Normally, I don't like to give bad reviews on any business but thought I'd warn folks in this case. They tried to "pull a fast one" on my to the tune of $500+ and I caught them. I brought in a gold/diamond watch just for a battery. The watch is worth ~$10K. They swapped out the battery but when I got home, the watch wasn't running. I brought it back in and they told me it needed "servicing". I asked them to doublecheck the battery in case it was faulty- they said the new battery was fine. They then told me that fine watches like mine should be serviced every few years and this can cost between $500-$1000 or more. They said they'd have an expert look at and then give me an estimate (no charge for the diagnostic). A week later, the estimate came back at over $500. I decided to not get the service and just pick up the watch. I then decided to go to the jeweler I normally go to in Alamo. The next day, I brought the watch to my regular jeweler saying it needed a new battery (no mention of the "servicing" Solano tried to sell me). They asked me to wait while they swapped out the battery. 10 minutes later, $20, my watch was just fine, running beautifully. And still ticking a week later. Oh, and get this- the folks at Solano tried to "warn" me that if I didn't get the watch serviced right then that the cost of the service may go up significantly (like several hundred dollars more!) in the future due to the uncertainty of tariffs and cost of buying parts... what a load of bunk! Sorry to see the lack of integrity. read more

I went in to get my watch band adjusted and they said they could do it for 10.00$ while I waited. Email ahead of time to ask about fixing my wife's Rolex, provided description and photo, they said to "bring in right away" so we can fix it and stop the damage. Upon arriving, they informed me they "outsource" the repairs to an outside service and repairs are only process once a week, I have to wait until next week. They should be more up front about their processes and not mislead customers. read more

Suffice it to say that I'm not a great shopper - clothes are a stretch for me, so jewelry is really out of my league. Solano Jewelers is truly a neighborhood shop that has saved me many a Mothers' Day. I've been to the store over the years many times for all sorts of occasions; back when I still wore watches (before eventually losing them all every time I played pickup basketball) I would come here to get my batteries switched. Great for bat mitzvah gifts. They even helped me tighten a loose screw on my sunglasses once, which feels above and beyond the job requirements. I most appreciate that I've always been treated as if I am an important customer. Though I'll never spend millions on diamonds, the employees here are always warm and kind. Called in on a Sunday and had a pleasant and welcoming call with Jane regarding having my engagement ring and wedding band resized. Came in on a Tuesday to drop off my rings with Aren (sorry if that's misspelled) and jacky was able to resize both rings by the end of the day. By Thursday, my rings were too tight (summer time heat) so Friday morning I called and was able to drop off the rings to get resized again. By the end of the day, the rings were finished but upon trying them on they were still a bit too tight. Aline, her husband, and son were all so accommodating and reassuring that my rings would be fixed before going home. Small gestures of customer service is always a win. This review is specifically for anyone who visited Oaks Jewelers when they used to be on Solano Ave. in Berkeley! When I discovered that my beloved Oaks had, just like my family, moved to the other side of the tunnel, I was thrilled! When I lived in Berkeley Oaks was my go-to place for jewelry and watch repair and purchase. A few weeks ago, I went to Solano Jewelers to, once again, buy a new watch (after losing my previous Oaks purchase!). I discovered that Solano Jewelers is not exactly Oaks transplanted as I had hoped. While the kind and helpful customer service was the same, this "new Oaks" is much swankier (and, I think, more expensive) than "old Oaks" was. They also no longer sell watches (much less the inexpensive Timex watch I was looking for!), instead focusing on higher-end jewelry. I was somewhat disappointed to see how the shop had changed in its move. Ultimately, I will certainly come back in the future when I need something like a ring repair, but I wanted to share my experience for those who, like me, might be surprised to find these changes. read more
