There are also very good Middle Eastern and Persian food items to buy that are not sold at a regular grocery store. Pirooz Market also carries a wide selection of different food items, including speciality Persian ice cream, to a variety of Persian deserts and sweets, to different types of Middle Eastern breads, basmati rices, and a large variety of other items to choose from. Well, their marvelous Persian food is no more. Yep, they're not serving any warm food, only a few refrigerated homemade options. The lady at the front counter was very nice. But I can't say the store really is. If comparing it to any of the Persian Markets we have in LA, well, it cannot be compared to. If so, I'd have to say the worst. * no fresh produce * it's not a bakery, but they have packages of breads * small, and really, just the basics. * Many items aren't priced, so you have to ask...don't like. Plus, the awning out front of the store, good God, is in great need of replacing. It looks awful! For me, only if in need do I come here. read more

This is an excellent market that is well stocked with a diverse selection of Iranian food ingredients and delicious bread (sangak and lavash) and various other items (spices, teas, refrigerated items, Iranian ice cream, so many other delicious things!) Not only do they have a huge selection of persian treats, wonderful sangak, toot, lavashak, and all the spices you could hope for, but the owner is so nice and friendly! I've been recently into persian cooking and when I come to buy frozen barberries or sabz, he offers tips on how to cook it! Really love the cozy vibe. He also directs me to fresh bread if they've just had a delivery and is happy to offer opinions if there are several brands to choose from. I really like the added touch of having fliers available about various persian culture events in the area. It's way more than a grocery store, it's a cultural experience. Great kebab spot in the Peninsula. If you've ever been to Rose International Market in Mountain View (closed for most of 2016 I think), then you know what to expect. The chicken is juicy and tender, the koobideh is a tasty blend of lamb and beef, and the chenjeh is a chewier beef. Come with a friend and try multiple kebabs. The seating area is behind the market, under a tent. It's quaint and a nice change of pace from the overcrowded San Mateo dining scene. Service is excellent. read more

This is a hidden gem in San Mateo! Upon entering (if you don't walk right past it): Tucked behind two thin isles is a deli counter and a menu with about 8 Persian grill items. Despite this humble appearance, the food is amazing. I've repeatedly ordered the Kabob Koobideh plate and sandwiches. The meat is tender and tart and not oozing with saturated fat, even when cold. My coworker said the chicken is amazing, but it requires a 20 minute wait. Hoping to try it soon. Every time I introduce someone to this place, they also fall in love. You can either take food to go or eat in the back, which resembles someones backyard--white plastic chairs and checkered table cloth and all--with the added bonus of cable on a CRT. The man who runs this shop is very kind and always grateful for your business. He grills everything as you watch. Props to him! And as an added bonus, food is really affordable. It's rare to be able to buy a filling lunch in San Mateo for under $10 that isn't a sandwich. Fan! read more

I came here during the shelter at home with my Persian friend and she was very happy with their selection. She was able to find everything we needed to make khoreshte bademjoon (?). We also had sangkak for breakfast with authentic feta cheese and tea (according to her). The shop is a bit small, but their selection of different spices and other Persian ingredients seemed plentiful. They don't have a huge selection of fresh produce so I would recommend going elsewhere for that. I've seen previous posts that they sell warm food, however we didn't see that when we arrived. I definitely would come here when I want attempt to make more persian food. We got lucky with parking and were able to snag a street spot in front, however if parking is an issue and you know you'll be quick I would recommend parking across at safeway and walking across. They accept all major credit cards (I don't believe there is minimum). Bonus is the owner (?) or whoever helped us at the register was extremely helpful and nice! read more

We just had lunch catered by the newly opened Pirooz Market. It's a Persian grocery store and they also do prepared food. It's definitely a step up from some of the desiccated kabobs you get at other local places. We had the chicken kabobs, nice grill flavor and moist! Also tried the koobideh kabobs which are similar to a beef seekh kabob. The seasoned and ground meat was formed into kabobs around skewers and not dried out either (do you see a theme here?). Charred, roasted tomatoes, white rice, shirazi salad (onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs in a vinaigrette), and the crispy rice from the bottom of the pot. The gentleman manning the shop also recommended that we serve our lunch with Persian basil (green, with a lemon flavor), and the most creamy, delicious Abali brand lebni yogurt sauce (really excellent). Everything was carefully prepared, tasty, and high quality. I'll return to check out some of the other offerings at Pirooz. read more

Seriously a hidden gem! I am a sucker for middle eastern food and with the food not being a perfect 5 stars- I would maybe rate it 4 stars. the gentleman who owns this store is a complete sweetheart. He truly thanks each customer such a warm "thank you for your business/purchase" and it just means a lot. The food is made to order. I've tried both chicken breast kabob and ground beef or lamb (?) kabob and both tastes pretty good a little dry but still flavorful! I also order a side of Persian rice & grilled tomato and were both excellent. Also picked up some Baklava which was delish! My starving friend and I were wandering around looking for something to eat and we stumbled upon this little Mediterranean market. We figured we'd give it a try. Upon entering we could smell the aroma spices and delicious food cooking. Me and my friend are Asian so I was sort of expecting a few weird looks, but the man working there was very pleasant and considerate.. especially considering he had to run back and forth between several other customers. This is an awesome little hidden gem Mediterranean / Persian shop. Not only do they have groceries, but they also make food to go or even to eat out back on the patio next to where they bbq the food. This guy is great, he makes it right in front of you and is very courteous and gracious. I asked and they said "oh we used to have food but now we cater only". So don't be fooled by the pictures. They don't serve food. Disappointing. read more

Whenever I crave Persian food, I go to PIROOZ MARKET. It's like coming home and I am greeted as an old friend. The food is great. The owner already knows what I like-Persian rice with koobideh and filet minion kabobs with grilled tomato and onion. He cooks everything as you wait so it's almost like homemade. After lunch I shop for Sadaf frozen Persian dinners, lavash bread, spices, Persian cookies and ice-cream to take home. If you want to have delicious quick lunch, buy Persian food or just try Persian ice-cream, stop by Pirooz market. Don't be put off by the small space with very few tables on the patio behind the store or the lack of elegance. I had the koobideh kabob here, two skewers with rice. Unlucky for me, I wanted to get joojeh (chicken thigh) but it was still being prepared. The koobideh was juicy and had a good taste to it. Definitely want to go back and try the joojeh kabob. If you like Persian food, this is a great place to stop by for lunch or order to go, it's reasonable price, I paid $11 for a drink, rice, two skewers... Usually other places it's like $14-20.
