There's so much plastic waste that doesn't even need to happen. It's the reason why I only come here for here and there items. I have really enjoyed talking with Maurice over the last couple of years. He always greets my family when we are in the store and takes time to chat with us. Of all the grocery stores I've been to in San Diego during the pandemic, Trader Joe's stands out as really having their shit together. They limit the number of customers in the store to keep crowding and indoor lines to a minimum. Carts/baskets are disinfected. Designated entry/exit doors. A few aisles are one-way only, and they have staff to assist. Staff are very friendly and all were wearing masks properly. Aside from the pandemic precautions, I feel really good about how clean, organized, and friendly this store is: that's exactly what I'd want from a grocery store in normal times, too! read more

I love trader Joe's, however today I reached for the items in my cart to start bagging them and was yelled at to bag outside. This treatment was a shock. I've never been yelled at like that as a customer at trader Joe's even during the height of the pandemic. I will be hesitant to return to this location due to their disappointing customer service. If you look in my trash, all you'll see are Trader Joe's receipts. I love this place! I used to never shop here because I had this misconception that it was expensive. Now I'm always here because I feel like I get my money's worth. Oh the irony. This location is a bit snugged, and I loathe the tight parking lot...but when you have Trader Joe's, Ralph's, Starbucks and Chipotle all next to each other I guess you can't expect any less. The store itself is clean and organized. They are well stocked, and the workers are aways friendly. + they usually give out free samples in the back towards the meats! Trader Joe's is not a place where you buy in bulk because their packages are on the smaller end. It's perfect for college students who can't always finish food before it goes bad. I love getting all of my meats, dairy products, bagels, frozen fruits (I love the mango chunks!), and easy TV dinners here...aka pretty much everything. You walk around and all of the prices you see are like $6 and under unless you're in the meat and wine sections. There are no rewards cards, but who needs them with prices like these. read more

Are you serious? I can't imagine why this Trader Joe's has such high reviews and I feel like it is my responsibility to help take it down a couple of stars. Honestly, this TJs is worse than the one in Hillcrest in terms of crowds, parking, selection and just about everything else. The frazzled staff alone body-checking you to get through the aisles is enough to make you want to go postal. 5 things I would rather do than shop at the La Jolla Trader Joe's: 1) Slide naked down a pumice stone pole into a vat of saltwater. 2) Pierce my nipple with a rusty drywall screw and clean it with acetone. 3) Have someone drive over my bare foot repeatedly with studded tires. 4) Have someone with Parkinson's Disease shave my nut sack. 5) Have an ecstasy-fueled three-way with Sarah and Todd Palin while John McCain jerks off behind us. trader joes is what i consider my healthy addiction. i mean there are a lot of thing worse to be addicted to, right? there's crack...that's not a very good addiction. or oreo cakesers...that's sort of like crack too - but full of fat. hm...regular crack is probably a better diet then. I admit, I haven't been to many trader joe's other than this one since I've only lived in one general area since moving to SD (yeah, shame on me). I'm always greeted with a smile and some friendly ramblings. They never seem stressed, unhappy, or in a rush to get you through. i also give trader joe's props for being one of the first i can think of who started promoting reusable bags. This Trader Joes is always buzzing with energy! The place is always clean and pristine! The staff is always eager to help and you never feel like you're "a bother". I really appreciate the quality control Trader Joes has to offer in all the food. I generally shop at the Farmers Market for my weekly groceries, but can always count on Trader Joes for just as fresh produce and fish. They also carry all of our very "different" food items. Honestly it's a health nuts dream come true. :) I sincerely always feel so inspired to live a healthier lifestyle when I visit Trader Joes, any of the locations tbh. I love Trader Joe's! Has basically everything I need - vegetarian food, soy milk, fresh produce, flowers, free samples! (only good if it's vegetarian) Great selection of wine too ;) Also, it has my favorite cheese from Paris - Boison cheese yummmmm. (I think that's how you spell it) Not only that, the people there are chill, it can get a little crowded sometimes and there are times where I can barely move my shopping cart around, but its ok because it's pretty popular. The last time I was there, the cashier was super busy so I decided to help her out by bagging my own groceries (also, a habit I picked up from when I was in Paris) and she graciously thanked me for it :D The people are nice, the food selection is good, the location is nearby. I come here way too often for my own good. The cartons of soup. The soy milk. The pasta. The Greek yogurt. Everything about this place is awesome. There are some great deals on some awesome rockin food stuffs, even though a lot of it is hippie-friendly. My only complaint is that it can get very crowded and cluttered. And aisle space is lacking... but I guess that can't be helped because everyone and their mom loves Trader Joe's. One thing really weird about this place: everyone who works here is HOT. What the hell. My friends and I are convinced that it's a prerequisite to being hired. We'd be checkin out the super fresh Persian cucumbers for $2.19 in the produce section and then some burly hunkadoodle would walk past with big ol' boxes of who knows what in his well-toned arms, flashing a confident grin and crooning "Can I help you?" Every TJ's I've been in has too-narrow aisles, and it makes for chaos at busy times. They have good food, and good prices on many things, but we always need to go to a second store (like the huge Ralph's next door to this TJ's) to complete our shopping for the week. And I REALLY wish the corporation would get rid of the open freezers and fridges they use. That doesn't fit with their quasi-environmentally-friendly image. The parking lot at this mall should win an award...for being the worst designed, most terrible parking lot in America. So narrow, unnecessarily complicated to get around, weird corners, bottlenecks, you name it. An example of why design/build projects should not always go to the lowest bidder. That isn't Trader Joe's fault, of course, but it does affect you experience shopping here. read more

For anyone who has ever been on a diet or vowed to eat healthier, it is a well-known fact that you generally try to stay out of the center of a normal supermarket where all of the evil, processed, chemical-laden, trans fat harboring foods are. Trader Joe's removes most of that temptation and/or confusion for you. Pick up almost any food item on their shelves and you'll find you recognize all the ingredients. That's my kind of grub. Not only do they make it easy for you to treat your body right, but they make it all reasonably priced. My only problem with TJ's is the produce section. I like to pick out my tomatoes instead of having all six come in a package, sometimes it's not the freshest stuff, and for someone who has become increasingly more aware of excessive packaging and the environmental impact of our tons of trash, I hate seeing my produce come in unnecessary plastic containers - recyclable or not. I go to this La Jolla Trader Joe's from time to time because it's conveniently next to Ralph's, where I shop for my groceries. So, if I'm ever in the area and need to do a market run, I'll usually just pop into TJ's to check out their seasonal selection and buy some snacks. I don't do too much grocery shopping at TJ's just because it usually adds up, but I'll definitely get my favorite snacks--those "Milk Chocolate-Covered Potato Chips"--during every run. If I'm in the mood, I'll also get those "Candied Pecans" that are great for putting in salads (or just eating them straight out of the bag). It's best to visit this La Jolla store in the morning if you're going on the weekend. Once I went around 8 a.m. on a Saturday and it was nice and peaceful. However, I also went around 3:30 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon and the store was busy and chaotic! Definitely go during the morning to make the most of your shopping experience. I found this TJ's to be well-stocked and clean, and even on my first trip to the store, I was able to find everything I was looking for. Here are some of my go-to's when shopping at TJ's: "Cookies & Crème Cookie Butter": I tried the original "Cookie Butter" and liked it, but it just wasn't the same as peanut butter to me, and I still preferred the latter. However, a good friend recommended that I try this "Cookies & Crème" version when it debuted because she said it tasted "just like Oreos." I have to admit, I had my doubts, but I bought my first jar from this location--this TJ's was FULLY stocked on the "Cookies & Crème" spread--and when I tried it, it was AMAZING. Definitely better than the "Original," as this one was more of a spread (and less gritty). While my friend said she eats hers with a spoon straight from the jar, I use my "Cookies & Crème" on flaky biscuits and in plain sandwiches. It works quite nicely with bread, and this is one variety of "Cookie Butter" that I would definitely buy more of. "Mac & Cheese Bites": Great as an appetizer if you're having guests over for dinner or for a meal in itself, these "Mac & Cheese Bites" remind me of my favorite version from The Cheesecake Factory. They feature a rich, creamy mac & cheese concoction rolled into balls and lightly breaded. They're super easy to make -- just pop them into the oven and follow the instructions to bake and serve. I love the golden-brown breaded shell and the extra crunch and texture that it provides. And of course, the gooey mac & cheese mixture on the inside will completely satisfy any cheese lover ... the most difficult part is having enough patience for these bite-sized balls to cool so you can actually eat them. "Way More Chocolate Chip Cookies": I only bought this cookie pack once from Trader Joe's ... because after I tried it, I knew how dangerous it would be if I kept on buying them! These bite-sized morsels are absolutely studded with chocolate chips, just the way I like my chocolate chip cookies. They aren't too crispy, either, even though they're pre-packed. These cookies sport the softer, crumbly texture that I prefer when it comes to cookies. "Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips": Salty, sweet and crunchy all at the same time, these milk chocolate-covered wonders are probably my latest addiction (and most recent discovery), in terms of snacks at TJ's. Talk about addicting! While some might think these treats are too salty, I find them to have the perfect blend of saltiness and sweetness, thanks to the creamy, substantial layer of milk chocolate coating. At first, I was afraid that these chips would be too salty as well (I'm not a huge potato chip fan, and it's something I have to be in the mood for). However, these milk chocolate-covered potato chips were a pleasant surprise -- the milk chocolate layer is pretty thick, resulting in a denser, thicker potato chip. I think the longest a bag has lasted in my apartment is three days ... and that was stretching it. Granted, the small bag comes only half-full of potato chips, but it isn't hard to demolish the contents in one or two sittings. "Milk Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Pretzels": This was the first snack I tried from Trader Joe's. One bite of these addicting morsels and I was hooked ... I literally ate my first bag in one sitting. These bite-sized snacks feature square-shaped pretzels filled with all-natural peanut butter and are coated in milk chocolate. They're the perfect chocolate-peanut butter combo. I usually prefer soft pretzels over hard pretzels, but this snack from Trader Joe's is the exception. NOTE: Currently, TJ's is out of stock of these delicious treats! I haven't been able to find them on store shelves recently, and I finally asked one of the TJ's workers about them, and he told me that they're out of stock until further notice! I used to live right across the street from this trader joe's, and goodness freakin gracious I miss being able to shop here at my leisure. when I go grocery shopping anywhere else, I usually have a mental list of what I need and what I'll allow myself to buy. rarely does this work, but my intent is there. walking into trader joe's, on the other hand, I have no list. I have no agenda and few, if any, restrictions. keeping moderation in mind, I walk up and down each aisle, confident that my purchases are of good value, good health, and good quality. granted the cocoa powdered chocolate almonds aren't exactly "healthy," per se, but.. well, I've no justification apart from the fact that they're crazy delicious. certainly not the largest selection of fresh produce, but I can get what I need, and cheaply. they've got two buck chuck if I'm in the mood to be cheap and buzzed, Sebastiani if I'm in the mood to be slightly poorer and buzzed. from unique snacks to well-priced dairy items, TJs really has it all. on top of that, the staff here is real friendly and ready to help. I very much appreciate that, as a chain, trader joe's has been able to value and maintain that neighborhood grocery store feel, even as they bag my six bottles of charles shaw ($11.94 suckas!). I never knew Trader Joe's was such a great place to buy my groceries. I always thought that it was on the high end, that compared to places like Bristol Farms and Whole Foods. The quality of food is definitely there, but the price is kept astonishingly low! You can never go wrong with food that is both cheap and healthy. In fact, I've been shopping at Ralph's for the past four years thinking that it was the cheapest place in La Jolla, but right next door they sometimes actually have price comparisons between Ralph's price and Trader Joe's price. And I used to always go to Costco to get my bananas because you get a whole bunch for less than $2, but I think I found a cheaper place in this place. 19 cents each? I don't think you can beat that. However, Costco still tops Joe's when it comes to samples. For some reason, I always get the feeling that when Joe's hands out samples, nay, when Joe's has samples there, you have to make the effort to ask to try them. At Costco, you're free to take as many as you want and hop from station to station, but at Joe's, the sample station is in the back behind a glass protected barrier and the person won't ever offer you a sample; you must ask for a sample. If you stand there expecting to get one...they will just stare at you right back. But I guess that's the price you pay for cheap eats! **GET THEIR DARK CHOCOLATE PRETZEL SLIMS. I swear it will change your life. Great for curbing your sweet tooth and not too awful on the calorie intake but SO ADDICTING.** I usually don't go to this TJs because it can get pretty busy and I hate parking in their ridiculously awkward parking lot. I swear it's like trying to solve a jig saw puzzle. I find that Trader Joe's sells great quality foods and produce that are fairly priced. Other than the location of this place, this Trader Joe's sells most, if not all of everything I need. They have a lot of varieties of pre packaged greens (spring mix, romaine hearts, mache, baby spinach etc). Their mushrooms are cheaper than Ralphs. And their white nectarines are almost always ripe. They have burrata cheese...I didn't think they would but they do! and it was so g-o-o-d. I always get their par-baked filone bread and it makes for great bread for bruschetta. They also sell egg white salad that I use as an alternative spread for my whole wheat english muffins (also from Trader Joe's). They also have already cooked lentils in the refrigerated section that can make for a quick lentil soup. AND, one of my favorite things (other than dark chocolate pretzel slims) is their chocolate covered bananas and mango bars! The only things I don't usually get here are berries and poultry (or any other meats) cause I think it's a little overpriced (definitely cheaper at Henry's) BUT, for all other things, Trader Joe's is a great place to grocery shop at! read more

After gaining the freshman 15 and losing the freshman $1500, I resolved to stop shopping at Ralph's and mosey on over to Trader Joe's. This has resulted in happiness in the inexpensive forms of: - Dollar bags of pasta. - Pasta sauce. - Fage Greek-style nonfat yogurt. - Smoked salmon. - Dumplings. - Chicken breasts. - Eggs. - Milk. - Indian naan. - All kinds of hummus, dip, salsa, etc. - Frozen brown rice. - Whole wheat gnocchi. - Almond slivers. - Tofutti cuties! It's so nice to be able to read the ingredients and know exactly what it is that's in your food. But just 'cause you know don't mean it's healthy... there are still obstacles on my path to weight loss a la Hilary Duff '06, such as: - Ridics amounts of cheese. - Chocolate bricks. Not bars, but bricks. - Cookies galore. Just because it's organic sugar/butter/flour doesn't mean it's healthy... - CHOCOLATE GANACHE CAKE in the frozen desserts section. Best $6.99 I ever spent on a grocery trip. No lie. (I hear the chocolate lava cake is also divine. And oh, I sOoOo want a cheesecake...) Sometimes I can't find things I'm looking for and the lines are always long, but TJ's is definitely the way to go. Update 5/12/08: Confirmation of my love for TJ's. New product discoveries: - Trail mixes. I never really liked trail mix, but the "nuts about antioxidants" is great for throwing into couscous, and the almonds/cashews/cranberries mix hits the spot too. - Canned bean in marinade: Toss with a little orzo and olive oil. Delicious! - Frozen mangoes. Toss in blender with TJ's plain yogurt and a squeeze of honey = mango lassis. - Couscous. Fastest meal ever. - Soycutash: edamame beans and corn. Perfect for tossing into fried rice and the like. - Crushed garlic (comes in a little red box): cooking made easy. Staff is so friendly and I love how they are so good at packing my canvas bags! I found mini chocolate souffles here in the frozen section and I prompty bought half a dozen packages...(2 in each pack) which makes for 12! I'll never be at a loss as to what to serve for dessert with these babies at my disposal! They even come in their own cute little ceramic ramekins which I will re-use to make othe single-serving sized souffles of my own...I have a recipe all ready to go! I also really like their holiday narcissus and amaryllis bulb kits of several sizes and numbers of bulbs....and they have many varieties of orchids here too... Such a happy place! read more

What's not to love about Trader Joe's? They offer high quality items at extremely reasonable prices. I grew up thinking that Trader Joe's would be overpriced, but little did I know... it's often cheaper than Ralph's and Vons! There's so much that I frequently get from Trader Joe's. A few of the items I love are: Wild Mushroom & Black Truffle Flatbread: This thing is AMAZING. Give it a try, you'll fall in love with it. At just under $5, it's a fantastic deal for a nice snack or meal for 1-2 people. Oregon Chai: This is a fantastic way to "spice" up your milk with a great twist. It tastes super sweet though, so I tend not to follow its directions (1:1 mix of milk and chai) and do about a 1:4 mix of chai:milk. Also, if you want a cheap chai tea frap, just blend this, milk, and ice and enjoy! Indian food: Their Indian curries and their garlic naan are absolutely delicious! A bit on the pricier side, the curries are nice as an instant meal and pair up super well with their naan. One of my favorite instant meals for sure. Mochi Ice Cream: Their mochi ice cream here is super reasonably priced! It's substantially cheaper than all the other shops I've found, and they're delicious! (I would recommend letting them sit for a minute or two to warm up before eating it though) Chocolate Covered Panettone: These were amazing! I bought it on sale and it was yummy! It comes frozen, and you defrost it for a few hours prior to eating it. It's a nice dessert or snack and comes at a great price if you find it on sale. Frozen vegetables: I love some of their frozen vegetables, such as their vegetable melange and their roasted corn - they're easy and perfect for college students. Organic milk, soymilk, eggs - they're all very reasonably priced! This Trader Joe's, like all others, always have a nice sample area that offers a small snack and a small drink for you to try. It's always a nice refresher during grocery shopping. Due take note that parking is a pain here. It shares the parking lot with Ralph's and the stores around it, and it's probably one of the poorest designed parking lots I've run into... ever. read more

Trader Joe's is always a win. If you're a in a rush for food and you want microwavable food that isn't Hot Pockets, you can go to TJs for some awesome lasagnas, burritos, wraps, etc. This TJ is not any different from other TJs, so if you've been to other ones, this one is just as awesome. I have recently become a fan of buying potted flowers from them! They have a nice variety and they come in very cute plastic pots already so you don't have to worry about transferring them. They're also relatively easy to maintain. I love getting TJ snacks. They feel a little healthier, and if you choose carefully, you can find some pretty good snacks! I like their nuts section a lot because they make individually packed snack nut bags! There is never a long line because they have a funny little policy: "two or more is a crowd!" My lovely Mexican roommates approve. -Tangerine Juice: Fresh from California. Sweet, tangy, refreshing. -White Cheddar Corn Puffs: So tasty that they need to put these goodies in a huge bag. I obviously don't mind at all, because my regular serving of snacks is pretty much the whole bag anyway. -Cilantro Chive Yogurt Dip: Sick of sour cream or ranch? Try this with celery sticks, baby carrots, chips, salads, anything that you can think of. This review may be a bit bias since I work here, but I have shopped at TJ for many years. The people I work with are fantastic and we really do have fun and look foward to seeing each other at work. The products are all priced so low, I constantly find myself comparing prices with Raulph's next door. Last night I went into Raulphs to use the atm and the same exacy orchid plants there are 39.99 where at TJ they are 19.99. I was shocked! Trader Joe's extra firm tofu, the best tofu I have ever eaten. I just don't love the squishy stuff or dealing with a tofu-water mess every time I want to open a package of tofu. This extra firm tofu is just perfect for me - I can cut it up into tiny pieces and cook it on a pan without my tofu turning into a blue cheese crumbly disaster. On another note, I have noticed too often that people come here and buy LOADS of groceries during a very busy hour and awkwardly stand and watch as the cashier frantically tries to pack groceries. To those people, it is OK to pack your own groceries not only to alleviate some of the bottleneck that is happening behind you, but also to give your cashier a break. read more

I love Trader Joe's....really I am in love with it. I recently bought the cookbook "Cooking with all things Trader Joe's" and its been the greatest thing to come into my life since Glee. I have long since been a fan, but I am an even greater fan than ever and this is the place that I get all the products to make the wonderful dishes. The staff is great, the people store is laid out pretty well, its never too packed (except peak hours), well stocked, and if you need any suggestions of what to get, look at my other review for Trader Joe's. There is one complaint that I have about this place...and it has nothing to do with Trader Joe's...its more part of the process of going there. Any of you who have been here know what I am talking about...that parking lot. Really, it should not be called a parking lot...its more like a death trap from the depths of Hades. DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE STORE if you can avoid it...seriously. Park near the PetSmart or the underground structure....it will save you quite a bit of stress. It's a little further of a walk...but worth your sanity and less door dings on your car. I know Trader Joe's cannot help this problem, but this is part of the whole experience that comes with this place...if you avoid parking in the death trap...life's good. I love this place. If you know where to look you can find really cheap but good quality finds. Their wine selection is very good. Try the Black Mountain brand. It is priced under 5 dollars but it is really good (if you like dry wines). Rachael was right about those pretzels. The people who work here are really friendly and helpful. If you want to know about a product there is a good chance that they have REALLY tried it. Their frozen section is a lifesaver for when you are cooking dinner. This holds true especially when certain guests seem to show from nowhere right around dinner. read more

Trader Joe's is like the Mary Poppin's bag of grocery stores. Just when you think you've seen all it has to give (which is a LOT. How they manage to make almost everything themselves from alcohol to hummus dip to pasta is beyond me), you find out there's another trick up its sleeve! Located two minutes away from UCSD, this Trader Joe's is the perfectly convenient place for college students to find good quality and cheap groceries. This is my first and favorite Trader Joe's. My friend first introduced me to Trader Joe's by luring me in with the promise of "amazing free coffee." I LOVE coffee and I LOVE free stuff so how could I say no? Even though they no longer provide free coffee every day (they switch up the sample drinks now, which are not only all good, but smart of them as well), I always look forward to the days when I can unabashedly squeeze a ton of their yummy Organic Blue Agave Sweetener into my smooth coffee. There's everything you need in this place. I've tried their flavorful instant noodles (99 cents a container, which is such a huge steal!) and bought packages upon packages of their $2-4 raviolis (prosciutto, spinach, beef, and bacon carbonara flavors were all very good), which were easy to prepare (boil them and add just a drizzle of olive oil, basil/parsley, and parmesan can make these taste like restaurant-quality stuff). They also have frozen meals that are really good as well. If you don't know where to start, their samples area always gives amazing food for you to try. Not only are they smart in promoting their food, the food itself is so good that I always get sucked into buying things I wasn't even looking for. As for their sweets, get the Gummy Tummies Penguins. Don't even ask me why, JUST GET THEM! I came here for my first 21st birthday bottled alcohol purchase. I didn't want to buy hard liquor and took my friend's suggestion--moscato. However, my girl friends and I were completely lost as to what brand to buy and just which area to even start looking for the right moscato! Thankfully, a very nice gentleman from Trader Joe's sensed our confusion and came to offer up his suggestions. He was very informed about all kinds of wines and helped us pick out the Villa Alena Moscato D'Asti. I was tempted to buy their store brand moscato, but the Villa Alena one had such a pretty bottle. Next time, though, I'm definitely trying Trader Joe's wine! I do most of my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's. My favorite thing of theirs is the fresh produce that's already been cleaned and chopped. I also like that they have healthy options that taste good. I like their greek yogurt and also their lentil twists. This location is a good one! First of all, it's open until 10pm. That's the best! They are also good at keeping up with stocking their popular items. They also have a good store layout that's easy to navigate. The staff is really helpful and even if the place seems crowded, I find that the checkout lines move quickly. Parking's a bit of a pain. Luckily I live close enough that I can walk there. I am a frequent customer at this location...I probably stop by on my way home from work 1-2 times a week. read more

Trader Joe's has always been my favorite grocery store and shopping there on weekly basis. I love their non dairy frozen deserts. My sister recommended to try mochi ice cream and I didn't experience this desert before until last week after a busy working day I found this at trader Joe's. I was skeptical about whether I like them or not but there is something about the chewy texture of mochi that makes it wholly unforgettable. I adore their machi ice cream it not to sweet and It test like a natural gummy candy and marshmallow combined. Highly recommended. read more

Apryl and I are not 'granola' in the slightest bit, so we rarely pick up much more than wine here. I'm not saying that there isn't good, decent tasting food here, it's just not our thing. We do however, make a point of picking up a few (sometimes it's a dozen) bottles of Charles Shaw wine from Trader Joe's every week. Two buck Chuck is awesome! read more
