The food was very nice. No English menu was available but the staff kindly explained us about every dish.

4 Leoni was highly recommended to us by a friend who actually owns an Italian restaurant in California - so we thought it had to be great. We were disappointed from the moment we sat down. The outside patio is on a busy Piazza - and not one of the attractive historic ones. We asked if we could change to an inside table (much cuter on the inside with great kitchen smells) - we were told absolutely no even though it never got more than half full on the inside. We were then ignored for about 20 minutes and weren't even offered water. Finally got a teenager for a waiter who spoke passable English (menu is entirely in Italian) but couldn't give us much in the way of translations or recommendations. Our wine order was frowned upon by the owner but didn't offer an alternative ("I don't like that wine") - so why have it on your menu? We shared a pear pasta and lasagna - which were both good - and then ordered 2 large Florentine steaks to share. The steaks were disappointing - a lot of gristle and unevenly cooked - and we had had a fabulous one a week earlier at a Montepulciano restaurant so we knew what it should taste like. We were made to feel so special at multiple restaurants throughout our trip that the entire experience at 4 Leoni was a terrible letdown for all of us. Maybe an off night for them but there were too many negatives. read more

My daughter told me that if I'm ever in Florence, I would certainly have to try this restaurant. We are in Florence so we thought we would give it a try. I'm so glad we did! We started off with the house salad , which was a nice mix of greens, carrots, radishes, and tomatoes and leeks. Italian vegetables just taste better, mostly because they only serve what's in season . Olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. Very tasty. I ordered the house specialty , which is a pear ravioli. I can't describe it because it is so uniquely delicious! My wife had a flat pasta ragu (meat sauce) and it too is wonderful. Just absolutely delicious. For dessert, we had The in house made cheesecake with chocolate sauce. I've had cheesecake from all over and this one was as good as and I've ever had. Reasonable pricing and first class service too! We ate here three times on our recent stay at a VRBO just off the square on which 4 Leoni is situated. Among the excellent preparations we enjoyed were Osso Bucco, Pasta with pear and asparagus, Lasagna, Eggplant parmesan, roasted vegetables, and grilled chicken. You can translate this back into Italian if you wish!! The Tiramisu and the Cheesecake were best we had in Italy. The wait staff is great. Why 4 stars? Because the pear pasta was the star of the show. --- --- --- My mother-in-law is a very picky eater, but loves Italy. When she knew we were going to Florence, she insisted that we had to visit 4 Leoni. Because I've witnessed her pickiness up close and personal for many meals, I didn't exactly hold her recommendation in the highest regard. Maybe I should have though? She almost hates all food, but loves this, so maybe they are onto something here? She loved the pear pasta and so does my wife, so that was the primary reason we visited. And I have to say, the MIL was correct. This was one of the best dishes we had during our two days in Florence. Don't come here without ordering this! I was also really excited to try the Octopus, but was a disappointed in how it was prepared. It was cooked in breading, which ended up tasting decently enough but I didn't understand why Octopus would need bread crumbs when it's so great without that. We also ordered the ragu, which I felt was fine, but my wife was in heaven while eating it. It may just be more due to the fact that this isn't my kind of dish in general. And then we finished with tiramisu, which was excellent. The service was not very attentive, nor particularly friendly, but if that's the price to pay for this pear pasta, it's absolutely worth it. read more

This was, unfortunately, our least favorite dining experience during a 10-day trip to Italy. While the food was good, the service left much to be desired--we felt more like an inconvenience than guests. Despite recommendations from well-traveled friends and making a reservation well in advance, the experience did not justify the 25-30 minute trip across the river. After being seated, we waited over 20 minutes for a drink and had to request a waiter. When I asked for an English menu, the response from the host was dismissive. Our simple pasta dishes took nearly an hour to arrive--and were served at different times. Service throughout the evening was inattentive and unaccommodating. 4 Leoni is situated on a lovely square in Florence and the atmosphere alone is captivating, especially with the hopping Gelateria across the way. The salad had all the elements I love but lacked cohesion. The cheese and pesto were strong but without an adequate ratio of dressing to fixings, it felt like a half baked idea. read more

Our first dinner after literally arriving straight from the airport on Christmas Day, and was still one of my top favorites. We had a reservation for 8:30 pm, but still had to wait a while for a table. The server was very sweet and brought us complimentary prosecco while we waited outside in the cold. I was very surprised to see people eating outside in 40 degree weather under the heaters. It was way too cold for us. Once seated inside, the ambiance was warm and decorated beautifully for Christmas. Our server was great! The menu is not in English and only a few people seemed to know some English. We used google translate to decipher a few menu items, and didn't have any issues. I ordered a carafe of wine not realizing it would be 3 glasses full for only 9 euro. What a deal. And it was of course incredible Chianti. We started with a salad and brushetta with olive oil. The olive oil - OMG it had a bite and was delicious. I ordered the pear fiocchetti and it lived up to the hype. I enjoyed every single bite. The creamy savory sauce with the sweet filling was perfect. My boyfriend got the tagliatalle in wild boar ragu and it was also amazing. So savory. We loved watching all of the dishes get passed out of the kitchen. I added a side of fried artichokes, and it was a huge portion. I ate a few and took the rest to go, and they were soft and fresh. We finished with the creamiest tiramisu. We really enjoyed every moment of this special Christmas dinner. I highly recommend this place and will absolutely go again in the future! read more

One of my absolute favorites! I recommend starting with prosciutto e melone and then the fiocchetti di pera and either a main course or dessert. The chocolate on the cheesecake is pretty rich so if you're into that you'll love it. The tiramisu was also very good! There is both indoor and outdoor dining but here I prefer indoor. There's AC which isn't always the case and it just looks cute. And the service is great! This is definitely a place you want to make reservations for and even without it they were able to find space for me and my bf and they were very nice about it. read more

The pear pasta and gnudi were outstanding and I highly recommend. All Americans are sat in way back and took 32 minutes to get waited on (not even drinks offered) and we had reservations. So they need to work on this. That said the food was excellent and once we were waited on our server from Ghana was very nice. read more

We had a great meal at 4 Leoni! We had been recommended to this spot by a few friends so got reservations in advance. We were told we HAD to get the famous pasta dish here - a creamy asparagus sauce with pear-filled pasta. And we were glad we did - it was so rich, unique and flavorful! We also got the ratatouille which was a nice dose of veggies on an otherwise carb-heavy trip, and fried zucchini flowers which were unique. It was lovely to sit outside in the square, very peaceful! Our server was prompt and food came out much quicker than other spots we dined at. It does seem like everyone in the US is recommending this spot so we were surrounded by only American tables, so it's not necessarily a hidden gem hole-in-the-wall, but that pasta dish is delish! read more

Ordered the pear raviolini because I had loved it at another restaurant (Coquinarius) and the same dish here was such a disappointment. The sauce was unappealingly thick. Also, we had to send it back because it was not "al dente" as the waiter suggested, it was undercooked bordering on crunchy. I'm posting side by side pics to show the difference. I ended up "wiping" the pieces of pasta along the edge of the plate to get that pungent goop off of my food. I hope they improve this dish. From Livorno, we took a 1 1/2 he train ride East to la città dei Giglio (the city of the Lily), Florence in the heart of Tuscany. Florence was the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, contains a lot of Renaissance art in the museums, and was once the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. After we dropped our bags off at the airBNB, we walked one block on a narrow cobblestone street to T4L. They specialize in Tuscan dishes like ribollita, bistecca alla Fiorentina and rabbit. It is tucked away on a small street, near the Pitti Palace and the Ponte Vecchio. I ordered the polpo on top of a pea sauce (sorry, one tentacle is missing bc ITC grabbed it b4 I snapped a pic - LOL), and a salad. Mija and ITC ordered a couple of the local pastas (not pictured). I had octopus 3-4 times during my trip, and T4L's was the best. It was super fresh, grilled to perfection and the pea sauce was genius. Mija and ITC really liked their pastas as well. Regarding the ambiance, its al fresco and good for people watching. Likewise the service fr Byron was friendly & warm. He hails fr Albania, but obvi speaks Italian, as well as English & Spanish, and his mother tongue. I found out he learned Spanish while he worked in AZ. BTW, Italians seem to be more friendly when you can speak a little Italian, but seem even more friendly when you can speak an EU language besides English. T4L was a great start to our eating adventures in Florence. More to come! read more

There's great and there's insanely great. 4 Leoni falls into the second category and was one of the best meals we had on our Northern Italy trip. It was a recommendation from the food guide and it really worked out well. We arrived at 9:30 pm without a reservation and were pleasantly greeted and shown to a table immediately. The highlights of the meal were the house chianti, the amazing pasta with ragu sauce and when we saw another table have it for dessert, we also had a liqueur with strawberries and cream. Service was fantastic and friendly. Our waitress spoke terrific English and the meal went off without a hitch. Five stars plus for 4 Leoni.
