Job was to replace light that was out on hood over stove. Had to wait for technician to get the correct part. When attempting to change the light, caused a short in the electrical system. Was told that the part used was too powerful and would call the next day with the correct part. I already paid for their services. Junior Waite is a horrendous compulsive liar, scammer, and manchild; on top of that, his poor communication skills are somehow even worse. On top of that, he is a complete liar. Don't be fooled by his five-star reviews--most of them appear to be fake. He visited multiple times to fix my washing machine but never fully resolved the issue. The final straw was when it broke down yet again. Junior told me it needed a valve costing $250, which I paid him for. A week went by with no word from him. When I finally reached him, he claimed he had to do an "inventory check" and would call back in an hour--but three hours later, there was still no response. I called him again, and he said his employees hadn't finished the inventory check and that he'd keep me updated. Four more hours passed with no update. I ended up calling him for the third time that day, and he promised to come the next morning at 10 a.m. to fix the machine. Unsurprisingly, he never showed up and then blocked my number. So he just scammed me out. Junior is, without question, the most unreliable person I've ever dealt with, and his compulsive lying makes it feel like you're constantly chasing after a five-year-old to get their homework done. read more

Junior of Trades Mechanical showed up several hours late the first day to fix my Maytag refrigerator who's freezer had ice accumulating on its floor even though I have no water connected to my refrigerator. Although it appeared to be fixed, the next morning the ice was back and I called him again. He was unable to come to my house until late the next night. Once again it seemed to be fixed and this held for about a week and then I started accumulating ice on the bottom of my freezer again. I called Junior and he said he would come back the day after and I haven't heard from him since, totally blew me off. I would not recommend him under any circumstances. They confirmed they have ordered the part via text next day but I can't get hold of anyone to check the process for a week. Nobody replied to my text messages. Called millions times. Was able to get hold of a guy two times on the phone and both times he said he'll call me back shortly but he never did. Kept calling and talked to a lady who said she'll check the status and get back to me but of course she didn't. I doubt they ordered the part at all. He came back and replace the motor but just after one day the dryer stopped working again and then he came a third time and said it is because of the buttons and he said he ordered another piece with with no cost and that he would come back after a couple of days to fix the dryer. Now it is been two weeks and we didn't hear from him. We paid $460 in total and still our dryer is not working. Very happy to be writing this review after having hired Junior 3 times for various appliances, both at work and at home over the course of the past few years. Oven: Our built-in convection oven stopped working because the heat melted the wires inside, we ordered the main harness that he told me get and he came and fixed it expeditiously and it worked until they decided to upgrade to new ovens at work. Refrigerator: 11 year old Maytag refrigerator water supply stopped dispensing water, it never gave us a problem before. The diagnostic was $80-90 if we didn't repair it, the repair would be $320, and a new fridge ran about $1,300. My super felt it was a bit expensive to fix but to me it saved a refrigerator from going into the landfill. I told him it's a little broken, we can fix it, we shouldn't just throw it out; I mean he's a little broken, but we don't throw him out. So we got it fixed, Junior and his associate were in and out without wasting anytime, the valve needed to be replaced and he flushed the system. The filter in there wasn't scheduled to be changed for 3 more months, so I left it but a few days after the repair, the water dispenser began making funny noises like air was trapped in there and it was choking. I called Junior and he said sometimes when the system is flushed out, a lot of stuff gets stuck in the filter, and he suggested changing it and recommended using original Maytag filters (which we had), it solved the problem immediately, been working strong since, maybe we can squeeze another 11 years out of it! Washing Machine: My 29 year old Whirlpool washing machine from 1990 stopped agitating properly, he knew exactly what was wrong with it, and I had hardly walked upstairs and sat down in my apartment before he called me back to the basement to tell me it was fixed, it was an issue with the dog ears. He said he's rebuilt these before and they are incredible machines and last 30 years. We've never had to call service on this machine so it was definitely worth the fix. All the new machines are electronic and have fancy new tech but the old school mechanical ones are less likely to fail. I had a roommate once that commented about how clean her clothes got in my washer, didn't know I had it so good! He's very pleasant and easy going, has been on time and knows what he's doing in my experience. Also takes credit cards! read more

Our refrigerator stopped being cold for the second time in 18 months. It had fixed itself in 2 days the first time, but not the second so we called Trades Mechanical. Junior came the next day, but while waiting for him my husband too the does if the fridge and unplugged it. Since Junior was unable to properly diagnose it, he charged a consult fee for his time and said to call back if/when it stopped working again. Look and behold, 5 days later we had a warm fridge. Junior came back, diagnosed and fixed the fridge in 2 hours, and since he had just been there but couldn't do much, her credited what we already paid to our bill. Junior has been getting me out of jams for years. Having a freezer or oven or washing machine break down stinks - and every time something like this happens, I call Junior. He's busy, which is good, so sometimes I have to bug him a little... but he invariably comes through. He's honest, super cool, highly efficient and effective, and his prices are fair. The initial consult was great -- came out the same day as we called, figured out what the problem was, and put a fix in place. Our washer's belt had fallen off. After the fix, the washer was making a really loud noise that wasn't typical so we called Junior back to get him to come out to look at it. Then things got less than great. It took nearly a week for him to prioritize coming back to look, once just never showing up for an appointment we'd made. When he finally came back, he said our belt was stretched and we needed a new one. A few weeks passed where we were texting back and forth and he kept canceling appointments every few days. Finally he came back with the part and replaced it, and everything is back to normal. But the hassle of getting the appointment and having him come back was a bit much and we may not use Trades Mechanical again despite how nice Junior was. read more

Our washer stopped working on us days before one of my sons was going back to school full time and we had like 4 loads of laundry. Junior texted us when he was on his way and responded to the call quickly on a Saturday afternoon. He came in with the correct part to fix the washer and immediately got to work. More than once, Trades Mechanical has completely saved the day when it comes to our appliances. Most recently our washing machine was leaking all over the place and Junior (owner of TM and the nicest repairman EVER) came over and in a very short time had it up and running. TM has also fixed our dryer, our refrigerator, and probably our dishwasher too (all GE Profile, btw.) Just when we think we are ready for a trip to PC Richard or Best Buy, Junior comes to our home and for a very reasonable price, always saves us from having to replace our appliances. And if for some reason, your appliance is beyond repair, he will tell you what to brands to buy (definitely not GE Profile) to buy so you can avoid a service call from him in the future! read more

I'm not sure if I called the same people that everyone glowing about this shop called. I called for dryer repair. The guy came in to check out the situation. He told me "I'll give you a rate on Monday," and then he calls me Wednesday with a higher estimate. I told him come in Sunday. He never shows up and never told me that he wasn't able to get the part he needed. He apologizes and then tells me Monday he will call me to tell me if he got the part. It is 5 days later, no call. They are unprofessional. They are not cordial. And worst, they took $60 just to diagnose the problem that he clearly isn't sold on. He doesn't know what's wrong with my machine hence why he isn't calling me back or giving me my money back. Unprofessional, and apathetic. Do not waste your time with them. read more

I used the services of Trades Mechanical for my washer. It accumulated in the water even when turned off -- indication that a valve was shot. The repairman came on a Sunday, a big plus. He replaced the electromechanical valve, which he had brought with him, but in the process he damaged the rubber connector between valve a washer. He told me it was his fault, and that the part would arrive by Tuesday and that I would be called. I did not receive a call back. I did call the firm and was told the part would arrived on Wednesday and that I would be called back. I wasn't, so I called again. Another representative answered and told me the part would arrive in seven days, because it "had to be made to order". This answer was completely unbelievable because a) the washer is a very common Whirlpool model (rebranded by Kenmore), b) if it had to be made to order, it would have taken *way* more than 7 days. Upon my objections, I was told that that they would look into it, and that the part would arrive either Friday or Monday. As usual, I did not receive a call on Friday, but I managed to get it fixed by Saturday. Summing up, my gripes with this firm are two. First: I understand the repairman made a mistake. It can happen. However, the customer care following this mistake was truly unprofessional and bordering on the dishonest (part arriving Tuesday, then Wednesday, then after a week, then Friday... at least, get your story straight!). Secondly, at the end of the service I was told that Trades Mechanical has an "incentive program": write a positive review on Yelp, Google etc. and you will get a 30% discount on future services. Now, ALL sites explicitly ask NOT to do this. For example, Yelp says "Please don't review this business if you received a freebie for writing this review, or if you're connected in any way to the owner or the employees". This is what Trades Mechanical did, and this IS certainly dishonest. It explains the positive reviews on Yelp, which in my case led to me choosing them and receive a bad service. Even more succinctly summing up: don't use this service. ----------------------------- P.S. (after receiving the business owner reply): I did not expect a reply to my review, even less so one disputing its factual accuracy. So, for the benefit of future potential clients, here are the detailed facts: --- we did not mislead you about parts arrival *You* told me the part would arrive on Tuesday. I called on Tuesday, and was told the part would arrive on Wednesday, and I would be called back. I *wasn't* called back. So I called, and was told that the part would have to be made to order and would take 5 business days. Upon my remonstrations, I was told they would look into it, and that I would be called back. As of Thursday afternoon, I *wasn't* called back. So I called. The representative told me that she'd look into it and called me back; which she didn't. So I called again, and was told that the part would arrive Friday or Monday; they'd let me know on Friday. Of course they didn't. I called, and was told they'd check and let me know. This time they did, and set the appointment for Saturday. So, in the spirit of being constructive, my two recommendations are: 1) show integrity: i.e., when you commit to do something, do it. If you can't do something, be upfront about it and go back to point 1. 2) be proactive. If something doesn't go according to plan (e.g., for a mistake, and please note that I don't blame you for it) be sure you follow up with your client. --- to compensate for the situation we charge you $230 with no tax so you get about $50 Just so that we are clear here: I didn't make an issue about the pricing, but if we have to, a $30 discount (against the quoted $260 - which have now become $280 because you haven't charged taxes, which is wrong) is a ridiculous compensation for the waste of time and additional cost of cleaning I incurred this week. --- WE DO NAT [sic] ASK FOR 5 STAR Regarding the reviews: asking the client for a review (without specifying the outcome) is fine and legal. Offering a financial reward (30% discount for future services) is *not* fine. It is prosecuted by the FTC and it is possibly illegal. Junior is the only person you should call. We've had a couple of issues. One with our washing machine, now with our refridgerator. Junior came on short notice both times. Both times he provided a detailed very specific explanation of what needed to be repaired and why. It's helpful when technicians tell you what they are doing and when they show you how they arrived at their conclusions. That way, you know they're not just running game. I generally feel like I know if someone is trying to pull the wool over my eyes and junior doesn't do that. There's something to be said for honesty. The guy is whip smart to. He is able to quickly identify the issue and knows exactly how to solve it. Probably from the years of experience he had working for Sears. Don't believe the 5 stars. My dishwasher was not draining, Called and made appointment for two days out, and with a two hour window for them to arrive. Went home to meet the repairman today to evaluate (left an extremely busy work day to travel back across town to my apartment), two hours passed, no call, no text from the owner. Initiated a call/text myself to the owner who said his repairman needed another 45 mins to make it over... this is an hour after the window. Very weak communication, and wasted my time in the process. Severely dissapointing.. and now looking for another service. If they can't stay in simple communication and get there on time, really question their ability to do business. Super annoying experience and service. Would absolutely not recommend. read more

Awful service. While our dryer is now repaired, which we're grateful for, it was a maddening experience to get to this point. Junior was initially scheduled to come to our apartment at 8pm on a Thursday. When he hadn't yet arrived at 8:15p, I called him to check on his timing - he told me he was stuck at another appointment and would not be able to make it until 10p. He informed me that he always needs to provide 2-hour windows for appointments. That would have been nice to know when you - you know - made the appointment. While it's understandable that complications arise and appointments may take longer than expected, it's completely unacceptable to arrive 2 hours late for an appointment without any notice (I had to call him, he never called us). If it ended there, though, it wouldn't have been all that bad - 10p was only 2 hours late. When 10p came and went, I called Junior again. No answer. At that point, I had come to expect as much. I was finally able to get in contact with Junior the next morning. We scheduled another appointment for Friday between 5p-6p. As I had the day before, I left work early to meet him. And of course, both 5 and 6 came and went with no word from Junior. When I was finally able to get in touch with him, he told me he could be there by 8p. Now, apparently he requires 3 hour windows... Junior finally showed up at 8:30. The fix was quick, which was nice, but the moral of this story is to avoid TM if you can help it. Slow response times and disrespectful service. read more

The freezer fan in the refrigerator had been making loud noises for over a month--it was driving me crazy! I'm kicking myself in the behind for not calling TM Appliance Repair earlier. Junior and his assistant were in and out with the quickness, replacing the fan motor before the ice cream melted. I found TM Appliance repair because it is the service that my UWS building recommends for all the fancy appliances that come with the apartment. This week my Bosch dishwasher fizzled out. Sadly, it was on its last legs. Junior was able to see me that same day. He ordered the parts right away, got them the next day, and repaired the dishwasher with great efficiency and skill. I have complete confidence that he totally knows the repair business since he did such a terrific job. His billing was totally fair as well. Beyond that, he was a really nice guy and a pleasure to have in my apartment during the repair. We even listened to some reggae he recommended that I loved. Another great thing: he was super-cool about handling the appropriate billing to my out-of-state landlady (something which could have been a pain for me as a tenant). My only minor criticism (just to show this is an honest review) was that he was delayed a few times with traffic and solving other people's repair problem -- but honestly he more than made up for it by coming on a Sunday and not charging extra and just getting the job done perfectly in record time. (And he did call me back and explain the delays each time.) Frankly, although I hope life goes smoothly and that I don't need any appliance repairs in the near future, there's no question that he would be my first and only call. These guys were great. Our building is very rigorous about contractors and requires a Cert of Insurance before they come into the building. They were patient and quick to supply the COI and knew how to add the additional insured which almost always takes weeks with other folks. Showed up on time. Was efficient and solved the problem quickly. Cost was half of what I was quoted but other companies. I totally recommend these guys. read more

You never know if what you read on the internet is remotely true, but the flattering reviews I read definitely were. My fridge died on Wednesday morning. Died like the milk was cheese. Awesome. Wednesday night Junior was able to come by and fix it enough to tide me over (that alone was a huge help) until he could get the part I needed. I figured that would be after the weekend. Instead Junior came back Thursday night and in less than half an hour he had my fridge back up and running. Perfectly! He was terrific, left my kitchen just as found it, instead of the mess you sometimes are left with. His price seemed pretty reasonable too - I didn't call around and price the job but given the problem I had an idea of what it should be. I almost wish I had other things Junior could fix, not that I'm disappointed my oven isn't being a brat. I can't recommend Junior's work more. And he wasn't even freaked out by my boxer/pit mix's extreme happiness to see him. Most people are a little scared at first. Sometimes longer :). read more

My dishwasher was leaking water so I called Trades Mechanical based off the positive reviews here. The guy came on time and the communication was good. My dishwasher jet was out of whack and I fixed it myself before the guy came. He said that was likely the reason for the leak (so I fixed it myself) but it still had a small leak when running the dishwasher empty when he was here. He said it would go away when running with a full load. I asked if it was the gasket and he said if it continues to leak it's likely the gasket. He said he would come back to install the gasket if that was the problem. He charged $100 for his consultation. He said the gasket would be about $60 in parts and about $150 in labor but that his $100 consultation fee would count toward that when he came back. He left. I ran it with a full load a couple of days later and the dishwasher was still leaking (so I didn't actually fix it). I looked up the gasket online and it was a $20 part. I'm not sure why he thought it was $60. I ordered and installed it myself in about 5 minutes. So in the end, I paid $100 for him to come to my apartment and tell me I fixed the dishwasher (I hadn't) and would've been charged $210 to replace a gasket which I found online for $20 and installed myself in 5 minutes. read more

Called in the morning, TM was there in the afternoon. I initially thought we had an issue with both our dishwasher (leaking) and refrigerator (ice maker), but they quickly figured out that the refrigerator was the root of both problems. They replaced the water valve on the fridge and noticed that the hose connected to the ice maker was falling apart. He explained both what was wrong and why it happened before he fixed anything. Everything works perfectly now. Their prices were fair and reasonable. Included is a one year warranty on parts and 6 months on labor. I called junior this morning, before dawn on Thanksgiving Eve, when I discovered that a power outage in my building the night before fried my refrigerator's computer board. I was racing against the clock because I am hosting Thanksgiving for my family, and I had the turkey and all the other food for our celebration in the fridge getting warm. I was expecting for my 6.a.m. call to be received by an answering machine. I was surprised and delighted when Junior picked up the phone. He assessed the problem over the phone, and was in at 9:30 to affect the repair after picking up the replacement parts. The whole job was completed by 10 am.
