Went here for lunch a few week's ago and had the lunch menu steak sandwich. Incredibly tasty and filling. The only slight downside would be that the meat was a bit rare for my liking and they didn't ask when they took my order so I forgot to ask for medium-well, but it was very good quality so I didn't mind too much. Service was fine, it was fairly empty so we had no issue getting served or getting the bill. Would definitely go again, though might need to save up for an evening meal here! read more

Not very impressed, if I judge this place by the quality of its dishes more than the fancy artwork the fuels the hype. I went for the sirloin and got a sirloin, feeling lonely, on a plate...but far far away from the quality I found in other meat restaurants. Place is huge, and those alcoves are cool for groups, but yeah...attention to details should be key, even more importantly when it comes to the dishes themselves. Very cool space in a fun neighborhood. Cock and bull sculpture is a wonderful centerpiece in this restaurant. I split the big ribeye with a colleague, it was excellent. We all had Yorkshire pudding and chicken livers. That was delightful. I wish they had a better beer selection but the food was very good, the service was solid and the space is great. Three nights ago I visited Mark Hix's latest restaurant, The Tramshed, which opened on 23rd May in Shoreditch. It was buzzing as I entered, a large warehouse-esque space with double volume walls crowned with a pitched green roof. Hix himself explained: "I just wanted it to be very, very simple ... The expanse of this space really lent itself to simple dining." Exactly. It's that successful recipe of mixing design and food, a polygamous marriage between architecture, creativity and simplicity in taste (using both meanings of the word). The restaurant orchestrates a great vibe in this way, not to mention with the added quirkiness of the large Damien Hirst sculpture 'Cock and Bull' (a cow and cockerel preserved in a steel and glass tank of formaldehyde) that watches over diners from its 4 metre high pedestal at the centre of the room. The menu really is simple: either steak or chicken. There are also three starters, which come together at £8 per head. We opted to try these: Yorkshire Pudding with Whipped Chicken Livers, Ham Hock with Peas and Goat's Curd with Beetroot Puré and Walnuts. The Whipped Chicken Livers was a delicious mousse, like a smooth and velvety pâté infused with flavour. The Yorkshire Pudding would have been better heated, instead it was cold and spongy without a tantalising crisp to its golden exterior. The Ham Hock was a great little dish, with the meat being tender and complimenting its bed of green peas mixed with mustard. The Goat's Curd was thick and creamy, but the beetroot beneath it was merely a pool of cold soup. Its texture was too thin, meaning the third dimension of taste added by the toasted walnuts was lost in the dish, which did not hold well together. As for mains, two of us opted for the whole Roast Wooley Park Farm Free-range Chicken and Chips (£25.00), one of us chose the Glenarm Sirloin Steak and Chips (£20 for 250g) and another went for the Chicken Salad (£13.50). Unfortunately, the latter never came. It did show up on the bill, however, and once we pointed this out our server was duly apologetic and offered to make our desserts complimentary. Minus this glitch, the service was excellent, very friendly and swift - especially for a week-young restaurant. Back to the food - the chicken comes positioned vertically for ease of carving and, of course, theatricality. It was quite a sight to behold these poultry being ferried to and fro, legs up in the air like cancan dancers. The waitress offered to carve it for us, as shown in the photo below. The seasoning was delicious, especially the gravy juice at the bottom of the plate. The breast itself was not the most moist chicken breast I have had, although it is often drier that the leg, but the quality of the meat was there for tasting. The leg was the most enjoyable part and extremely supple. The unique presentation of the vertical chicken also allows for a 360 attack, permitting everyone on the table to dig in and also enabling you to get to every nook and cranny. The skin on the 'underside' of the bird, for example, is one of my favourite bits and it was extremely easy to access, while tasting just as crispy, thick and seasoning-encrusted as it should be. Since the whole chicken serves up to 3 people, my companion who ordered the MIA Chicken Salad was thankfully well and truly stuffed by the end of our meal. I am told the steak was not the tenderest in the history of steak tasting. It was, however, cooked as requested and retained a good meaty flavour. Both dishes come with chips in the form of French fries. If I'm being pedantic, which of course I am - especially with chips - they were not hot enough upon arriving to the table. Temperature is crucial when it comes to fries! They did taste good, but for personal preference they could also have been slightly more cooked to give at least a hint of crunch to their exterior. We ordered both available side dishes: the Garden Salad (£4.25), which was fantastically fresh with a really tasty dressing, and the Suffolk Crown Asparagus (£5.25), which were skilfully cooked to retain a gentle crunch and were a really great accompaniment to the meats. Merging visual culture and culinary delights in one space works wonderfully here and, as I iterated at the beginning of this piece, it is a harmonious marriage that translates into a guaranteed great night of food, drink and socialising. The concept is focused, the dishes are great, the service is efficient, the place is cool. The future is bright for The Tramshed. read more

The lukewarm food, poorly cooked steak (ordered medium, instead served black & blue, and £110 bill all could have easily been forgiven if not for the manager on duty. After eating maybe 1/3 of the meal, we shrugged it off...every kitchen has a bad day, right? As we asked for the bill, mentioning the food was a little less than...the manager proceeded to launch a full fledged argument at the table, stating no one checks on guests because it's simply "not what we do here". Oh? Yet for a meal of 2 plates and cocktails there was an automatic service charge added with no hesitation. I've never left a restaurant who acted like they've done me a favor by letting me eat there. Rude, unprofessional and unreasonable at best. Save yourself and go to a Hawksmoor. read more

as it says above "meh". was wowed by the formaldehyde but thats pretty much where it ended. we'd booked for 9pm, 6 of us. didn't get seated until 10pm and it looked like the place had just opened even though that is clearly not the case. they did offer us some cheap starter to make up for it. sat in the booths which were good for the group. try get in there! I had the sirloin, £20 with fries, it was nice well cooked and tasty but a little cool. rest of the table ordered the steak salads and one went in for the whole chicken which came out limp, dry and not that warm either! we complained, didn't tip (which we explained to the server) and left pretty dissatisfied. luckily we were drunk by then. swerve. read more

Doesn't live up to any hype I'm afraid. The fillet steak salad was very disappointing - no flavour at all to the meat. I tried the whole roast chicken others in my group had and this was tasty but nothing special. The salted caramel fondue and cheesecake both lacked any subtlety. Tramshed is a place I like to take visitors to. It captures the vibe of Shoreditch pretty well - industrial, modern, quirky, hipster, a bit pretentious... well you get it. You will find the interior interesting even if you don't have a taste for Damien Hirst or dead cows. Tramshed was a tramshed in the past - it once housed electricity generators for local trams, and was later converted into this chicken and steak restaurant by celebrity chef Mark Hix, who owns six other restaurants/bar in town. And even if you don't like Damien Hirst, I am afraid it is pretty much in your face as the first thing that greets you when you step inside is a giant formaldehyde filled tank containing a chicken standing on top of a cow. And yes! this is what you are going to eat tonight. I quite like the humor actually, intended or untended. There is also an art gallery in the basement where the restaurateur offers space for various artists to showcase their work. Alright, onto the food. I have been there on three separate occasions and have to say that execution is solid. When I say chicken and steak restaurant - that's the only choice you have in terms of mains. I've had both. The chicken is delicious albeit I believe some people will find its presentation abhorrent (look at the picture!) The roasted skin was crispy and the meat succulent and moist, very flavorful and the skin smells nice. (Just don't look at the dead chicken while you eat) For the steak, there is a choice between rib and sirloin. Personally, I prefer the rib but try it out to see which one you like better. On my last visit though, I had the sirloin and didn't think the quality of the meat is that great, doesn't taste very fresh. The fries were really good though. And that was just one visit, everything else has always been fantastic so I will give them benefit of the doubt. I also discovered that the shakes and desserts are to-die-for. My favorite is the Eton Mess milkshake and the salted caramel fondue with marshmallows and donuts (order one to share). Best marshmallows I had, so fluffy that I think maybe that's what a cloud will taste like. Anyways, not a very healthy combination but who cares when you are at Tramshed. Staff have always been attentive and funny, services efficient. I saw that they also offer an express lunch menu which is very good value. I imagine if I work around Liverpool Street I will go all the time so if you happen to be there around lunch, try it as a taster. Ideal place for group dinners, plus you can explore all the cool and hip bars and cafes in the area pre and post dinner. I highly recommend. read more

Come on an expense account. Stay for the chicken. The room is great. Mr Hix knows how to arrange a space and make people feel welcome. We were there on a Wednesday night and the place was heaving. Drinks were a little more creative than I expected. I ordered a perfect Manhattan up, which came down with a round ice cube in it. I was in the mood so didn't comment. It was nice as a drink, but not what I ordered. Starters are utterly useless. Don't waste your money. Seriously, they are one of the great rip offs in London restaurants. An utter sham. The starters consist of a trio for £7.50 per person. The potted shrimp were pedestrian. The Yorkshire pudding was fine but bland with an unidentifiable goop on the side. The salad was nothing special and small. A total waste. The steak was cooked pretty well. Not to NY standards in terms of char, and the meat itself was good not outstanding. It of course was very expensive. The chicken though was the highlight. Really, really, really good. I can't recall a better roast chicken. And the chips were grand and overflowing. Well done. (BTW, a great but bit odd water policy of discouraging bottles in favour of a filtered pitcher. I can live with that.) We didn't have pud. Luckily a friend picked up the bill. To be honest, I'd go back for takeaway chicken. I wouldn't go back except on an expense account. read more

Tramshed was unreal. I'm visiting my boyfriend from Manhattan and we were searching for dinner somewhere last night near his flat. We stumbled upon this on yelp and thought it'd be worth checking out. We arrived without a reservation and the hostess was sweet enough to seat us pretty much immediately at a table. To start, this place HUGE! They have it in a warehouse-like building with a ginormous cow "floating" in the center of the restaurant. Started off with a couple of beers and the yorkshire pudding with whipped chicken livers (£3.95). We weren't sure what the yorkshire pudding was going to be like as we both have never tried it before... and then... out comes this puffy pastry-like bread with a side of the whipped chicken liver. It was seriously the perfect pairing - with the savory and creamy taste of the chicken liver spread and the crunchy crust from the pudding.. soo good. The boyfriend generally isn't even a fan of chicken liver and he was scraping the rest of the liver with the rest of the bread. So pretty much what I'm saying is.. GET THIS, you will not be disappointed. Based off the majority of the yelp reviews, it looked like the roast barn-reared indian rock chicken with stuffing and chips (£27.50 to share btn 2-3 ppl) was the thing to get. Literally between the time we were seated and the time we ordered, I think I saw 5 chickens come out for tables surrounding us. I don't normally like to order chicken at restaurants in fear that it'll be dry and flavorless. Not at this place!! The presentation was awesome as it's sitting in an upright position within a metal stand. The chicken itself was perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. It was sooo moist and tender! Honestly this is one of the best chicken dishes I've ever had. And that stuffing! My goodness that stuffing was amazing especially with the gravy topped over it. They even supplied us with a separate plate of stuffing at no extra charge. Oh and can't forget the chips!! (or as we Americans call it fries) The fries were soo good, not too "potato-y" (I made that up and if you don't know what I mean by that, I don't know what to tell you) and perfectly crispy. This restaurant has been on my list pretty much since I moved to London, but somehow I never got around to it. I just knew about the formaldehyde cow, which people have mentioned in conversations about Damien Hirst. But when a friend was visiting and said he wanted steak, this was on our shortlist and we booked it after finding that every Hawksmoor in town was full. It's a very airy, sprawling space, almost a warehouse feel. We have one of the booths to the side of the restaurant, which sat the 5 of us comfortably and could have even fit in a few more people. We ordered some starters, including the Korean fried chicken, beefballs, croquettes, and the Yorkshire pudding with whipped chicken livers. The meat ones were rather forgettable, but the Yorkshire pudding was super interesting and would recommend. For the mains, we shared the Shoreditch strip joint, which was possibly the largest piece of meat I have ever been served. It's 1.4kg of pure meat, for 5-6 to share, and we definitely had leftovers. It comes with chips and salad, so we were basically all set. They had a confusing system of where they told us the meat usually comes out one grade rarer than what you ordered, so we went for medium. When we got it, there was definitely a spectrum among the different parts of the piece from medium rare to medium, so hopefully among a group you can sort out your various preferences. On our way out, we saw some very good looking grilled whole chicken, so that also seems to be a popular dish. The food here isn't anything fancy, but they do the classics well. read more

The Porterhouse steak and roast chicken with stuffing were delicious, along with the abundance of chips and lettuce salad we added on. Went here with three work colleagues. All four of us ordered the same steak option except I ordered the 250g and not the 500g. Firstly, they brought me a 500g. I offered to keep it rather than have them send it back, mainly because they were so busy and I didn't want to wait for ages to receive a new order. Secondly, one of my colleagues had more fat than meat on his steak. Thirdly, they charged us for the 500g instead of my original order of 250g. All of the meat was tough and the staff were very rushed. This is a busy restaurant so don't expect too much personal service or character. read more

Overpriced. Ordered the chicken and bacon salad. A few cubes of bacon, with some roasted chicken in a measly bit of field greens for 14 pounds. The only dressing they had was a honey-mustard type. Very bland, with minimal flavor. The staff was attentive and polite, but not very welcoming. The protruding balls of a nosering, hanging out the nostrils of our waitress didn't help make any of the menu items more appetizing. Solid food and excellent service from the staff. Make sure you get reservations head of time cause the place gets packed. The restaurant is tucked away in one of the side streets in Shore Ditch, but easy enough to find. Drinks are good and the starters are yummy. If you can, get the 3 for 10 pound deal. We got the Yorkshire pudding, onions rings, and the croquettes. They were yummy, but they weren't piping hot. Seemed like they had all the starters on standby, but aside from that...very tasty. For two people, you can just order the 500g sirloin and it comes with fries (chips). We got a side of the minted peas. Very nice and refreshing! The steak was good, but I think the winning dish would be the roasted chicken. It's a show stopper when the waiters wall by with it. Again, the staff was very attentive and great dining experience. Had a delicious birthday meal here. Between 5 of us we got the sharer portions of the porterhouse steak and ribs, both of which were absolutely delicious. All the meat and sides were amazing and couldn't say a bad thing about any of them, however if i could recommend one thing it would be the salted caramel fondue on the desert menu. OH MY. It's served with marshmallows and little doughnuts. To die for. A must. Don't have enough positives to say about it. Go to Tramshed and enjoy!! read more

I was sooo looking forward to this and went despite the poor reviews and only to be met with disappointment. the best bit was by far and indeed the saving grace of evening: Apple and gooseberry pie with custard. Such a pity. I tried to go here all weekend and finally got a time tonight Sunday. On arrival we were told there was no chicken whatsoever? There is only chicken and steak on the menu so how can a establishment of this calbre have no chicken very strange. Anyway we decided to stay and have the steak ( rib and a sirloin) pls a few side dishes and a bottle of wine! The wine was ok the steaks were poor and cold very sad. By far one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I came for lunch and went for one of their £10 specials, the cock n' bull sandwich. I also ended getting the pork crackling and apple sauce nibble/starter, which was amazing but make sure you've got teeth made out of steel as it was pretty hard to eat. The sandwich was made up of half chicken and half beef. Beef is cooked perfectly but you're aren't asked your preference of rare, medium/rare when you order, so could be an issue for a fussy eater. The chicken had to be the star, it had an amazing herbed crust and I wished the whole sandwich was chicken. You also get a huge bowl fries with it and some onion rings. I had a large 20 pax group booking for dinner on NYE and the whole experience was superb from the get go. The reservations/events team were friendly, responsive and accommodating. We arrived to a semi-private upstairs area perfect for group dining and shortly after were served a delicious seasonal feasting menu. Everything was standout and my fav was the yorkshire pudding with terrine. Great service on the night (sorry if we were a bit loud)! Highly recommend for groups! read more

I was in the company of four friends - we had a well placed table, with efficient / responsive service. Menu wide-ranging and between us, we covered many of the options.
