The staff is friendly, the wine selection is wonderful and the location is top notch. The produce can be iffy, but if you search for what you want you'll be fine. It tends to be busy, which can be obnoxious, but if you know what you want it makes it much easier. This Joe's is luxuriously spacious! The booze is also right next to the entrance, lest you forget that their location carries it. In fact, most of the layout of the store seemed really intuitive, at least to me, and I found everything I was looking for in the first or second place I looked. Also, during checkout today, my cashier opened my egg carton and inspected each and every egg. She found one that had the shadow of a crack in it and I was giving a new, unblemished dozen. "Every time I go to Trader Joe's (TJ's), I think it's going to be expensive. I'm a TJ newbie, but already on my way to becoming an addict. Their frozen foods selection is ah-mazing! I used to think that TJs would be expensive, but it's actually quite affordable & sometimes cheaper than Shaw's items. I'm in love with their frozen macarons (12 pieces for $5) -- it really does come close to tasting like the real deal & for that price, it's hard to beat as a delicate treat for yourself. The frozen pizzas are affordable -- $5 & enough to feed 2 people. Frozen chicken potstickers that are delish. I'm even in love with their Caesar salad dressing (which is like $2 for a nice-sized bottle). This location is always busy though, so beware & BE FAST! I don't get the TJ craze. Yes they do carry some hard to find items. But everyone claims or thinks that TJ's is actually a health food store. I beg to differ. They have a very limited produce section, you can't find too many meat alternative foods. They don't carry alot of the staples for a vegan diet. Awesome. This location sells decent wine for really cheap. Yay! Prices are great. Service is very good. I had to return a defective Trader Joe's brand product and got great attention and care from the manager/captain on duty. Parking is usually good, too, though taking left turns around Coolidge Corner is verboten. You have to twist and turn your way in and out of their parking lot, depending on where you're coming from. I love this Trader Joe's! - There is sufficient parking, which is so rare in this city. - It has a great wine selection so you don't have to make a separate trip to the liquor store. - The staff is very nice, although they are very weird about showing ID. If you even talk to anyone else in line they will ask to see their ID when you buy booze. When I was vegetarian, I used to come here all the time for their pre-made meals, too. Trader joes must really be my favorite place to shop from. I'm often teased by my family that I must be a stock holder the way I brag about how good this store is. I go back almost 28 years shopping at trader joes. With this little history put aside, what I love most of all at these stores are the price and the customer service! They are the best with keeping their customers satisfied. No questions asked for a refund. I like the fact that all the products that they sell has been packaged for trader joes. I think another requirement here is for the staff must be cheerful and friendly. I do love this about all the many different trader joes I go in! They have a section where they have samples. It's great to be able to taste a product before purchase or promote one! This location just like most other ones was nicely organized, pretty clean and well stocked. Trader Joes at Coolidge Corner has been great during the pandemic, offering senior shopping between 8 and 9am. Seemingly small efforts such as this go a long way towards reducing Brookline's COVID-19 rate. On November 18, I looked at their signage to confirm that I could get in and shop the next day, the day before Thanksgiving. The next morning I approached the entry and was surprised to see numerous young people in line. I figured they would be screened out once the line started moving at 8am., but this was not the case. The gate keeper explained that they decided to do away with the senior hour that day. He explained this to me directly under the prominent sign indicating the daily senior shopping hour was 8 to 9am. The interior was filled with people of all ages, including many seniors. As I shopped, I became troubled with the idea that on this busy day, the day before our national holiday of giving food and thanks, Trader Joe's management decided to put profit ahead of public health. As I checked out, my ideas had evolved to the point where I could be succinct with the cashier. She agreed with me and summoned a manager, who also agreed with me. After the manager left, the other cashiers who heard the conversation told me they appreciated that I had spoken up. In the past two weeks, Brookline's COVID incidence rate has risen from green to yellow. Trader Joe's managers squeezed out a little more profit the day before Thanksgiving, and plan to do the same with Christmas. Sensible seniors should just take their business elsewhere. This is all coming from a very, very loyal trader joe's shopper: compared to the trader joes on memorial drive, this one has less inventory sometimes (cards and other small things I notice!), the bathrooms here smell. I know public bathrooms are questionable in general but these were gross. this location is always busy, and parking is atrocious. the layout is crap on (shopping cart) wheels!! frustrating... the place is like a real, live headache! go to another location if you can, or at least walk there and skip the bathrooms! i am spoiled to be located near other TJ's. I have 1 good thing to say, now that my complaints are out.... PS The staff here has helped me on occasion and the staff at all TJ's are usually wonderful, knowledgeable people but this location being in such a densly- populated and highly trafficed area really just needs more space. read more

As far as TJ's go...this is an impressive one. Although this has to be one of the most crowded stores in the chain it still provides a good shopping experience. It's got the selection of a large grocery with the feel of a small local place where service isn't out of style. Floor space is small for the number of customers who walk throuh its doors; however its aisles are organized and maintained well enough that there aren't a lot of traffic jams at the registers. There is an excellent frozen section and a very good assortment of nuts and dessert treats. It lacks certain other amenities, such as a full-service bakery and a deli but in a neighborhood featuring many of these, their absences are not missed. I particularly like the wine and beer section. Although many grocery stores that sell wine have a larger selection the quality of this TJ's is unparalelled. And, yes, they do have an expansive volume of the various Charles Shaw vintages. That alone gets this store a star. Particularly noteworthy is the sales staff. I've always found them to be helpful and knowledgable, especially when it comes to their wine, and if I can't find something on the shelves that I've seen at another TJ's. They're an efficient group that keeps customer traffic flowing smoothly even during busy times. Kudos to them! Hate to dock the store a star, but...parking here is a nightmare. The lot gets filled up fast and the jockeying for spaces can sometimes resemble the last lap of a NASCAR race. Otherwise...this is a great store that serves its customers well. read more

I think of Trader Joe's as making professional grade knock off's of popular food items. They tend to cater to upper middle class (and upward) yuppies- Perfect for the Brookline area or out of town college kids who have parents that resemble the residence of the Brookline area in at least tax bracket. If you can manage to tolerate watching full grown men degrade themselves by waltzing between aisles in the L.L. Bean catalogue then you'll do fine. But, that aside. The prices are not that much worse than Shaws except for produce. The milk does not contain any rBST- a growth hormone used on cows that has been found to make the utter's puss and cause cancer in lab rats. The extra firm tofu is cheap and decent (mush it up with your hand into a frying pan and its like scrambled eggs for all those freaking on Bird Flu), the fresh salsa and their corn chips are both awesome. All nuts, trail mix, dried fruit shit-your-grandma-eats is good as well. For dry pasta- try the tortellini with mushroom filling, for fresh pasta- try the ravioli's with artichoke hearts (somewhat pricey). They also make a good jarred olive stuffed with garlic (they look mushy through the glass but they're really firm and crisp). And the booze. You can find the Charles Shaw for 2.99 a bottle, sweet deal, buy a case, I prefer the merlot so when I vomit up the few bottles I drank the night before I cant tell if i'm bleeding internally or not. You can find good deals on decent wines though if you bump it up a couple bucks and you know what your buying. For special occasions they also stock Ommegang, Chimay, and Allagash (try the Dubbel), but they also have some lurking rip offs. Just because a beer or wine is sold by Trader Joe's doesnt mean its quality by any means, case in point, Rialto- I bought a 12 pack on that assumption and it was nasty stuff (apparently i'm not the only one who thinks so.. http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/rialto-premium-lager/24835/3280/). And lastly, Trader Joe's is a speciality store to showcase their own products aimed at the afore mentioned demograph, meaning they dont have any of the ethnic foods or spices. And buy a copy of The Spare Change news from the guy outside, he looks like a balding crack head but hes a good guy and its only a buck- its an entertaining read.. read more

Trader Joe's = Love. I have a few problems with this place. -It could be bigger seeing how darn popular this location is. There has been times where I was so suffocated by the amount of people in there I have actually left to Shaw's. - They don't have the certain Morning Star foods that I like- it's sad. I have a love hate relationship with Traders Joes.... I got in for one thing and end up leaving with a ton of (great) stuff. Such as the other night, I went in for lemons and left getting lemons, fresh salsa, 7 layer dip, corn chips, french onion soup (that I sampled), thai curry sauce, garlic powder, and chicken. I love trader joes products beacuse they are really good quality and they are priced well. But I have to say my favorite thing about trader joes is their inexpensive flowers. I got flowers over a week ago and they are still looking fantastic, much better quality than Kabloom. You can leave with a lot of fantastic flowers for less than $15. Since moving to Brookline I have become an avid Trader Joes shopper and am finding it hard to go back to Stop & Shop or any other grocery store. Of course with this Traders being in Coolidge Corner, right off of the green line, it is going to be very crowded often. Like everyone else I usually only seem to find the time to go at about 6PM during the week or on Sundays. I am kind of over the fact by now that it is going to be packed. You just have to embrace it and realize that the lines actually do move pretty quickly - especially the express lines in the front. My two favorite things about this Traders in particular are the staff - they are all so nice! My second favorite is of course the free samples that they have every single day! They are always so delicious and make your shopping experience just a little bit better. read more

I know longer live near this Trader Joe's, and it seriously breaks my heart! Trader Joe's is one of my grocery stores at which to shop, and this specific store lives up to everything for which the brand is known. This TJ's is small, but it's packed with every ounce of TJ's glory. While it can be frustrating at times to dodge the other customers and make your way through the aisles, it's all done with the distinct mission to find a container of cat cookies or a bottle of three buck chuck. The staff here is absolutely wonderful, adding to the relaxed atmosphere. The only problem with this TJ's (hence the one star deduction), if the parking, or lack thereof. There's usually a Brookline police office directing traffic because it's that bananas! Speak of which - they have a great price for the above mentioned fruit. read more

I go there to pick up the little extras in groceries: white tea, unique app's that are easy to prepare, that bottle of wine that costs three times as much at the local liquor store. As Reviewer #289374 for Trader Joe's, there are not many more great things I can say about this store. I go here to buy basics (which for me are frozen vegetables, bags of lettuce and baby carrots, chicken, random dairy products, etc.) on the cheap. Check out the website for specialty grocery lists (http://www.traderjoes.com/reading_room.html). Now that I'm looking at it, they changed what's available online, ie they don't have the complete Gluten Free list up here. I have an older version printed out, but this is definitely something to ask the staff at whichever location you might frequent. They also have a list of rennet sources, something vegans might find very useful. My only new praise/gripe and the reason that I'm being stingy with the 5th star is that they started to list "Made on equipment shared with soy, nuts, wheat, etc" on all of their products. On one hand, this is great for people with food allergies/intolerances and shows that TJ's is aware that some people NEED to know this information. On the other hand, almost everything I pick up lists that it was made on wheat-shared equipment, so I get kind of annoyed that to play it safe I have to put something back on the shelf. So, I tend to avoid the packaged frozen meals, desserts, trail mixes, etc. But I still love Trader Joe's, and even if I couldn't eat anything they sell, at least they have cheap wine. read more

I really love this place... I live a lot closer to the Newton store, but the lure of "two buck Chuck" was tempting, and it was off to Brookline I went (Newton TJ's doesn't have a liquor license, boo). I went during their customer appreciation bbq, so there were tons of free food going around (hot dogs, burgers, their amazing organic lemonade/iced tea). I just feel happy shopping at TJs. Everyone is super friendly, and the people who work there have cool t-shirts. One of the employees was helping a visually-impaired guy do his shopping, and offering his recommendations (would that ever happen at Shaws...I don't think so!). Very cool place, even though I get confused as to where I am because there are registers on both ends of the store. I love the pita chips (way better/cheaper than Stacy's) and the spinach and artichoke dip. I have yet to try my $3 Cabernet Savignon...can't go wrong for $3 though! TJs luvvvvv!! read more

Love Love Love Trader Joes! I have been a walking advertisement for this place ever since I stepped into the one in Needham when I was 17. It's all over fantastic. The prices are cheap, the beer and wine selection is unreal (try their beer...you will not regret it). I found myself spending hours there when I lived in Brighton. Now that I live far away, I make every trip to TJs count...stocking up on everything from cereal to coffee. Their frozen food is out of this world. Try their Karat Cake and their Crab Cakes. I know the parking attendants are pretty aggressive here, but I've never had a problem with them until today. Whoever was out there just fifteen minutes ago kept pounding on my window and wouldn't stop until the car in front of me was able to get a spot and I could drive away. But once I parked, he stood right in front of my car. I was too scared to get out since I was a little ways from the entrance and he was a rather large man, and since it's a rainy day, there wasn't a line out front, so I was pretty isolated. Their soy cheese, Lizanetti, which can only be found at TJs, is to die for. I buy tofu here, since it's much cheaper than at other grocery stores, and dried fruits and nuts. I don't like Trader Joe's. 1. I love my produce. The fresh basil, the oranges, mangoes in stacks, vine ripened tomatoes in a big pile, mint in a tray of water, swiss chard, two or three kinds of broccoli, bok choy, lemons for individual sale. In other words, the produce section of Whole Foods is what I think of when I think of heaven. The vegetable selection at TJ's is severely lacking. Not only that, they shrink wrap everything! Everything's pre-packaged and ultra conveniet. But what if I want gourmet ingredients to cook a meal? Out of luck 2. The meat section is mediocre, and there's absolutely no fresh fish worth eating. No, Joe, I DON'T want salmon every night! Why can't I just have a nice tilapia filet? 3. The cheese section is disappointing. I've only been able to find gruyere here once, and it was some super special cave aged shit. I just want cheese, people! 4. The dried fruit is a bit excessive. Do I really need dried persimmons? Can't I just eat fresh ones instead? And why do you add sulfates to your dried peaches? That stuff made me cry every time I ate it. 5. I've no beef with the other random shit in the store, but to me a grocery store without a half decent produce section is like a store missing its soul. I love Trader Joe's, but as others have said, it's a good idea to go in with a list for two reasons: the pre-made foods are crazy tempting, and it is extremely crowded, so if I don't have a list, I get flustered and forget things. If you can go in on a weekday, it's best. Sundays are the worst. If you are close enough to walk/bike or if you live near the C-line, probably don't bother trying to park. Because the store is so crowded, if you need assistance from an employee, you need to be assertive and ask -- looking confused and frazzled is not enough, because everyone is a little frazzled. A lot of foods are cheaper here than at Shaw's! Pasta, beans (esp. vegetarian refried), bread, and some of my other favorites are cheapest here. As long as you're not looking for organic, for rice, I'd advice going to Super 88, and for dairy, I'd stick to Shaw's. The produce at this TJ's location is probably the best price/quality tradeoff for me in the area, but it is a little hit or miss. I once bought apples here in the middle of the New England apple season, and I cut into them, and five of my seven were completely rotten in the middle. However, the quality is usually okay, and just about always cheaper than Shaw's. read more

I load up on affordable produce and booze whenever I come in (BTW....skip the 2 buck Chuck....just buy decent wine for a few dollars more.). I've been a big fan of TJ's since one popped up near my home in Jersey. I've seen them in California and Illinois and I really dig the whole thing. I like the little things like their bags and how the designs change. And the personalized info cards under the items. My favorite things: frozen burritos, the frozen brown/white rice, turkey chili, the wine, the guacamole. I used to flirt with the Berry O's cereal, and the rice milk. I occasionally get down with the challah (which I pronounce "Holla!"). I like that I can find a lot of things that I like and that are original to TJ's. I don't like that I sometimes can't find things because they're out of stock, but I guess that's what happens when you have a small-ish store. read more

As a California native, I already knew that TJ's was awesome. But now, as a Boston-area-CA-transplant, here are the specific reasons why TJ's rules: 1. Liquor at the grocery store - this is a norm in CA, why can't you guys get it together over here? I'm looking at you, everyone who voted against Question1! 2. Actually CHEAPER than Shaw's! - I think most people associate TJ's with organic/health food, or Whole Foods even, which consequently leads them to the conclusion that it's expensive. But in reality, Trader Joe's is better quality food that is more often than not also cheaper. Especially compared to the grocery stores in the area (cough, cough Shaws on Comm Ave) which are super-inflated bc of all the students. 3. Inventory - I admit, I am still somewhat in that category I just identified--I still at times think of TJ's as a small, specialty foods store that will never have run-of-the-mill stuff I need, like sponges, or tomato paste, or flour. But they surprise me every time! I have yet to go there in search of something I doubt I'll find without them having it. 4. Convenience foods - as a working stiff, a lot of times I need quick and easy foods to throw in my bag in the morning for lunch. And TJ's has so many options that blow those gross and unsatisfying Lean Cuisines out of the water. Try their noodle bowls (just add water and microwave!), frozen pad thai, massaman curry, and teriyaki bowls, and those funny boxed soups next time you're tired of crappy tv dinners. Usually at $1.99 or less, they're such a better alternative. 5. Flowers - I never really used to buy flowers just for the hell of it until I became a regular TJ's shopper. Their floral selection is awesome and well-priced. You'd be surprised how much a small bouquet of sweetheart roses can cheer up your kitchen! My only criticism of Trader Joe's is that you have to buy a lot of their produce in bulk. I really just want one onion at a time, TJ's, not an inseparable bag of 6. Don't forget to bring in your own reusable grocery bag! They'll reward you with an entry for a drawing to win a $25 gift certificate! read more

Since I did in fact work here a bit during graduate school, I think it may only be fitting that I review this place. It also has been my primary grocery store for 4 years so I think that qualifies me as well. This particular Trader Joe's is actually the second busiest in the nation next to Manhattan and you can tell. At all hours of the day, people are pouring in, pouring out, and the Brookliners are buying their cases of Chuck. What is not to like about this place? Here's one thing, I wish they had fresh fish available but I guess buyers can't be choosers. I like many, am one of those people that leave work Friday, go by the Joe's and mix up a very inexpensive six packs of the 30 or so different varieties of beer for about 7.50$. It's great and I wish it was a practice of every store to offer mix packs. TJ's may not like it but the train's been rolling for a while so I doubt it will stop. This place has all you grocery needs.
