The Tradewinds is actually in a very peaceful and quiet neighborhood away from the bustle of restaurants in the downtown district. Plenty of hotels are right in the heart of town, and busy evenings and nights would be loud. The good: 1. Quiet location with easy stroll to town and beaches. What a wonderful area. This hotel is located just right. We could walk south into town or through the beautiful neighborhoods to gaze at the homes and estates. The route along Scenic Road gives you a great route along the beach with lots of access points. 2. Staff! I could not ask for nicer staff. They are very generous with their time and effort. They spoke with another guest about excessive middle of the night noise and we were very grateful. They were more than happy to direct us to restaurants and cafes. Nothing but praise. 3. parking on site (it's tight though). There is not a lot of parking along the street in the neighborhood. We just parked our car and left it there the whole weekend. 4. The Wifi works great. some hotels can have really crappy internet connections. Netflix and Hulu stream just fine. 5. Clean and tidy. Everything was spotless. No funky smells or mildew which can happen in a beach location. Everyone works very hard to keep the facilities well kept. The rest of the story: For my $350 or more per night, I would have preferred a few improvements 1. The bed we had in our room seemed very old. One side sloped dramatically from the center to the edge with a giant ridge in the middle. The pillowtop on the mattress was bunched up and lumpy, did not cover the entire mattress and was not so comfortable. A new basic pillowtop mattress from a discounter would not be so expensive. 2. The shower is about 4 feet tall with a detachable head. i had to hold the shower head the entire time I was in the shower. A simple wall mount at 6 feet or higher would fix this with minimal cost. Perhaps we landed in the ADA room. We should be informed of this when making the reservation if that's the case. 3. No A/C is fine, but the sliding patio door does not have a secure way to prop the door open a few inches during the day while we are out. The room builds up heat and when we get back it's rather stifling, felt like 80+ degrees, for about 30 minutes. outside temps were in the mid 60s. 4. Poor sound insulation. We could clearly hear activities in adjacent rooms, even bathroom noise and quiet puttering around in rooms above us as well as walking up and down on the stairs outside. 5. Breakfast is basically the same stuff as a holiday inn express. Not bad, just not special and not in keeping with the cost or intended atmosphere. If they just had coffee and a bit of toast, did not offer "complementary breakfast" I think it would be more in keeping with the intent of the service level here. Go to one of the several cafes, delis or restaurants in the immediate area for a better breakfast. 6. Lack of wall outlets near anyplace you might work on a laptop. read more

It's a decent layout and the guest services were good. My main gripe is the ancient matress with a pillowtop cover on top. It slept like a couch foldout bed. For the price I was expecting a better bed. Pet friendly. Parking is kinda rough if you go out for the day and return after dinner. We had to park around the corner on Sunday night. read more

I've stayed here twice and both times it was a lovely, tranquil getaway. It's a 3 minute walk from the main road of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Only cons: they frequently run out of parking, but there's parking on the street. Breakfast is cold continental. Exceeded Expectations: They not only allow dogs with a moderate pet fee, but upon confirmation they email you a list of dog-friendly restaurants in the area. My lab had a wonderful time at the beach (it's off leash, there's tons of small and large dogs playing) and visiting the town's two dog boutique shops. read more

Minus a star for proximity to shops/beach and price We really felt relaxed at the Tradewinds. It has an Asian zen ambiance. An orchid was brought to our room upon our arrival, soothing music played on the cd player as we entered our room, the fireplace was great, the balcony was great (despite the fact that we had to crook our neck to see the ocean view in our "ocean view room"), delicious chocolate covered strawberries waited for us on the table, the jetted tub and separate shower were wonderful, the breakfast was above average and brought to our room, and we could park our car here before check in and after check out. You can also get a massage in your room, highly recommended. The tranquil water feature and relaxing music made the massage even more amazing. We felt ultimately relaxed when we left. Just remember to bring your own bubble bath for the jetted tub! We thought this place was a little pricey for being 3 blocks away from the main part of Carmel. Important note: If you book an ocean view room, you cannot see the ocean from your room, you have to go out on the balcony and look between the trees and other buildings to the left to see the ocean. read more

We are here, the second of three nights while attending the yearly California Le Mans Series racing weekend. We come to Carmel every year, each time choosing a different hotel. Tradewinds sounded great online: luxurious boutique hotel with a definite Zen feeling. What we've found is: a mix up with our room. We were supposed to be in a king room but were given two queen beds instead...and no other rooms available. A front office staff that keeps thinking we're here for only two nights. And Zen? Not when you can hear every footfall in the room above. There is a very nice, European-style light breakfast, complimentary, offered each day; but for this price, there should be wine and appetizers in the afternoon as well...as is the case in many small boutique hotels where we've stayed. The room is ordinary but with a large tub shower and Aveda products. All in all, though, we'll stay elsewhere next year. read more

After reading many positive reviews, we were looking forward to our weekend at the Tradewinds Inn. However we were woken up both mornings at 6am or 7am by the person walking around in the room above us. The soundproofing at the Tradewinds is ridiculously unacceptable. The person above us wasn't even wearing shoes and we could hear every step he took and the floor creaked everytime he walked around. At $325/night for a standard room, Tradewinds is one of the most expensive hotels in Carmel. However, the noise issue and the location make it a terrible value. I would much rather find a hotel on or around Ocean for $200-$250/night and get a good night of sleep. When we complained to the front desk about the noise issue, the lady at the front desk was quite snotty and acted as if we should just put up with the noise. Upon checkout they were apologetic about the noise but by that time the damage was done. Excluding the noise and location issue, the room resembled a motel room with a few pieces of Asian art work and bamboo sticks. Definitely not worth the price! read more

BUYER BEWARE!!!!! They have a very strict cancellation policy. I recently had to cancel because of emergency surgery that caused an entire wedding to be cancelled and they would NOT make an exception to refunding my money. I didn't expect the deposit back but I did expect some consideration. I don't care how nice this place is, that is simply bad business and lousy custom service. This was something that couldn't be helped and we were devastated. Getting hit $$$$ added to the pain. No sympathy there! You won't regret staying here. Tradewinds has the personal charm and hospitality of a bed & breakfast but with more privacy. We came to Carmel for my boyfriend's golf tournament and this place was recommended to us. We searched for it online and found it, but called with rate questions and were given a better rate by phone than online. I would recommend calling them for the best rate. They're personable and friendly. We were escorted to the room, and shown how to use the fireplace with a couple other tips. They gave us a map of highlights in town. It's within a block and a half to the shopping and dining areas in town. Foodwise, they are generous. The tiny lobby had traditional hotel green apples, but also lemon water and cookies! The room had chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us, a couple chocolates, and 3 different bags of snacks: grapefruit flavored candies, mixed nuts, and pretzels. These all came in handy when we bought a bottle of wine for the room. They had wine glasses in the room, and a bottle opener, but it was weak so we had the receptionist provide a better opener. It's a windy town but the balcony was great because it gets sun and has wind barriers. The bathroom is nice because it has a shower and a tub. Good quality soaps, and a lighted magnified mirror. The silk robes were soft, comfy, and fun to wear. The breakfast pastries were really delicious. We also enjoyed the garden with the fountain and fire pit. read more

Lacks quality property management and awareness to 4 star quality and detail. Nice fire pit area but zero seating. Property has potential if properly managed and maintained. My bf and I were traveling last minute for the xmas holiday, and decided to go to Carmel. We discovered Tradewinds via Hotel Tonight, and boy am I glad we did! It was very zen, with an outdoor waterfall and meditation area. I've never been into all that stuff, but it was quite peaceful. The ladies at the front desk were very helpful and cheery. It was nice chatting with them. The room was perfectly clean with a fresh orchid flower placed in the room as we arrived. There were also two very relaxing cd's that I pretty much played on repeat during my entire stay. The actual hotel is a short walk away from the heart of Carmel. We booked this hotel last minute and it didn't cease to impress! Very close walking distance to main town area and restaurants. The front desk lady was super sweet and walked us to our room and showed us around. Once in the room we discovered white chocolate strawberries chilled and ready for us. BONUS! Especially since we were last minute bookings. A really nice small bamboo fountain in the room to add tranquility along with a nice quiet balcony and gas fireplace. Delivered breakfast to our room in the morning free of charge. Oh and don't let me forget a rockin jacuzzi tub! read more

Wow. Wow. Wow. I had a wonderful stay at this incredible Inn. The room was beautiful and spacious with little touches to make your stay even more relaxing. The staff was caring and very helpful. 3.5 stars. Tradewinds is a lovely hotel -- great decor, cool ambiance, nice bath products, yummy chocolate covered strawberries & snacks in the room (pretzels,dried apricots & 2 bottled waters.) The kimono robes in the room were really nice -- I ended up having to buy one, since they were available for sale at the front desk. They are a "dog friendly" hotel, but I really think they are actually just "dog tolerant." When I called to make a reservation, they let me go through the entire process (including giving my cc #), and they they were like "wait, what kind of dog do you have?" and I told them about my lovely border collie/lab mix, and they said "does she weigh more than 50 lbs?" and guess what? She does. They "made an exception" for us, which was nice, but seriously, I think small dogs are more likely to rip up the room than large ones. I've heard all about how crazy dog friendly Carmel is, so I was expecting our dog to receive the royal treatment, but I didn't even feel comfortable taking her into the lobby at this joint. They didn't have any pet dishes in the rooms, and that would have been a nice touch, too. I'm sure I sound so petty, but I always compare hotels to the Stanford Inn by the Sea in Mendocino, and that place wins hands down for a dog friendly (or just people friendly) establishment -- they have everything you could possibly ask for and more. Anyway... The fridge in the room was actually just a cooler -- we found this out when we tried to put some champagne inside to chill, and then we had to run out and buy another bottle that was already cold. The free breakfast was not pastries from a local bakery unless that local bakery goes by the name of Costco -- I thought they could do better on that front. I really did think Tradewinds was nice, but I might try somewhere else next time I'm planning a dog getaway. read more

My wife and I recently stayed here. We had won a two night stay at a local fund raiser. We paid an extra $75 to get an ocean view. We were very happy with the room . The check in was quick and easy, and there was a young man there to help us up the stairs with our bags. The room was clean and neat. We had a fireplace and balcony with the room. There is no A/C so if it got hot in Carmel you might a little uncomfortable in the room. The normal rate I understand is around $400 per night. They had a nice breakfast bar in the morning providing fruit, pastries, cereals, juices, and coffee. It was a nice experience overall. read more

Can't recommend this hotel enough. My husband and I were visiting Carmel for the "NorCal Poodle Rescue Fundraiser." They called us the night before to "Thank" us for making a reservation with them, and they were looking forward to our visit. They noted that we had not stayed with them before and gave us directiions to their Hotel. Who ever does that? They also wanted us to know that check in was at 3 PM, but if we decided to come early, we were welcome to park our car at the hotel and just walk around. The Hotel was LOVELY. Very clean and updated with simple by elegant furnishing. We highly recommend this hotel and will come back again next year. read more

After being on the road for hours, we were eager to get to the inn, only to find that they had overbooked us. We booked the hotel through Orbitz, however, neither Orbitz or the Inn contacted us regarding the overbooking. They blamed the situation on each other, which was extremely annoying. With no other hotels available, the proprietor of the hotel offered us her condo she rents out but found that it was a 1bedroom next to her garage, in addition, we were charged more than the cost of the room at tradewinds. The place was nice but it was away from town with no working tv. So we opted to check out a day early and drove back home. read more

Because of damage to our house and property caused by the Soberanes Fire in Big Sur, we have been living at Tradewinds for the past 19 days. I can not say enough good things about this place and especially the staff. They have been so helpful (that is an understatement to say the least) to us during a difficult and stressful period. They are friendly, professional and personable. I saw them treat every guest this way. They are simply the best. We have stayed in 3 different rooms and each was absolutely great. The beds are extremely comfortable and the linens on them are so soft. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and so clean. I am firefighter and it was so great after working on the fire or at the station during the day to come back and spend the night here. The wifi was great, not some wimpy feed that crawls in the evenings. The complimentary breakfast was perfect, lots of fresh fruit and healthy food. I have stayed at many hotels over the years, from The Plaza in NYC to mom and pop cottages in central Minnesota. Tradewinds stands with the best of them. I can not recommend this place enough. read more

Absolutely LOVED this place. The rooms were clean, quiet and the beds where awesome! Everyone I encountered was wonderful. Very friendly and offered great suggestions for dining and activities. The Breakfast was exactly what I wanted. There was multiple juices, tea, milk, hot coco, water and coffee. Oatmeal, yogurt, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, Danishes, muffins, bagels and breads. Located in a quiet area within walking distance of everything including the Beach. However, just remember when you walk down you are going to have to walk back UP. :) There is a really good Bakery maybe a block down the hill that serves Lunch and is really good. read more

We chose this place because of the reported view. It is one of the hotels in walking distance of the town with a view. Beautiful room and grounds with little alcoves. One of the highlights was the grounds' cat! We debated three to four stars because for the price we expected more. The goods - nice balcony, cookies, and fireplace. The disappointing - They have a continental breakfast and for the price you expect more. Other places purporting to be as nice as this have a cheese and wine hour. Also, for this price you would expect them to replace the soaps each day but what you get is what you get. Good thing we didn't use up the bars on the first night. (They do have liquid soap in a dispenser.) and the view...well, the water is pretty far off. But it's quiet and private. read more

Nice location and ambiance but no air conditioning and we arrived during a heat wave in October!! So for the room rate we paid for 2 rooms for 2 nights, we were disappointed!! We asked for an extra fan but were told there was none. Only one fan per room and ours did not work properly. Also there is no elevator so dragging your heavy suitcases up 3 flights & down again when leaving was not appealing. Basically average room for the money! read more

The service was good. The room was clean. The decor was pleasant (at most). I suppose I would have rated them higher if the room wasn't so damn EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT WE GOT! For the amount of money we dropped, we expected a luxury hotel with all the amenities. Tradewinds was a little more than a nicely dressed up MOTEL. That's right. I said it. A MOTEL. (a nicely dressed up one though). I agree with one of the reviewers that the soundproofing was not that great. We, too, heard our upstairs neighbors stomping around. The hotel's website makes this place look like a little oasis in the middle of Carmel. Not so! I will say that our room looked similar to the one pictured on their site but the rest was a little misleading. The modern, Asian-inspired decor is a nice change from the country cottage look you'll find in other hotels around Carmel. Keeping with the Asian theme, you get kimonos instead of bathrobes, and a fresh orchid at check-in. The Enya, or whatever, playing from Tradewinds' mix CD is goofy and over the top, but after much debate--I approve. The jetted one-and-a-half person tub and fireplace were also real nice and got extended play. The room is pretty, Architectural Digest blah, blah, blah, just as advertised on the web. But certain amenities are missing: like no in-room microwave, refrigerator, or premium channels on the TV. I have basic cable at home, so not having HBO available made me feel like I was sitting in my apartment instead of on vacation. And, I had the same noisy experience as other reviewers: I could hear every footstep the people upstairs made. I intended to relax and sleep in, but was consistently woken up by the creaking floors. I wondered, why didn't the architects fix that? At least breakfast was good: fresh fruit, cottage cheese, yogurt, granola, and toasted bagels with cream cheese. I reserved this hotel for a long weekend with my special someone, and I immediately began to judge the value of our stay. Service was adequate. Location--not a factor since everything in Carmel is walking distance. Decor was a step up from what we're used to. Not too much of a splurge, considering all hotels in Carmel are pricey. But didn't sleep very well. Let's call it a wash. I would make sure I reserve the top floor next time. read more

Would not recommend this hotel to anyone to stay at if you are under the age of 30 and honestly still don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone! They have no pool/hot tube and really offer nothing at hotel for you to do. They have one fire pit they light and then turn off around 10PM when the office closes even in July on a Thursday. Also extremely rude staff. Sitting at breakfast and cleaning lady asks "excuses me, room number?"with 4 other tables of people in the breakfast room and only asked me probably because im 22 but just over all offended by entire hotel and also very late check in of 3PM AND early check out so save your money and stay somewhere else in Carmel. This place is not worth the $$ or the hype. read more

This is a great place to come for a romantic getaway. 5 star treatment at a modest price. From the time you get out of your car you are treated like a preferred guest. What makes the experience so wonderful is all the small things along the way. ie, great room that is set in a Japanese theme. Soothing music on your arrival with the sound of quiet brook in your room. You will then notice a personalized note in your room thanking you for staying along with fresh chocolate strawberries and chocolate waiting for you. The Tradewinds has an eye for detail and nothing goes unnoticed. The rooms and grounds are clean. I mean 5 star clean. No dust balls in the corners. My husband and I stayed here for two nights and we were so excited for our trip. This place almost ruined it. The beds are incredibly uncomfortable. The "hot breakfast" became a joke. The toast you make your self is the only thing hot about it. Our room overlooked someone else's roof and bathroom windows. The walls are paper thin and we could actually hear people downstairs having breakfast while laying in bed. The front desk lady was not nice, she was rude and unnecessarily pompous. She made some kid show us to our room because she said we wouldn't be able to figure out the fireplace by ourselves. Lucky for us he knew how to work that light switch. The room itself wasn't bad per say. But for sure NOT luxury and NOT worth the money. Agree with someone else that said it is a pretentious Motel 6! At first, when I saw the exterior of what I booked for over $300 per night, I was disappointed to say the least, as the "luxury hotel" turned out to be nothing more than a beefed-up mid-50's motel! Inside, however, was a different story - whoever was decorating it did an amazing job of transforming the formerly ugly structure into an oasis of peace and tasteful simplicity! I loved the omnipresent sound of falling water, handwritten greeting, flowers and strawberries in the room. Will be back soon! read more
