It's been too long to write a review of the best Italian in Nj...and better then all of NYC but maybe a few. I personally like it better then Carbone. My wife and I have been here many times and have never been disappointed.. We are cooks and foodies. if my plate rested more then 3 minutes I can tell. Best in class White Truffle pasta..in the cream sauce style, Veal chop, Black Ink Pasta a rare special..get it...I didn't finish mine just so my son could taste the amazing flavors..that was tough not to finish. Everything is cooked with finesse..nothing clumsy. And always seasoned spot on. Pretty sure I never asked for salt or pepper, ever. And being a BYOB the prices are a tad higher, but I can drink a $50 bottle of French Chablis or Italian Barolo that would normally cost $150 plus tip in a restaurant. Love this place, but been haven't been in a while. Three of us went last night, and was even better than I remember. It's expensive, but it's a bring your own, which helps us because we like to have a few. How lucky, they had fresh soft shell crab, my favorite. They were very large and cooked so well, so juicy. As we sat down they brought fresh hot bread from Balthazar, so good, and some oil. Perfect as we poured out first cocktail. Next we checked out the specials, and they have a lot. Before I went I was going to have a Caesar salad (love it) and pasta w red sauce, but a game time decision with the specials had to change. I shared the Zuppa de clams. This is by far the best red sauce w clams and I love them so I've had quite a few. Quaint. Average in food. We called for reservations 2-3 weeks in advance. Their dinner times fill up fast. We went around 6:30pm. Street parking was hard to find. We parked quite a few blocks down. There's a lot of people outside the restaurant - can be confusing. Upon entering the small space it's packed. We ordered two pastas for about $130. Tonight was our first time to Trattoria Carpaccio and it was excellent. A friend recommended this restaurant and we decided to check it out. We had the Meatball special which were excellent. I was told the Chicken Parm was great but it wasn't on the menus (Regular and Special) I asked and they said they would make upon request. So I had the chicken parm and it was probably the best I've ever had. This place is great and I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes. Utterly mediocre and wildly expensive. Group of 4, expect to pay $80pp for a couple shared apps, 1 salad, 4 entrees. The Apps? Horribly salty and sour baked clams and salty sour blue cheese salad. All greens with a plop of tasteless supermarket cheese. A big dead mush of a meatball, also salty, no texture. The mains? A laughable swordfish special. Looked like the fish you'd get in hospital if you were on an 1800 calorie diabetic diet. Dead white. No sauce. No seasoning. Sitting on wet broccoli rape. A vinegary Chicken scap was decent but it was $42 for a half portion. Could not have been more than a quarter bird. We wisely cut losses and skipped dessert. Our wine was good. While the food was good, the wait service prompt and helpful, my less than stellar reservation was because the special I ordered was almost twice as expensive as anything else on the menu. Now I should have asked the price before ordering but when I did get the dish it came with french fries....what in the world is such an expensive dish doing accompanied by french fries. Seems this is a cost saving for a nice vegetable and potatoes. Oh well, it was on me as well....... but they shouldn't present the specials without the prices. As an aside it is very noisy; the hard surfaces contribute to what make it so loud in a very small restaurant. Hearing your companion is a challenge. read more

Always passed this place and saw how packed it was outside and inside, but after finally coming here...I can see why. This is probably the best Italian restaurant that I have ever been to. I had the truffle ravioli and that was amazing. Also had the fillet fish and half roasted chicken and they were also delicious. Another plus was how friendly the staff was. As others have noted, the restaurant is extremely cagey on the pricing, we were charged $78 and $68 for two middling fish dishes. Not to mention, there were $36 very middling pastas... Almost everyone is in agreement, Trattoria does a great job with food...absolutely superb each time we go there. Now for some suggestions: 1) The noise level in the restaurant is UNBEARABLE! Between the loud music and the crazy small size of the restaurant, I could barely hear my friends the entire night who were sitting right next to me. I get that the place is packed because of the great food, but perhaps adding some cork to the ceilings and the walls would help absorb some of the noise or get rid of the music. I've dined in some of the hottest spots in NYC and you never get this noise level. 2) Should post pricing on "specials board". I get that Grissini and some others also don't tell you the prices of their specials because its a great way of making you spend a lot of money and then getting a little surprise when the check arrives, but doesn't seem right. Sexist owner, 1 hour to get apps, waiter spilled wine, owner's friend berated us. We had 8:30 reservations for my wife's 44th birthday. We arrived promptly at 8:30 and were sat within 5 minutes. We were read specials within 10 min and placed our appetizer order. The waiter proceeded to attempt to fill a wine glass and poured half a bottle of wine on one of our guests and the floor. They apologized - profusely - and offered to replace the glass. 30 min+ after we submitted the app order the waiter came over to confirm our app order (this was an obvious not-so-great sign). Approximately an hour later, our apps arrived. Shrimp avocado was decent, artichoke was fair, beef carpaccio looked good. 30+ minutes post appetizers (1 1/2 - 1 ¾ hr after arriving) one of our guests approaches the owner to ask about the food. It was loud and they were taking closely. One of the patrons, the owner's friend, decides to begin to yell at our guest to "sit down" multiple times. When I told him to stay out of it, he proceeded to verbally threaten me (this is the owner's friend - verbally attacking other patrons because they are complaining about the service). Our food came. No one could enjoy a bite. We're sitting on top of ourselves in this overly cramped restaurant next to what amounts to a neighborhood bully. We get the check, they took off the cost of the appetizers, we pay the bill and leave. The owner proceeds to follow us out - in some attempt to smooth things over - we assume... I express that we're done for the night, don't want to talk anymore, and will be headed home. He insists on only speaking to myself and my other male guest. When my friends wife chimes in with some small detail he becomes very disrespectful to her - dismissing and speaking down to her which is obviously upsetting to my friend. More words are exchanged and we leave. The fact that this owner did not simply have the wherewithal and tact to just let us leave, not personally and seemingly intentionally disrespect a female patron of his restaurant, or apologies for his loudmouth friend is beyond me. I was the designated driver this evening - not having one ounce of alcohol. The clarity of the night is sobering - this is a restaurant with some good dishes, jammed into a deli bodega size whole in the wall, who's owner clearly does not respect - other - women (we see his wife making the rounds and she's seemingly pleasant), who can't control their own friends who attend the restaurant. I've been here on one other occasion and the only complaint id have had is that service is a little slow - that's not the case now. Small cozy BYOB restaurant with awesome staff and welcoming owners. They are so friendly and make you feel like home. Food is though just okay. And the reason for the 3 stars is really the price for the dishes. They are more expensive than some fancy Italian restaurants in the city and portions are half. Some fish and meat are well iver $40-50 and pasta dishes are all above $25 even when they don't contain meat or seafood. And their food isn't bad but I've had better pasta at other local Italian restaurants. With appetizers, entrees and desserts, even if it's BYOB, the bill is outrageous. read more

As a self-declared foodie, I'm so happy to proclaim that this is a much needed, cozy, delicious addition to Englewood and the reason why I love being a local. We finally managed to get a reservation for a Saturday night and while we noticed a party arrive after us, get greeted by the owner and the get seated first, I couldn't complain. I hope to soon become a regular local here to get the extra treatment (we got seated very soon afterwards). The owners seemed to know everyone who walked in; that's the type of experience I strive for as a regular diner! I usually always aim for the seafood specials, but I had a really good feeling that a place like this did simple just right so I went with the thin spaghetti pomodoro with basil and I absolutely loved it!! It just completely hit the spot in flavor, quality, and quantity. My husband got the spaghetti carbonara hoping that it would be similar to what he ate in Rome. It didn't quite hit that level, but it was definitely more authentic than the overly creamy sauce that other restaurants serve. The eggplant rollatini app was cheesy goodness. The vanilla gelato was delicious! And I loved the ByOB option plus the glass of limoncello they served us afterwards. I initially felt really rushed by the server & a level of impatience from him when I couldn't decide on my order, hence 4 stars instead of 5, but by the end of the night the service was attentive and great. Me and my two girlfriends had a reservation the host/owner asked for our name three times we gave the name and were seated. Then his wife comes and tells us they don't have the reservation and she was going to check- she was clearly annoyed at her husband. He comes back to us incredibly agitated telling is we don't have a reservation and my friend said I spoke to a man on Sunday and he said we don't have 7:30pm only 8 o'clock and took her name. He said impossible only my wife and I answer the phone (him being a man- my friend spoke to a man LOL). We then pulled up the phone number and showed him here is the phone call! THAT'S when get got REALLY annoyed and was literally yelling at us. Imagine- three women dressed nicely- have eaten there before no less and he's yelling at us in front of the whole restaurant. He then TOLD us to get the F*** out... I mean it was quite laughable. This owner clearly cannot handle the job of taking reseravtions- then don't do it, hire someone! All he had to say is "I'm sorry we're overbooked here's a gift card" but to tell us we are making the whole conversation up is ludicrous. I do have to say the moment we showed the phone record was when he got REALLY angry and knew we were right ha! This was the first in all three of our lives in all the restaurants we've eaten around the world to experience something like this. After reading other reviews of the owner being racist and incredibly rude, I'm not surprised. I'm sure others have had the similar experience to ours with the owner. I've been coming to Trattoria for years. My family and I have come here for several occasions, including birthdays and special events. I planned a dinner for my birthday for about 10 of my close girl friends last week, and I have never been more embarrassed and angry about the service we received. The servers were wonderful, but the owner was downright nasty. When deciding what appetizers to order, I was consulting with our waiter on how big the portions were and what we wanted to order. The owner came over and began insistently telling me 2 orders of 5 different plates was not enough and that I "needed to order 4 orders of each of the 5 plates in order to have enough food." We went back and forth about this for about 5 minutes and I continuously reiterated I only wanted the 2 orders of each and told the waiter that was all I wanted as well. When our appetizers came we had way too much food on the table, but being a larger party we did not know exactly how much (we had a lot of leftovers though). At the end of the night, while paying the bill we noticed it looked much more expensive than it should have and that there were two inconspicuous $75 charges. When we asked the owner what the charges were for he immediately began a tirade and began yelling at us. He started asking if we didn't believe him, saying that he was stealing from us, told us "oh you rich girls can afford it", and a number of other unnecessary comments. As some of us were trying to calmly discuss the bill with him, he continued yelling at everyone. My daughter nicely asked for her jacket and when the waiter was bringing it over to her the owner grabbed it from him so that he could throw it at her and bark "see! I'm not stealing from you!" It was not until after we left the restaurant that we realized what the two unexplained $75 charges were -- the owner ignored my order of 2 orders of 5 appetizers and instead brought out 4 orders of the 5 appetizers -- and then charged us for them! If you are going to bring out extra orders of food than a party requests, you do NOT charge them for the extras! And you especially do not try to hide the charges and get mad when a party questions them! To make this experience worse, Trattoria used to write their specials on a very large chalkboard with the prices listed right there for customers to see. Now, the specials are written on a small chalkboard that isn't even visible from far away, with no prices listed, and the waiters push the most expensive plates. If this wasn't all enough, my friends had ordered a cake for me that was delivered to the restaurant before we arrived. When my friend arrived, she asked the owner if she could see the cake and he turned to her and said something to the effect of "if you think you're such a good cook, you can go in the kitchen and cook yourself!" No one, myself, my friends, my family, or strangers should be treated so disrespectfully while out paying to enjoy a nice, relaxing dinner! Never again will I be spending a dime at this restaurant! I have never done this before. But do not go to this restaurant the people working there are nice and that is where it ends. The food is way overpriced and nothing that special. A meatball appetizer had two meatballs, good sized, for $26.95, the artichoke appetizer special had one artichoke cut in half and grilled served with a dipping sauce, $24.95. I go to other restaurants that have food for these prices but with way better quality. The pastas average between 35 and $40 for a normal size and no particularly special ingredients. Plain pasta, Pomodoro, almost $30. The fish, meat and poultry main courses are much more expensive, $45-$60 and beyond for the "truffle" dishes. I have had much better Italian food at many local family owned places. Yet, the place was pretty full on a cold evening. I am not sure why these people are happy to pay these prices for a mediocre meal. If the food was outstanding and special, and the prices were high, then I would not have written this review. First time visiting this restaurant, recommended by a friend. Ok, let's get to the negatives. Upon entering it's painfully obvious it's a very small restaurant, with very very tight seating and an incredibly high noise level. The sound reverberates against the walls. I was offered a table by the door, hard to believe they actually put a table there, all the previous negative write ups are true, nobody wants to sit there, I don't want to sit there, so I got a table in the main part of the restaurant. For my girlfriend to get to her seat along the wall we had a slide to table over a little for her to fit through. Not a lot of room between the tables either, you feel like your having a group conversation with the people on your left and right. When the waiter was taking the order for the people on my left it was so tight, his hips were banging into my shoulder and I kind of looked at him several times thinking WTF? can you get off of me while you're taking their order. I actually had to nudge him off of me two or three times, I mean it's really tight. As in previous negative reviews, it did take a while for the waiter to come by, but they were friendly and courteous. Two large groups on my right and in back of me left, so the noise level went down considerably and I was able to hear the waiter when he brought over the specials on a board. All the specials were presented on the board, and here is my beef, NO PRICES LISTED or GIVEN. This is a BIG no-no for me, I'm ready to pay, but seriously why no prices? They all sounded very appealing and very appetizing. After the specials were presented, I had to ask for the regular menu, they seemed very, very reluctant to bring them out, the menus did have prices on them. OK it's not all bad, here's the good and there is plenty of it. Let's start with the bread, maybe the best I've had, absolutely fantastic, I believe ordered from the local bakery (maybe Balthazar's), crunchy, nice n soft on the inside. I believe it's an Italian Mountain bread. It was served with a little olive oil on the table, just a nice way to start. Like I said, we were presented the specials menu and they really emphasized it. They all sounded very appetizing and well thought out. I started out with that tuna tartare off the specials menu. It was ahi tuna on top of avocado, had a few other ingredients to spice it up. It was very good, very tasty, fresh, except not enough tuna, way way too much avocado, again very good, no big qualms here. My girlfriend had a arugula salad, fresh tasty again, very good. For a main course, I again ordered off of the specials menu. Remember no prices listed or given on the specials menu, (remember this point). I had a mushroom ravioli over cream sauce with black truffles. It was excellent, really good very tasty, a generous portion of black truffle on it, which is usually an issue. It was outstanding I really liked it. My girlfriend had rigatoni with sausage with the broccoli rabe. She asked for it al dente and she got it al dente! bravo! I saw my neighbors had the Branzino, it was a really nice size, and when presented looked really good, and the neighboring table confirmed that it was as good as it looked. I don't really think there is a bad dish on a menu. I think the food here is really really good. What you must come to terms with when eating at Carpaccio, is the noise level and a very small, shoulder to shoulder layout of the tables worth it, worth the price one pays? I got a little bit of sticker shock for a $58 dish of ravioli w/ black truffle, but to be fair there was a very generous portion of truffle on it and it was very tasty. My biggest comment is the NO PRICES ON THE SPECIALS MENU!!! which they seem to push, why hide it? be upfront, I just want to know what I'm paying for it, it will not alter my decision, if I want something I'm going to get it, but I want to know what I am paying. Nor can I understand why such reluctance to bring out the regular menus? Yes the prices are very high, but we're in North Jersey, so be prepared to pay, simple, you know it's coming. I found the owner Elvis and his wife to be attentive, charming, & would come out to greet patrons, I do like this. If they had a larger venue with some more room I can justify the prices, the food is very good I would definitely go back in spite of the negatives. The fact that it's a BYOB, & Carpaccio has proper wine glasses , a definite bonus!, I can bring my best wines instead of getting raped for them. I don't know if one can justify the very high prices here. A little more room, upfront pricing on the menus and I would've easily scored them four stars, easily. Upon entering a blond, middle-aged woman approached us. She asked our name and proceeded to seat us right in front of the door, being a chilly night we requested a table away from the entrance. Her response was less than hospitable, actually rude. Not the best way to start. We decided to give the food a try since we were already there. We were visiting relatives in Jersey who thought this place was good. We had reservations for 1st seating. Seats were terribly uncomfortable. We were immediately told about specials and placed our orders. It took 1 and a half hours for our dinners to come out! The OCD waitstaff continuously cleared bread crumbs from the table (very annoying). A few times he ended up dropping the crumbs in my wife's lap! The food was mediocre at best and grossly overpriced! This is one of the only reviews I've ever gone through the trouble to write. I realize it may be hard to find good restaurants in the area, but this experience was pretty bad from soup to nuts. I called to make a reservation, but it was booked solid. I asked if there was cancel list, but was told "what don't you get? we don't have a table." click. My mother happened to have been there the same day and asked for a reservation on our behalf, which was obliged. Okay so we're in. We arrive on time, the place is crazy packed, which is great. But once we were seated it took 15 minutes just to see a menu. Took another 45 minutes from ordering to get our apps, which were pretty good, then another hour to see the mains. The food was pretty good, but there were no prices on the menu, which was just a chalk board. Honestly, I didn't even really care to ask because I eat out in Manhattan and Brooklyn frequently, so it is what is. The prices were BONKERS. I legitimately thought it was an accident, but it wasn't. We got a SIDE of penne a la vodka because there weren't enough options for us on the menu, and THAT was $35. They charged $15 for one liter of still-water. Egregious! read more

I took my wife here prior to attending a nearby concert last night. Besides the place being incredibly small; we basically sat at a table for two basically in front of the door. When I asked owner if there was another seat, pointing out to him that it was cold by the door and that there was an open table for four, he said No, he needed that table just in case and told us we were lucky to even get a table. Wait staff srood in front of the door which was maybe 4 ft from us. Maybe, they were told to stand there to vloxk a draft? In any event, very uncomfortable with people standing right there. Worst than any of the above is being taken advantage of on the prices of tbeir mediocre food. I would give this place 20 stars if I could. The food was unbelievable, the best I've had in a long time. First I had the tuna tartare, which was super fresh and lightly flavored to perfection with lemon and fresh herbs + avocado. Then for my main course I had the scallops with pesto and homemade pasta it was to die for. We also had the veal chop with peppers which was unreal. These people complaining about the owner act like children, also the moron in one of the reviews below called him the "sexiest" not the word I think he was going for.
