Trader Joe's continues to be one of my go-to grocery stores! The customer service here is excellent. Every employee I've interacted with has been friendly, helpful, and genuinely upbeat. You can really tell they enjoy what they do. The store is well-organized, checkout lines move quickly, and I appreciate how team members always offer to help find items or recommend new products. The sample suggestions and seasonal items are fun to try too. Love this location and a Trader Joes is never a bad bet. Parking is much easier and less of a maze than the Hillsdale one, an easy breezy in and out, as with all T.J.'s it not too overwhelmingly large aka Costco but also not a mom n pop pinky dink supermarket. It's perfect with all sorts of things you never knew you needed or wanted, less market than a treasure land. Everyone super helpful and on the ball, all aisles neatly organized and labeled. The parking lot readily accessible. The exterior is pleasing aesthetically laid out with flowers and bouquets, as is the front of the entrance. Nothing not to love here! read more

On the afternoon of New Year's Eve, I went to my favorite Trader Joe's on S. Grant San Mateo to use a gift card that kind Neighbors provided me. It was to get beverages for a neighborhood party that evening that I would be contributing to. The gift card didn't work. The new design is flawed. I had the receipt and provided it to a team member. He then went and got Chris Clarke. Yes, Trader Joe's, Superman! He couldn't exchange the card because he had to contact corporate and and it would take time to replace it. I'm on very low income and that was an expense I didn't plan on. Chris provided me with a gift card on his own dime and he would absorb the time it would take to replace my original one. If that's not called "holiday spirit" and professional, exemplary service, I don't know what is. Chris Clarke - you surprised me and delighted me, Trader Joe's is lucky to have you as an employee. They used to have one checker for 15 items or less they've done away with this. I shopped there all the time and I'm a good customer I've requested they bring this back on several occasions they have not so I will take my business elsewhere Safeway or Whole Foods I stood in line for 20 minutes with 2 cans of tomatoes today absolute ridiculousness the 2 people in front of me had full shopping carts as did every checker They saw that I only had 2 cans and it's a Sunday you know for all you church people who believe in doing something nice for someone ...they didn't even have the decency to offer me to go ahead of themwhich I would've done in a heartbeat for someone else. This has become my favorite TJ's location in the Peninsula when compared to South City and Millbrae. The parking lot is a little less crazy since there aren't other restaurants, stores or Bart (in south city) nearby. The shelves are always stocked for the most part and workers are always helpful and friendly. My only gripe is I highly dislike when workers are restocking during peak business hours like Sunday afternoons because the crates take up so much space in the already tight aisles and you kinda have to zig zag through the staff on top of dodging carts and other shoppers. I wish they had set times/dates they scheduled this to not interfere with the shopping experience. I guess the plus side of this is they're always receiving stock and items will always be replenished. There are some days where I'm in and out of there if I need to pick up only a few things, but a lot of the times I like to stroll up and down the aisles to discover new products to try. But it does get discouraging when I feel like I'm in the workers way. That's all - otherwise no other complaints about this location and can't go wrong with a lot of TJ products! read more

Although, all Trader Joe's are consistent almost all similar this particular one has lots of parking ( unlike the Masonic street one in San Francisco). This is the place to grab lunch or a few items. I enjoy the free samples and good customer experience. This location has an interesting wine selection. Overall a place to get your fix for a snack attack. read more

I love TJ's, but not this one. Yes, it has all the great things I get at other locations, but the experience is poor. Tight aisles, ultra busy, smallest of all I've been to. Then, to top it off, the cashier was borderline maniac depressive -- zero personality, very uncommon for any Trader Joe's employee I've ever met. Best TJ's in the Peninsula! Trader Joe's can't be beat. The quality, pricing, and seasonal items are so good! I discover something new on almost every occasion and love to share them with other TJ lovers in my life lol. They also have cool plants (always changing) which I'm really into right now AND the greatest cards! They're really creative/funny and only $1! This location is roomy and lots of parking available. Not crowded or hectic like other locations. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Most recently they helped me search for some ripe avocados when I needed to make last min guac for a potluck. My fault for not preparing earlier. The staff was so nice and found some in the storage since there were none on display. The customer service goes above and beyond here and it's always been consistent. Been shopping here since I moved to the Bay 3.5 years ago. I've since moved around the peninsula a bit so have visited other TJ's, but have found this location to be the best one! read more

Today at the Grant location, the store was exceptionally great because it was peaceful and quiet.....NO MUSIC! Staff said their store radio was broken therefore they ALL (including staff) did not have to put up with the usual music, all day long. Otherwise, my very favorite store where I do most all shopping. This review applies to both the Hillsdale and Delaware Street locations so I will be posting the same for both. This is a once great store that has gone downhill since the pandemic started. - Fruits and veg are no longer very fresh and usually spoil within days of getting home, especially the fruits. - Cheeses show mold typically within 2 days of getting home as well - Several frozen items that we have kept on hand for the last 20 years are no longer of the same quality and not worth buying - such as the mini-tacos, Parmesan Pastry Pups, and the tamales We still do about half of our shopping at one of these two locations weekly but Raley's and Whole Foods are now the go-to spots for dairy and produce. Even Safeway stores in the area are better bets for those. read more

Smaller than the other TJ's in San Mateo but still have a great selection. I used to live about 2 miles from this location and really didn't know how good I had it until I moved to somewhere that my nearest TJ's is about 20 miles away. The staff are always friendly at this location and everything is pretty well laid out,. here's those regular items you always get every shopping trip you make and with the layout getting mine are really easy. - Wheat Flat Bread - Tzatziki dip - Mango Greek Yogurts - Pesto And then a quick brows around the rest of the isles for any new items. I must say, the prices are also excellent. Not being a Bay Area native and first moving here I thought this place was going to be expensive (like Whole Foods) but it really isn't. A lot of the items I get from here are cheaper than other grocery store's like Safeway and of course are fresher and taste better. *TIP* Try the Mango Greek Yogurt.. seriously. If you've been to one Trader Joe's, they're pretty much similar from one location to the next. That is why I love the consistency of this company. We frequent downtown San Mateo a lot, and finding this location was an added bonus as we decided to drop in and do a quick grocery shopping. I have cousins from Hawaii who can't get enough of Speculoos Cookie Butter. Every time they visit the mainland, they always stock up on Speculoos products to bring home to the Islands as if they're stocking up for a hurricane. I think every Hawaiian I've met is addicted to this stuff. It must be torture for them that they don't have this stuff in the Islands. Maybe it's a good thing since their diet consist of a lot of fattening food. Don't get me wrong here, I love Hawaiian food, it's just that it's not the healthiest. Oh boy, I'll probably get a backlash from that comment. Please spare me the criticism, my Hawaiian friends. Let's go back to Speculoos: Why do I mention this product? It's because it was the first thing that I saw upon entering this store. They have display cases in the front and back of this place; AND...the limit per person is six. Usually, they only limit it to 3 per customer, but not this place. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a mathematical genius to figure out that that's double the norm. OK, I was being sarcastic there. So me and the wifey split the grocery so we could purchase a dozen. That's called "Tag Team," my friends. This is one of the many benefits by having a partner. You know, it's similar to dropping them off at the movies so they can purchase the tickets while you find a parking space to save time. Yeah...it's like that. This branch is not as well monitored as the Hillsdale branch . The line outside was almost in darkness and people were all complaining how we couldn't see the line or the ropes. I feel organic whenever I walk into a Trader Joe's! It's good to know that I can put my faith with Trader Joe's that everything I buy is somewhat good for the community, somewhat good for the environment and that they are making a change every time I spend my hard earned dollar! Well, that's the goal at least! I did noticed that most of what they sell here comes from someplace far away other than the US. Maybe that is one way of passing big savings to me. I couldn't help myself getting lost at their wine selections especially with their international lists that goes on and on. What an amazing treat! They definitely have an awesome Merlot selections to boot! In addition, I also really like their fresh garden salad and their dirt cheap cranberries and nuts and fresh fruits when I get all spiffy and liberated and super motivated to cook dinner! I also come here to buy their Tea Tree shampoo which by the way - make your scalp tingle and feel minty fresh! It's hard to have a bad experience at any Trader Joe's or get lost since they all look alike - well most of them with the exception of the one in Indiana or was it in Wisconsin when I asked where's the cheese was? This San Mateo location is small but very friendly and very knowledgeable staff who are always ready to help you at hand. So sad to give this TJs a bad review. It's always been my go to as it's easily accessible from the freeway and its so close to my house. I drop by every week. Though it can get packed and the selection isn't the greatest, I've still enjoyed shopping here. Unfortunately, I had the absolute worse experience today. I brought my cranky toddler around, my bad, but TJs is usually well known for being family friendly. I dropped yogurt in the cart where my daughter was sitting and I hear her going YUMmmmm! I look down and see that she is using her finger to consume the yogurt. I started getting a bit distressed realizing that her fingers are dirty from touching the cart so naturally, I went by the samples station to ask for a utensil(ANY utensil) at this point. It's too late, already opened. It's not like I wasn't planning to pay for it. Its a 6 pack and I never disconnected it. I asked Elizabeth, the samples lady for a utensil as I stared RIGHT at it. She was busy with refilling the coffee, totally fine. Tell me to wait or I can reach it on my own, not a big deal. Then she looks right at me in the rudest and condescending FAKEST way and goes 'you can get it out front'. Lady. No SHIT. I have my toddler licking her dirty fingers and a cart full of groceries.. youre telling me to run up to the front, leave my cart in the unpaid section and get a damn spoon?!? So I ask again.. 'well its right next to your hand and my toddler is already going at it, can you please help me out? Her response: 'I said you can get it out front' Honey. That coffee you making... chug, you effing need it. Prozac. Alcohol. Whatever girl. I told the cashier who was honestly not shocked, she just said her manager is over there and 'wow she said that?' Honestly... I should have made a scene.. a cup full of spoons and you can't even hand me one. The manager didn't seem to really care either but said he will talk to her. My main beef with the chain is not the people, but the product. I don't normally shop there but my wife has a few items she gets there. I purchased a bag of yellow onions. Got home and cut one in half only to find that it was moldy on the outside and dry on the inside. And I was reminded that overall, ALL of Trader Joes items are of mediocre or inferior quality. Fruits, vegetables, cheese, dry goods, everything I try seems to have a better equivalent from a different store. If you like the lower prices, fine, but if you care about the quality of the food you ingest, you are better off shopping elsewhere. But even at Safeway or other discount stores you can find better quality. Eat better. read more

The first TJ's I visited was over 10 years ago in Daly City. There wasn't anything great, so I didn't go back. Three years ago, a friend dragged me to the one in Millbrae. Okay, tons of frozen food... yippee? I think not. This past weekend I went to the Trader Joe's in San Mateo. Now, let me tell you why I rate this store as "okay" and I'm not crazy about it, like the rest of the folks who've reviewed it. 1) What is up with the decor?? It feels like I'm at a country store in Alaska. I don't think I'm a snoot, but no...seriously. What is this? Knotts Berry Farm? The Country Bear Jamboree? Are you serious? Do people actually find this quaint and cute? Okay, whatever. 2) What's there to buy? Um, granola...canned food...frozen food...health food. Oh, snap! What am I doing in here? 3) Why is this place soooooo crowded? Why are there so many people shopping in this rinky dink store? Oh my god, I am getting so claustrophobic. *People. standing. too. close. i'm. gonna. vomit.* 4) The lines are hideous! Here in my basket, I'm ashamed to say, berries and granola (yeah, what the hell is up with that), and the line... 15+ minute wait. FIFTEEN MINUTE WAIT FOR BERRIES and GRANOLA??? Oh my, god. =( 5) The counter doesn't have a conveyor belt? *gasp!* -- This is so 1970's! I heard this store is extremely profitable...and no conveyor belt? *tear* On a positive note, most the staff was friendly. Okay, so there was this big guy stocking chips and I was behind him saying "Excuse me...excuse me...do you know where...excuse me...hello?" I figured he must be deaf, so I just moved on to search for the item by myself. Why not one or two stars?
