Visited for dinner after a local sushi spot had no seating. Italian again, wah. To our surprise Sofia Trattoria was not too crowded, and we were able to get a table. We immediately ordered some drinks, and our server was friendly and awesome. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with clothes hanging on clothing lines and the walls are painted like you are sitting outside; on the streets of Italy. Pretty fun. The restaurant itself is relatively large, with seating closer to the entrance and then you have the actual larger seating part of the restaurant. They also have outdoor seating, so yeah lots of seating options. Onto the food. Yum! I forget you don't have to eat pasta at an Italian restaurant. Given that I wasn't in the mood for carbs, to the entrees we went. I ordered the: - Chicken Piccata- yum! It's served with mash and broccolini. The capers, lemon butter and wine sauce made for the perfect bite. - Agnello al Pistachhio- rack of lamb with potatoes and broccolini Both dishes were excellent. *The only feedback I have: Some of the smaller tables are very close to much larger tables. For example our party of two was sitting in a corner quietly enjoying our dinner, about halfway into our dinner a table of 10+ diners with adults and children (under 8) got seated directly behind us. Leaving us with little to no room to move nor breathe and or talk to each other for that matter. I am sensitive to everything (jk) just loud noises and misbehaving children. A couple things for a stronger review and or a second visit from me: A better table from the hostess to begin with would have been great (the restaurant was not too crowded). A server telling the party with lots of children to remain seated. It's not a Corvette Diner or the Station, it's not a brewery with a patio for children to run around, so what's the vibe Sofia? Maybe simply put Trattoria da Sofia caters to large families with children. I have no idea, I don't live in the neighborhood. Is Trattoria da Sofia strictly for those within walking distance to the restaurant? I suppose it's in the name. That is a tough corner, many restaurants come and go from that exact corner. I wish them good luck, and I hope they figure it out. As of now I dont recommend a visit to the Italian Corvette Diner. All they are missing are the loud music and clowns walking around ready to inflate balloons for the kids. Good old Kensington.
@trattoria.da.sofia has such a cozy vibe, especially with their cool and charming interior! The food was served with an authentic Italian twist and, of course, everything was cooked to perfection.
We came here for a large party birthday celebration & our table was set up and ready upon arrival. I would recommend parking in the surrounding neighborhood. We had a nice section off to the side of the restaurant so it felt like a semi-private space. The ambiance here is lovely. I love the decor and felt like we were in a little corner of Italy. Our server (I wish I caught his name) was wonderful! He was very attentive and great at making suggestions on the menu. Service was fantastic, food came out quickly. The food blew me away. I had the spicy rigatoni with guanciale. The server did warn it was a bit spicy (he said a 3 out of 10 on the spiciness scale) and I would say it's closer to a 4 out of 10. Not painfully spicy but definitely has a kick! My husband had a fettuccini special with lobster & shrimp in a pink sauce. The pasta was homemade and tasted delicious. Overall, a 10/10 experience and I would recommend it to all!!
Great food and extremely filling! We ordered the fried burrata and I ordered the lamb ragu. There were large portion sizes and the food was cooked perfectly, the only reason why I made it down a star is because we were sat outside when the sun was setting and I was blinded for a good 30 minutes and distracted from the conversation. I had asked to be moved but they told us that we had already been assigned a server so we had to stay. It was a bit disappointing, but the food was good so I would just recommend sitting inside!
I know there are several reviews including the Spicy Rigatoni, but I still felt the need to do it as it was AMAZING! Truly the best Rigatoni Vodka dish I have had. The sauce was so cream and flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I added meatballs for a little added protein and that was the perfect addition. We definitely found our new favorite Italian spot! As for the service, I was to highlight a gentleman named Jose. From the moment we walked in he was so sweet and he was great with our toddler. He brought some bread out right away for her, was talking to her, playing hide and go seek and was so friendly when he brought her pasta out (which was also SO tasty!!). He also was so kind to us and helped us throughout the meal to make sure it was a great experience. Overall, it was a wonderful dining experience, the restaurant was clean, quiet, and well decorated. I truly enjoyed this restaurant and know we will be back very soon.
Ordered 2 Hugo sprits from the happy hour menu, a tartufosa pasta, the meatballs, and a pear bruschetta. Everything was really delicious but I think the pear bruschetta could use a little more flavor. It was a little bland. My favorite was definitely the tartufosa - even though it's a mushroom pasta, the mushroom flavor wasn't over powering. It was subtle but flavorful enough. The meatballs were some of the best I've had. Highly recommend the food here. Service was good but nothing over the top. They took great care of us.
Celebrated a birthday here last weekend and had an absolute fantastic experience. The vibes of the restaurant were right on point and the service was on par with everything. Our server was Ercules and he took care of us start to finish. The restaurant was full of energy and just what we were looking for. We had a round of drinks and everyone loved them all start to finish. I particularly loved The Sofia. Appetizers we had the tomatoes and burrata, the artichokes and truffle fries. All of them very good. With a large party it felt like we ordered almost every pasta dish. The portion sizes are big so feel free to bring your appetite. I had what I think was the star of the night. A delicious piece of seabass that was so perfectly cooked that I think about it at least once a week. I'll be back in SD soon and it will be round 2 at this place.
Came here for dinner finally, with its ideal location on Adams Ave in the heart of Kensington. Service was good on a not so busy day, with our needs met and the seating and serving of the food in an efficient manner. We had the polpette/meatballs, which was soft and covered with a tomato based sauce. Flavorful but I wouldn't say it's the best or cheapest that I've had. I also had the carbonara, which was a filling dish and they did not hold back on the meat, cheese, or pepper sprinkled on top. The meat was not the meatiest that I've had, and I would've preferred the pasta to be less soft and a bit more al dente. My friend had the bolognese which was a hearty and flavorful dish. Overall, not a bad experience, not my exact cup of tea but it was definitely worth the try!
We are on a continuous journey of trying the best Italian places in SD - especially if it's outside of Little Italy - and Trattoria Da Sofia was a good choice for date night. We had a reservation for a Friday night early dinner (around 5:30-6 PM) so we were able to find parking and be seated right away. We had a couple of cocktails, the Insalata Estiva for our salad, Spinacini with Guanciale, and Sugo Pittinicchi. The salad was SO good and flavorful that we had to remake it at home. The Spinacini was good but the Sugo Pittinicchi was alright and a bit too overwhelming for us - will definitely not order again in the future. Our meal also came with complimentary bread. Service was solid and there are both indoors and outdoors seating. The ambiance reminds me very much of being in Italy. Parking will be tough though as this is a busy area, so I would plan accordingly.
I've had this on my list for a while and finally got to make it out here for dinner! I was blown away by the experience! When you walk in, you're immersed into Italy itself. The decor is so cute and cozy. They have indoor seating and also outdoor patio seating. The food is really out of this world. The pasta is made fresh and you can taste the difference by the texture of the pasta. It was perfectly cooked al dente with a nice chewiness to it. All the dishes were perfectly seasoned. My favorite dish was the Ravioli Carne! That dish is so good! I would come back just for that. There's short rib in the ravioli and on top. It's so soft and it's got this butter cream sauce that pairs perfectly well with it. I also got the spicy rigatoni and added chicken to it. The sauce is so good and has a suttle little kick to it. I wanted more of that sauce lol The Alfredo was nice and light. It wasn't too rich or creamy which is how I like it. The Caesar was really good too. It's not too fishy or overpowering. It had more of a light creaminess to it. If you like Italian, you have to try this place. It'll keep you coming back!
Nice ambiance but it was pretty crowded/loud and hot (even at night)! The pasta was yummy but a tad chewy and the complimentary bread with marinara (unfortunately you have to pay for a second serving) was great!
Classy yet comfortable. That experience starts before you even get inside thanks to the warm glow of the block it's nestled in. The food was so good I'll definitely be coming back here again. Would probably be a good date spot if you do that sort of thing.
We had such a great experience! Yuri, our server, was amazing and so friendly, attentive, and incredibly detailed. He really made sure we were taken care of throughout our meal. The food was delicious, the wine was great, and the whole place was such a vibe. Definitely worth the wait! If you go, ask for Yuri, he was the best! We'll definitely be back.

A foodie friend invited me to Trattoria Da Sofia for dinner. Looks like they opened in March 2024 in the Kensington area of San Diego focused on comforting Italian dishes paired with warm Italian hospitality. We headed out on a Thursday evening to try out their menu. Between the 2 of us, we tried the following: - Aracine (Appetizer) - fried rice ball, saffron, meat sauce, green peas - Sugo Pittinicchi (Pasta) - tagliatelle pasta with pork rib & sausage slowly cooked in pomodoro sauce - Osso Buco (Veal Shank) - veal shank braised with vegetables, red wine, and broth served with saffron risotto - Cocktail - Temple of Mars (Mezcal) - Cocktail - Lemontini (Housemade Limoncello) Our waiter also recommended a dessert that was off menu since they ran out of the actual dessert we wanted. This venue formerly housed Cucina Sorella, and before that, the Kensignton Bar and Grill. I remember I was dining at the Kensignton Bar and Grill on the evening that HRH Princess Diana passed away in the Avenue Iena Tunnel in Paris. It was ironic that Her Royal Highness lived in Kensignton Palace in London and here I was with my family in Kensignton, San Diego! The new tenant of the Space, Trattoria da Sofia, seems to be doing things right. First, let's talk about the exquisite welcome offered by Sara. From her initial smile to being escorted to my table, it was all the perfect professionism that we always seek yet rarely find. The same superlitives can be said for the refined table service offerred by Modestino of Napoli. The wine never went dry and the meal proceeded in exactly the pace I requested. The food here was good, however the bad service knocked my overall rating down and overshadowed the entire experience for me. We got the calamari and the eggplant appetizers which were both good. For the pasta, we got the spinach ravioli which was my favorite and the pistachio spaghetti. I was expecting the pistachio flavor to be more subtle but it really was the star of the dish so if you like pistachio this is definitely the pasta dish for you. As for the service, when we walked in as a party of 3 people on a weekday, the host misunderstood and thought we were 6 people. He then immediately had an attitude and was rude to us about walking in without a reservation, which is when I corrected him and then he promptly seated us. Next, our waiter was extremely short with us and acted like we were inconveniencing him by being there and having to place an order for the food. We went during restaurant week and had a great experience! Our server, Hercules, was accommodating and very friendly. The ambiance was inviting and casual. We ordered meatballs and stuffed eggplant for appetizers, ravioli di carne and tartufosa for mains, and limoncello and tiramisu for dessert. Since the tiramisu wasn't on the restaurant week menu, I asked if I could have it instead of the other options and Hercules said it was no problem! This is by far the best pasta we've had in SD, and we've been here our entire lives so we've tried dozens of restaurants. I went there for my birthday dinner with some of my girlfriends yesterday. Vibes were amazing like they literally brought Italy to San Diego! Cute interior designs that give you "Italy" vibes all the time. Their services were all AMAZING. Our waiters were so nice & on it all the time!! The food was also so delicious!! My friends and I all got the Spicy Rigatoni Vodka pasta with different types of protein in it (I got chicken, one of my other friends got it with meatballs, and the other got it with some cheese) so definitely feel free to adjust your orders. I would definitely come back. And you MUST MUST get the tiramisu for dessert. They have a regular tiramisu or one with pistachio as an option. kk bye !! read more

What a cute little spot in Kensington! Made same day reservations for a friend and I. We arrived early and were sat right away. The interior had a beautiful fountain and cute decor. The service was wonderful and the bread bites with marinara were incredible. We ordered the grilled artichoke hearts--A MUST! The char from the fire was a nice touch. We also ordered the salmon and the spinach ravioli--again, to die for! The ravioli were great size and they gave us about 5 pieces. The pesto sauce was delicious. The salmon was PERFECT. We also enjoyed the house mocktail too!! Ask about it! Dessert was a lemon cake she's cannolis!!! I think the lemon cake won out but the cannolis were also amazing Servers were friendly, helpful, and working hard!!! I'll def go back again!!! read more

Ate here twice now and the second time around was just as disappointing. First time around I got the gnocchi and it was just eh. Not too impressed with the texture or flavor. The sauce tasted more like ragu from the jar. The vodka pasta was really dry and not very saucy. Calamari I'd say was really good and loved that. I'd get this again. The seafood ravioli tasted very fishy. The pistachio pasta was fairly decent. Second time around: Caesar salad was pretty good I got the caprese salad just because I didn't want the pasta this time and it was just a big ball of mozzarella served over three slices tomato with very little balsamic sauce. Not that great. Some basil there as well but mainly just a big chunk of mozzarella. The wine was way over priced. Charged $33 a bottle for one that you can get for $8.99 at Ralph's. 3.5 stars Came early on a weekend evening to beat the crowd and parking. I got the Sugo Pittinicchi and shared the Spiedini Siciliani. The Sugo Pittinicchi came with tagliatelle pasta and pork ribs and sausage braised in a pomodoro sauce. The sausage and ribs were very tender and delicious. The pomodoro sauce I thought was too simple for me. The noodles were not soggy but not what I consider al dente, I wish they were a little more firm. The Spiedini Sicilani was a beef roll stuffed with mozzarella, bread crumbs, and pine nuts and served with rosemary potatoes. The beef was grilled and had a nice char on the outside, I did wish there were some kind of sauce on top or something to dip the meat in. The potatoes were nicely cooked and had a good texture and flavor. A good take on meat and potatoes. I think I'd try the ossobuco next time as I like braised dishes. The meal came with focaccia bread and pomodoro sauce. They were fine but I wish they were both served warm. Service was friendly and attentive. The interior is made to look like you're sitting outside in the street in Italy between buildings, as there is laundry being hung above along clothes lines. Parking is all on the street which is why I came early so I'd have an easier time finding parking. read more
The Kensington neighborhood has this new Italian restaurant after its Michelin Bib Gourmand predecessor closed last summer. Trattoria da Sofia debuted a couple of weeks ago in the vacated space. The interior was neatly decorated, including a Roman statue fountain near the foyer, while an outside front patio nearly doubled the seating capacity. We made an OpenTable reservation and sat at a two-top table in the main dining area. The two-page menu featured antipasti, soups, and salads on the left side while the right side listed the pastas, entrees, and sides. A complimentary basket of focaccia bread with pomodoro sauce was provided while we decided what to order. From the entrees, we split the Spiedini Siciliana as a starter. This dish was made up of stuffed beef rolled with mozzarella cheese, bread crumbs, pomodoro sauce, and pine nuts served with rosemary roasted potatoes. It turned out to be better than the individual pasta that I ordered because the meat was well-seasoned and grilled perfectly. My friend chose the Sugo Pittinicchi which was tagliatelle noodles with pork ribs and sausage slowly cooked in pomodoro sauce. I selected the Allo Scoglio which consisted of fettuccine noodles with clams, mussels, shrimp, and calamari finished in pomodoro sauce. This was the kitchen's version of Seafood Fra Diavolo as the sauce had a considerable degree of spiciness. Because of the seafood ingredients, it was the priciest of the pasta dishes on the menu. One aspect of our dinner that bothered me was the seating configuration. When we first sat down, the surrounding tables were empty. By the time we received our food, the hostess seated other groups next to us which made the area congested. Our table was already small, and I was worried that anyone who walked by would potentially bump it and knock over some plates. There were plenty of open spots across the dining room so the staff could have easily spread out the parties. For the food quality, service, and prices, I gave a 3.5 star rating for our Trattoria da Sofia experience. read more
My boyfriend and I have been wanting to try this Italian restaurant after seeing them on social media! I love the tiramisu from cesarina and it seems like they did something similar, so we had to try it! I got the spicy rigatoni vodka pasta and I loved it! I added burrata for $8 extra and it was good! I don't think it was worth the $8 though. The pasta was creamy and delicious, not spicy though. My boyfriend got the sugo something and he enjoyed it! I thought it was ok, but he liked all the protein in it. We also got the garlic bread which I really enjoyed with the three sauces they provided. The truffle fries were plentiful too! went for friend's birthday - was super nice! was looking for somewhere affordablish but also on fancier side since it was a special day! price was around $34/person (including tip) and we ordered those 4 pasta dishes. staff super nice, nice ambiance. good mix of ppl dressed fancy but more ppl were dressed causal or semi-fancy. pasta ranking: 1. Tartufosa: 8/10 ; if you like truffle you will like this. love the mushrooms, pretty strong truffle flavor (nice mix given the rest of the sauces pretty similar). decent size 2. Spicy rigatoni vodka: 8/10 ; there's a reason why this is the most pooular. very tasty, softer texture of noodles 3. ravioli de pesce: 7.5/10 ; I really liked the taste of this, I have a big appetite so this wouldn't fill me. price per pasta ratio not justified for me 4. salmon pasta : 7/10 ; was good for first couple bites but is pretty heavy. got tired of it near the end especially since so many carbs read more

On a Christmas last minute dinner with friends we choose this little Italian restaurant hidden in Adams avenue. Excited about the braised short ribs we were all disappointed that they were sold out. We all decided on the holiday prefixed menu which included appetizers, entree and a dessert. I choose the imported from Italy buffalo mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil. The mozzarella was delicious its texture is richer with slight bold tangy flavor that balances with the acidic tomatoes. Next, I decided on the seadfood ravioli in a cream sauce. After coming back from Italy I began appreciating pistachios again. Curious on the dish I dove in and it was delicious. The textures made a difference when eating it all. Last, they were also out of all the desserts and came out with a cannoli. Service by Francesco was attentive even though throughout our dinning experience the tables were constantly full bustling with holiday cheer. Subtle reminders of the decor bring you to the streets and life in Italy. Thanks for a great dinner looking forward to the short ribs next time. read more

We went the second time and I had the salmon. It's perfectly fried..I like how the edges are crispy. However I find the salmon and the risotto salty. I like salty snacks and dishes but this one was a bit much for me. Pink vodka pasta was just alright. read more
Today was Trattoria da Sofia's opening day. They have taken Cucina Sorella'' spot in Kensington on Adams Ave. The trattoria offers simple flavorful regional Italian and Sicilian cuisine. For example, I tried the Sicilian favorite street food, the arancini with a meat sauce and fresh peas, Zucca in agro dulce or roasted squash in a sweet and sour sauce, alla palina: a vegetarian bucatini pasta dish with cauliflower, raisin, tomato paste, and pine nuts, and the ravioli di pesce stuffed with crab and shrimp and topped with smoked salmon. The arancine was very good and one of my favorite items. They gently crispy and handsomely filled with a delicious meat sauce similar to a bolognese. These are a Sicilian favorite and were delicious. The roasted squash was good on the second try. After making a comment regarding their cooking temp and flavor, one of the owners "Mario" took control and re-fired them in the kitchen and made some terrific roasted squash. This personal involvement by one of the owners bodes well for the new eatery. The crab and shrimp raviolis were fantastic. I loved the filling and loved the smoked salmon with the white wine cream sauce on top. This dish is a winner. The bucatini was good, but I couldn't help that it was missing something: like perhaps some sort of sauce that elevated the ingredients and bucatini pasta. Service was very welcoming and super friendly. It's clear that they want to be a great neighborhood eatery for the years to come. They have a great comfortable interior, which part of it is decorated as an outdoor Sicilian patio. They offer outdoor seating as well. read more

Me and my boyfriend have slowly become regulars at this amazing restaurant. Over the last few years we've dined at numerous restaurants and this one has ; by far the most delicious and authentic Italian food we have ever tasted. Specifically the house made pasta! I can't have boxed pasta anymore after having their food. The service is always top notch; you absolutely have to try this restaurant. You have to experience Trattoria Da Sofia! The moment you walk in, it feels like family. The place is busy, i recommended making a reservation although we still had to wait 25 min after our reservation time to be seated. While we waited for our table we sat at the bar. The bartender was attentive and even shared with us about wines! We had a chance to review the menu while we waited and were ready to order. For our appetizers we had the meatballs and stuffed eggplant. They were so good! For our main course we each selected a pasta dish, the carbonara, the bolognes and the pistacchiosa. If I had to pick in order of my favorite, I would say Carbonara, Bolognes and Pistacchiosa. Of course we also had the Tiramisu to end the night. The atmosphere is busy, never a slow moment. Love this place, attached a picture of my delicious 8oz filet with mashed potatoes and spinach. But i also started with the grilled artichoke appetizer which is out of this world. Sitting outside looking at beautiful Kensington, very comfortable under the heating elements. If you haven't been, come love this place. Compliments to the Chef!! Ordered the Tiramasu so had to add this. Also delicious. Assembled at the table by our server. Plenty for 4 people to share in my opinion. Excellent choice to finish the meal. read more

Our server Hercules was amazing and gave us really good suggestions for what we should get. The salmon was unbelievable as well as the chicken piccata and the spicy rigatoni. Honestly, anything you get on this menu is good and it's a really nice atmosphere with a really nice servers very authentic. read more

Such a great meal! Was able to make last min reservations on a Friday which was great. The place is very cute inside, laundry is hanging on wire just like if you were in Italy. The workers were extremely nice. We ordered the bruschettone app, a must try!!! The burrata was so fresh and the figs and balsamic were the perfect touch. We split the Spinicini ravioli, spinach and ricotta with a pesto cream sauce-delicious!! Not too filling, very light, the pesto tasted so fresh. They have other great menu options that looked delicious as well, will have to try next time. One suggestion I have is the lights could've been dimmed a little bit, it was pretty bright inside. This is closest I've had to my great grandfathers home cooking. The restaurant is gorgeous and feels like a small community type vibe. Our service was excellent and was topped off by the table side tiramisu presentation that was simply delicious. Sofia's is going on our top 5 must revisit and take friends to! Well well, what a delightful new spot in Kensington! We were able to get a reservation in the morning on a Friday. We arrived and noticed the overall design & decorations bringing you back to nana's house. We got sat in front of the fountain by the entrance, we didn't mind this. We had service quite quickly and ordered a red, the waitress recommended. Lemony artichokes Spicy Vodka Pasta 11/10 Sea bass 11/10 GET THE TABLE-SIDE TIRAMISU!! Holy cow, this blew our face and we wish we had this first! Mario was a nice treat, couldn't tell if he was the manager but he checked in, made sure we loved our food, kept our water filled, and treated us to Lemoncello! It felt friendly and familiar, that's a nice touch to a restaurant. We continued to get new silverware and plates when we changed dishes which we appreciated, we started with one entree and then chose a second. We shared every meal and I believe that really allowed us to enjoy each dish & rate it as we did. Good portions too for two! Some things that I would share as sort of "ugh" The bathrooms were through a cute tunnel but they only had one and a bit of a wait. we were sat by the front entrance and anytime someone left , the door would stay propped open and the cold air would hit us (rough after delaying & being warm). Everything was so delicious! My drink was the Amore (sweet alcohol tasting - almost tasted like there was no alcohol!) and I tried the pistacciosa - which i was hesitant of because I love carbonara... but I was pleasantly surprised! Not too nutty and gives that pasta type of flavor without it being too much! I would definitely get it again! Staff was so attentive and we got to sit next to the fountain, which was so cute inside! Would definitely come back again for the delicious molten lava cake too! read more

Yes, I believe they do. It was mentioned to us when we were there for dinner. They are not open for lunch because they are making the pasta.
