crowd avoidance) is on Tuesday evenings. Some of the staff here are fantastic - friendly, helpful, the general fun folks hired at Trader Joe's. Others seem to have an attitude - they don't care if they are blocking the already narrow aisles or stocking the area you are trying to shop. They just ignore you and keep on with their business. Yes, this location is small. Perhaps the smallest Trader Joe's in the country. But I can ride my bike here in under five minutes. Am I really going out to Bailey's Crossroads? Nope. Am I going to keep sampling wines on Fridays and buying more food novelties than I ever mean to, even while I grimace because some of my favorite products are out of stock? Absolutely. Because I am addicted. We're thinking about moving to SF in a couple of years, and I have asked friends to help me pick neighborhoods to live in based on their proximity to a Trader Joe's. Life is far, far sweeter because of the following items: Trader Joe's Organic Milk Organic Shredded Mozzarella Cheese Salem Crumbled Blue Cheese Mandarin Orange Chicken (a guilty pleasure) Tarte D'Alsace Peppercorn Crusted Pork Loin Organic Tomato Basil Sauce Buffalo Burgers I could continue, but then you'd be reading my grocery list, and I'm a girl who likes her privacy :) The selection of cheeses is fine in a bind or for everyday snacking, but pales in comparison to the show at Whole Foods. But the dried fruits, the sometimes quirky desserts, and the abundant selection of prepared party foods and snacks have all helped me throw a bash from time to time. I heart you, Trader Joe's. No-ten fuck! Trader Joe's has got me hooked--again. I swore I wouldn't let this happen again, but his low prices, amazing selection, and all natural ingredients just proved far too tempting. Now that I've started to cook again, he and I are on a first name basis now. Along with his Chinese cousin, Italian cousin, Spanish cousin, and all his other cousins who make delicious and natural alternatives to the kind of crap you find at mainstream supermarkets. Seriously, you can find pizza dough here for $0.99. Skip that frozen pizza you find at the supermarkets and just make your own pizza and top the shit out of it with all kinds of meats and veggies till the dough is falling back on itself. stabilize. Then pile even more on it. repeat. Oh, and the juice selection is fucking unbelievable. Just about every kind of 100% juice out there made out of every fruit out there. Their wine selection is above average, and they do offer wine samples. Oh, and their sesame sticks are fucking addictive. Buy several bags, because your housemates will eat through them. Parking garage connected to the TJ's. 2 hour parking with validation-- but the garage attendant doesn't really even check the ticket, he sort of just assumes that you went to TJ's. Not the largest TJ's I've been to, but still the selection is more than sufficient for someone like me. read more

One thing to love about Trader Joe's is the price. Pretty much everything (aside from prepared gourmet items which are expensive no matter where you go) I buy there is under $4. Actually most items I buy are $2 and under. Awesome possum! That is my main reason for going there. I can get the same items I might otherwise get at Safeway or Wholefoods for WAY cheaper. That being said, you need to go to TJ's planning to eat produce, cheeses and meats within a day or two of buying them. Although the price is right, the shelf life of perishable items is VERY short. I can't figure out why. I once bought a cucumber from TJ's that went bad in two days. Cucumbers that I buy at the farmers market last at least four. Also take note that TJ's won't have everything on your list. It's a small market, not a mega grocery store, so instead of having 20 brands of cereal, they have 10. And I think produce changes depending on the season, so if you're looking for avocados in November, they might not have them. If you want good, cheap wine, TJ's is a great option. The wine selection at this particular branch is fantastic; all kinds at very reasonable prices, as well as those with higher price tags. So rule of thumb: eat perishable items fast. It's not likely a one stop shop. Buy wine in bulk. Oh and you can grind your own coffee for cheap--yum! read more

This is my absolute favorite Trader Joe's in the D.C. Area. It is large and carries plenty variations of wines, fresh produce, bakery, dairy, and frozen selection. Always have samples of new items, wine, and cheeses. The parking lot is tight, but I always found a space, even during the holiday rush time. Plus, parking is validated. This location has wonderful selection of fresh flowers. Staff is courteous and always willing to answer any question and willing to help. Never had an issue to get credit for items that weren't to my liking. Be sure to get a tasting of hot coffee to enjoy while you shop. read more

Trader Joe's is one of my favorite grocery stores. Some of my favorite items include: -$1.19 pizza dough that comes in three flavors: regular, whole wheat, and garlic & herb. I won't make my own dough again. That's just silly! -Joseph Handler Sweet Red that goes for only $6 a pop -Indian food! Vacuum-sealed palak paneer (in pasta aisle) and frozen Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Vindaloo - very few preservatives and is restaurant quality -steamer clams in garlic butter sauce -- sop up juices with crusty bread! -Thai chili & lime cashews -Barbara's Bakery Shredded Oats cereal -0% French Vanilla Greek Frozen Yogurt (comparable to Pinkberry's original) -Ezekiel bread -Unburied Treasure White Cheddar Corn Puffs The store is clean and the employees are always helpful/chipper. The underground garage has ample parking. Parking is validated by stamping your own card on the way out. There is not one thing to dislike about this store or chain. read more

I typically don't review chains but due to the wealth of experience I have eating their frozen foods, I figured I should share my reviews. I hate Indian food in general except my mom's cooking, especially from restaurants because it's either greasy and gross or bland (Rasika is an exception obviously). On a whim, I bought their Lamb Vindaloo. Holy shit, it's delicious and was a little spicy too. My mom had their channa masala and said it was legit too. Now I eat indian food again. notable prepared foods: rigatoni with pork ragu, greek salad, thai noodle type salad, (in the refrigerated section by the salads) other delicious frozen foods: vegetable/shrimp gyoza (tastes so fresh, 10 times better than any chinese delivery place in alexandria), butter chicken, i'm blanking now but theres' only been one thing I got that wasn't good - don't get their linguine in clam sauce, very very bland. they messed that one up. Their vegetables are SO CHEAP. even the bagged ones. how do they do that? i don't understand their business model, their employees are so happy and nice so they must be compensated well. i always leave there happy, they are so accommodating. the negatives: wine is total shit but it's cheap. solid beer selection though. and they don't have some of the stuff i overindulge in at balducci's. no big deal though. read more

Absolutely love this place! I mean, I love all TJs that I've been to, but this one honestly takes the cake. I came here the first week I moved to the area. I didn't know where anything was, and just stumbled across this TJs to get some groceries. After a bit of trouble trying to locate the entrance (they have a bunch of doors, but majority of them are locked/emergency exits only), I finally got in. I was blown away by how helpful the workers are here. Not just about the products, but we asked about the local scene and got some honest answers from the locals of Old Town. My boyfriend and I are now on first name basis with a few of them and will sometimes just stop by to say hi if we're in the area. Everything here is competitively priced. And you know that everything you buy from TJs will be delicious. But if you're hesitant, feel free to sample something. They have samples out all the time, but if you want to try something they don't have out, ask someone. They'll open up a box/bag/whatever of it and give you a taste right there. There has never been anything here that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. Disclaimer: I've only ever tried their food products, not their beauty/health products, so I can't say anything about those. Despite the long lines, the cashiers are competent and good at their jobs. They are efficient without rushing you. They can hold a conversation while bagging your groceries and make it a great experience. They have free parking in the garage, as long as you get your card validated in the machine outside. I love Trader Joe's - it's not a big store, but they have products that you can't get anywhere else. I like their Indian sauces that all you need to do is add chicken breast to and viola! TJ's has the feel of an old timey country store. You'll not find everything here, but what you do find is of good quality. I like their frozen section. I've gotten frozen fish, pizza and dinners that are all above average. The check-out line features giant Swiss chocolate bars with hazelnuts that I LOVE but must now avoid. I stick to their great produce section and their prices are surprisingly competitive to the big stores. Their coffee is also quite good. I'm happy that this place is only a short walk from my office and its a way for me to avoid take-out in the area that gets quite expensive if you do it every day. I love Trader Joe's and this is a great location with free garage parking. I tend to go first thing in the morning and at lunchtime and have never had a wait. The staff is very responsive and every time they see me in one of the short lines, someone will always come up to a register and say, " I can take you here." Great place. If you love TJ's you'll love it here. On par with all of the TJ's I've been to in CT or VA. read more

When I used to work in Old Town, I would frequent this Trader Joe's location alot. Go in to pick up an item or two on my way home from work often resulted in me exiting with a cartload of goodies. Love this location because their WINE selection is VAST and hence, WONDERFUL! Parking validation is a relief when you don't have to worry about parking in Old Town. Staff is helpful and happy! I love Trader Joe's, period. I love it. But before I go any further: DO NOT GO TO THIS TRADER JOE'S ON A SUNDAY NIGHT. Freakin' yikes! The basics: as other reviewers write, there is an attached parking garage w/ free one-hour parking. Be sure to take your parking ticket inside w/ you; there is a validation stamper just to your right as you exit the main doors after cashing out. Notably, there is no longer a parking attendant; payment for the parking is automated. Like other Trader Joe's, it's small-ish (it used to be way smaller until they took over adjacent commercial space, which is now their wine/produce section). The best time to go, in my opinion (and this may be unrealistic for most): just after 9AM on a weekday morning. I try to avoid the local lunch crowd, the hurried-impatient after-work crowd, and the wild and giant-by-numbers "oh-my-God-it's-Sunday-and-I-need-frozen-meals-for-work" crowd. My midwest-dwelling parents are often astonished by the volume of business here, frequently comparing the number of customers to holiday-shopping crowds To be fair, most of us Trader Joe customers like to really look around at their different products, looking for new meals/ideas. So, this snail-paced browsing (which I'm totally guilty of) only makes getting through a small, popular store a little more difficult. As others say, the employees are really, really wonderful. It's clear that customer service is a priority for TJ. I've never been disappointed. Back to parking: if I don't have a lot of groceries, I do like to park on the street, where it's less hectic getting in/out. Also, I can walk here from my house. And if I have just one kid in our big-basket toting stroller, I like to walk. For you UppaBaby owners, this stroller works fine in the store, in lieu of a cart. Also, I've parked a double stroller outside, never once worrying whether it would be there when I returned. As for favorite Trader Joe products: 1) the mini-ice cream cones (my kids are crazy for these and they're the perfect size for little ones); 2) when seasonally available, I love the pumpkin bread mix; 3) always a fan of the sparkling juices/lemonades; 4) ohmygoodness, and have you tried the French orange blossom handwash? So lovely!; 5) the Indian frozen meals, including the naan bread, are the best (but, dammit, what happened to the frozen pekora?!); 6) frozen chicken strips are my favorite as compared to other store brands; 7) flowers are reasonably priced/lower than most places, but I find that the flowers don't last as long compared to, say, Whole Foods; 8) my husband and I are big fans of the Monkey Business trail mix; 9) I love their peach salsa; and 10) I'm thrilled they're now selling yogurt smoothies. I spend way to much time perusing the aisles looking for my next favorite item of the month. A large and fairly budget friendly selection of cheese and fun attempts at bringing frozen food to another level (Cha siu bao without the effort? This is a pretty good Trader Joe's. It's never super busy, even during prime grocery shopping hours (though I admit "super busy" is a relative term -- you don't know "super busy" unless you've been to the Trader Joe's in Union Square in New York). The best time to go seems like when they open at 8am. The thing I love about this particular Trader Joe's is that they always seem to have wine samples available. I don't think I've ever come here during the afternoon or evening and not have someone offer me some wine! How can you not love that? Contrary to some people's opinion (which is that Trader Joe's can do no wrong), I think their products are hit and miss. Definitely more hit than miss but they do have some products that are absolutely terrible. Their instant coffee is some of the worst instant coffee I've ever had. Also thought their soy nuggets were disgusting. I recently bought some of the Trader Joe's brand Hefeweizen and I thought that was a pretty poor Hefeweizen. I love all of their chocolate covered treats though and their frozen pizzas aren't bad. I really like their salsas and tortilla chips also. One hour of parking in the small parking garage is free. People who work here are super-friendly. read more

I moved here from California and seeing a Trader Joes, in walking distance, was probably the happiest day of my first few weeks here. Sadly, the store is *very* small and the selection is not nearly as amazing as it was in SF. The produce selection is not that great either, but I'm finding that's pretty standard for this area. My favorite part about this place is that I get to try new and exciting things. My second favorite is the dough balls. I heart the dough balls. They freeze well and I usually buy 6 or 7 of them at a time. Then the day before a dinner party I just toss them in the fridge to defrost. They make excellent bread sticks and pizzas. read more

Ashton's expertise and personal experience with each wine guided us to dozens of great buys. He helped us to choose the wines, walked with us to the register, and helped Joe, our cashier, box the wines as well. We appreciate the team effort and they helped us immensely. Ol' cookie cutting TJ lets me sample *all* the wines upon the counter. TJ gives me little tiny cups of coffee afterwards. Mmmm. So TJs is a grocery store... They have just the right food for me, which is organic fruit and veggies, some yummy sauces (kale cashew pesto- yummy!) but what makes it over the top awesome is that they are all human and all super helpful loving supportive people. I was going through some serious TJ's-withdrawal -- only to find that my favorite grocery store was hidden in the middle of Old Town Alexandria all this time! I like this outpost of the store a tons better than the super-crowded Arlington location and the inconvenient one in Fairfax. The underground parking garage is neat and clean -- with free validated parking up to 90 minutes for TJ shoppers. The store itself is decently sized and easy to navigate. The employees are helpful and available. And as always -- the prices are decent and the food is tasty! read more

Yep, it's a Trader Joes, but this one is in Old Town and a mere .5 mile walk from my office. Only weird thing is that the door into the TJ's is only on the inside by the parking garage, so you really have to walk ALL THE WAY around the building to get inside. They have handy signs along Asaph street letting you know to keep going, but definitely park in the garage for the shortest way in. Parking validation is self serve, right by the door. I got to the store right before it was supposed to close on Christmas eve. The girl at the door didn't let me in, which makes sense given that the employees wanted to close ASAP for the holiday. However, I explained that I had rushed to the store and only had one quick thing to buy that my sick father wanted for Christmas morning. The girl made no exception and was quite rude. This is my favorite TJ's in the area, but.... that first aisle - it's far too narrow and always crowded. I leave my cart outside and just run into the battle zone to get what I need. Brought my mom here for the first time today. She was pleased by the general manner of business. What really impressed her was after sampling something my children found too spicy, the clerk offered them some chocolate truffles instead. My children were elated as most children are when given free candy. Once consumed my 7 year old son went on a hunt to find the truffles on the shelve. He pulled out his money and began counting out the $3.49 it would cost to get a box to share with his sister. A clerk walking by was so impressed with his willingness to use his own earnings to purchase the candy that she bought one for him. The gesture nearly brought me to tears and he couldn't say thank you enough. I love that in most any other grocery store the day before a snowstorm, you find people stocking up on milk and bread. At this Trader Joe's, it's bread and WINE. Definitely more my style. Who needs milk, anyway?! Home of the famous two buck chuck (which, I believe, is 3.29 at this location) and many bottles of inexpensive but decent wine, this location has expanded drastically in the past year and now includes a very substantial space for booze. As for the rest of its offerings, Trader Joe's can be hit or miss. The staff is almost always friendly and happy to help me locate things, but it's not entirely unusual for them to be missing an item or two from my list. Much of the produce is sold bagged or packaged, and that generally means reasonable prices, but unfortunately often entails a rotten apple or two, so to speak. I've gone back and said "three of the lemons in the bag had gone bad" and they'll happily refund you, but who wants to trek back and ask for a refund for lemons? I've had this happen with pizza crusts there, too. Fortunately most of my usual staples have been fine aside from that. Trader Joe's has some great prepared meals, but others are really raunchy. I can never remember which I liked and which I hated, so I sometimes am afraid to add any to my basket. However, the butter chicken is delish and the ginger snap cookies are positively the most additive food in the world. Ridiculously good. They usually handle crowds here fairly well, but at times you practically line up to the back of the store. This seems to have improved since the expansion. All in all, it's a great little grocery, but I sometimes bypass it and head to Harris Teeter for better selection, or Giant for ease (I HATE the parking garage here, even though it's free). read more

As far as Trader Joe's goes, this place doesn't wow me in the slightest. In fact, I'd rather visit just about any other Trader Joe's. At each Trader Joe's, you're going to see the same Hawaiian shirts, the same products, and the same tastings of new wines and sodium packed frozen foods. So this review is for the shop itself. The parking situation is abysmal. Street parking is limited, although I've usually been successful in the evenings. Otherwise you're using the garage parking. The garage parking can be validated; however, you have to maneuver through the confines of the garage and the omnipresent line at the attendant for the one shopper who always seems to lose their ticket. The access to the store is through the garage. This means that if you are walking (as encouraged in Old Town), it's still necessary to walk around the entire store and into the garage in order to enter. According to the managerial staff, this is due to security concerns. I understand, and commend them in their attempt to reduce shoplifting, but what needs to happen is a store redesign. Passing by uninviting storefront windows with locked entry points is simply poor design and advertising. The store layout is similarly frustrating. The store is tight, but very long in an "L" shape. To get my favorite three-buck chuck (Charles Shaw Shiraz-no better bang for the buck), I have to traverse the entire store. Is this to discourage my cheap booze habits? read more

I am a complete sucker for phenomenal customer service and he exceeded all expectations. It's impossible not to love Trader Joe's and their pesto pizza, wine, blueberry beer, ahi tuna, and french onion soup. It is possible to nearly have an anxiety attack when you step foot into the Old Town location and find that it's packed. And there's a customer screaming at an employee about no longer carrying some kind of cracker. Living a couple of blocks away, I've come better at timing my trips so there are not as many people. But sometimes I do find that there are items that disappear for a few months only to reappear later (they also went missing from the Bailey's Crossroads store too). Having said that, they always have plenty on the shelves (almost no signs with nothing left next to them), and they are constantly restocking. I have plenty of favorites to pick from. read more

Even though it is not a REAL Grocery store and when you spend over $100 you find that half of it is snacks, wine or something you tried and found it was great but not as good when you got home. I give this place 4 starts because of the employees! Not all of them, there was a blonde gentleman with glasses that I over heard him and another customer making remarks about an Obama Shirt I was wearing. WHOOPS I forgot when I cross that bridge from Maryland to Virginia it turns into GOP country. But besides this guy who still works there 95% of the people are friendly. Discovering Trader Joe's in Old Town made my new home in NOVA much more palatable (city mouse relegated to random cul-de-sac in Alexandria; urgh); I have always enjoyed shopping at Trader Joe's due to the general lack of products with high-fructose corn syrup and other added weird ingredients. This particular Joe's is small but fairly well laid-out; try to go on weekdays, because weekends get a little squishy with the parking and the store. Trader Joe's and its neighbour Teaism validate garage parking for 1.5 hours, so you can shop and grab tea and park for free! If you are not familiar with Trader Joe's (or any Trader Joe's, for that matter), imagine a grocery store that doesn't have an overwhelming array of 20 brands of, say, ketchup. Just the tried-and-true basics, some unique gourmet items, and a selection that has been honed down to the stuff that we all know and love. Personally, I can credit Trader Joe's for warming me up to tamales. And frozen prefab dinners. The staff at this Trader Joe's is always attentive and knowledgeable. Every time I have needed help, they have been friendly and helpful. Having a constant stream of customers would wear down any cashier, but this staff manages to always be friendly and professional. read more

I love this store! We started going to Trader Joe's two months ago and we rather drive 6 miles than to go to another store, which is right next to our apartment building. I love how clean, organize and full of delicious products is. I love the wine and food tastings and we never forget to get a little shot of coffee of course. Big fan of Trader Joe's in general but this sucker was about the size of a bodega and like previously said here, a lot of the store is dedicated to the alcohol. I found a neat little item though, organic chicken breast packaged in individual sleeves. Perfect for the health minded single man. read more

I am pretty neutral on this place. Maybe its the layout of the place (giant L) or the fact that many of the items they sell there are kind of weird or the fact that it gets incredibly crowded. I am not sure. The prices are actually quite reasonable so I don't know why I feel so neutral about it and not more excited. There are actually some pretty great things about this place: -Milk and eggs are cheaper than at other grocery stores (only Harris Teeter 2.5 dozen eggs packs beat them) -They have some unique and affordable beers. They have large bottles of Boatswain and some other brand that I like a lot for less than $2 each! I am a big fan of their beer selection and want to try one of their "mystery packages" - that is a really cool concept. -For the past month they have had a sale on these salted caramel packets. They are amazing and addictive and each time we come we snap several up. Soooo good and I hope this special lasts for a while! -Agreed that the staff here is helpful and friendly. Of course, this lacks some things I look for in a grocery store like a good fish counter and some normal brands of food. I am holding out hope for the new Harris Teeter coming in 2013! But this place really isn't so bad, I guess I kind of just have a mindblock against it. Solid three stars for now. read more

Is a review even necessary? It's Trader Joe's! It's autumn right now, so Pumpkin everything! What more could I ask for? But, really, this Trader Joe's has some of the nicest, most helpful employees. Always asking if I need help or going out of their way to show me where something is. The crowd that frequents this location is also very easy to get along with. I do advise not to visit during after work hours... it gets pretty crazy. read more
