I don't know anything about mindfulness. I mean, I took some courses on stress management in undergrad, and we touched on a few things regarding mindfulness, but I'm certainly no expert. So I thought to myself, why don't I go out and find an expert? That's just what I did. I did some research, and I found Camille, who does wonderful work with the fine citizens of Winter Park in terms of mindfulness and meditation. So I reached out to her and asked if she could piggyback my talk with some useful words from an expert such as her. She actually said yes! And not only would she talk to the people, she would put on a demonstration of a meditation with her amazing meditation bowls. So I stumbled my way through my PowerPoint, and then she took the floor. I dimmed the lights, and she took me and the residents through a 20-ish minute long meditation with breathing awareness, positive thoughts, eliminating distractions, and of course those wonderful bowls. Those bowls have a lot of power! They got loud, and it was a lovely sound. I want to thank her so much for doing this pro-bono. I will be passing out her information to all of my community, and I hope we can meet again one day.

TUA is a non profit that hosts spiritual/mindfulness events and workshops including Tai Chi, Healing Sound Bath & Heart-Opening Meditation, Yoga, Dance and Sound Experience, among others. I attended a Tai Chi & Qigong class for beginners with Alan Zemel and really enjoyed it. I learned about the benefits of Tai Chi, how to breathe through my diaphragm and to move in an intentional, balanced and mindful way. I felt welcomed and appreciated by Penny (who also teaches there) and Alan from the moment I walked in. The furniture and dim lighting created a calming environment. I plan to enroll in another class in the near future.

I came here after hearing other members talking about how nice it was, and I keep coming back because I love the instructors here! Eva from Zumba and Emelissa from Turn Up Dance Fitness are both amazing instructors who are getting me genuinely excited for my workout every week! It's about a 25 min drive from my house, which is located within walking distance from the Winter Park location, but to me it is well worth it for the talented instructors! If you aren't familiar with the YMCA or just needing a quick refresh, it's a family and community centered fitness facility that relies heavily on donations and volunteers. The memberships recently had a revamp and now have different options to meet your budget and goals. My friend told me about how amazing it was for her when she was a new mom and it's done the same for me and my family - helped us spend more time exercising, moving our bodies and connecting with our community. The childcare is SO helpful for my husband and I to get our workouts in, and I really love both the space and the people who watch the children. This particular location has an area for littles and a separate area for teens. They also have a splash pad that's perfect for cooling the kids off on a hot day. The pool is located outside by the splash pad and they have open swim, reserved lanes, Aqua Zumba classes, swimming lessons and more. This location also offers fitness classes for toddlers, kids and teens that I don't see available at other locations. The locker rooms and bathrooms give off serious spa vibes! The tile and finishes were done so well. My only gripe is that there is no sauna or steam room at this location. There are also family restrooms with individual bathrooms separate from the locker rooms. The weight room at this facility is huge, open and airy. The studios used for classes are really beautiful with wood floors, big floor to ceiling windows and a large mirror wall. I will say, the max capacity is 20 for classes, so make sure you sign up in advance and show up early. The rooms should be a bit bigger, but the designer used a lot of the space in the hallway to house a grand staircase with large LED chandeliers on the ceiling. Form over function at its finest! All jokes aside, this place was done so well, it really brings a modern feel to the Y. There's even a much younger crowd at this location. The surrounding area is currently under a major reconstruction and will soon become a very sought after neighborhood - the Packing District! The Y offers free trials so definitely take them up on the offer, or ask a friend to take you with their guest pass. It might just be the inspiration you need to start a new fitness routine!

Meila assessed my current condition and during our session was attentive to my concerns, encouraged me with helpful feedback and didn't push me too much when I needed to alter certain exercises. She's a good listener, attentive and patient. I look forward to regularly participating in the services offered at this location as well as attending classes with Meila, who offers deep Strengthening routines for building stamina if you're a little out of practice, like myself...I highly recommend.

I recently tried StretchLab for the first time and absolutely LOVED it! I booked online through…read moretheir website for a same-day appointment and then a member of their team called me to get a bit more info about my goals and provided me with additional info to prepare me for my first stretch session. I have not worked out or done much physical activity since I had a baby, so one of my goals is to increase my mobility and flexibility before just jumping back into exercise. She let me know that non-slip grippy socks are required which was good to know. They do have them available for purchase in store if you forget or need to get some. Upon arrival, I was kindly greeted and instructed to remove my shoes and get ready with my socks on. My flexologist was Mackenzie and she was wonderful. She walked me back to the stretch bench and began to explain the process and everything she was going to be doing. First, they have you take a quick Physmodo scan which involves doing some squats on a screen and it assesses your mobility, posture, activation, and symmetry. This tells the flexologist the areas that they need to focus on, and they customize each stretch session specifically to your needs. My scans revealed that I was especially tight in my hamstrings, neck, and hips. Then you lay down on the table and they begin to gently stretch your full body. Wow, it felt amazing and I didn't want it to end! It should never be painful and Mackenzie checked in with me often to make sure I was comfortable. It's almost like physical therapy. After my session, they provided me with more info on their memberships and pricing. While I really wanted to commit to a membership, I did have a bit of sticker shock. A single stretch session goes up to $115 each time or a membership is $299/month which includes 4 stretch sessions... basically one per week. I unfortunately just could not justify the cost, but I really did enjoy the experience. They have a $49 special for your first 50-minute intro session and it is 100% worth trying!

The Maitland Senior Center is an amazing community resource for seniors. They also have a tech tutor class and every second Friday of the month the local Florida SHINE program manager provides health insurance counseling. He focuses on breathing and focus throughout each move. He encourages all to join in and move to your own stretch/movement ability...but not to pain! Bring your own mat and wear comfortable clothing. I have friends who have joined Club Pilates at other parts of town and they have raved about their workouts. I wish that the initiation fee and classes that I paid for could be used at the other locations as well so that I could work out with my friends but you have to buy the unlimited package to be able to do that which is quite expensive and out of my budget. The instructors and staff are friendly and helpful. So far, the members seem to be in their own headspace and not open to conversation before or after class but that's ok.
