There's great and there's insanely great. 4 Leoni falls into the second category and was one of the best meals we had on our Northern Italy trip. It was a recommendation from the food guide and it really worked out well. We arrived at 9:30 pm without a reservation and were pleasantly greeted and shown to a table immediately. The highlights of the meal were the house chianti, the amazing pasta with ragu sauce and when we saw another table have it for dessert, we also had a liqueur with strawberries and cream. Ordered the pear raviolini because I had loved it at another restaurant (Coquinarius) and the same dish here was such a disappointment. The sauce was unappealingly thick. Also, we had to send it back because it was not "al dente" as the waiter suggested, it was undercooked bordering on crunchy. I'm posting side by side pics to show the difference. I ended up "wiping" the pieces of pasta along the edge of the plate to get that pungent goop off of my food. I hope they improve this dish. Wow!!!!! This restaurant in Firenze is awesome. We had a great meal and Rosalina our server was fantastic. They serve authentic dishes here and the food was so fresh and so delicious. From the antipasti through the first and second courses the food was outstanding. We had a large party (7) and all enjoyed it very much. The steak was cooked just under medium rare but, even the folks who like their steaks cooked medium enjoyed it. We went with table wines (Chianti) to pair with the meal. That was delicious as well. We reserved this place after hearing from various people just how amazing it was. I made a reservation about 3 weeks before we arrived to Florence and this was our first dinner here. When we were here (in July 2023) it was scorching hot in Florence. As we arrived for our reservation I asked for an inside table but was told they only had tables outside. My wife, having heard that this place is a must, agreed to sit outside. Within the first 7 minutes we were not only sweating due to the heat but the jerks next to us finished their meal and thought it appropriate to smoke cigarettes and make our experience that much worse. When I asked the hostess to get us a table inside she was extremely rude and dismissive. The was an older blonde lady, maybe the manager or the owner, who knows, but she certainly needed to get her arrogance in check. After I told my wife I wanted to leave she went inside and dropped some big attorneys name she knows who eats there all the time. Within 3 minutes we were being escorted to a very nice inside table. WTF?? I hate that! Food was decent, wine was great, attitude of our servers was good too. We had a young lady who didn't know much as she kept asking one of the older servers questions every time we asked something. She was nice but it got a little annoying. so the next time I wanted to order a bottle of wine, I simply asked her to get the older server to come. All in all this place is way to hyped up and it's gone to management's head. Would I come here again, not proactively as there are many amazing little places in Florence. If you are reading this (management), you guys should really go back to your roots and back to hospitality. Having to drop a name to get things just to be taken care of properly just says way too much about how view yourselves and your customers. Skip this overhyped place with average food. read more

This is my second time back! Had the Florentine steak this time. It was seasoned very well. The steak is cooked rare- just FYI. Im someone who likes well done so this took a little getting used to but I had to try it because when in Rome- or Florence in this case. TLDR: The man seating people was intentionally dismissive and rude perhaps because we were American and wearing t-shirts instead of button downs. We arrived on time for our reservation, he saw that we had a reservation, and then intentionally ignored us for the next 15 minutes while we stood waiting to be seated. The Whole Story: Found Trat 4 Leoni on a food blog, and dragged my fiancé all the way from the Duomo to try it out. It was 8:00pm, and we had just climbed the dome. Great views - highly recommend - so by the time we arrived at 4 Leoni, we were famished. We asked if they could seat 2 people, and the head seating guy (5'9" 165 pounds, dark hair, short-trimmed beard) brought us to a table in the back of the restaurant next to the bathroom and directly in line of the kitchen. It was so loud and cramped that we knew we would never enjoy the meal, so I politely asked if there was another table available, perhaps outside, where it would be less noisy. He shrugged and then looked at the papers in his hand as if he were doing string theory calculus and said it will be an hour. "No problem. We'll come back at 9:30." So we strolled until 9:30 rolled around. We headed back to the restaurant and found the head seating guy. He located our reservation, swiped a line through it with his pencil, and walked away. Not to get menus. Not to clear a table. No no no. He spent the next 5 minutes filling water pitchers and then brought some bread to another table. "They must be really busy", I thought to myself. Then he disappeared outside and started seating people who had just walked up. Still, I waited politely. Maybe he's miffed because we wouldn't sit next to the bathroom? I don't know. We were polite and apologetic when we asked to move, but maybe that's not enough. After another 7 minutes of standing awkwardly inside the door waiting for the guy to even say anything (he had walked by 6 times and never once even made eye contact), I realized that this was him being passive-aggressive. The next time he walked by, I politely asked, "Sir, have you secured a table for our reservation?" He looked at me like I had insulted him, held his hands out as if to tell me to calm down, and walked away. Well, considering he seated at least 8 parties since we arrived for our reservation, I assumed that something about us was not up to his standards. But why not just tell us originally there were no more reservations if you didn't want our business? Instead, you take out petty frustrations about whatever stereotype makes you angry on polite, decent people who just didn't want to sit next to the bathroom? Shame on you. So we left. We found another restaurant where people were friendly and treated us decently. If you were considering eating here, PLEASE CONSIDER EATING ANYWHERE ELSE. I guarantee you can find great food on almost any corner. Don't reward bad behavior. read more

This is a local trattoria on south side of the Arno river near Pitti Palace. It was recommended by my hotel. I made a reservation for 1900 (7pm). Due to some no-shows I was able to sit inside. They have good selection of food but a limited selection of beer (da bere) or wine by the glass (vini a bicchiere). I started with the Antipasto toscano, a meat centric dish with a small amount of pickled vegetables. I then got the Insalata di spinacino fresco con pere (spinach with nuts, apple silces and soft cheese). I added extra virgin olive oil. I paired it with a glass of 2021 Attems Fruili Pinot Grigio. For my pasta dish, I had the Taglierini al funghi porcini. A very flavourable pasta tossed in butter with two types of mushrooms. For dessert I needed a light ending. I normally wouldn't even consider ordering tripe, but I've been pleasantly surprised by it on this Italian adventure. Though the server was quite friendly and genuine, the menu was all in Italian - when all over Italy the rest of the menus are offered in multiple languages. That made it hard to know what to order. The food was just not good. Got the "beef stew" as the server described, and it was two flat pieces of over cooked, grisly beef with some sort of gravy like stuff on top with a side of mushy spinach. 4 Leoni is on the "old" Florence side of the river and has a large outdoor seating area. There is an overall feeling of casual ease. I had a reservation for 7:30. My husband and I stepped into the restaurant interior to check in. When I told the woman who greeted us our reservation time, she looked at her watch and at me. It was maybe four minutes before 7:30, but they were open as there were lots of people already seated, so I wasn't sure what her annoyance was about. Whatever; we got seated and I didn't let it bother me. The 4 Leoni website has a button to translate to English, but the menu is not in English. I whipped out Google translate to help my husband and I navigate and our server was also happy to translate. (The server spoke quickly, so using Google translate is a must.) We ordered fried zucchini flowers, two pasta dishes, and a liter of wine. The wine is so affordable. We got a liter for what we would pay to have a glass in the U.S. and the wine was perfectly drinkable. We also shared a dessert. Everything was tasty and well-prepared. The main challenge at 4 Leoni is that there are a lot of tables as well as some seating for other businesses in the same area, so there tends to always be someone smoking, As a non-smoker, this is always a challenge for me when traveling in Europe. The tables are also close together, so I was praying that no one would light up next to us. 4 Leoni was a very good meal in a bustling outdoor setting. Be prepared to translate the menu if you don't read Italian and be prepared for some smokers around you, but the food is a good value. read more

That dish is the fiocchette - pere e taleggio, which is pasta filled with pear stuffing and served with a cheese and asparagus sauce. This dish stole the show for us - so light & delicious. We also ordered the tortelli mugellani Al sugo toscano (basically a ravioli filled with potatoe mixture served with red meat sauce - insanely good) & the lasagna Al forno. We split all 3 and came close to finishing, but if we had to do it again, would probably skip the lasagna and enjoy the other two unique dishes. After learning about this location as a favorite of the Italian-American chef Guida de Laurentiis, we headed over to 4 Leoni, across the river, in hopes of sampling the acclaimed pear pasta. As we discovered the venue and arrived for lunch, we were originally told that there were no tables available. However, we soon discovered that one of the waiters could accommodate us after all. We are so grateful that Brajram made sure to find a table for my husband, son & I outside in the front. First, cold drinks were in order after an earlier climb of the Campanile's over 400 steps & a walk over the river to the resto. Next, we were advised to have the prosciutto e melone salad, which was delicious, especially as the melon was perfectly ripe and juicy. My husband ordered the spinach, goat cheese & strawberry salad topped with slivers of almonds. Both were perfect for a warm summer day. Next for entrees, we had the pear & gorgonzola pasta, which proved to be a special, unforgettable dish and a must try. The linguine and clams with pesto was tasty and the carbonara was the richest we've ever had. My son devoured his. Mostly, the meal was made enjoyable because of the welcoming & friendly service from our waiter, Bajram, who really connected with us and my son. As an impressive multilingual speaker and well travelled individual, you could tell that he really enjoys people and, thus, we experienced the warmest and most genuine hospitality in over 1 week of meals in both Rome & Florence. A thank you, Bajram, for both making room for us on our last day in Florence & for helping us feel truly at home. I was reminded that friendly & genuinely hospitable service can make an entire experience. Wish we could encounter that more regularly! It was listed on Giada's recommended spots in Florence so I booked a reservation nearly two months in advance, but it seemed like walk-ins didn't have too hard of a time getting a table around 8 pm in early June. The food was delicious--and only 120 Euro for four glasses of wine (the house rose and Chianti were both amazing!), burrata appetizer, rocket salad, pear pasta (get this!!), steak (filet), and dessert and espresso! It's situated on a quiet piazza in the Oltarno area, where "real" Florentines socialize in the evening, so it's not quite as overrun by tourists as on the other side of the river. It has a nice patio for outside dining, where you can watch the world go by. The food is outstanding. We ate there twice, and both times I had the signature pear-stuffed pasta in a sauce of taleggio cheese and asparagus, which is to die for. WE sat inside and were really comfortable, nice and cool on a hot night. We ordered a Ruccola pomodora salad, a mixta salad, and fritta verdure to start. The salads were enough to share and really tasty. Then we had a pasta with clams, which was awesome, a mezzanale parmesan, (eggplant) yummy and our kids had pene pomodoro which was also really tasty. This was only one of two meals on a ten day trip that made me say "oh my god!" Our server (the owner's niece) was an absolute delight and extremely helpful in making recommendations.
