I cannot say enough about cpy yoga! I had a stroke 2.5 yrs ago paralyzing my entire right side. I started with a private lesson with Theresa to see if I could even participate in class. She took me under her angel wings and breathed confidence into rebuilding my neuro pathways without a doubt. I have now been going consistently to Theresa and Calvin for a year and a half and my body, balance and strength has changed significantly! They exude extreme passion and love for yoga. They lead by example! You feel as if you are getting a private lesson in a group class. I can't think of a more supportive environment mentally and physically! It is truly a spiritual experience! The studio is beautiful, but the instructor chastised me for whispering with my friend, all while holding her own loud personal conversations with people in the room, put her foot on someone's back to push her into position, and held my leg up without my permission and didn't let go even when I told her to. Update to my update- 5 Stars for a fabulous yoga studio with a new location that's smaller, but really intimate. The new location is right near Smith and Edgewater. Calvin and Teresa welcome you at the door and there you see some great CPY merch. Beyond that is one small room. Although it's not "hot yoga," they keep the room pretty warm, and cold outside Update- 5 Stars because years later I return to CPY to find my previous 4 stars inadequate. Recently I've given a few yoga studios a try while deciding to get back into a more regular practice. I revisited CPY and realized how much is missed it/how much better it suited me than many other local studios. The focus of the ashtanga practice at CPY is not just fitness (though that's an added side effect) but rather on breathing and being present. I've also been getting into mindful meditation and their style pairs well with it. It's totally non-judgmental and the studio is incredibly inviting. This starts with the instructors. Theresa and Calvin make you feel immediately welcome and treat you like a friend in a way that feels totally authentic. The classes are challenging but you're encouraged to take breaks in child's pose and listen to your body. At the end of the practice is a Shavasana that will have you feeling calm and relaxed on the way back to your car. Another lovely touch is that they offered wonderfully aromatic tea as you left the class. It's a little touch but many little touches like this create a wonderful overall experience. The one thing I wish is that they had earlier classes for those who want to get a class in before work (currently the earliest is 9am). Otherwise, I wouldn't change a single thing. I took my first class in many years tonight , the class reminds me of the ancient teachings . The temp is really warm , my mat is new so I was sliding all over the place ! . Actually , tonight was the first time I ventured outside in over a year ( since moving to Orlando ,) I chose CPY because the great energy can be felt through their website and and I just knew the studio is to be my primary' place to go to practice and elongate . The class flows so well . I truly appreciate the breathwork focus ! Having a career in gymnastics & adult ballet background, and about 2 + years of yoga understanding, breathwork is one of my primary focuses and though the classes focus on so much more , I focus on my breath . I've just left an Astanga/Vinyasa class and felt compelled to immediately write a review. I loved the entire experience so much. It's been a long time since I've practiced yoga and this was the perfect way to re-initiate myself. Theresa made us feel so supported in a truly judgement-free zone. She offered lots of options since the class consisted of people at various levels. Theresa made a point to help my friend out with different positions that accommodate her back pain issues. I originally bought a 3-class beginners pass, but I can see myself becoming a regular. This is exactly the kind of yoga practice I need - restorative AND challenging. For my next class I'll make sure to remember these things: - Bring a towel for your mat and your face. While it's not necessarily a "hot yoga" class, it does get quite warm due to the use of outside air and minimal fan usage. - The doors open 5 minutes before class, but they don't actually begin until 9 minutes after the listed start time. This helps everyone not feel so rushed. - There are no cubbies for your purse or keys, so you bring everything in with you (except your shoes). Make sure you only bring the bare necessities. - Drink lots of water before and after. You will sweat A LOT. read more

Theresa and Calvin are awesome! My girlfriend and I recently started going to CPY roughly two months ago. I have been wanting to get into Yoga for a while, but I had been intimidated considering my lack of experience and flexibility. CPY makes you feel comfortable and helps you focus on the real benefit of yoga early on, which is your breath. I have never felt uncomfortable in any of the classes and I have to say I have definitely noticed an improvement in my ability to be mindful since I started going. I try to get to one class per week right now since that's all I can afford, but I look forward to hopefully getting to go more often down the road. I can't sing enough praises about my experience at CPY! I've practiced yoga very casually and inconsistently over the years, but never in a studio/class setting until I came to CPY...and I'm afraid I might be completely spoiled now! Theresa and Calvin are the epitome of welcoming, warm, and helpful. From greeting you as you enter the door to serving tea as you exit, everything feels intentional and judgment-free. I've been to the Astanga Vinyasa and Liquid Fire classes, both of which I enjoyed thoroughly. There's a heavy focus on breathing and being present in addition to the obvious fitness aspect. There's really not a nice way to say that College Park Yoga sucks, so I'll just say that it's not for everybody. It may take a while for people new to yoga to find the right studio, and this clearly wasn't the place for me. I only went because they had a generous Groupon, and since I only went once it would turn out to be a very expensive class. If you practice yoga for the peace and serenity it brings to your frazzled mind and like the sounds of chirping birds and waterfalls, you probably won't like College Park Yoga. If, however, you enjoy Boot Camp, meatheads, the familiar but disturbing smell of a locker room and heat, you'll love this place. The style here is Power Yoga. It's done in a hot room and the goal is to get your heart rate up and, I assume, lose weight. Sun salutations are practiced over and over again until you're drenched with sweat and bored to tears. The heat and close proximity to other yogis makes for some interesting odors. During the one course I managed to make it through without vomiting, the instructor didn't really guide us through breathing despite her yells that "If you're not breathing, you're missing the point of yoga!" When I looked around the crowded room, I saw people panting as if they'd just run a marathon. This is yoga? I want to leave a yoga studio feeling calm and happy. I want to walk down the street and feel the desire to hug strange elderly people. I want to feel that yoga high, dammit, the one that gets you addicted. I left College Park Yoga kind of wanting to punch somebody in the face. If you like Boot Camp Yoga, this is your place. If you're searching for serenity, a spiritual core or happy happy joy joy, just walk on by. read more

I stopped in at the College Park Yoga studio while visiting my in-laws over Thanksgiving break. I took a total of 2 sessions - one taught by Teresa and the other was led by Calvin (the owners). For me, a good yoga instructor is an important aspect of my practice. Being from NYC, I have been exposed to a variety of styles of teaching across the range of yoga including Anusara, Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Vinyasa as well as Jivamukti. I was not impressed with the teaching styles of the instructors here at this studio. There is no centering at the beginning, warm up, or really any spiritual presence. The instructors talk way too much throughout the class. They should try to do this in the beginning while centering and then focus on the class instead. They do not use traditional yoga terminology in flowing from asana to asana. Instead, there is a lot of "....and then you go down..." ----- what is that supposed to mean? What they mean is they want you to take a vinyasa and flow. There is a very limited range of postures. Its mostly just flowing (which i think I can do on my own without paying to be in a studio). Its basically very beginner postures with no inversions or advanced poses so its not mentally challenging at all (and I wasn't in a beginners class). BUT, I went back to CPY a 2nd time just to see if maybe I had a bad teacher and not all of them are that way or if maybe my 1st teacher was having an off day - not the case. With that, if I lived in the area, I would not choose to belong to this studio. The reason I am giving CPY 2 stars is because if you do plan on just going to yoga for a "workout" then this would be fine because they have you do a lot of push-ups so you do get very tired. The other thing I was really ticked off about was they made me "rent" a towel because I didn't bring my own. I don't sweat while practicing yoga, so I usually don't need a towel. It is their "POLICY" to have a towel just sitting next to your mat in class, so if you do decide to go here, bring a small hand towel. All in all, when I walked out of this class, I didn't feel energized, revived, or mentally de-stressed - which is usually how I feel when I practice in NYC at my home yoga studio with awesome teachers who have had decades of experience working with world-renowned experts in the teaching. If you know of any decent studios in the area with great teachers, please let me know because I may end up in the area for good and I am VERY worried about what I am going to do about my yoga practice outside of NYC. read more

I have practiced yoga for 6 years, mainly in a gym setting. At college park I feel the yoga experience is more authentic and for this reason I recommend it. The atmosphere adds so much to yoga practice here! It's usually a very full class so get there early if you want a choice spot for parking as well as on the floor. Please make sure to bring a towel and water, you will sweat a great deal! If you know most yoga poses and are comfortable with vinyasa this is a great spot! I can't help to compare my regular yoga place in NYC. I think this place is ok to me. My friend who's a regular here and brought me here when I was in town. The space isn't too big, not sure what's the maximum people this place can hold. the price was reasonable, it was a good workout, but somehow I didn't really how the instructor was kept talking and hold on a pose forever. inconsistency is the word i'm looking for. read more

I absolutely love this place, and I haven't found any yoga studios in Orlando that come close to matching the physical challenge or positive atmosphere. The studio is owned and operated by Teresa and Calvin, a warm, fun young couple dedicated to sharing their style of Power Yoga. Don't be intimidated by the name. The teachers are great about stressing that you go at you own pace, rest when you need to, focus on your breathing, and offer suggestions for modified poses depending on how advanced you may be or if you're suffering from any injuries. Because they focus on going at your own pace, most of their classes are suitable for beginners and more advanced students. The Beginner Power Yoga Experience and Power Yoga Experience classes are more challenging, so check their website (http://collegeparkyoga.com) for class descriptions and schedules. A couple of reviews mention that they talk throughout, but I don't find that distracting at all. They are usually just reminding us to breathe, to go at our own pace and to challenge and encourage us as well. They bring some humor and light-heartedness to the class which I like. I've also never really found the traffic on Smith Street to be distracting even when I'm close to the windows. They don't keep it super hot (low to mid-80s), but come prepared to sweat! The workouts are really good for stress relief and toning. This is an active, challenging class, so if you're looking for a leisurely, quiet, meditative class this is probably not the place for you. Bring a towel and yoga mat, although they have them for rent too if you need. Drink plenty of water in the day or so leading up to the class and after class. Classes do sometimes start about 10 or 15 minutes late which is about the only negative, but that's really not a problem for me. Classes are 1.25 hours long and $12 per class for drop-ins, $50 for a 5 class package, $90 for 10 classes and $105 for unlimited monthly. They also offer an introductory special of 3 classes for $20 for new students and a 1-hour community class for $5 @ 9a on Saturday mornings. NOTE: They'll be moving to a new, bigger location on Edgewater Drive across the street from Edgewater High School sometime in June 2010 (my guess would be mid- to late-June), so you may want to check their website or call to confirm the location. read more

I'm not an uber-experienced yogi, but I do it when I can. College Park Yoga has always been amazing and great to me. My first experience is when they sent someone over to MindComet, and we did it as a group. Some couldn't hang, but I did my best, and it really turned me on to it. It took a while, but I got in shape enough, did some classes at my local gym, and now that I hang around the area a lot more, I've been coming here more and more. $15 is rough for a drop in, so I always take advantage of their class packs. Starting out, they (at least used to) have a 3 for $25, and now definitely have a $25 for 30 days unlimited. I always watch Groupon and Living Social, and for $25 have been able to get five classes and for $20 got a pack through MetaBody that allowed 5 classes there as well. Plus I recently attended their yearly Gala and got 8 classes for $45. Next week, they have a free class every day but Saturday, as well. I guess you can say that I'm set for quite a few months! I usually catch the later 8:15 classes on Monday and Wednesday due to my busy work schedule. They might be a little more beginner, but that doesn't mean that you won't leave with one hell of a workout (feeling great) and if you're anything like me, drenched in lovely sweat - as wet as if you just got out of a pool, minus the nasty chemicals! I'm still recovering from a motorcycle accident a year ago, but I can do everything, and most of the optional stuff (lost my back bend that I could do before shoulder surgery, sadly) in the class that I've been attending. I can't wait to get a chance to hit some of the more challenging ones soon! On that note, if you have back pain - like in my case with three herniated disks in the mid and lower region - then you want to try this. After starting back up - even infrequently - I've found that I've had to take pain meds far less often and can make it much further into my extremely-long often 12 hour days and 1.5-2 hours driving in the car in a single day. A real hell of a kudos to them for that! You can also buy everything you need here. I was gifted my Manduka mat that will last me until I die - it has a lifetime warranty that I will likely never have to use. I later gifted one back and bought myself a rug-type mat to cover my normal yoga mat that helps with sweaty slippage (sweat enhances the grip instead of making it slippery). My lady has also bought her fancy yoga shorts there, which were a little pricey, but she says were worth every penny. It's too bad she didn't catch them for 40% off at the recent sale, but giving money to the lovely peeps at CPY never makes me feel bad. I can't wait till my next class on Monday night. I go in completely worn out, and I come out also worn out, but in a completely different way - feeling relaxed, invigorated and as if I can conquer the world! I'm sure there are other great studios out there in Orlando too (watch for reviews from me in 2013!), but you can't go wrong at College Park Yoga! read more

I absolutely love College Park Yoga. I have been going there for almost a year. I always feel great after a sweaty session of power yoga. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and Theresa, Calvin, and the other instructors make everyone feel at home. They encourage you to challenge yourself but rest when needed and to be kind to your body. I know I have increased my flexibility tremendously by practicing yoga at CPY. It has also changed my attitude and gotten me interested on why those who practice yoga regularly seem so much happier and at peace. It is not only a great workout but also a therapeutic hour and a half where nothing else matters but the practice in which you are in. It is definitely challenging and a great workout, which is what I love about it. They are located right in the heart of College Park and are moving soon just down the street, across from Edgewater High School. Calvin and T are the finest yoga instructors I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. I've been practicing over 15 years and done health club classes and other private studios. The practice at College Park Yoga is very deep and challenging. Calvin and T are very attentive offering individual guidance for poses and breathing. There are reminders to breathe and rest as your body requires. It doesn't feel like a competition but a moving meditation. This is Ashtanga yoga so the movement is constant. You will sweat but your body will thank you with deep relaxation afterwards. read more

It's hard and requires patience. But it's a real yoga practice so if that's what you're looking for this is the place for you. If you have the discipline and desire to practice yoga, this is a five star joint and you will change as a result of a regular practice here. Calvin and Theresa are totally dedicated. If you're looking for hip-hop yoga, this isn't for you. If you're looking to be distracted from yourself or to do half pilates, this isn't for you. But if you want a meditative, rigorous studio, check it out. I agree with the person who said that the Saturday morning is a great starter class and you should be aware that some days are more intense than others and child's pose and resting if you're new is a good thing. I really love this place. I'm sad to see the negative reviews because my experiences have been nothing but positive over the past month. Theresa and Calvin are wonderful instructors and extremely welcoming. I felt that coming to CPY was a real change from the other classes I've taken at gyms in the past. Rather than being forceful about holding poses or creating a tense environment, CPY provides a relaxing, calm place to practice yoga regardless of your athletic abilities, flexibility, shape, or age. Yes, the instructors do talk you through the classes, but I personally enjoy what they have to say and have learned a lot from them. They encourage participants to take the classes at their own pace, take breaks when needed, and to enjoy the experience. I am not someone who is in great shape, and I'm not a seasoned yoga practitioner. But I feel extremely welcome at CPY, and it seems that people of much higher abilities than mine enjoy it as well. I'd encourage anyone interested to come to the Community Yoga Class on Saturdays at 9. It's $5, a price you can't beat, and it will give you a taste of what CPY is all about. This is the best place for all levels of yoga practicioners! I have learned so much about breathing and mental discipline from Calvin and Theresa. They keep classes balanced so anyone from beginner to the most advanced can get the practice they need. I especially like that they help you position yourself in poses to get the most from the posture. The moment you enter the studio you are in a still and quiet space. College Park yoga is my sanctuary. I've never taken a yoga classes like these before. If is definitley challenging and may not be for everyone but I absolutely adore it. The emphasis is on focusing on breath let everything else melt away and be truly in the present moment. Poses are secondary to breath. Theresa and Calvin are so sweet and encouranging and they come by and make the slightest adjustments to your posture that completely transform the experience. It is hot. You will sweat. CPY has been my favorite yoga studio for 12 years! I first started attending classes when they were located on Smith St. I had never done much yoga before, and I was quite out of shape. I could've gotten scared off right then and there, because there were some serious yogis in that class! However, Theresa and Calvin kept repeating that yoga is not about comparing yourself with the person next to you who may have been practicing for their whole lives. It's about keeping your eyes on your own mat, both literally and figuratively. These words, along with many other of their wise insights have gotten me thru many a difficult time. I call CPY my spiritual haven. The great benefit was, after continuing regularly, I got stronger and stronger! So not only was it good for my soul, but I also got in the best shape of my life! We moved away to NJ in 2006, but I have to say, I never again found another studio as special as CPY. Theresa and Calvin really hone in on what's important. There are no mirrors to distract. There is no emphasis on show off moves. It's just yoga pure, and each individual is on his/her own yoga journey. It's a very zen approach. I find utmost peace here. That is why when we moved back to Orlando in 2012, we decided to move to College Park. Not only is the neighborhood lovely, but we are right down the street from my favorite yoga studio ever. Not my style of a studio, but I can't completely hate on it. I really wanted to love it because it's in my neighborhood, and the Saturday community class is only $10, but it was an odd experience. Now I am not an "all-knowing yogi", and I would consider myself just a basic practicer (once a week), but the lingo used and the set up of the class was definitely not something I've experienced before. The class was very crowded, which left for little space in between mats and made me feel a little too close to others. The instructor kept talking the entire time during the practice. The lights stayed ON (weird, not relaxing!!) and there was no music or background noise to play as a relaxing touch. No oils at the end, and it actually didn't even smell like a yoga studio...you know that soft and warm aroma of essential oils. It just isn't the "typical" sort of yoga experience. It is not about the physical yoga movements. This is my sacred area, the place I visit when the world stops making sense, and Calvin and Theresa help me rebalance. There is yoga, there is breath, there is love, there is sweat, there is fun (they have a quirky sense of humor which I love ) a place for everyone. Judgment, envy is left at the door which is shut tightly so it does not creep in. The only thing not tolerated is looking around and trying to compete on who gets into which pose lol.. Everyone has their own immense world on their yoga mat. The synergy of breath, movement, some philosophy some laughter creates MAGIC! Even when I am writing this review I feel a sense of peace thinking about their amazing studio which is spacious - not cramming 12 people in a 10X10 room with NO windows - very nicely decorated and even has some windows where I sometimes drift into the little branches of the tree outside. Caught the previous reviewer's comment about other negative reviews, so I didn't scan any further because I wanted to give my honest, unbiased review. I live in College Park and love yoga but wasn't too keen on the idea of power yoga from what I'd read but had purchased a Groupon on a whim since it's so close to my house. The couple who runs the studio seem very nice and have great intentions but I think their marketing and approach could be a little more palatable. During the one class I went to with my friend, I found him a little brusque and not your typical, warm yoga instructor. I also receive their email blasts which are a little bit intimidating between the "Yoga for Wimps" class and their Raw/Burn/whatever program. The class itself had quite a spectrum of fitness levels and as with every other yoga class I've ever taken, people moved in and out of child's pose frequently to accomodate their own level of fitness and pace. Yet, I felt like Calvin pushed a little too hard though for what was billed as a beginner class. Clearly, there were advanced students in attendance but when something is ascribed the "beginner" label, you shouldn't be guiding into advanced poses with no alternative offered. Yoga students quickly learn that it isn't about competition but it's not exactly fair to tailor a beginner class to a few advanced students. That left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't been back since. For the record, since I moved to Orlando, I have been a student of Shine On and know the owner and manager, both of whom have amazing, positive and welcoming energy, as does the Shine On studio. In comparison, CPY came off a little bit snooty and a tad bit cold with almost no spiritual energy. To be fair, that could be because it's a "Power Yoga" discipline rather than Hatha and Ashtanga, like Shine On (depending on the teacher). read more

I went here a few times, but the owners seemed like weird cult leaders with big egos. I've done yoga all over and this is the first place I felt was creepy. I felt like I was being interviewed when I walked in to see whether I could practice there. The setting isn't peaceful, but more like cattle being herded through poses. I was really happy to find College Park Yoga after my previous studio changed ownership. I like straight up, real yoga with no gimmicks or distractions. CPY has a great space and Teresa and Calvin are super great people. I feel well cared for as a student and the love doesn't stop when class is over. The location works for me because one of the class times during the week is 6:30 so I never feel rushed coming from work. They offer special workshops and interesting classes in addition to the standard schedule (some even involve eating!!!). I've started taking some of these and feel they enhance my understanding of yoga and are just fun ways to get to know the teachers and other students better. read more

I have been going to CPY for more than 5 years. I love the emphasis on all aspects of yoga, breath-work, mind and body. It is so much more than just a work out. Theresa and Calvin are always welcoming and knowledgeable. They spend time helping with alignment during the class, which I find very helpful especially as a beginner. There is a set pattern with some variation in this particular style of yoga. The studio is large and clean, never smells musty or sweaty. They do start 10-15 minutes after the schedule, so I just expect it and adjust accordingly. I highly recommend this studio! read more

My stuff was stolen while I was in a class. I stopped at CPY on my way to a cafe to get some work done, so I had my shoulder bag with phone, computer, etc. Being on a bicycle I had to bring my things inside. Not knowing that CPY doesn't lock the front doors during class (and doesn't have anyone watching the front desk), but knowing that there was hot air and a vaporizer pumping away in the studio (both things that technological devices don't pair well with) I put my bag next to the shelf with the sign that said "bags" on it. There was no posted warning that my stuff may not be secure inside the building. When I walked out of the studio my bag was simply gone without a trace. I went to the desk to inform the owner Calvin, who didn't quite understand me at first. As he got the idea he said I should call the police. I told him my phone was in the stolen bag. About that time another woman said her sunglasses were gone, but she didn't stick around to say more. After I spoke with the police, Calvin did guide me to the nearby dumpsters to see if I could find my bag, and he did drive around the neighborhood a bit while I biked around, both in a fruitless search to spot my bag or anyone suspicious (the owner of the neighboring shop had spoken to a guy giving off bad vibes an hour before, but couldn't really describe him). When we called it quits I asked Calvin if the shop had insurance that may help cover my loss, he said to email them. I did about two hours later when I got to a computer I could use. Three days later I had no response, so I called. Calvin said he hadn't seen my email, gave me a micro-lecture on how 7-11 isn't responsible for your stuff if you set it down on a shelf in the minimart, and said he'd let me know about the insurance. A week after all of my stuff was stolen from CPY I got an email telling me it was a misfortune, and reminding me that the waiver I signed to practice yoga absolved them of any responsibility. My question about their insurance was completely ignored. I told them they should at least put up signs warning people, rather than just a sign inviting people to store their bags on the shelf. I told them that I still had a week left - already paid for - of my initial three week trial, but that I would never be back because I would always be glancing back at the studio doors to see if anyone was in the lobby on the other side, going through peoples things. Knowing now that they don't lock their door, I don't know how anyone else practices yoga there without thinking the same thing throughout class. read more

Calvin and Theresa are serious about yoga in the most encouraging and welcoming way possible. Classes are challenging, but low-pressure and full of people at all different levels. C and T are typically both in the studio to offer adjustments, spending several moments with you helping you understand how you can modify or get deeper in the pose depending on what your body needs. The practice space is large and orderly. Classes are well-attended, but there's no need to arrive super early to jockey for space because the room is so big. I recommend College Park Yoga for anyone who wants to advance their practice by improving their fundamentals. read more

Very warm and friendly place. The owners are awesome! They allow you to go at your own pace and suggest very helpful modifications during class to make sure you are comfortable and not injuring yourself.
