When our Doberman, Hopper, tore his Achilles, we were referred to a board-certified surgeon. The total costs for a required clotting test, an MRI and the surgery was almost 7000.00. There was no way we could afford that, but also no way to break our daughter's heart. We found VSS through Yelp and called immediately. All in, surgery, meds, and post-op we paid less than $2200.00. LeeAnn, who was the first person I spoke to, was encouraging, detailed in her instructions to care for our dog before surgery, and clear about the records I would need to provide before the first visit. From the time I entered the facility, I was very impressed with all the staff. The surgery went well, the post-op visits were thorough and clear in noting progress and next steps. Unfortunately, in the recovery process, I accidently hit my dog's let getting him into my car. I was in tears, and they were very empathetic and assured me Hopper would be ok. True to their work, Hopper has regained his name - running, hopping onto furniture and our deck. I have referred our co-worker and another acquaintance to VSS. I consider this one of the most important reviews I've written because of the time, money, care, etc that went into the overall TPLO process. So buckle up. My pup tore her ccl sometime back in May 2022, she's a 6 year old pit, about 60lbs, and sometimes thinks she's more athletic than she is. I was moving to Austin a month later so I had to put treatment on hold. After arriving, my vet confirmed that she believed it was a torn CCL. I started digging in to do research and found VSS. I first went to them and, honestly, that first experience was terrible. My pup was never a huge fan with vets but she was mostly okay but I think the move brought her to another level. They take her back to the exam room without me, which was rough. She ended up letting go of her bowels and then broke her dewclaw. So the "tech/front desk staff" came out and told me they had to sedate her to fix that and would use that time to also xray her. It was overwhelming and honestly planned on never looking back at this place. The office manager did tell me on the phone they should've decided to delay the appt so I could bring her back in on trazodone or have sedated her from the beginning. They gave me a quote which included every single little charge, not just for surgery day but also for follow ups and PT. I went on my way to go find a board certified surgeon, well I went down that path and went with the most well known group in Austin. They offered up one of their new surgeons, who wasn't yet board certified, and everything would need to be done at my vet. The cost was higher and included only the surgery, no follow up, no PT. I joined some TPLO support groups on Facebook, found people who used Dr. Lewis and eventually decided to go back. This time we were prepared, she was on trazodone to go in for surgery. Dr. Lewis called after and confirmed it was successful. He checked her other leg while she was down (due to overuse, sometimes the tear happens in the other leg) and told me to keep an eye on it. I picked her up and we started our healing journey. ***one thing to note here, work with the front desk staff on or before surgery day to book all follow up and PT visits, it can be a bit confusing*** She did well recovering. Having the ipportunity to go back in and have her PT sessions as well as knowing the vet was looking at her progress was in immeasurably valuable. They did the watertreadmill and sent me videos. They gave feedback on next steps like increasing walking times or doing exercises at home. By the 8 week check up (I think it was 8) she was cleared to continue slowly working up to full activity and no more PT was needed. I didn't use all my sessions so I actually got money back. After each session, the PT brought her out and gave me an update and gave me a chance to ask questions. I did get to meet Dr. Lewis at least once during these follow up visits, I do believe it was the first follow up. Also, by the end of these visits, no more trazodone was needed because she was going in just fine. Surgery was mid- August 2022. I am writing this mid-March 2023, so 7 months later. Here to report we go on weekly 3 mile hikes to Turkey Creek and Walnut Creek without any issue. Her leg muscle seems to be fully restored and we have no problems, like she was before tearing her CCL. We do avoid dog parks because, while I'm confident if I need to go back to VSS, I'm not looking for more surgeries for her. Her scar is super minimal, you honestly wouldn't know that she had this done. I'm so thankful to Dr. Lewis and his team. So happy I chose VSS. For those who need these for their dogs: 1. I am single and alone, so recovery was fully on me. 2. I live on the 3rd floor with no elevator, I got stronger during this time but I did it. She was good to use stairs pretty quickly, just super slowly. 3. The recovery support provided at VSS was the most important thing as her owner. You can get through this! read more

I can't recommend them enough. Just got back from my dog's final check-up post-CCL repair surgery and he's good as new. VSS provided us with so much helpful and organized information beforehand, so we were extra prepared and it made the whole process so much easier. Dr. Lewis did an amazing job, but I also want to shout out the staff. When my dog got sick a day before his scheduled surgery, they were quick to move things around and get us re-scheduled within a week. They were GREAT at handling my small but mighty dog - he's an angel at home but a demon at the vet, and it's always a struggle. The staff was unflappable but also gentle with him, and I'm so grateful for them. It's great it is to see a business that's not trying to make a buck. My dog died from an easily diagnosable, yet neglected to be considered metastatic cancer 2 days after his surgery at VSS. After a poor recovery experience, I brought him to the ER where on a simple chest and abdominal X-ray they discovered he had cancer in his lungs, pancreas, and bladder. During no part of the surgical evaluation appointment was it recommended to me to have any additional imaging done prior to the surgery. I would have NEVER put my dog through a difficult surgery knowing he was riddled with cancer. During the entire process, before and after the surgery, I was never allowed to meet the surgeon, which I felt was very cold and odd. My pet was a senior dog, and I was not able to have a realistic conversation with the surgeon about the potential prognosis of the surgery. I was going back and forth on whether to do the surgery or not, and provided zero resources to make an informed decision. During the eval, all communication was through the tech in the lobby of the clinic with her going back and forth through a door with every question I had. I wasn't even allowed in the exam room for the appointment. After the surgery I received a 30 second call from the surgeon saying everything went fine. No one called to follow up on how he was recovering the next day, which was not well, and they don't have any on call or after hours phone line, even for triage questions. The lack of hands on and compassionate intake and follow up is beyond disappointing I realize this is a surgical clinic whose job is to do surgery, and I am by no means blaming them for the death of my pet, but holistic and comprehensive medical care should include education and consideration on when NOT to do surgery, for example on a dog with metastatic cancer. read more

Horrible experience here, office manager and the woman that answers the phone are so rude, I asked them to have the Dr. call me, and they said they wouldn't even give you the message. Well, I would like to speak to you personally Dr. Lewis, if that's not too much to ask. You must be aware of the front desk issues, other people in the comments have reported the same. As far as my request to just put your eyes on Honey's happy tail, I really just wanted to know if it was an emergency since it's black on the tip. But realize after spending $3500 with you, that was too much to ask. I know you gave me a quote for docking ($1100 is expensive!) but I can't afford that, and just wanted an opinion on how you thought it was healing since she's been wearing a "tail saver" - btw which I highly recommend for any dogs suffering with happy tail. She'll need an additional hip surgery at some point, and I will never come back to your establishment. It's sad that your office culture is to treat clients badly when we actually pay their salaries and deserve respect. We attempted to get our pup fixed up here with Veterinary Surgical Solutions and I gotta say we were surprised and disappointed at the front desk staff there. I completely understand Dr. Lewis's desire to help the community at an affordable cost, but the front desk staff is just rude and confrontational. They accused us of the same; but we were put on the defensive nearly immediately. I attempted to escalate my concerns to management via LinkedIn but when the Doctor read my letter, I got fired as a customer. So Dr. Lewis is complicit in this business decision and he is demonstrating that he does not care and is fine with his front desk staff as they are. I don't want to hurt anyone's business, but I have to share my response because I found several others saying the same thing. I am not sure how this vet clinic has so many stars on here. I'm not really sure why this transpired the way it did, but it did and I'm still quite annoyed nearly 2 months later. I called VSS to schedule our dog for a consult, and they told me I needed to go online, fill out the forms, etc. So I did, had the records sent, waited several days, and finally got a call back. They told me that they wouldn't even take our dog because he had orthopedic surgery with someone else, and now that he's having an issue years later, it's basically that surgeons problem and I had to go back to them. I cam here because our dog is having a problem due to the gross negligence of another surgeon, and after returning to them, again, they too, sent us away to another orthopedist because they don't know how to fix it. Impersonal, assembly line care. I work with an animal sanctuary that probably has 20 animals a year that need extensive surgery of one type or another. We are a nonprofit so we are always looking for more affordable options. To use a department store analogy, we're always looking for a "Target" rather than a "Nordstrom"--lower prices but still pretty good quality. This place is.closer to a Dollar Tree. The first time I took a dog to them, I never even saw a vet. A couple of receptionists took the dog in the back without talking to me at all. After the surgery, the same receptionist types brought him back out and handed him off to me with only the bare minimum of care instructions. Follow-up visits were the same: totally impersonal, no hint of an actual vet, and no opportunity to ask any questions. The next dog we tried to take to them had been hit by a car and had a broken leg. We tried to send them x-rays from our regular vet (something we've done multiple times with other surgical vets) to see if surgery to repair the break was needed, but they wouldn't even look at the x-rays unless we brought the dog in. I can understand needing to examine the dog eventually, but we're nearly an hour away and just wanted a quick impression as to whether there was any point in finding a volunteer to transport the dog. Of course we would have been happy to pay an appointment fee to get them to look at the x-ray, but got no further than a bored receptionist referring us to their online appointment request. By the time we sorted that out and got them to actually look at an x-ray, too much time had passed to consider surgery so we ended up treating that dog elsewhere. Finally, today we attempted to take another dog that has a potentially life threatening problem and appears to be in pain. I drove an hour through construction and rush hour traffic, unloaded the dog and his wagon (he can't walk) and wheeled him.into their office exactly 9 minutes late, only to be told they couldn't see him anymore. While that was certainly very irritating to me (and even more irritating for the dog!) if they are stacking appointments so close together that 9 minutes meant we had missed our window, I'd rather take the dog somewhere else anyway. It might be more expensive to find a vet that will actually talk to me and spend more than 9 minutes examining my dog, but I think that will probably be money well-spent. Affordable doesn't have to mean cut-rate. There are better options out there. read more

Please, if you're considering taking your animal to this place, please take into consideration the bad reviews that are left here. I wish I listened. I have 5 animals that have lived with me in 5 different states and by a very, very, very large margin, this was the WORST vet experience I have ever had. You can tell that the front desk receptionists have a proclivity towards dealing with unhappy customers because they have their excuses for unprofessional and impersonal vet practices locked and loaded and ready to fire at the first mention of dissatisfaction let alone a complaint. In my initial confusion with learning that you do not get to speak with the surgeon AT ALL through the pre-check exam or on the day of the surgery but that the Doctor might give you a measly phone call post op, they were very quick to meet that initial confusion and concern with "If you do not like the way things are done here, you can go elsewhere." Which set the tone for the rest of the visit. Against my better judgment, I continued on with the exam. My dog was behind closed doors for (truly no exaggeration) 3 minutes and then they brought her back out to tell me that I have to spend "well over thousands of dollars" for surgery. (I didn't wait around long enough to hear the estimate) When I started to ask questions about the specifics and especially the thoroughness of the exam, I was reminded yet again and with attitude this time, that I can take my dog elsewhere. At that point, I paid them for their ohh soo diligent and professional exam of my dog and walked out. I only spoke with one of the two receptionists there but the grown woman that I did interact with had the professionalism and demeanor of a teenager that's there just for the paycheck. If you treat your pet like a number, then this is definitely the place to take them because that's exactly how they'll treat them there. All they care about there is money and numbers and it's so painfully apparent once you're there. They see dollar signs walk through the door as opposed to a person with their whole world on a leash. However, if you do treat your pet like a member of your family or like one of your children, I beg you to stay clear of this horrible place. We found a dog that had been dumped near our home. She had been shot with pellets and both hips were injured & healed. I took her immediately to my vet, thinking there was no way that we would keep the poor dog, but wanting to get her back to good health before trying to find her a home. My vet group quoted me $5000 for hip surgery. I cried because I knew no one would adopt a pet so injured and the shelter would definitely put her down. When I got home, I started googling for options and found VSS. I took Mollie to VSS where she underwent a Femoral Head Osteotomy on the worst of the two hips. The repetitive dishonesty and cowardice of this business has driven me away from what could have eased my aging dog's pain. I initially contacted this office in Summer 2021 for the treatment of my dog's torn CCL on her right leg. Anybody who's had experience with this knows it's an excruciating experience for the pet and the parent, so I was quick to seek treatment. I had trusted that their website displayed the true and correct pricing for their supposed "all inclusive package" for an CCL repair. If anything, I thought that their website price would be honored as advertised. However, I quickly realized that this corporate establishment was quick to sneak in hidden fees, attempt to convince me of more services, and immediately negate every assurance that I had with them. They repeatedly argued with me about their stated prices that I had tried to confirm online, over the phone, and even in person. Their claim regarding physical therapy being included had an additional charge post surgery, even though it stated on their website that it "includes initial rehab evaluation, 8 rehab sessions and any expected post-op exams/x-rays" (TPLO, https://vssaustin.com/price-sheet/); at the time, I thought it was too good to be true, only to confirm that it was not really true after all. I asked for honesty, but all they gave me were excuses and lies. In one conversation, I recall that a staff member had called me to report that the doctor had detected tears in both CCLs. I was distraught and asked for her opinion on what I should do, too caught up in my fears and worries to realize that I was really talking to a saleswoman in disguise. She told me that the doctor can take care of both CCLs a few months apart from one another. I asked verbatim, "Does this price cover both surgeries?" and she responded positively that it would cover both legs. It was a mistake to not get that statement in writing or some form of record, because come surgery day, I asked once again as confirmation and was told that I'd have to pay for each surgery separately. Dr. Kirk Lewis gave me a follow up call to inform me that the operation went smoothly; I took this chance to ask him about what happened to the left leg. Interestingly enough, he said that he didn't see anything wrong with it and that an additional surgery wouldn't be needed. Post surgery, I went to retrieve my dog and was confronted with fees that they had forgotten to mention prior. I felt I had no choice but to pay it since the service had already been completed. They then asked me whether I wanted to do physical therapy which I had previously seen was part of the package. I agreed, but the staff immediately told me that I would be billed for extra. This was incredibly sly of them, so I pointed out the discrepancy, only to be told that what I paid for was the surgery; the therapy would be an entirely separate entity. Even after my bad experience, I couldn't deny that Dr. Kirk Lewis is a very skilled surgeon and his repair on my dog's right CCL was immaculate. I was willing to give him another try in May 2022 after my dog's left leg tore a year later. Knowing that this practice would falsify prices again, I called to confirm costs and to get a full breakdown of necessary services, only to be rudely directed to the FAQ and be told to refer to it by the owner himself. I still cannot fathom how Owner Kirk Lewis and Manager Terry Hackworth feel like it is necessary to blatantly lie to patients who are asking for candor. If the upfront price were true, he would be worth every penny. However, the dishonesty continues to affect customers and even more so, our pets. I'm severely disappointed in both the legality of this practice and the moral alignment of the staff. I had assumed that any veterinary institute would have been putting the benefit of pets first and foremost, but I can see now that this isn't the case. To end this review, I've since been blacklisted from this clinic for "talking about prices" during my visit, which should be any pet parent's right to do in order to be prepared for much needed care, and my dog is still without treatment. I hope this review dissuades any other family from trusting this office with their beloved pet. The amount of pain my dog is in because of their stalling and lies is unacceptable. It should not be on the patients to distrust and question everything that staff say, nor is it correct for the business to take advantage of their patients' trust. Because of all the good reviews I read, all the info the VSS staff gave me, and the staff's responsiveness over email and phone, I was comfortable not meeting Dr. Lewis in person before the surgery. I did meet him after the surgery, and he is lovely. It seems like he just wants to focus on maximizing the service he provides -- operating on animals -- instead of spending time answering questions from pet owners, which his staff handles. As a business owner myself, I really respect that he set up a practice in the way that works best for him, especially since he passes savings on to his patients. We went there because our dog, Ginger, needed TPLO surgery in both hind legs. With no exaggeration, Ginger was probably their most difficult patient of all time. Equipped with a fatty and flexible neck, small head, intelligence, and perseverance, it was impossible to keep a traditional cone on Ginger. No matter how tight, she would just get it off and go right for her stitches. As well, nearly all cone alternatives would work for a day or two before she'd figure out how to get out of them. In spite of this, VSS remained very patient with us, continued offering suggestions, and finally finding one that would work so she could heal properly. They got to know Ginger very well and in spite of her skeptical nature of strangers, she was always pleased to see the staff. The net result is, it's only been a few weeks since her second surgery and her gait is perfectly normal. I understand that choosing a surgeon for TPLO surgery can be a stressful decision. They were relatively strict though about home care but I mean they have to be so you don't mess up all the progress they make from surgical procedures. But they are really good people here. She answered my questions, explained the process to me including taking my dog's xrays to the doc for a second opinion. Willow's surgery went well and her follow up PT appts were also helpful in her overall recovery. I waited a good month after the experience to make sure I wasn't just ranting here. At first glance, VSS was a great place, came recommended. I believe it's the cost that drives a lot of folks here in the first place. Our 14 year old Jack Russell needed ACL surgery and we opted to have a papilloma removed from his eyelid. Pros: Cost, speed, recover at home (rather than spend the night) Cons: Never got to meet the doctor, he was always too busy in surgery. The "simple eye procedure" turned into a nightmare after a week, and because if the cauterization, our poor dog's eyelid structure changed so his eyelashes were poking into his eye, causing an ulcer on the surface. It took 48 hours for their team to get back to me after I called 4 times (after hours and during biz hours). In fact, that's another con, you have to KNOW which number to call during what hours. Come on VSS, haven't you heard of call forwarding? Finally, they prescribed the wrong medicine which caused some severe issues with his breathing and never admitted to making this mistake! If you want to choose VSS because of cost, be sure your vet is ready to take on the after-care and problems that will go with this because they are not equipped, nor do they have the time, to help you post-op. They just care your dog up until the operation day. read more

We have had a wonderful experience with Dr Lewis and the team at VSS! We couldn't recommend them more. Our sweet chihuahua Hartsel had luxating patellas on both of her back legs and had to have MPL surgery on both of them two weeks ago. We took her to a few places to get opinions but felt so much more comfortable with the team at VSS. When we arrived for our first appointment (and all of the subsequent ones) her name was up on a whiteboard in the window welcoming her. That in and of itself made a big difference. Because of covid restrictions we weren't able to go in with her but everything was handled very safely, we waited in our car with our masks on and Marian came out wearing a mask and got Hartsel for her appointment. A few minutes later we got a all explaining what was going on with her joint and the different surgical options for her. Everyone was so patient with us along the way, answering all of our questions and listening to our concerns and nerves. The day of her surgery Dr. Lewis called us after she woke up from her anesthesia to tell us how well the surgery went and to update us on care instructions for when we picked her up. For the pat two weeks we have been following the care instructions very closely and today she had her first physical therapy appointment. Because we were not able to join her in the building for that they sent us video of her on the water treadmill and using their other rehabilitation devices. If you want an affordable streamlined experience this is the place. My husband and I took in an abandoned dog as a few months ago. She had a bilateral inguinal hernia and we have had a really tough time finding a vet who seemed confident taking her on. They take your dog in, but leave you in the waiting area. You also don't get to meet the surgeon. It's their way of keeping costs down. I don't think I'd love it for a routine checkup, but in this case I didn't really mind. Nobody really wants to see their dog being poked and prodded and I'm sure they are much more efficient without owners tagging along. The front desk staff were very helpful- over the phone and in person. They gave us very detailed instructions about aftercare and even premeasured every syringe of medication so it was easier for us. read more

Our sweet 6 year old boxer had some tumors that needed to be removed. After talking to two other vets, we were quoted between $2,200-2,800 for the surgery. As we were debating what to do, I was at Bark n Purr talking to the owner who has boxers and she recommended VSS. I am so thankful for CJ because their quote was almost half of what we were expecting! The day of the surgery, we bring Amber in and the check in process was quick, they were so sweet with her and when I paid, they explained it was a deposit so the final total may be different depending on how the surgery went. A few hours later, I get the call that Amber was in recovery and would be ready for pick up so when I returned, I was told there was a CREDIT! Never have I ever - in any medical field - been offered a REFUND for their services. I was blown away by their honesty and really appreciated it. During recovery, Amber wasn't eating much so I called over the weekend and Terry was so patient and gave great advice! Really appreciate such great customer service. this place is absolutely incredible. i'm february our 2 great pyrenees puppies got out and got hit by a car. one of them died on impact and the other, bandit, broke his femur. we had the worst experience ever having no emergency vets available in austin and ended up having to go to san antonio. after wasting a ton of time and money, i finally found veterinary surgical solutions. from my very first conversation with them, they were absolutely fantastic. every single member of staff was incredibly empathetic and professional. it also helps that they have amazing prices that cannot be beat. on surgery day, Dr. Lewis called me himself to let me know how it went and reassured me that our baby bandit was in excellent hands. i cannot recommend this place enough, they made our horrible situation a bit more bearable. thank you SO much to all the amazing staff! read more

I was referred by my vet to Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital after my puppy fractured her paw. Long story short - they performed the realignment operation properly but did not provide great aftercare which caused my puppy's leg and paw to become terribly infected with sores. Not only did they deny any wrongdoing on their part, but also insisted that I continue to pay for their overpriced procedures even though I knew my puppy didn't need them. That was when I contacted Veterinary Surgical Solutions. They were very straight forward with me and did not try to charge me for services that I didn't need. I was so so so happy to finally find a place that wasn't full of s****. I mean having your pet undergo surgery is stressful enough, you shouldn't have to go broke trying to pay for it. They took great care of my puppy and I was only charged for what absolutely needed to be done. Their prices were amazing! I paid about a quarter of the price of CTVSH, and they made the whole process very convenient and easy for me. All the surgical and billing information was emailed to me the day of, and the staff was great at keeping in touch with me and letting me know the process every step of the way. When our almost 15 year old Westie started limping at the beginning of this year, we thought it was due to hip and joint problems. Fast forward through multiple vet visits, x-rays, and discussions, we were given quotes for a biopsy and amputation from VSS as well as another facility to take care of the growth in our dog's femur. My husband and I had a difficult time wrapping our heads around the news we received. We decided to go with VSS not only because they were less expensive, but they also made us feel comfortable with the decision we were making. The day of the biopsy, it turned out that our Westie needed to have his leg amputated as it had completely weakened since the last x-ray and had 2 fractures. Dr. Lewis, Terry, and their team did an excellent job amputating the leg and our Westie was already trying to hop around by day four of recovery. I was very pleased with the service we got today. We didn't have to wait, everything was explained clearly, the tests, treatment plan, recommendations. They are wonderful, and instead of surgery, physical therapy was prescribed and it was a very reasonable rate. I received a follow-up call, and they worked with me and my elderly dog's special needs for scheduling. They were just perfect, prompt, thorough, they explain in layman's terms, and they were reasonably priced. I'm so relieved to find an orthopedic vet for my old girl. read more

All of the information VSS gave in the "response" is completely false. I never even spoke to this person in person or over the phone, but he wants to act like he knows everything. He didn't dispense the drugs. He didn't answer the phone when I called about my cat having a reaction to the overdose. He wasn't any part of the experience - not in November & not earlier this month. My cat was heavily bruised the day OF THE SURGERY. His ENTIRE abdomen. We followed all of their instructions to a "T." My CAT destroyed the plastic POS e-collar they provided - with gauze as a "collar" to keep it on. We switched out the gauze for a real collar. We taped & re-taped the plastic part TWO times before it became completely unusable. He kept being able to get to his incision site. (All he did was lick - do you really think a cat would bruise his entire abdomen? What is he doing? Punching himself in the stomach over & over?) It was only after we BOUGHT a high quality e-collar (that yes was soft but was longer so there was no way he could get to his incision) that the collar stayed on & he wasn't able to get to his incision site any longer. We just learned that our cat has extensive scarring from the surgery being done incorrectly, which is creating even MORE issues with him urinating. This issue will require ANOTHER surgery (will NOT be done at VSS). Ultimately, he may have to be put down because of this. I literally may have to put down my 2 yr old cat because of the mistakes of this office. I wish I'd never looked for a more "financially friendly" office to do the surgery. I should've just paid double the price to have it done RIGHT at the vet office I TRUST. Aside from all of MY issues - just consider the fact that you never get to accompany your pet during exams, the staff (especially the "receptionist") is RUDE, they obviously blame owners for THEIR mistakes and you never talk to the veterinarian - only messages relayed through staff - is enough to warn you about this place. STAY FAR FAR AWAY. I filed a complaint with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. read more

Having to bring your pet anywhere for surgery is stressful, and hard, and expensive. While VSS may not be the traditional experience in regards to your pet being seen, they are an affordable option should surgery be necessary. I am very grateful that I was referred here after being told my cat needed to have his ear canal removed. I was quoted a very high price from my regular vet. I decided to get a second opinion. They also recommended surgery, and when I brought up that the cost was more than I could spend, they advised me to contact VSS. I was able to get a quote over the phone from them before even scheduling the initial consultation visit. I must admit I was super nervous not being able to go back into the exam room with my cat. But from an efficiency standpoint I can understand the reasoning. The staff is incredibly understanding and supportive. Should you ever find yourself in a situation with a pet needing surgery, and cost is an issue, I would take the time to contact VSS. read more

I actually did not get to meet the doctor or use their services, but just based on my interaction with Terry and Dr. Lewis over email I am very pleased with them and want to leave them a positive review. My cat and I are from Washington, DC and we were hemorrhaging money thanks subpar care on behalf of my local orthopedic vet clinic. It was very apparent whatever I was doing was not working so I discontinued care with the DC orthopedists. I didn't know where else to look because virtually every other vet I called in the area referred to the clinic I was using. I had a vet tech friend offer to look after my cat's bandaging and she suggested it'll probably be more affordable to fly my cat out and look for a surgeon in Austin than to continue splinting at my local place for another three months only for him to shake it off 4x in a week (I spent a good $800 in one week just to keep a cast on this cat if you want to know what type of numbers we were looking at). DC ortho quoted an astounding $4,200 for a ligament reconstruction surgery so I started asking around area vets in Austin. After sending numerous radiographs and the write up from two different clinics (I've seen a total of six different vets between three different clinics over the course of three weeks, two of those being emergency clinics before reaching out to Dr. Lewis. Do you understand why I would start looking for another vet?) Terry responded promptly that the doctor recommended *against* the surgery because it was unnecessary for my cat and that he was almost fully healed from his injury. I had another vet confirm this diagnosis that I am currently seeing as my managing orthopedist (in ATX) and my cat is currently doing *much* better and is due to remove his cast in half of the time the DC clinic recommended. It's just astounding how more more communication and transparency there is from Dr. Lewis and my current vet. I wasn't forced into unnecessary overpriced consults or made to pursue unnecessary surgery which told me that Dr. Lewis really does care about the well-being of your pets and not just about his wallet. I honestly do wish I live in Austin just so I can receive this affordable, honest, five star care for my cat regularly. I am so used to being nickeled and dimed and being sold unnecessary procedures and add ons by local vets in the DC area. It wasn't like I was going out of my way to find the cheapest, discount vet in America- I was getting crappy care from the over-priced Rolls Royce vets in DC and went to Texas and found even BETTER care for LESS. Long story short, yes- veterinary care is expensive, but you all in Austin have honest, transparent vets who care about your pets and their work is fraction of what I was paying in DC. Let it be known that I ended up saving tons of money flying my cat out to Austin vs. staying in DC for his care. read more

We adopted our pup through Austin Boxer Rescue (ABR), and VSS was our clinic for the heartworm treatment that he needed. Thankfully, ABR pays for the treatment since our dog had it when he was rescued, but VSS was great to work with! The VSS staff put us at ease during what can be a scary time for a dog owner, since dogs having HW treatment must be crate-bound for six weeks. Scheduling was simple, although there was some confusion on whether or not the dog would be boarded overnight. We dropped him off Monday morning, picked him up that afternoon, and then we brought him back the next day for his second injection. You could tell that the staff cares greatly for every dog they treat. They gave us copies of his medical records upon picking him up. I called a week later because he was starting to feel a little better and his energy level caused him to have accidents in his crate AND scrape up his nose trying to bust out of the kennel. They were more than willing to get us some medication to help keep him calm and drowsy so that he would REST. Thank you, VSS!
