Absolutely Awful Customer Service. If I could give zero stars on Yelp! I would. At this store not even the "manager" cares. I went into this Trader Joe's on the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 27) at approximately 5:45 PM to buy a few items. (The shelves were picked pretty bare, but that's not my complaint, because over the years that I have shopped at this particular Trader Joe's I have come to expect that.)
I hadn't been to this particular Trader Joe's in months because the store is always crowded and the service is generally poor to very poor. I was looking for several items, including packaged sushi. Since I didn't find the packaged sushi where I expected to finding it I asked a nearby store employee if he could point in the general direction of where I might find it. (I didn't want to take this gentleman away from his work, I was just looking for guidance in the form of a general direction.) What was this gentleman's reply? He pointed to the ceiling to make me feel like I had asked him if he could point to a neutron star in the constellation Nebulas. (He did then walk me to the sushi, which I wasn't expecting him to do, but which was awkward after being treated like $#!+.)
As if insulting a customer was not satisfying enough for this gentleman, he went over to the food sample table and bragged about the wonderful customer service he provided to me to the woman working that table. (He told the woman behind the sample table, "this guy asked me where the sushi was, and I pointed to the ceiling, ha ha, ha ha.")
As you can see from my other reviews on Yelp!, I rarely post reviews that are about bad customer service, because I prefer to be positive, and to not further frequent places where the product/service is bad. This time was different, because I felt that I was insulted as a customer and that no one else should be subjected to this type of treatment. This time I decided to not only post my feelings on Yelp!, but also decided to call the store manager. (The reason I didn't ask to speak to the store manager when I was checking out several minutes later was because I thought I should just let it slide, like one normally lets slide the small daily slights of life.)
When I called I asked to speak to the manager. The gentleman who picked up the phone said, "how can I help you," without acknowledging that he was the manager. I asked him if he was the manager, to which he indicated yes. To be honest, I really wasn't sure that I was talking to the store manager. I told my story to the "manager," to which he agreed that his employee's behavior wasn't appropriate.
He asked me to provide the employee's name, which I didn't catch. He asked me if I could provide a description of the employee. I provided the following description, "white male, crew cut hair, approximately 5' 10," wearing a red Trader Joe's hoody working in the aisle where the sushi is kept." (At the time, I think this was the only employee working in that aisle.) The manager indicated that the description I gave him was not sufficient, and that he couldn't do anything because the description I gave him didn't allow him to positively identify who the employee might be. (From the manager's tone, it sounded more like he didn't want to take the time.) If the "manager" really wanted to investigate, he could have started with the woman who worked at the sample table, but then I don't know that I was really speaking to the manager. read more
