So, this was a great experience. Compared to other escape rooms I've done, honestly this was a ~luxury~ escape room experience. Sure it's a little bit more expensive but it's definitely 100% worth it. Great location and view, the waiting room is really cozy and there are games all around, so don't be afraid to show up half an hour early and get your brain pumping. We did the Retreat as a group of 3 friends plus two other random people, and it was honestly just a really well done game. Clever puzzles and good storyline, as well as really high quality setup. Other escape rooms I've been to look a little rough around the edges but this one was top notch. At the end they have a bunch of props and you get to take home a printed photo! Came here for a birthday party, never been here before but I had been to Teatro the restaurant located downstairs. Pretty cool they have multiple floors with the different rooms you can do. Our room was "Crush Depth" this is one of the harder rated ones if you look on their website. I would have liked maybe a little more background on the room before heading into it, I wasnt really sure was the scenario was. But it was really immersive and the quality of the room and clues seemed very high in comparison to others I've been to. The clues were not really straightforward at times so it was definitely challenging. We had a huge group of like 8 people it was a little crowded at first but once we made it out of the first stage it opened up a bit more. Our game master was John and he was so helpful when giving us hints when we were really struggling. We completed the room and survived! read more

Hard to find place when using the GPS but it's between the theater and teatro (restaurant). The place looks clean and comfortable. The staffs were friendly, (helped us find the area!) Informative, and welcoming. Our room was 'The Hustler' and we teamed with a family of five. The room had challenging puzzles and it followed a theme for what the story was about (clever!). I've only done one escape room before and left thinking that 30 dollars for one hour was way too pricey. Plus, I'm the kind of guy to just kinda sit back and look around for random clues helping whenever I can because I'm not too interested in getting anxiety from the time limit haha. However, trapology really exceeded my expectations. The main waiting room area was very nice with a great view of Boston Commons and some games to play while you wait for the room to be set up. There is an entertaining pre-video before the room and then you're ready to get started. My friends and I did the Drunk Tank room which had a 19% success and had a great time. Without giving too much away, the room was well decorated and had a very eerie feeling since you're in a jail cell type situation with sounds and decorations to feel uneasy. We were all challenged and super into the experience to the point that voices were raised but all in good fun. Unfortunately we had to use clues (they make you all dance to get ome of three clues) but managed to escape with a minute left to spare thankfully. When you finish they let you take a photo booth picture to keep so that was cool but what really ended the night on a high note was that we ended up seeing Gordan Hayward and some other Celtics players who were using the room after us! So you might get a chance to meet some local celebrities like we did. Overall, It was an unforgettable experience that I hope to take part in again. read more

Pretty darn fun, went for a company outing. We lost (I blame the slow and old seniors lol). There are 2 options, Drunk Tank and a Gambling one (I think, because I was in the drunk one). You're basically in jail and have to break out.They give you 3 hints and all you gotta do is oogie boogie your way for one. Also, if the lighting is too dark for the old, you can request to turn up the brightness. Staff was super helpful and explained everything very well. Their intro video is very funny too. read more

I had a few hours to kill before my flight and with nothing else better to do, I decided to swing by Trapology to play a room (alone. Yes, I'm weird.). Unfortunately, I had misread the room occupancy for Crush Depth and thought there were others already signed up for that room when it turned out it would have been only me. When I got there, they told me Crush Depth was their hardest room (or at least physically impossible with just one person due to a certain puzzle in the room?) and suggested Steampunk Train instead. As a bonus, they were willing to start Steampunk Train immediately. I didn't escape (to be expected; the room is rated for 2-5 after all. Probably solved a bit over 60% of the puzzles), but the puzzles were all pretty decent with the exception of one puzzle that I would consider to be more of a grind/annoying logic puzzle than an escape room puzzle. *grumbles* :P Hat tip to my Game Masters Patrick and Rachel. read more

Really enjoyed our Trapology experience. I had been to another "escape the room" company before, but Trapology surpassed them. It's located conveniently (near Park Street T stop), has a great lobby area, clean facilities, photo booth at the end, and the game itself was a huge challenge. Went with 3 friends, and there was another group of people in our "Drunk Tank" scenario, making us a total of 9. The game itself was difficult - we managed to escape with 7 minutes to spare - the puzzles were a huge challenge and require "out of the box" thinking. Things are never as they seem. You have to enter the game with a curiosity mindset, and be willing to work with others. My 3 friends and I talked about our experience for hours afterwards. The coolest thing about our "escape" game was that it teaches you a sociology lesson: every person has a different learning style. Every person has a different way of absorbing & gathering information, of viewing challenges, of communicating. All of these personality and learning types come together in this game -- you need people who are different, in order to "escape." It helps to work with people who think totally different than you do. Really great time - we'll be going back! read more

We did The Retreat with Kevin, who was so incredibly great/helpful and he even spent some time with us after to answer questions and just chat about our experience! We've already told a bunch of our friends about this place and are planning to go back and try another room soon. HIGHLY recommend! I was impressed with how well organized it was and the story was really fun to follow. I will say that I saw in some reviews that the strobes in this room were intense - I didn't mind them at all, but if you're sensitive to flashing lights, I believe you can just ask the staff to turn them off. Wow! We played Crush Depth and were blown away. There is incredible attention to detail, great puzzles, and you get a ridiculously fun moment that you've probably never imagined. The people were also really lovely and great customer service. They didn't have the game available we wanted at the day we planned to go, but with a quick call they were able to switch out another available spot for the game we wanted. We will absolutely be back to play more of their games (and also picked up their tabletop game, Space Corps, to play at home)! read more

As of Dec 2019 I've done all of the 6 rooms in Trapology. It's overall a very nice experience. I can't go into the details of any game, but they all do require somewhat experienced players to succeed, as the puzzles are diverse and quite nicely thought out. To escape in time, you need to have a veteran with you. Different rooms are added over time, some newer and more advanced (both in tech use/effects, and in the puzzles) are very well-done and competitive with the best ones I've played in NYC. Those ones are: Boobie trap, Crush Depth, and Steampunk. This doesn't mean the original ones are not as good. There are some good scares and creepy/spook effects in these. The puzzles are not easy either, but do-able. I recommend Drunk Tank as it takes up a lot of space so it's most suited for large groups and can work well with strangers in group. Another one that works for large group or strangers is the Hustler and Steampunk. Sometimes puzzles get solved more efficiently in small groups, especially with the more linear ones. I highly recommend private parties under 5 for Boobie trap, Crush Depths, and the Retreat. You will thoroughly enjoy Boobie trap with your friends, or even family (the in-laws lol) ;) For dates, book Boobie trap! Great place to take visitors from out of town. They are gonna love it. In a way I'm sad I finished all rooms. Hopefully they bring new games in soon. Also, shout out to Patrick and Karen tonight. You guys are great! read more

Had a really great time engaging in "The Retreat" escape room at Trapology, and there will be some MILD SPOILERS (nothing giving away the puzzles), so if you'd rather get in there with zero expectations, don't read the rest of this review! The person giving us the spiel to the room could have been a little more engaged (not feel like he was trying to memorize something) and it was a little odd that they did their spiel for every room in the main waiting room space. Because my friends and I had arrived a little early, we ended up having to sit in on the intro to another escape game. It would have been better if the other groups were brought to their room (or in front of it) to receive the introductions and the background stories. The Retreat is NOT for the faint of heart. I would strongly dissuade any children from participating in this room, as there are some graphic scenes, themes, and rooms. The set pieces of the rooms were very well done and did a great job of immersing you in the camping atmosphere. Most of the puzzles naturally progressed to the next, except one puzzle that we had some difficulty with. Luckily, the clue system helped us out and we were able to finish the room! I really enjoyed the room designs and the puzzles and would love to try out a different room next time! read more

We did the drunk tank escape room. It starts off with some authenticity, including a jail cell and handcuffs. We had 10 people and it felt a little cramped, but was great to able to include everyone. We had an awesome time for my birthday get together. Booking online is a breeze. The game it self was awesome, everyone had an amazing time. Many cant wait until we go at it again as they will be opening a new room soon. This was my first live escape game so nothing to compare it too, only that it's starting to show a bit of wear. The puzzles were great and you'll enjoy watching your friends shine, I sure did. We were so close but couldn't figure out the last puzzle to make it out, tricky...tricky! I would have preferred a bit more communication after booking like especially since I did note it was a special occasion I ended up calling them to make sure all is a go! I've experienced many 'escape the room' type locations, and Trapology may be one of my favorites. From start to finish, the entire operation was well-managed, well-run, and a ton of fun. Upon walking into their space right off the Commons, I was impressed by how nice and spacious their layout was. Tons of place to hang out with the team of ten with whom you'll be locked up for an hour. The staff made the experience even better, too. They were thorough, friendly, and timely to ensure we all knew what we had to do and got us playing the game right on time. I won't go into too much about the details of the room we chose, but it was equal parts fun and equal parts difficult. The game was themed perfectly to make us feel as if were actually in the scenario put in front of us, and we were challenged to find our way out - which eventually did! Overall, a great game which I'd recommend for locals and tourists alike. I'm looking forward to going back and checking out their other rooms! read more

I've done over 40 escape rooms in the US and this review is written in the context of the others. I did Drunk Tank so I'm reviewing that one here. My girlfriend and I picked a late night spot, and since no one else booked for the same time, we were actually able to do Drunk Tank with just a team of two. We escaped! :) PRODUCTION VALUE 5/5 This escape room is very spacious and occupies multiple rooms in the building. The team here makes very good use of all of the space in the rooms of the Drunk Tank, such that even 10 people could fit in it comfortably. The entry lobby was recently refurnished and has some fun games as well to pass the time while you're waiting for your turn. The rooms are decorated appropriately, so that the first room looks somewhat like a believable jail cell, and the subsequent rooms are also believable. All of this added to the theme and helped move along the light story. The hint system is clean and well-done as well, which all put together makes this a fairly polished escape room. PUZZLE QUALITY 5/5 Good puzzles - most of them involved finding something hidden in a particular place in the room and then figuring out how to put them together in the appropriate way. There are some well-executed puzzles where objects are just out of reach as well - I'll refrain from talking more about it in order to avoid spoilers. OVERALL EXPERIENCE 5/5 This is a well put-together room with a simple theme that ties itself well across the multiple rooms. The staff is fun, the waiting room is recently remodeled with fun games, and the location is perfect. Highly recommended escape room! TIPS (no spoilers): Fill out the waiver ahead of time to avoid a delay since there are one two electronic waiver signing stations at the place. In fact, arrive early since they have a fun spacious waiting room with plenty of games. This room is doable if you have a team of only 2 people, however, that's only recommended if both of you have had plenty of room escaping experience before. TIPS (mild spoilers): You are "physically constrained" at the start of the escape room, but you don't have to be during the whole experience. ;) read more

Here's the fundamental problem with Trapology's escape games: You might not solve your room. This may lead to obsessive behavior in which you relive the last 15 minutes of your time repeatedly, kicking yourself for where you went wrong. You can never re-do it, of course, because at the end they tell you where you messed up, and then you're just a failure, and can never try it again. We had a fantastic time! Group of 9 people, celebrating a birthday. Not everyone knew each other going in, but coming out, we had totally bonded and had a great time. Staff on hand were extremely friendly and kind, and the space (although literally being renovated while we were there) was gorgeous. I especially appreciated the seating area while we waited. If I could do my bachelorette party over again, I definitely would've added this to the mix! I've done Escape the Room's "Office" puzzle, and I'll say that Trapology's "Drunk Tank" was unquestionably better in terms of complexity, theme, and design. Trapology's games are well crafted with amusing premises. The games rely on both physical and mental teamwork to get everyone through the challenges. My qualms about most other escape room games are that they tend to have a low production feel to it and they throw all the puzzles at you all at once. Trapology, on the other hand, has legit props that feel authentic and the game flow is easy to track. I played the Drunk Tank a little while back and had such a good time so I brought some more friends along for The Hustler. The lobby area has a speakeasy theme with an awesome view of the Common (great for people watching). read more

A group of friends and I went to Trapology Boston today and unfortunately I have a fractured foot and was gonna sit this one out. I was going to wait in the waiting room for my friends as they did the escape room but the staff accommodated me and put a chair in the room so I could watch and still be with my friends. It was so sweet, they definitely didn't have to do that for me but they did and I appreciate it so much. The experience was still so fun although I couldn't participate fully.
