Hard to find as the signage is above a small doorway which leads you up a flight is stairs but once inside it is an unexpected delight. It looks like you were in somebody's dining room. Lots of light cute and clean. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable and the food came out very quick. Everybody loved their meals. Easy to make a reservation through Yelp. In a great location in Little Italy so afterwards you can easily walk to grab a gelato or just take in the sights and sounds

Luka is a top notch pro! My son and I had a great conversation about Italy, Brazilian jiujitsu and Italian food. Great guy! Food: everything is freshly made and tastes very good. We enjoyed our pasta dish and my son enjoyed his chicken Parmesan. The food came out fast as well. One thing I really like was the fact that the window could open and we got the cool breeze from the sunny San Diego weather coming through on the second floor. Which also provided a great view of the city of Little Italy while we were eating. Great food, great customer service, and great location! Definitely recommend stopping by and checking this local place out. Ask for Luka.

Came here for a dinner with coworkers and loved the intimate atmosphere. It was a bit stuffy although the windows were open and there was a fan. We sat in the middle of the restaurant but I think if we were by a window then we would have gotten fresher air. It is upstairs but no elevator that we saw so that is something to think about if wanting to eat here. For appetizers we tried the tower of appetizers which consisted of a selection of cured meats & cheeses, nuts, jam, olivea, bruschetta & caprese served on a wooden tower, meatballs and marinara sauce. For my entree I ordered the lobster ravioli. I would have tried some wine but I had a tummy ache but the wine smelled delicious and I know it would have went perfect with our dishes. Our waitress was attentive and kind. The staff felt very family like. I would definitely come back when I'm in the area!

Everything goes above and beyond. You cannot go wrong with any meal that you get here. The seafood is made fresh and the shrimps were so good. The calamari was also light, crunchy and a wonderful appetizer overall. From the start to finish our whole family of five was raving over how good everything is! Service was kind and immediate. Everyone seeks to provide high quality service and food. We felt nourished not only physically but holistically. The restaurant is located at the second floor. The whole atmosphere reminds me of home. This is what a restaurant must be. We can see why Barack Obama has also visited this place.

Entrance to the restaurant, which is upstairs.

Ristorante Illando is perfect for those evenings when you want a solid meal in a cozy setting. We came here to celebrate my son's birthday, and it did not disappoint! We got a spot in the back room, which gave our party a bit of privacy from the main dining room. Service was on point in that we got what we needed when we needed it, but we still had privacy. We had two different servers. The first one was a woman who was very direct but not in any rude, as I surmise the directness is due to being a non-native English speaker and she was trying to get her message across clearly in any way she can. The second server was delightful and likely the Luca that is raved about in the other reviews. Food was a hit with everyone in our party. Dishes ordered were the lamb chops, the salmon, the chicken Marsala, and the lobster ravioli. Kids has a plain pasta and a couple of slices of pizza. Overall, everything was solid and we would be happy to return if we're in the area again.

Got a weird vibe when we walked up on a not so busy Tuesday evening. Sort of like, is there a table for us or not, two people said they had to check. It was almost like they weren't sure they wanted our business. Our at least that's the feeling we got. We did get seated upstairs. We ordered arancini as a starter. They were stuffed with a red sauce and cheese. But they were served on a bed of vodka sauce. We all liked them. I ordered the Rigatoni All' Amatriciana. It was okay, very acidic though. Another one of our party had the chicken parmigiana, they liked it. Then the other two had Fettuccine Gamberi e Pancetta. They said it was just okay also. The bread with oil was very fresh. The table runner that brought and cleared our plates and filled our drinks was extremely nice and seemed to work hard.

Amazing food with a quiet, intimate dinner setting. The carbonara was definitely a highlight dish, it was the best I've had in a while. Service was quick and attentive. My new go-to Italian restaurant.

Cute hole in the wall Italian restaurant with delicious plates for the perfect price. Take the stairs up, seating up top Great for small and large groups

Enjoying the upstairs window view. You can also sit on the sidewalk tables.

This is a charming Italian restaurant set above the pizza place in the same building. I almost missed it walking by! You walk upstairs to the right and it's a refreshing environment with muted tones and soft pink roses on each table. It wasn't very busy at lunchtime which worked great for us! They have a variety of pasta, but the gluten free pasta shape is penne and they are willing to do any sauce on it. I had the creamy vodka sauce with Italian bacon chunks and shrimp. It was tomato based, vodka sauce and was delicious! It was on the higher side for lunch pricing, the gf pasta is an added $5. When in little Italy....

This was such a good place to celebrate my friend's birthday! We had shared a couple of things but our two favorite items were the gnocchi pesto and the tiramisu. The gnocchi was the perfect texture, pillowy and light. The pesto was fresh and smooth, it was so easy to eat that you couldn't help but eat more. The tiramisu was light and full of flavor. The slice was on the bigger size for one portion but we just split since we were pretty full. The staff was very nice and even had a candle on the tiramisu for my friend. The restaurant is quite small so I would definitely make a reservation especially if you're a larger group

Spaghetti Carbonara
Brian R.

Great, fresh, and authentic. Both the spaghetti and meatballs and the carbonara were obviously freshly made, from the pasta to the sauces, to the meatballs and guanciale. This is the spot if you want authentic Italian food.

So delicious and the service was fantastic! Glad we found this place! I ordered rhe fettecene and also tried the chicken parm. O was a fan of both! The flavor was so good! I also ordered an Amaro spritz that was very tasty! I would definitely return and would highly recommend this gem to others if youre looking for a solid italian restaurant!

Brussels Brussel Sprouts W/ Pancetta (Online) Rigatoni alla Amatriciana (Online)
Michelle L.

Came with no reservation and was able to get seated immediately (outside only) which was nice. Service was generally ok. The food was nothing to write home about. The bread had a stretchy texture instead of fluffy and warm. It wasn't particularly tasty. The Brussels sprouts we had were cooked well but could've done with a bit more balsamic. The pasta we got was dry, overcooked, and had lacked flavor and seasoning. The best thing about this restaurant was that the service was good and the food came out quickly. Overall though, I would not come back without improvements to the cooking.

Is there seating downstairs? Or an elevator to go upstairs?

The downstairs seating is only outside on the sidewalk. Downstairs is where the kitchen and pizza shop are. To have indoor seating you need to walk up the stairs. I did not see anywhere an elevator would be, and I'm quite sure it's only stair access.

Yes we are open for lunch stating at 12pm but there is no special menu. It is our regular menu.

The service is always prompt and the feel of the restaurant feels modern yet casual enough where it's not stuffy, perfect for just hanging out with friends or family. In this round, I got to try their special, Spaghetti Alla Gricia which features a Pecorino and black pepper cream sauce with Guanciale (pork cheeks). We got these items (I went a while ago so the prices might not be as accurate if I listed): 1. FIORI DI ZUCCA RIPIENI- this was a fried zucchini blossom and honestly my favorite item that we had gotten here. It is lightly battered and has a nice cheese filling. The tomato aioli was my favorite part and I could honestly dip bread in it all the time. I would come back here just for these. 2. INSALATA CESARE - This caesar salad was pretty good and had a huge parmesan crisp. The salad was fresh and paired well with our pastas. 3. Cheesewheel pasta - I thought this was a pretty interesting concept and the cheesewheel pasta was rich but very delicious. 4. TAGLIATELLE AL NERO DI SEPPIA - The concept of a squid ink pasta is pretty cool. This wasn't bad but just not my favorite. Overall it was a really fun experience and the food was pretty good. It is a bit pricey and parking can be a bit hard in downtown. The staff here was friendly and quick with our order. The restaurant inside is quite nice and has a nice view of Little Italy.

We asked if there were any tables available inside and were told no because they were being saved for other guests, even though there were empty tables for two. It was a bit chilly and windy outside, and we weren't the only ones asking to sit inside. I even watched one of the indoor tables get up and leave shortly after, which made the whole situation even more frustrating. That already left a bad impression, but we decided to stay and give the food a chance. Stinco Di Agnello: 4.5/10 The portion size was great and the dish looked delicious when it came out, but that was about the only positive. The lamb shank was overcooked, a little dry, and lacked the rich flavor you'd expect. Even the sauce couldn't save it. The pasta had a grainy texture, and the mushroom sauce was so weak that you could barely taste it. On top of that, the plate was too small, so the lamb sauce kept mixing into the mushroom sauce and completely threw off the dish. Saltimbocca Alla Romana: 3/10 This was honestly unacceptable. We specifically ordered the steak medium rare, and it came out well done. That's not a small mistake. It's one of the most basic things to get right. We didn't send it back because we didn't want to sit there waiting for another entree or waste the food, but it was tough, dry, and not enjoyable to eat at all. The sauce was bland and added nothing to the dish. The potatoes were the only thing worth eating. They also only serve wine and beer, so don't expect cocktails. The only reason this review isn't even lower is because our server was kind, attentive, and did a great job. I've given this restaurant multiple chances over the years, and every visit has been disappointing in one way or another. The ambiance wasn't great either. Between being seated outside in the cold, the noise, and the overall atmosphere, it definitely didn't feel like a place I'd choose for a date night. At this point, I can't justify coming back. There are far too many great Italian restaurants around to spend your money on food that is consistently underwhelming and poorly executed. Food: 3/10 Service: 8.5/10

So nice views into the park too. Josh was our server and he was super nice! I started with the pope's delight cocktail. It's listed online as "aged rum + amaro romana + salted cantaloupe olio + lime, $17." But they had decided to add a proscuitto crisp and make it $21. I didn't want the proscuitto so that was a little annoying. But it was a tasty little cocktail. Bread: it's amazing here. They change exactly how they do it from time to time - this version was so yummy and with great butter. App: I got the burrata + pluot | cherry tomato + arugula + almond + coriander + mint + toast appetizer. Very yummy! Huge also. I took half of it home. Definitely recommend. Entree: I always like when the corn agnolotti comes on the menu, but it changes each year. This version was pretty good - I think my pasta was just a tad undercooked, not quite al dente on the parts of the agnolotti on the edges (not the pillows holding the filling). Still good though. Also, if you're going to the theater, do you know they have a FREE shuttle that takes you to the Old Globe and back? We decided to walk there after dinner (easy, pretty) but take the shuttle back after the show. So easy! And then I ordered takeout dessert from Josh. Overall, a super meal and great vibes. We scouted the menu online and planned to order the yellowtail ceviche, calamari, tacos calabrese, casareccia tartufata, ravioli de carne, and pesto e gamberi. However, the menu we received in person was slightly different from the one we saw online. The yellowtail, pesto, and tacos were all gone, so we replaced them with a carpaccio and a ragu pasta. After placing our order, we got some bagged bread and oil. The bread was really good - it had a crunchy crust but was super fluffy. It took about ten minutes for our appetizers (calamari and carpaccio) to come. The calamari was lightly battered and extremely tender. The carpaccio is interesting and had a good flavor. Both of these were good. The carpaccio portion is pretty small but the calamari portion was pretty large. After another 25 minutes, our mains came. The ravioli is good, especially the meat filling. The ragu is good too, the pasta has a very good texture, the meat was soft, and the tomato flavor was strong. The ragu felt pretty light. The casareccia tartufata has a very strong truffle scent. It was creamy and truffle. Out of the three pastas I tried, this was my favorite. Despite having a thin looking sauce, this was the heaviest pasta too. Overall this was a pretty good dining experience.
