It was a combination of Italian seasonings, garlic, and olive oil. I'd also like to acknowledge my food was served in a timely manner and the dedicated waiter works with a sense of urgency. The chicken parmesan entrée comes with vegetables and mashed potatoes. Pasta is only served upon request, but that was not mentioned on the menu. The red sauce was watery and cutlet was on the thicker side. I acknowledge the effort, but regretfully this CP was not my top choice. read more

Veal parmigiana was not good at all! Veal was very tough and and sauce on it was extremely over seasoned probably to cover up the lousy veal. Always a treat for us for decades, we consider John and Buongiornos as "ours" (along with lots of other folks. But what a night tonight. Beef carpaccio with Parmesan shavings and arrugula. My wife had a fave: string beans wrapped in prosciutto in a tasty vinaigrette. Mains: veal saltimbocca than made me smile; sole stuffed with crabmeat in shrimp sauce. My husband and I have been going to Buongiorno's since it opened in Dumont. Even after moving out of town we drive back as we know the quality of the food can't be surpassed. There are very few restaurants that I feel we get value for our money and Johnny's is our favorite! read more

Our Christmas Eve Rip-Off We viewed the Bongiorno memu on Yelp and decided to go there on Christmas Eve. We were told when we got there that they had a special Christmas Eve menu with limited options. There online menu had very reasonable prices; Pasta Dishes- $14.00 - $19.00 Chicken Dishes - $$19.95 Simple Salads - $10 to $12.00 each Extra The Christmas Eve menu had the same dishes for $28.00 each My wife ordered Spidini with a side of pasta I ordered Pork Chops with a side of pasta. All I got was one mediun sized pork chop. We ordered a simple salad to share (extra cost) We were charged extra for the small sides of pasta that had a simple tasteless tomato sauce. End of story is it cost us with a 20% tip $108.00 So I guess I will not be going back there on a Christmas Eve. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. I say experience, because that's what it what it was. A local dining experience where you aren't just going through the motions of a regular dinner. The owner/server greeted us and even struck up a lovely conversation. Even though we stayed for quite a long time and was the last table there past closing, he never rushed us out. The eggplant rollatini was good and the oysters were extremely fresh! My entree was a fantastically prepare sole stuffed with crabmeat. God if I could give this place less stars I would. The fact there are 4/5 star reviews tells you John must have a lot of friends. Arrived 6:54pm. One waiter 15 tables (waiter is maybe the owner maybe the cook maybe the manager??). 7:46 we finally got our water and bread. 8:06 we received our salad. 8:16 we received our apps 8:22 we asked for our entrees wrapped. It took every ounce of my patience to not absolutely lose my mind. I can believe what a show is being run. I am just floored. It shouldn't be open it just shouldn't. My crab cakes were so so so mediocre over breaded and generally close to grotesque. 2/10 on the cakes. The chicken picatta and veal saltimbuca can't be reviewed as they are in the backseat as I write this on my way home at 8:48. Oh and we paid full price. Simple fix you bafoon... hire help! Although there was only 3 tables taken, the owner/waiter/whatever-else sat us next to the table of 5 having a birthday party. The place was empty and yet everything took longer than expected. In the middle of our meal, the birthday table decided to carry on a conversation with someone on speaker phone for, at the very least, 5 minutes (which was fine with the owner because he said nothing.) An *assorted* cheese plate is not what they think it means. *Only* kalamata olives and sliced Parmesan is NOT an assortment. And the Fettuccine Alfredo was bland and mostly cream. It is a cute little place with a decent menu and I can vouch for the vegetarian meals the Pomodoro, Vodka and arrabbiata sauce is good. John is the best Italian chef around, he is also a great host. My family and I have been dining here over 15 years. Wonderful restaurant. Consistency good quality. In the fall you must try the duck. Came here with mi familia for Christmas dinner. We didn't make reservations, but the entire restaurant (save for 1 table) was empty and they STILL seated us in the corner table right by the door. Honestly, the restaurant did fill up eventually (though still not completely); I just felt it was a bit rude that they didn't oblige to our request to be seated elsewhere. Not only that, but our server had little patience for us it seemed and definitely did NOT treat us as well as he did the other tables. In fact, I'm sure that he sighed heavily at one point when we asked for a refill on water. (FYI, I liked our food runner way better than our waiter.) Here are my gripes: - Our rude and inattentive waiter - Food was nothing special. It tasted homemade, but for the same price, I'd rather go to a chain like Maggiano's. My parents seemed to like their food, but I didn't. I ordered "Shrimp Buongiorno" which was basically a $20+ dish for 5-6 pieces of mid-sized shrimp with some mozzarella melted on top. Asked for one of the specials; received the wrong one . . . and while it was ordered medium rare, it arrived calcified . . . . . . We started with the Crab cakes with an out of this world sauce you'd want to drink it. My friend had the Arugula salad with dried cranberrys, walnuts, and apples with a vinaigrette - sweet and tangy at the same time. He then had the Skirt steak special with mushrooms; tender and perfectly cooked medium rare with just enough gargonzola for a wonderful flavor combination. I had the Salmon with mozzarella and roasted peppers - delicious! We both were full from the generous portions so leftovers made a yummy lunch the next day. We have been here at least 4 times over the past two years. Always a good meal. Never had a hard time from any waitstaff. Sometimes difficult to keep track of all the specials as they are not written but recited by John (bit of an accent) and I'm a bit hard of hearing. We will be back again. BYOB read more

I went here with three other people, after finding a Restaurant.com coupon. The short story: the food was good, but the prices were high and the portions were low. We had calamari to start. It was very crispy, not tough or stringy, and the sauce was good- overall just how I like it. The restaurant also brought out complementary bread, which was very good and must have been straight from the oven. It came with a small serving of delicious olive oil and spices. I normally don't like olive oil with bread, but the spices made it great. I got one of the specials, lobster ravioli. The special menu (which has probably more than half the items you can order), doesn't list any prices. The regular menu has most items for about $16, and at most restaurants lobster ravioli costs about the same as other items. When we got our check, it turned out to be $24. My lobster ravioli was good, but not special. The portion size was fairly small. The portions of the other entree orders were also smaller than average, and the food was good but nothing special. There was no pasta on the side, even for the person in my party who ordered shrimp parmigiana. Pasta is an a la carte side order for everything. This is very unusual- I've never been in an Italian restaurant that didn't include free pasta with most entrees, and especially with a non-pasta tomato sauce dish like shrimp parmigiana. This is one more way this restaurant is uncompetitive on price. Service was okay. Nothing unusually bad or good. The atmosphere and decoration were nice, but it is dark with music playing, so it's probably more romantic than casual, and again, nothing special. We were the only customers for most of the time we were there- if you're looking for an empty quiet restaurant, that might be an advantage this place has. I hate giving a bad review to a place that isn't terrible. The food tasted good and I want them to succeed. But it's just not a good value relative to other nearby Italian restaurants. The prices were high, the portions were fairly small and didn't include pasta, and since most items are on the specials menu you likely won't know how much your order costs unless you ask. There was nothing unique or especially good about this place to make me want to return. Unless you're very nearby and don't want to travel any distance, I can't see a reason why anyone should come here. Absolutely horrible. Ordered take out for 3 meals. I was only provided 2 meals and charged almost $90! The owner claimed to not have heard the order and STILL charged for the other meal. And charged FULL price. When asked, John said what do you want me to do? 3 salads, 3 ice creams, and 2 pasta meals are almost $90? You've got to be kidding me. Even with the 3rd meal, it should not be that much. These aren't even your typical Italian meal size portions. It is an absolute disgrace. All the bad reviews about this place are totally legitimate. Poor customer service. One last thing, the prices you find online on all menus and door dash, are NOT what he charges. He charges way way more! He also uses the plastic bags from the liquor store across the street to pack the food, which leaked. read more

A friend and I decided to give this restaurant a shot because of the coupon off of restaurant.com. We ordered from the specials menu and I made the unfortunate assumption that the specials would be in line with what was on the regular menu. (I readily concede that the fault is totally ours for not checking the prcies on the specials) The regular menu prices are about $15-$18 on average which is pretty fair. The specials ended up being $25-$30 which was really pricey for the portions and quality we got. I ordered chicken stuffed with provolone, prosciutto, and spinach in a cream sauce and my friend ordered scallops over cappalini in a wine sauce. The scallops were obviously not fresh and he ended up not eating them and my chicken tasted very stale. We ordered the cannoli's for dessert without realizing they were $8 each which was a total ripoff as far as I'm concerned. Rockland Bakery's are far superior and they charge a fraction of that. Atmosphere-wise, the restaurant overall is very dark which I guess would be good for a date but it's definitely not good for friends or lunch. The waiter was a bit rude. There were only 3 other tables in the place and he often was nowhere to be seen when we needed refills and drinks. We went to pay the bill, and gave debit cards not realizing that the coupon said cash only. It was an honest mistake but he gave us an attitude and said "CASH ONLY! Can't you read??" In all fairness, he did apologize afterward but I still feel the insult was unnecessary. Waiters at higher class restaurants would politely inform us that it's cash only and not make a big deal about it. Between the poor food, high prices for specials, and poor service I couldn't recommend this restaurant. read more

Seems like only one person waiting on all the tables, maybe the owner or manager but he didnt seem genuinely nice, esp after he saw that we had a coupon. The service was incredibly slow. we got water after 15 mins of sitting down, our order was taken around the same time when we were ready much before. He had to go to the other tables to tell them the specials, give water and take orders as well so it was alot of waiting. we finally got bread and were able to order. The portions were incredibly small. the clams in white sc app had about 7 tiny clams for $8.95. The sauce was good though. the chicken special was a stuffed chicken breast, similar to the other chicken dishes on the regular menu for $15.95 butwhen we got the bill it was $24.95! maybe he jacked up the price since we had a coupon? no pasta side or anything. veal dish portion was tiny with 3 small morsels of veal next to a small scoop of mashed potatoes, no veggies or pasta. food was decent, not great, but not worth it due to the teeny portions and overpricing and painfully slow service by a not so genuinely friendly man. read more
