It's unfortunate that this location is out of the way for me because I love shopping here. They always have unique items and great pricing on their fruits and veggies. They don't have all of my regular food items but for me it's always worth the trip. Also - one of the few grocery stores where the folks at the checkout actually say hello to you and are always friendly. Considering the amount of rude/crazy people they must deal with it's a miracle they're all so nice! The parking lot is a nightmare on the weekends but still worth the trip! read more

I'll never come back to TJ's for any reason whatsoever. Why? Because of one of the cashiers in Reston, VA, took it upon himself to completely ignore me while waiting in line & decided to start checking out the person in line behind me. To make matters worse, I only had 5 items & the person behind me had a full cart. The people waiting in line in the isle next to me, saw what happened and asked politely if I would like to go in front of them, since I only had 5 items. I kindly declined & decided to leave the store without making a purchase. I'm not in the business of rewarding awful behavior from deplorable people (positive reinforcement). I love Trader Joe's! I go here because it is closest to my work and I can frequent on lunch breaks. The wine selection here is awesome and TJ is my go to for cheap but delicious wine. I also frequent here for their dried fruit and nuts section. I make my own trail mix using their goodies. The frozen pre-prepped meals are yummy and the cheese selection is amazing and affordable. I got the triple crem brie for 4 dollars and it was worth every penny! read more

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Trader Joe's. It is like the Disney comparing to other grocery stores - the happiest place to shop for groceries. The staff is always more than happy to have a friendly conversation with you and offer you their help. This week when I was there, there was a great Santa Claus greeting you -- I mean he really looked like a good/real looking real Santa Claus! As we left the store after about 30 minutes(yes, we love to spend time there and check out new stuff ^_^, we noticed the Santa Claus was working in the store as his regular jobs. I heart Trader Joe's. I can't say I've been to one that I didn't like. This is the one I frequent the most and I like how the VA ones carry wine. I've sampled a few red and white wines here and they're pretty good for the price. The prices are what make TJ my preferred grocery store in comparison to Whole Foods, MOMs, and Harris Teeter. I still thoroughly enjoy shopping at those places for many great reasons. But when I need specialty cheeses and staples, such as eggs, milk, and yogurt, I instantly think of driving here. They have quality cheese and dairy products at budget friendly prices. Other items that are worth buying at TJs include dried fruit and nuts, granola, bananas, avocados, spices, and Giotto's extra virgin olive oil (Trader Giotto - Italian inspired products). The prepared foods section is nice when you're grabbing on the go. But I feel like some of them can be a hit or miss. I definitely do not recommended the sushi. I'm also not crazy for the wraps, but the salads are worth a try. Not only do they have prepared lunch items, but they have already seasoned meals to bring home for the days when you really don't want to cook. I'm guilty of those days and I've turned to their frozen marinated half rack of lamb, gruyere and onion tart, marinated pork loin, and frozen boxed meals. They are easy to heat up (meats require pre-searing before the oven works) and I can whip up fancy dinners without breaking a sweat. Last but not least, TJ is family friendly. Everyone is super friendly, helpful, and always have a smile. The island theme is cute and their registers are named after places in the neighborhood they're located in. They have an area for children activities when the parents are shopping. Or the kids can tag along and go on a hunt for the TJ stuffed animal! read more

Most of my cooked dinners constitute broiled or baked fish. So I've made my peace with the inevitable mercury poisoning, but apart from that I've tried to find myself the best possible grocery store fish that doesn't render me broke either. So whilst Harris Teeter sells "fresh" fish, it means non-re-frozen. It could be sitting behind their stupid glass counters for days. Therefore most of what I've bought there has been rather dry and flaky. Wholefoods, or wholepaycheques, is obscenely expensive for anything that isn't a feeder fish. And though most of what they have is caught within one or two days, it's still not worth what they charge. Giant - no, just say no. I don't think they can even tell the difference between fish and chicken. Brings us to Trader Joes - so it's all frozen. But from what I've read, it's frozen once on the boat and then directly defrosted in your kitchen. And that's most easily validated by the taste - I usually get their cod, haddock, white salmon or mahimahi. They're all very good, and very reasonable. read more

I live a few blocks away from this Trader Joe's and have no idea what the reviewer who suggested bringing a handgun to the parking lot is talking about. This is not a dangerous neighborhood - it's Reston, for Chrissakes. Trader Joe's vs. Whole Foods - give me Trader Joe's any day. I find Whole Foods stuffy, overpriced, pretentious, full of self-important people, but their wine selection is decent. Trader Joe's has a wine selection that nearly rivals Whole Foods, but the vibe in TJ's is a whole lot cooler - maybe it's the west coast (TJ's) vs. east coast (W Fs) thing. And who doesn't love their newsletter? I'd like a job writing for that thing. The prices are outrageously good. I found a bottle of A to Z Pinot Noir from Oregon on sale for $17 once. This wine goes for over $20 everywhere else. And they have wine tastings occasionally handled by the friendliest folks you can imagine. Management must be doing something right. Every employee in the place acts like they're on an overdose of happy pills. Some reviewers have complained about the high prices here. Maybe they're buying bona fide organic foods. I don't. I come here for the booze, snacks, cookies and the occasional well-priced frozen offerings. read more

Have recently had two occasions to order flowers from Trader Joe's. One for a charity event and one for my grandson's wedding. Not only were the flowers better than floral wholesalers, but the attention from Michelle in the floral department was exemplary. She went above and beyond to make sure the order was correct, on time, and in perfect condition. I would love to have her on my staff. I usually like going to the Fairfax Trader Joe's. But this one is horrible. Staff are not friendly at all, i had this weird cashier serve me, she was Caucasian, but with dreadlocks, she was not very courteous and rather rude. She didn't say hello, it felt like she didn't really want to help me, even though I had a baby, she didn't offer to help in any way, and to make matters worse, she kept talking to her colleague who was packing my bags, ignoring me completely, there was no conversation and no offer for help. Trader Joes is the best grocery store around. I love how the majority of their stock is their own brand and I have pretty much enjoyed everything I have tried. They have such a good range of healthy, diverse food...not to mention inexpensive but delicious wine selection. Their price points are very competitive with other chains (and mostly even cheaper!). My only wish is that they had more produce. Some of their food that I can't get enough of: - Orange Chicken (frozen section) - Korean style Ribs (frozen section) - Black bean and corn salsa - Banana or strawberry granola bars - Mushroom and asiago cheese chicken sausage - Spicy flaxseed tortilla chips Best thing is that you can feel free to try anything because if you don't like it, you can always bring it back. Love this TJ'S! Once I realized this was here and so close to my house, I stopped going to any other grocery stores. It's a bit mind-blowing how much smaller my grocery bill is when I go here instead of Safeway or Giant or Target, and my favorite part about this store is how NOT overwhelming it is (size and amount of stuff). I don't procrastinate my grocery shopping anymore because it doesn't feel like a huge undertaking the way it does in other stores (especially like a Wegmans). It has everything you need in a compact little space, and not a zillion bajillion brands of the same thing but just a few reliably solid options for whatever you'd want. Love their pretty and inexpensive flowers; I'm a flower snob and every once in a while they have a pre-made bouquet that I actually like and that is actually decently-priced ($9.99 versus the Whole Foods $20 pre-made bouquets). They have cute, original, cheap cards too. Love all of their TJ's brand products (juices, yogurts, cereals, etc.) and the staff is BEYOND friendly. They even try to get into conversations with you at the registers which remarkably usually don't seem fake and small-talky. Parking is awesome because even though the lot is small, you can always find parking, and all spots are close! read more

I found my love with TJ when we were renting in 90's in Tyson's corner area. Falls Church TJ had unique variety of food that I could dare to try out. Fast forward still a TJ friend. Only qualms about Reston TJ is it is bit small and parking can be a challenge. Price are def. reasonable compared to WF. WF in Reston has same issue parking is a challenge. My favorite are: Organic Jelly, maple syrup, Gnochi, sauces, cheese, pizza dough in the freezer section and cakes & pastries collection. read more

I cannot believe I haven't written a review of this place yet. Maybe because I'm just too busy shopping there. I've been shopping at this location for something like 10 years and I've never had a bad experience. The only bad thing about this place is the parking lot. It's too small and although they try to make sure traffic flows only one way, people ignore the roadblocks and drive where they like. That said, every person at this Trader Joe's in unfailingly nice. So much so that I think someone should run a chemical analysis of their employee water cooler or coffee pot. I've only ever purchased one food item (chicken enchiladas) that was not good. There are a few other things that I don't love, but only the one that was truly icky. What else? Have I mentioned how crazy nice the people are? Ooh, how about foods I love... steak and ale pies (frozen), prosecco vino frizante (wine), dearly beloved I thee red (wine), carne asada steak (refrigerated), bay blend (coffee), lemongrass chicken sticks (frozen). Never thought I would have a bad experience here, but you're only as good as your last example. The cashier was extremely rude, I am unsure as to why, but he started taking the customers behind me while my basket was sitting on the counter. Lady behind explained, "but he (me) was next..." but the cashier said, "no it's fine" and started scanning her items. The lady apologized. I had to go to another cashier. Very awkward. read more

The wonderful Trader Joes is one of the handiest stores to every have. As I can stand on my balcony and look at it, it also serves a certain element of convenience. However I digress, it's got a lot of European beer that I love, Guinness, Hoegaarden and nice simple dinner wines. There are 4 things I just have to get from there. Their candy covered fruits, their single portion pizza, their mochi ice-cream, and their Thai green curry. Things to die for. Be careful though, trader joes has both their own brand and independent branded products. Their own brand of products while cheap, often lack some qualities. But the independent brands are fantastic. While your there, check out their coffee selection, it's fantastic! Oh and if you like cooking, it's got some great supplies, make sure you check out their spanish safron, it's only $2.50 per 4oz jar. read more

Trader Joe's rocks, FACT. Not just this one, all of them, FACT. I often stop into trader joe's to get their super cheap frozen bowls for lunches at work. I stock up on about 5-7 of them at a time. The best the kung pao chicken bowl. They are such a good deal at 2.50. As for the rest of the store, its clean, always stocked, helpful staff all around. I love that that its all their own brand and so i think that lessens the price of many items. One complaint is that some veggies and fruits come in packs and sometimes i want one pepper. Oh well. Another great deal is the frozen fish. It ends up tasting so fresh, despite being frozen. I don't do lots of grocery shopping here, but their frozen foods are sweet, especially the sweet corn. read more

This location is closer to me than the Centreville location, but unless I'm in Reston, I go to Centreville. This location has very little parking. The store itself is smaller than Centreville and their selection isn't as good. For example, there is a cream cheese goat cheese that I like to get. This location never has it. I look every time. The store is always clean and the staff is always nice. I'm lucky to have the option to go to the other Trader Joe's since it's only a mile further than my house then the Reston location. read more

Shopping at TJs is a feel good experience. If you do not bring your own tote, they have paper bags ONLY (that is good). They have their own line of items, which are not always organic but are nice to try because they do not come from Safeway or Giant (or Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, or even Wegmans). TJ employees dress in patterned Hawaiian shirts and almost all act like they enjoy being there. Makes for a pelasant shopping experience. I particularly like their honey mustard, basmati rice (brown and white), curry sauces, and trail mixes. The broken Ghiradelli chocolate pieces at the front tempt me half of the time. TJs has a nice wine and beer section. TJs is a great place to do holiday shopping, with a tremendous selection of chocolate covered fruit and nuts. Yum! read more

I've been here more times than I can count and have NEVER dealt with a rude employee. I hate when I am shopping somewhere and go to checkout... Only to NOT be greeted while the cashier chit chats about how much they want to leave work. I'm thankful I've never dealt with that at Trader Joe's. So... If any of you Trader Joe's employees read this, thank you for not being rude! Most of their stuff is very well priced, especially in comparison to other shops. Their organic liquid stevia costs significantly less than what you would find at Mom's or Whole Foods. They also have the BEST plantain chips EVER. This is a small store, so you're not going to find everything here that you would find at the majorly overpriced Harris Teeter near by. Between TJ's and Mom's I am able to get everything I need or want. There is one thing I hate about this place though... It has nothing to do with the employees - it's dealing with other people who shop there. It's a small store that is usually crowded... And while people know this... Quite a few of them have TERRIBLE grocery store cart etiquette. Annoys the hell out of me. Don't leave your cart right in the middle where nobody else can get through. MOVE IT TO THE SIDE AND BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS. Also, be mindful of the road because there have been some major potholes that could really destroy a tire or wheel. They stay involved with the community by participating in festivals and having activities right outside the store like pet goodies giveaways. Nice store! Very well organized and probably my favorite TJ store so far, regarding the DMV area. The staff is always SUPER super friendly, very helpful and quick.... they are very attentive at all times. I like buying groceries there because I can usually find a lot of good deals. I find it to be a bit less expensive than lots of the other organic markets near by (?) Avoid evening hours since it gets quite crazy in there at that time and finding a parking spot will be impossible. But that shows how popular it is. If I could give more than five stars, I would. The staff is cheerful and helpful, the fruits and veggies are superbly fresh, all of the TJ brand items are fantastic, and the price is definitely right. It's not my main grocery store, but they have items I can't do without (i.e., my husband languishes if we run out of the Veggie & Flax Seed Tortilla Chips). I usually go once a week around 8:15A and have never seen a store so pristine, well-stocked, and in order right at opening time. The only downside is that the parking lot can be tremendously frustrating when there are a lot of shoppers. There's nothing the store can really do about that, but it is a major reason why I usually shop on my way to work. Even if you do the bulk of your shopping elsewhere, there are lots of great items to get you hooked into coming back. read more

This morning was the first time I'd been in here in many years. Ever since the TJ's in Centreville opened I've been a loyal shopper there. I was very impressed by how stuffed the shelves and freezer bins were here. Maybe they'd just been stocked, but it seems they are almost always low or out of what I want in Centreville. It seemed like there was an infinite bounty of groceries here. I think it is smaller than the other locations, but I really like the diagonal aisle layout, and seems like space is more maximized than in C.V. where a good portion of the store is just open space with a couple tables of wine. I'm sure it would be tight if it was crowded, but coming at 9:30, I basically had the store to myself. Bonus-my daughter found the monkey. If you're looking for it she hid it in one of the refrigerated cases. read more

Regular grocery shopping bores me but this place has fantastic selection and and hundred gourmet-ish but affordable options that you might not have even considered before walking around the place. This is a pretty poor specimen of a Trader Joe's, but I still end up here frequently because of its convenient location. Parking is a mess and their lot is too small, even on weekdays after work. It's smaller than most locations, and I've often been unable to find fairly common items that I get at their other locations around town. I usually have to make a second stop at Giant or Safeway when I come to this particular Trader Joe's, but if you're just going in for a particular item, like wine or something to take to a party, it should be sufficient. read more

The thing I love most about Trader Joe's is that the beer and wine section takes up just as much space as the produce section, perhaps more. It's always easy to pick up a nice bottle on your way to a friend's place for dinner. The staff are super friendly, helpful, and quirky (in the good way). And they all chit chat with you at the checkout line like they've met you before. It's nice - it reminds me of living in a small town. And that leads into my one complaint, which really isn't a complaint - I'm glad there's not a million brands to choose from, it makes shopping quick; however, oftentimes they don't have items I need, so I have to go other places before going home. But for cooking a nice, healthy meal with a great bottle of affordable wine, TJs is THE place to go. It's a great place to go for those healthier things you have a hard time finding, the prices are also relatively acceptable. We usually make it a special trip and slowly make our way around We've enjoyed the following: Sweet potato dip chips The salsa Coconut chips Pomegranate limeade Jelly beans Chocolate covered salted caramels The frozen or fresh to go stuff hasn't really been amazing, but we haven't tried everything yet. Trader Joe's is an eclectic grocery store...certain items are a bit expensive whereas other items are a great deal. I come to Trader Joe's mainly for the wines, cheese and frozen section. The wines/cheeses are not your run-of-the-mill types you see at the grocery store (although they have those too), you can find great tasting smaller brands. This is the kind of place you find new, interesting items to try and then they become your favorites. The frozen section is definitely my favorite...from the dessert to the tamales to pretty much everything else, you can't go wrong. Also love their salsas. Normally, I would give these chain 4 stars but the Reston location is large, clean and the staff is extremely nice. I love Trader Joe's and this store is no exception. The parking lot is rather small but I've never had an issue finding a spot. Their ready made sauces are delicious and meat/dairy is fresh. I love the snacks they stock and could fill up a cart on just those. Their brand name stuff is delicious and I usually opt for those while there. I can't necessarily do my weekly shopping here since they can't possibly stock everything a giant supermarket does, but I can get about 90% of what I need. read more
