The prongs in my engagement ring were bent and the main diamond was loose. We had stopped by a well known jeweler in Orinda and told it would take at least 4 weeks to repair and cost "a couple hundred dollars". I had been given a recommendation of Trans jeweler in Lafayette so I decided to stop by. Mr. Tran greeted my husband and I right away. I told him the issue with my ring and he promptly took my ring, repaired it, and cleaned it all under 20 minutes. The cost was less than $50 and he did an amazing job! Amazing service! This location is behind Wells Fargo and can be easily missed. There are several parking lots and street parking close by and parking wasn't a problem. I came to get the clasp of a necklace fixed and Mr. Tran did a wonderful job fixing it. He was finishing with another client and he helped me right after. After many years of happy marriage to a girl that loves serious gardening, her platinum engagement ring had a bent over prong, and one prong pulled away from the stone. It was also absolutely filthy having never been cleaned. Mr. Tran took me as a walk-in, and worked steadily and diligently to meticulously reform the two platinum prongs into perfect alignment. Then he smoothed them down with the wheel, followed by 5 minutes of polishing on the rosin wheel across the room and shined everything up like new. He patiently worked the ring through the high-speed wheel with various grades of gentle abrasives, right down to the feather finish. Then dipped them in the ultrasonic, scrubbed it clean, and finished with high pressure compressed steam. Tran works with a very high level of skill, patience, top-notch equipment, and diligence. I would not hesitate to bring all of our jewelry repair to a craftsman with this level of skill and integrity for all our needs. His price was extremely reasonable as well. There are a lot of positive reviews - so read what I'm about to say as a possibly singular/specific/outside-scope-experience. I went in on a weekday with my year old son. As a full time mom with no family nearby, I have no time away from mom duties. I was inquiring if Mr Trans could help me design an engagement ring. I said I was interested in rose gold. My son was grumpy. I realized he had a dirty diaper. Being a mom is hard and there's often collateral "not the best" moments. As I was trying to understand Mr Trans style of working in design creation, i intimated that I was interested in rose gold. He told me that rose gold gets dirty easily. He is giving me nearly no information to my questions other than requesting I bring in pictures. When I left, I felt as though I had been given the cold shoulder, I felt more than disheartened, I called my husband and cried. I put creating my ring on hold for another two years. In no small part from this experience. Fast forward to my current jeweler, when meeting her for the first time, and expressing my interests, in style as well as rose gold color, she made me feel great! She was kind. I enjoyed the whole process. When looking back, I don't know if Mr Tran was trying to give me a message about my son's dirty diaper via my question about rose gold (I have rose gold ring now. And no, it doesn't get dirty easily at all. Everyone I've ever asked says they've never heard of such a thing), if he wasn't a fan of babies or mothers, or was just having a grumpy day. I visit Davidson & Licht Jewelry in Walnut Creek quite often and after each visit, I feel that I need to write a five-star review. The reason I haven't done it is simply because I don't like writing reviews in the first place. After my last visit that however I feel compelled to write a review. He purchased the watch from a dealer in LA, they fitted the bracelet for his wrist, which is almost my size but the bracelets still needed a fine adjustment. I received a watch last December which needed three links taken out of the band. I have not lived in the east bay for years and found this shop while driving through town. I entered the shop and was greeted by a gentleman who I believe is the owner. I explained the situation and was assisted right away. The process was fast and easy. The shop looked organized and had some nice watches inside. The cost of removing the links was only $10. The man who removed the links was efficient and very kind. Trans Jeweler is absolutely the best jeweler business in Lafayette, and possibly all of the East Bay Area. The reason I say this is because Tran, the owner, is so experienced and knowledgable about repairs, jewelry maintenance, stones and metals, and custom-made work. His store is very small and humble, but his expertise far outshines such grandiose companies as Shane & Co. etc. Tran is also very well-priced, I feel that he could charge a lot more for the work he does but is simply too nice of a guy to do it. He comes from a long generation of jewelers in Vietnam (I believe?), and finally set up his own store in Lafayette years ago - he has been working around jewelry-care since he was a little kid. My husband and I had our wedding rings custom-designed by Tran, and they turned out beautifully - exactly what I had hoped for and mroe. We sat with Tran and looked through his catalogue of different types of gold metals, diamonds, molding tactics, designs - everything you could think of. He took his time explaining to us what different options may look like, the prices, everything we wanted to know. I had a vision in mind of what I wanted for my wedding ring, and wasn't sure if he fully understood because it was so unique. He had our rings ready on exactly the day he had projected... When we went to pick them up, I was shocked to see that he had so perfectly made my ring exactly the way I wanted it! It's as though he could 'sense' what I had in mind... After so many years in the business, he has gained an admirable intuition about what his customers want. got my wedding ring repaired here. 2 diamond pieces fell out, leaving gaping holes in them, but I postponed fixing it because I thought it would cost a fortune. Trans was extremely reasonable and he gave me credit for some golf earrings I haven't worn in 10 years and never will so the repair cost me under $50. The repair only took 2 days although he told me it could take up to 1 or 2 weeks. Trans started working in his family jewelry business when he was 13 years old and he has had his shop in Lafayette for 30 some years. He seems like a very honest man and I am so happy I found him because I would go back to him if I needed another jewelry repair. But I remembered having recently walking back to work from Bart and seeing this teeny tiny little jewelery store that had a sign for repairs in the window and thinking I wish I had an excuse to check it out. So hey, thanks Seiko! Anyway, Trans Jeweler is petite, has a case or two of lower end jewelry, (mostly pearls as far as I could tell) and a little workstation in the back corner. The older gentleman working there was very nice and quoted me $15 for the fix. He apparently also will make custom jewlery as well. Don't bother parking on the street, there's free parking behind. Enter on Happy Valley Road to the left of the Wells Fargo bank! Note that they are closed on Mondays and at times they just close and leave a note on the door. A few years ago we found this small jewelry store, from which we purchased the occasional watchband or had small repairs done. I got to know Tran and admire him greatly. A year ago, we had him make my wedding ring, using mostly our own materials (family diamonds, gold from a bracelet I no longer wore.) The design was a collaborative process and he was happy to work that way, creating a wax model so we could see if the proposed design looked right. The result was nothing short of terrific; I get compliments on the ring all the time. I should add that Tran generously polishes it every few months for free. I heartily recommend Tran. He's very quiet and a private person, but as you get to know him, you'll find someone worthy of admiration and respect, in more ways than one. I also agree with the reviewer who said that he probably could charge more for the work he does. As someone noted, the jewelry in his store isn't particularly impressive, but that's because most of what he does is truly beautiful custom work. You won't be disappointed! read more
