Our dog Jasper declined rapidly with cancer, and we had to take the tough decision to put him to sleep to limit his suffering. Both of the doctors, and all of the staff at Travis Country Vet were very patient and kind and compassionate, at a very emotional time for us. It was all handled very well. I would say that, like the vast majority of vets, they are allopathic doctors, and don't promote holistic means as much as I think is warranted. E.g., a few years back Jasper was lame and they gave us our options for surgery. I must say they were very even handed, noting the pros and cons. Instead I gave Jasper the Chondroitin Sulfate I was taking and in 3 months he was back to his normal self, running around. :-) So always do your own research for holistic alternatives to surgery, or drugs. Have been taking my paraplegic pup, Archie, here for two years and change now. From talking with other close dog parent friends who have also taken their dogs here, firstly let me just say that a lot of us feel they overcharge by quite a bit (just ask them for a quote for a simple dog teeth cleaning, for example, and you'll fully understand where we're coming from). Most importantly, they have proven to be incompetent for the most menial of tasks that i've only trusted them with, and i've heard horror stories from others' experiences here. but, what happened with Archie & I - i needed a basic fecal test with results done as a prerequisite for a specialized appointment with the most specialized veterinarian for paraplegic dogs in the U.S., so i toted my dog and i all the way to Florida from Austin, driving in my car for the first time in order for my Archie to be seen and advised by this doctor and his amazing team, an incredible opportunity for my paralyzed dog to walk again in his life. So, we're in Florida, and it's the day before Archie's appointment with this specialized doctor, and I have to call up (bc they hadn't contacted me yet after the time frame they said they would) Travis Country Vet Hospital to confirm Archie's fecal test results were not only fine, but also sent over to this specialized vet. They put me on hold, return & tell me they actually lost Archie's fecal sample for the test....so we were screwed. Long story short, i now only trust TCVH with the most bare bones amount of responsibility, since they're so damn close to where we live it's just too convenient for my busy lifestyle. So, i now only rely on & give them my money for Archie's monthly Simparica Trio, & weighing him for the proper dosage of said medication. For literally everything else, because i don't trust TCVH with my Archie's precious life, i take us all the way to Sunset Canyon Vet Clinic in Dripping Springs (which i obvi highly recommend!) instead of going to these guys, who are essentially right down the road from us....the staff are sweet and helpful, but i can't trust them overall after my personal experience, especially considering it wasn't/has never even minimally been acknowledged (so obviously then, nor apologized for, nor furthermore & most importantly, addressed it re: adjusting their future practice from learning from this mistake) by anyone at TCVH at his following appointments since it happened. read more

Update: Erin, the clinic's manager, mailed our pet records, accused us of being disrespectful and told us to go elsewhere. More shaming in response to criticism. We are the advocates for our pets. Our family is the most important thing in the world to us. We don't apologize for speaking up. When a relationship breaks, hindsight reveals multiple issues that built up to the break. That was the case with this clinic. We had repeated issues with parking, wait times, prescription refills, etc. The unexpected death of one of our dogs in May set us on edge. The situation with the incorrect hydrocodone prescription in September was the last straw. We came to this clinic through the Travis Country neighborhood where we have served on the HOA. We continued out of convenience. It wasn't the right decision. When a door closes, others open. We are going to seek a locally owned vet this time. And vet care options have exploded: social media reviews, telemedicine, mobile visits, online pharmacies, grocery store pharmacies, discount cards, pet insurance, online guidance, etc. It was a Google article that finally diagnosed our dog's chronic diarrhea as an acquired food allergy. This has to be the best vet clinic I've been to. Let me preface this by saying - I have an 18 year old dog who looks like an Ethiopian in dire need of a sandwich. Her legs don't work right, she moves a lot slower and she sleeps a bit more... but that's what happens when we get older. I've been taking my pets here for years. They know my pets when they come in and they know their history (yes from reading their charts...) but also because they have been going there for so long. Several months ago I came in with my poor old Vida dog to ask if it was time to put her down because of all the things previously mentioned. They asked me, is she using the bathroom, is she walking around, is her tail wagging? Yes yes yes. It was then that this answer told us both that she still has a good quality of life. She's old but her tail still wags. They didn't make me feel bad about not putting her down at her age and although she looks starved - they could tell that she's fed, loved and still happy. This hospital is the best. They've loved all my animals and offered incredible deals to help make the visit affordable for those of us on a budget. I wish anyone who struggles to care for their pets and needs an affordable, incredible team should go here. Really. If they treated people I'd be their first patient. I've been bringing my cats here for 10 years. Prior to 2022 I would have given them 5 stars but I'm not so pleased anymore. The ownership changed and the vet tech/office staff are all new. 1 vet remains and new ones have been in/out for what seems like a short time. The icing on the cake for me was my taking my cat in for her exam/vaccines and I never saw or spoke to the vet. It was all done "in the back". I got a receipt but no blood work results. I called back the next day insisting on talking to the vet about her thoughts, concerns & bloodwork. She did take the time to see me and provided written test results but I was pi*ed off that I had to make an effort just to know what was going on with my cat. She needs a procedure but I am taking her to a new vet. read more

Although the second appointment was scheduled far out due to availability, the office kept me on a call list and thankfully we were able to be seen sooner. I started taking my cats here when I moved to South Austin. The staff is very friendly and have great bedside manner. Unfortunately I had to put down one of my cats after he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer and his quality of life was jeopardized. It's such a hard thing to go through but the staff and the vet were so nice and empathetic during the entire process. I have since adopted another cat from Austin Humane and both of my cats have been to see them, even during 2020. They are curbside only right now and I think a testament to their professionalism is that my newly adopted cat had to go to her first vet visit without me since they come to your car and take the animals inside for their exam. Both cats came back without trauma and the process was fairly easy. Call when you get there, they come retrieve the animals (in their carrier), the admin calls you to pay via credit card over the phone as they return your animal safe and sound to your car with a receipt. I got the wonderful annual pleasure of taking both of my dogs in for their shots just on Monday so everyone knows how beautiful of a penny that is... well fast forward to Wednesday I let my dogs out to the backyard, we share fence with our backyard neighbors, and the dogs have never met yet so they always kind of like charge at the fench which lead to the oldest barking at the youngest...welp this time wasn't the same, next thing I know my youngest one has a gash under his left eye and knowing him if I don't immediately take him in it will get infected. Here on Wednesday this happened at 10:15 a.m. I called immediately after panicking around the house trying to find my husband who stepped out to get the mail....called the staff was awesome, booked me an appointment at 11:00 a.m. my baby was taken in early and quickly examined. I feel so much more calm right after I made the reservation that relief of just panic when you see your dog bleeding is the worst, but I know he is in the best of care. It's 11:05am and I just received the call diagnostic, he will have antibiotics, ointments and a nice scar. read more

We have taken our dog for regular exam and vaccination for the few years at this office. I notice this year, the office visit cost is $70, and it went up nearly 50% compared to last year. All other items (basic test, vaccine shorts) went up by ~20-30% compared to last year. I googled average office visit cost and realize they are on the high side of Austin and national range. I have been bringing my kitties to Travis country for the past 5 years and have always had a great experience. Dr. Buys and her tech are always super gentle and sweet toward my cats. Even when they get shots they never look uncomfortable. I took my 13 yr old Westie for a senior wellness checkup along with other issues. I was able to get a visit that fits my schedule with no issues making an appointment online. Dr. Lauren Buys was attentive and listened to my dog's issues and my concerns. I showed her different cbd oils and other medicines I give my dog. She gave me her advice but never pressured me to go one way or another. We saw Dr. Sam Seider and were so happy!! He provided excellent care to our fur baby and she had a great experience at the vet. She typically is very shaky and afraid at the vet but he did a great job introducing himself to her and letting her sniff all his instruments prior to use. This seemed to really calm her. She also got little treats throughout her exam which helped build their rapport. They also didn't push any extra expensive treatments or tests, they presented options but told us what they thought was or wasn't necessary. So glad we found them! read more

UPDATE: We managed to get our dog seen by a different vet on Friday. They immediately figured out what was wrong. He had a terrible bacterial/yeast infection on his paw. They prescribed multiple medications and antibiotics. Absolutely unbelievable that this was missed on TWO separate visits to Travis Country Veterinary Hospital, in both cases with us being sent home saying "nothing's wrong with him." Our dog spent 10 days in pain because of this incompetence. That's putting aside how rudely we were treated when we tried to bring him in for the third time. Details below. I reiterate: AVOID THIS VET. This is the worst vet in Austin. Do not under any circumstance take your pets here. STAY AWAY. Our dog, Bowser, was having major issues with his paw. He was limping and licking it non-stop. We brought him in and they said they found nothing wrong. We were sent home. But he was still limping, licking his paw and absolutely miserable. We brought him back 4 days later saying there's definitely something wrong and we needed him looked at again. We took him in, they told us they couldn't see anything, and sent us home. We waited another 6 days and called again this afternoon, because he's in pain and nothing has changed. They said we could bring him in and he'd be seen before close. We drove all the way there. When we arrived we encountered a belligerent, obnoxious tech who told my wife in the car that there was no room and he couldn't be seen at all. She said no one had told us to come in - which was just flat out wrong. So we had to drive away with our poor dog in pain. Again. Only this time he wasn't even looked at by anyone. And I was called a liar by this horrible woman when all we're trying to do is help our dog. They do not care about the animals. They do not care about the people. They are absolutely awful. My dog swallowed a tennis ball so i was scared to take her into the vet- wasn't sure about the news ($) i would receive to get her back to healthy. The vet cleared her schedule, on a Friday, to get my dog into surgery just minutes after her initial exam. My dog was immediately taken care of and the vet worked with me to make sure everything was taken care of. The doctors and vet techs at Travis Country have always gone above and beyond in caring for my animals. When my Ragdoll, Sophia, was diagnosed with diabetes, they spent as much time as I needed to learn how to give her injections and they helped me figure out ways to care for her within my budget. When my orange tabby, Cletus, was diagnosed with chronic renal failure, they supported my decision to keep him happy with long term care. They inject him with subcutaneous fluids three times a week, and they always greet me and Cletus with a smile even if we arrive unexpectedly or when they are busy. I honestly owe Travis Country for saving Cletus' life, and for helping me keep Sophia happy for as long as possible. When it comes to pups, the doctors at Travis Country have skillfully performed two surgeries on our dog, Dusty, and Dr. Buys still asks about him when I bring Cletus in for fluids. You will not find this level of personal care and investment in your pets anywhere else in town. read more

I hate to downgrade the Veterinary office I've used and loved for over 20 years, but Dr. Trlica's retirement changes everything. I recently took my Bichon for his annual shots and was told that Dr. Trlica had retired. I decided to go ahead and visit, and asked for Dr. Murphee. I had seen her once during an illness and really liked her style. When we arrived, we were show into the room and given a Dr. who's name isn't even on the building or list. She was definitely not Dr. Murphee, and while she was adequate and friendly enough, she was very young. I chose Corky because he was the real deal--a country vet who made decisions based on experience. And, I really resent not having my requests for a particular Dr. honored. I used to love this vet office and back when Dr. John worked here, this place rocked. Over the past two years, we have been more and more dissatisfied. The last two times I've been there, the vet was running at least an hour late. The next time I specifically asked, they said 20 mins, and she hasn't even stepped into the exam room for the previous client by 20 mins. So I just saw a vet tech and left. Additionally, my dog has had gunky ears for the past two years. We've been there for at least two physicals, and in both she sniffed my dog's ear, declared I should just try changing his food and that it didn't smell like an infection. After the second dismissal, I noticed my dog yelping when I touched his ear. Went back within a month if previous appt and insisted on anti fungal. The vet tech said it could be bacterial. I said treat him for both and she offered to test instead. TEST? Why was I never offered this $18 test when I kept saying I suspected fungal for two whole years?!! His ear is cured now after a week of anti fungal. My disdain is not. Shame on them for withholding a simple test and letting him suffer for so long. read more

Not very long ago, I nominated Dr. Corky Trlica for GOD. But now I learn that after many, many years of working miracles here at Travis Country, Corky has retired. We see Dr. Murphree now. I expect her to bring home gold in the ANGEL category pretty handily this year. We became Travis Country fans back in 1996. Ten years later, we moved out to Spicewood, where I tried for another full decade to find another vet clinic of the same quality and worthy of the same trust. Through those repeated, often very expensive failures, I learned what an extraordinary place this is. One of the joys of our recent return to Austin was finally, and once again, having the world's greatest vet clinic just right around the corner. This place is not fancy looking. Who gives a rip. The care is world class, and the price you pay for it is more reasonable that anything I've found within 30 miles in ten years of looking. Every single person I've sent to Travis Country loves it for its staff, care, and cost. It is a true gem. Go here. I am so thrilled to have found this vet. Got in to see vet in a timely manner, the employees are kind and patiently answered all of my paranoid-new-parent questions, but best of all THE PRICE! For the new patient check-up, a first round of puppy shots, a tapeworm pill was all only $75! We also received a free first dose (oral pill given once every month) of Triflexis which kills and prevents flea infestation, prevents heart-worms, and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections. This is THE place to take your pets. We have been trying out different vets in Austin for the 4 years we have lived here and I haven't found a better one! The staff is compassionate and knowledgeable. I never feel pressured to do unnecessary and expensive tests as I have at other vets because here its about the pets, not the how high they can get your bill. We took our dog, Zeppelin, here because he was very sick. Dr. Buys gave us some suggestions and when he started getting sicker, she referred us to a specialty vet.IT was then we found he had late stage lymphoma, and struggled with the decision whether to do chemo or not. When we decided to decline chemo and treat him with steroids, the specialty vet left us with no guidance or suggestions. Feeling very lost and confused, we called Dr. Buys. Dr. Buys took the time to talk to us on the phone (many, many times) and she gave us guidance with Zep's hospice care. She was very patient and understanding every time we talked to her or came in for an appointment. She even called to check on Zep a couple times. When the time came to help Zeppelin cross the rainbow bridge, the staff at Travis Country was very compassionate and sensitive, giving us the time we needed with Zep. In this difficult time, we could not have asked for better care from Dr. Buys and the staff at Travis Country. We won't be taking our other pets anywhere else! read more

This review is long overdue. My two dogs have been patients of Dr. Buys and co. since 2009. The docs and staff are always caring and professional. We're always told about our options re. treatment, and conservative (and correspondingly less expensive) treatment is always offered before more aggressive and expensive treatments. They cured our rescue dog who had heartworms when we adopted her and worked with us on the treatment price. We've also trusted them to repair our other girl's torn ACL (she's in surgery at the time of this writing) - the price is unbelievably reasonable and the surgeon called my wife before he began to confirm that he concurs with the diagnosis and that he'd begin shortly (even though we already signed all the consents and disclosures earlier) - what great bedside manner! We've tried a couple of other vets in town and this place is our choice for our doggies. read more

This is a follow-up to the comment left below to my earlier review. Yes, I used the on-line booking site to schedule the operations. When I realized that the on-line booking process didn't have an appointment type of nuetering or spaying, I called and spoke to someone who told me to just use the well-visit appointment and add to the notes of what procedures I needed. Waiting a couple of weeks to call me is unacceptable, especially when the call was to tell me nothing was available. Perhaps it didn't occur to you that an appointment "just two days later" wasn't convenient, and that the day I chose was the only day in a couple of weeks that I could bring them in. Insinuating that a 2 day postponement isn't really an inconvenience exemplifies the lack of customer service showed by the front office staff. I stand by my earlier review. The vets are good. The front office staff needs to be replaced. read more

First, I would like to say that I have already contacted Travis Country, so this review will not be a shock to them. I visited Dr. Parsons last week with my 8 year old Great Dane. She had developed a limp and of course, I took her to the vet. We have only seen Dr. Parsons twice since she is still relatively new there so, I was a bit nervous but she made me feel at ease by saying that she has had dane's in the past herself. What a relief! She then asked me where I thought the pain was and I told her. She then felt around her shoulder and leg and that did not really produce any pain from my dog. Her suggestion was to do physical therapy myself at home and to apply ice on her shoulder. If I wanted to be referred to an Acupuncturist, I could do that. I have to give myself a hard time here because I know better (I am in a medical profession) I should have pushed for more but I was just so glad that she didn't think her issue was severe. I asked who she would recommend for acupuncture and left the clinic. I had my appointment with the new clinic (Acupuncture) yesterday and right away the doctor watched her walk to see where the limp was coming from and then followed with x-rays because she is an 8 year old dane, the doctor wanted to rule out anything bad. Well, it is bad. My baby has Osteosarcoma, a very aggressive form of bone cancer. I called Travis Country this morning and asked to speak to Dr. Parsons or the Manager, Stephanie. Stephanie took the call and I told her all of the above. When I told her about her diagnosis, her response was, "Oh, my!" I told her that I felt Dr. Parsons needed to know this information so that in the future she could consider working up her patients differently. Stephanie then said, "I will let her know and see what she says." No, I'm sorry, condolence or what was your name again? My response to her was, "well, thanks so much for your sympathy.You have my number if you need to reach me." And with a chuckle in her voice she said ok and good bye. Although we've been taking our pets to Travis Country since the late 1980's (this is where my mom took our family pets) I'm only just now writing this review because I took it for granted everyone knows the great work of Dr. Corky & co. Know that all the vets, vet techs, admins and even the resident kitties are fantastic. This is the suburban equivalent of a small town country vet. On our most recent visit with cat, Lucky, got into a scuffle with a squirrel and got an abscessed wound for his trouble. They fixed him right up and showed me how to administer his at-home meds. Our most impressive interaction with Travis Country Vet Hospital was once again with cat, Lucky. Somehow or another he had been shot in the hind leg with a pellet gun. We thought (un)Lucky had gotten attacked by a dog, but Dr. Corky knew something else was going on in that leg. A quick x-ray confirmed so Lucky, who was already on the kitty version of morphine, had a pelletectomy and a good clean-up. He was home with us that night. I think their prices are fair. Not the most expensive (you won't get a latte in the waiting room), not the cheapest (because they invest in what they need to provide the best for their patients), but fair. Honestly I think I would have paid a lot more for a lot less anywhere else. We can get in quickly and I don't feel that I'm being charged unnecessarily. read more

I have used this clinic for the last 20 years. I have always received excellent service for my fur babies. This last week my senior lab had to be put to sleep. The compassion and care we received is beyond measure. Dr. Seder, Presley, Julia, and Brittany made this process as gentle as possible for all of us.
