I feel so fit, so strong and so confident! Huge shoutout to Jodi the owner and jazzercise instructor - she is one badass woman. Recalling my first class, I will say the first class is surprisingly intimidating, and I think that's normal. Everyone will feel like a fish out of water at first, but JUST KEEP GOING. There will be a point where you start to memorize the dance moves (the instructors will repeat the same dance moves in their songs), and pretty soon you will be in-sync, gliding across the room with all the other women like one big drill team. For anyone wondering what jazzercise is, the best way I can explain it is: think of Zumba & Pilates in one, and yes! We do use weights/mats. We start with stretching, move on to cardio/dance to get the heart rate up, then legs, then arms, then abs. Our classes will have every part of your body on fire. And for reference, I am a 26F athlete, and this class kicks my ass. Also, Jazzercise is equally as challenging as it is FUN. I've never had so much fun working out. If you're curious, the first class is free so no harm done! Give it a try and we'll see you there!

The classes are fun, high energy, and a great combination of cardio and strength training. I leave every class feeling stronger and more energized. What I appreciate most is how welcoming the environment is. The instructors do a great job motivating everyone while still making the class feel supportive and encouraging. Whether you're new to fitness or have been working out for years, you can go at your own pace and still get a great workout. I also love that the workouts change often, so it never gets boring. The mix of music, movement, and strength training makes the time go by quickly. If you're looking for a workout that is effective, positive, and actually fun to attend, I highly recommend Jazzercise with Jodie and all of the amazing instructors.

Personal training at this gym is high pressure sales. DO NOT ENGAGE…read more The personal trainer I had was lovely but she is no longer with the company. She left when my personal training account was frozen due to financial hardship, and management never reached out about her departure... but they were more than happy to start charging me again for services they never intended to schedule, since it was so hard to get ahold of the trainers. They pressured me into freezes over cancellation to try and get every last dime. Costs over $700 to cancel if you sign onto a contract, which will protect them and not you. It's a misleading and shady business, and you're better off doing personal training literally anywhere else.

I pay a monthly payment for myself and $20 to bring teen boy; however, I also brought in myself and we were not allowed to admit inside the gym. After a long discussion, a front desk explained only one guess can be allowed in so we understand but there was not a sorry word from the rep. We were so disappointed how we were treated so we left the facility. Why we were not allowed in for one time we had to drive back home so SAD. I have gone to this gym since the first day it opened its door and treated this way. Very bad customer service. Need to look into 24 Fitness as they give free guess without paying any fee.

I joined in February and love this place. I've always hated gyms because of their heteronormativity…read moreand it's nice to work out in a space that feels safe for all. This is the only gym where I've been consistent and stayed consistent and in the four months I've been a member I've seen noticeable improvements in my musculature, core strength and stamina. I go for the classes. If you pay for the monthly membership all classes are included. I try to hit three a week. I hope to attend more open gym times in the future but for right now the evening classes work with my schedule. There's a couple things I could nitpick. I wish they were open all day on Saturday and Sunday. It makes more sense to be open half days on a weekday for those of us who work 9-5s. I think the powerlifting class should be limited to no more than 6 - 8 people given the equipment limitations. But overall I'm not here to be at the most resourced or state of the art gym. Place is important and I need to workout publicly in a space that's affirming and that's what I've found here. The trainers are great. Eloise is fantastic. She takes you seriously and provides good critique on form while also challenging you to improve. She has great bedside manner and I'm always happy to take her classes even if they kick my ass sometimes. Felicia is also fantastic and plays great music and I appreciate Kristen's chill energy during powerlifting. I love the get ups and hinges class most, followed by kettlebell 7. The conditioning class is sadistic and occasionally I'll go to test my progress. Last time one of the exercises included doing 1000 jump ropes. I was like oh so you hate us hate us but I also felt accomplished by rising to the challenge. I moved to Portland about 9 months ago and didn't think it would be as hard as it has been to find community but EKC has been a welcoming part of my weekly routine that has made me feel connected to my community. It's two blocks from my house and for the first time in my life actually enjoy working out. It's not a cheap gym by any means but it's not budget breaking. They have a flexible pricing scheme for income limited folks. They're always making little improvements here and there including adding more signage and painting and I appreciate their desire to revise and improve on themselves as I am too. Love this place. Can't say enough good things. Almost don't want more people to come because I like the class sizes as they are but I also want to support this place that's made me feel very welcomed.

The trainers are knowledgeable, attentive, and generous with their time and instruction. Eloise has already offered me several corrections / adjustments that have improved my experience. (Felecia and Tess, too!) While rigorous, each class and program accommodates multiple levels of experience and fitness. Above all, I have been impressed by the welcoming and supportive atmosphere/culture, deepened and sustained by EKC's members. Here, one can truly come as they are. I feel motivated and inspired and look forward to my next workout at/with EKC.

I started training with Melanie November of 2016. After one of previous personal trainers left…read moreBakar Fitness I tried a few people before finding Melanie. Melanie's profile caught my eye on the website of Bakar fitness. I have always been on the petite side naturally and one of my goals was to be able to gain muscle and be strong. I never thought it was possible for me to be very strong being a 5'3 and naturally skinny person. Melanie definitely proved me wrong! My proudest moment was when I was able to deadlift 185lbs (I was myself 107lbs). While the number of pounds gained/lost definitely shows progress and reflects great milestones in one's personal health journey, training with Melanie has helped me look at health beyond numbers. Training with Melanie has had cascading positive effects in my life. I have become more disciplined when it comes to my health which in turn has improved my diet, reduced my anxiety, helped with my insomnia. Melanie is definitely unique in her approach. I have had several trainers where training means 1 hour of working out with them every week. Melanie is not your average trainer. She cares deeply about her clients and goes above and beyond for them. Outside of our 1 hour of training, to give an example of how Melanie came through as a coach for me - She gave me a nutritional program and kept me accountable. I broke my wrist from a bike ride; Mel helped me train my lower body in isolation for multiple months which helped me stay healthy physically and emotionally. I also had a shoulder surgery from a sports injury. I experienced a lot of atrophy and stiffness after the surgery. Melanie has supported me over the last 2 years to build back my strength and range of motion. I can do pull ups again! I have gained a lot of strength and muscle with her programs. Melanie is not a trainer that just cares about the number of pounds dropped/gained or to just get you high numbers for squats or deadlifts. She is very cognizant of injuries, she puts a lot of focus on conditioning and stretching and taking care of your body like it is a temple. She is extremely educated about anatomy. These qualities differentiates Melanie's programs from just another personal training experience. People often think having a personal trainer is not worth the money. Why pay someone when you can google exercises/programs. Having done my share of googling programs and investing in a personal trainer like Melanie, I can definitely say I am better off with Melanie. I look at health differently now and investing in having an expert like Melanie has definitely been the right choice and the returns have been more than worth it.

She is knowledgeable, non judgmental, kind and tailors the training for me! She always takes into account my aches , pains, post surgical condition, schedule, events, nutrition - you name it - Coach Melanie has always made adjustments that help me in my journey. I am so impressed by her! I met Coach Melanie at the UCSF Bakar Fitness Center when I barely exercised after a cervical spine surgery years ago. I was having back and nerve pain and I hadn't done a triathlon or run in eons, couldn't do a push-up and didn't exercise regularly. After working with Coach Melanie I strength train consistently ( super important for us all!), completed the sprint distance Honolulu triathlon, a couple of 10k's and few metric century rides and am on my way to more! My goal is to one day complete the iron- person distance tri and if anyone can help me get there it's Coach Melanie. We talk over nutrition I even meal prep now - not something I did before. I've had a few trainers over the years but Coach Melanie is the absolute best! I also really respect her values and am impressed by her own health, wellness and fitness journey. She's a fantastic person! Start training with Coach Melanie now to progress in your journey - no matter your level. You'll not regret it
