Unfortunately over the past few years the front desk, support staff and veterinarian doctors have taken this clinic down to the bottom of a dumpster and lit it on fire. The way I already love this place. My dog had been sick for a few days and my normal vet like so many others didn't have any room to see her. I called all over for over two hours and finally got this gem. I had never been before and just needed someone to see my love and check her out. With in minutes the receptionist had me hold for like a minute. Then she comes back and is like yeah we can fit you in today. We will reach out to your regular vet to get her records and will see you soon. I was shocked at how sweet and willing to help these staff members seemed. With Austin growing so fast, things like this and human doctor visit are so hard to get appointments for. So needless to see this gesture didn't go unnoticed. Unfortunately they were charging us over double for prescriptions and refuse to authorize prescriptions for other pharmacies over the phone. So have to mail prescriptions into chewy. They charged 5$ to just write the script. They did not tell us this until after we left, and did not try to make it right or apologize for the inconvenience. Update: Holy cow, I didn't know how bad the service at Brykerwood was until I began taking my dogs to North Austin Animal Hospital. First off, my golden retriever was diagnosed with a serious heart murmur at Brykerwood. I suggested it might be anxiety and was almost mocked for the suggestion. Their vets were telling me to prepare to lose him or put him down. I was distraught. I took him to North Austin Animal Hospital and they found NO SIGNS of a murmur. Furthermore they said that yes, anxiety could cause something that sounds like a murmur. Next, my Labrador is a very lumpy dog. Brykerwood never wanted to remove the masses and let 2 get completely out of control and turn malignant. I had said for upwards of 2 years that I was concerned about those lumps, and they assured me that I was worried about nothing. After switching to North Austin Animal Hospital, I did not ask to get any but the most concerning lump removed because I thought the others were of no concern as Brykerwood had assured me. Guess what: the operating vet wanted to remove every lump that I was concerned about. A grand total of 7 concerning masses and 1 was malignant. Again Brykerwood had assured me that particular lump was of no concern. Bottom line: these people are so incompetent and rude. You should steer far clear. read more

Don't be mistaken though, not even 50 years of loyal patronage will stop them from imposing unnecessary on-the-spot fees if you're so much as eight minutes late to an appointment. It won't matter how many years you've been bringing your animals to them; it won't matter how many thousands upon thousands of dollars you've given them over the years of trusting them with your pets. Beware of the $30 "work in" fee if you are more than 5 minutes late-- they won't inform you of this ahead of time and they won't care how sick your pet is. If they don't get that money then that's it. They will show you absolutely zero understanding, compassion, or grace, no matter the situation. Dr. Heideman cares so little about you and your pets that she won't even come to the lobby to tell you about this "new policy" face-to-face. She cares so little that she would rather your pet suffer, and turn them away for services if she does not get her fee. How compassionate! What an impressive display of that "clear communication" that they claim to take pride in. This place has really gone downhill since Dr. Greg retired. My mother has been bringing her pets to this practice since the 70s. I've been bringing mine for 15+ years. I used to come with my mom when I was a child. This was our family vet that we loved. If you had asked me a week ago what I thought of this place, it would've been a lot more positive. We are understandably hurt, this was a massive slap in the face and middle finger to us. Our Jackson was displaying some troublesome symptoms (extreme fatigue, thinning hair, excessive thirst) right as we were set to leave the state with the dogs for a month. The staff and doctors here did everything they could to figure out what was wrong, and how bad the condition was, ruling out possible extremes. Jackson was ultimately diagnosed with Cushings disease, due to a tumor in his brain. It's a very sad diagnosis, but we got it promptly and we're sent to some specialists (upon request) for further discussions. We are working through treatment, so ongoing liver enzyme monitoring and symptoms management now with the help of the great vets here and with the specialists. And we are very grateful for their card. read more

I'm never taking my cats here again. While the majority of the doctors are great (with the exception of one who tried to sell me rodan & fields and another who flat out told me "I don't really know anything about cat behaviors" when I asked what was making my cat do something harmful to herself), the front desk and office staff is abhorrent. One of my cats has been regularly seeing a cardiologist for over a year now. He frequently needs to get blood tests at Brykerwood when he is on a new medication or to check that his levels are still balanced. Every time I try to arrange the blood test, there's different rules. I always expect to be put on hold repeatedly for a minimum of 15 minutes. Sometimes I'm hung up on. Usually they can't find his chart. Generally they're rude and condescending. Recently, he was put on a new diuretic and the cardiologist wanted a blood test in a few days so that his kidneys wouldn't be affected. I called at least twice to arrange it and both times was put on hold for 15+ minutes only to be told that they now needed dr. approval. Funny thing was, the cardiologist had sent it over at least a day prior. Cardiologist sent it again and I still did not get any response from brykerwood until almost the end of the day at nearly the end of the week. I was finally able to take him in and get a blood test but never heard anything from them about his results. Flash forward to this past weekend (almost a week after his blood test) where he stopped eating. He had a cardiologist appointment today and they told me that he is in KIDNEY FAILURE bc of the diuretic. Brykerwood never sent the test results to the cardiologist. When the vet nurse from the cardiologist office called, Brykerwood told her my cat hadn't been in since April, which is not true. Then they couldn't find his file. He had to get additional tests done at the cardiologist and I had to admit him to an animal hospital. When I called, nobody at Brykerwood would take any responsibility and all I got was lame excuses and a condescending tone. I was also put on hold for quite some time and then nobody knew why I was holding. Their behavior is extremely negligent and also costing me a lot of money. I still don't think they've sent the test results. Additionally, my friend had an awful experience with Brykerwood nearly a decade ago that also cost her a lot of money and grief and they also lost her dog's file. Was a patient of Brykerwood for multiple generations of animals over 30 years. While I've noticed a decline in quality in recent years, it's gotten much worse. The best Vets have left. The vets on staff seem young, inexperienced, and lack vital communication skills. I was proud to recommend Brykerwood for years. I will never bring one of my animals back there again. I'm not happy to share this, but I feel it's important to let others know what (and what not) to expect, which is expert veterinary care, communications skills, and perhaps most important, empathy for the animals and their human companions. Brykerwood is the absolute WORST. My brother's dog was throwing up constantly and coughing so he took him to get checked out, and they said nothing was wrong. Within a month, the dog was unable to stand up and quickly taken to the ER. At the ER, they said cancer was all over his body and there was no way to treat it. Cancer was in his lungs, kidneys, liver, and lymph nodes. Brykerwood did not even take an X-ray to explore what was wrong with the dog - how did it not occur to the vet to check for cancer or refer them to an oncologist? Now the dog has severe pneumonia and will likely die within the week. We are hoping for a few more days with him. This is a HORRIBLE place to go. I will never be taking my dog here again. read more

My cat was recently diagnosed with Diabetes, and Dr. Bonnie Kemnitz at Brykerwood has provided me with absolutely no treatment plan whatsoever ! My Dr. completely failed at providing me with even remotely adequate information regarding how to care for my cat. No plan, no paperwork , no instructions I could go back and reference ! Just a brief (5min tops) verbal exchange over the phone, where we rushed over what is a lengthy and arduous process. We briefly glossed over dietary tips, followed by some extremely lackluster training on how to administer insulin injections. She touched very briefly on the process moving forward, again please note that this is a rushed phone conversation and while I did my best to take notes, I struggled to internalize all the condensed Information. Beyond this brief exchange, I was given absolutely ZERO guidance. Days went by and I expected there would be some kind of follow up instructions, surely there would be some kind of email or instructional paperwork they would provide me, there was none. Naturally , I had many questions, so I called the vet asking... "So, what's the plan ?". I was greeted by one of Brykerwood's infamously rude and unhelpful receptionists, who specifically instructed me to email the Dr. with any questions, and made it clear that this was the preferred mode of communication. So that's exactly what I did. I took the time out of my busy work day to compose an email and sent them 6 short questions. I don't believe that I sent an overwhelming amount of questions at all. 6 short and simple questions, just like I was instructed to do. The reply I received was this : "We spoke to the Dr, and she wants you to come back in for an appointment to discuss things further." First, they won't answer my questions over the phone and ask me to send an email, Ok, that's fine ... BUT next they refuse to answer the questions in the email THEY SPECIFICALLY ASKED ME TO SEND THEM ! Never once did they specify there was any limit to the amount of questions I could ask. I would have gladly only asked 3 questions, or 4 questions, ect... But no, there was nothing of the sort communicated to me. They have absolutely no regard whatsoever for the urgency of the situation with my cat, nor do they have any regard whatsoever for the value of my time as a human being who is taking time out of their day to compose these emails that they specifically asked me for ! When I voiced my displeasure with this, of corse, they took absolutely zero accountability for their blunders and instead called me "rude" . Never in my life have I been given a diagnosis from a Vet. and not been given any paperwork outlining a comprehensive plan for treatment. There's the obligatory saying "Follow your Dr.'s plan " Dr. Bonnie didn't provide me with any blueprint or plan whatsoever ! I was completely left to fend for myself with no support at all from my Dr. Never in my life have I experienced such a half-baked system and such a blatant lack of care and preparation from a Vet. I decided to call a few other vets and ask them if it was normal to be given no paperwork guidelines whatsoever after a feline diabetes diagnosis, they all reacted in shock that I was given nothing and simply expected to internationalize all this information over a brief phone exchange. Which immediately confirmed my suspicion that this was totally negligent of them to do. When I spoke up about my displeasure with them , I was met with unbridled hubris and dismissive arrogance . Dr. Bonnie is the single most disgustingly rude and arrogant Dr. I've ever encountered in my life, she doesn't care at all about the quality of care she is providing, and has no regard for the fact that I've spent thousands of dollars at Brykerwood over the course of a decade . Like most vet clinics: it's busy. I have had mixed feelings and experiences. I'm writing this in the event others have similar type issues. I brought my first rescue here in 2006. For some reason I didn't return, I don't remember why - probably cost. Fast forward to 2016 and I brought the same dog in (forgotten I was there 10 years ago) to have him put to sleep - it was gut wrenching but everyone was patient and compassionate, which made it a little easier. So I dislike writing a negative review, but hopefully it will lead to improved care and operations. We brought our fourth street rescue in for evaluation, shots and to get spayed. They estimated her age at 3 months which they said was too young to be spayed. So we called in a month and were told still too young, so we waited another month - and then she went into heat - to which when we received a smidge of "are you dumb? We can't do this now, she's in heat." So we were told to bring her back in a couple of weeks. So three weeks later we brought her back (again missing work) and were told she's still technically in heat and we should wait. Also it would cost $450- $600, which seemed high - but you think you're getting something better or more compassionate- but I don't know. So maybe it's just bad timing but it's too much enough-sorry to say. Hopefully other folks have great care and experiences. We lean on you -the experts- to advise and guide. More communication is better and would have respected our time. Also, a friendly greeting or "good morning" goes a long way when folks are struggling through the door. If you're too busy, scale back an appointment so things aren't as hectic. read more

The GOOD: Dr. Heideman was absolutely wonderful. She is bright, an excellent communicator, gentle and compassionate. The staff is also super friendly and caring. I cannot say enough good things about the people and their kindness towards our fur baby. The BAD: it took several weeks to get the lab results back that we needed in order to get in to see a specialist for our the newly diagnosed cancer. I do not blame the clinic on this, as it is outsourced and they were at their mercy. I do wish, however, that I received periodic updates so that I knew they were keeping an eye out, rather than having to call in every 6 -7 days to check. The facility itself is also badly in need of a remodel and stinky. This is the reason I removed a star, which is being generous. :-/. It is the only reason I am considering not returning, which is a shame because again, the people are SO awesome. I'm sure they would love to have a shiny new place too, if they could. read more

While my pet was healthy it was all fine, but when she started to get sick, it was "try this, try that" with no solutions as my pet slowly got sicker. They never did any blood work. Never. And this went on for YEARS. Never an x-ray. It's fine if they had reached the limit of their medical knowledge, but they should have referred me somewhere better. This clinic used to be very good. Unfortunately, they run through young vets very quickly so you rarely see the same vet. Also, they seem not to care stall about customer service. In COVID, you drive up to a numbered spot and call in to alert them that you have arrived for an appointment. However the system doesn't work, and I've been turned away once because I couldn't get through on their phone system. Another time, I was told I was late and my dog might not be seen. I really wanted to like Brykerwood, but after a misdiagnosis and incorrect vaccination without remorse, on multiple occasions on multiple pets for multiple members of my family, I cannot recommend this clinic. Long story short: I took my healthy and active 13-year-old dog to Brykerwood twice in three days and she was misdiagnosed twice in those two visits, resulting in me spending three days thinking my dog was dying of an aggressive cancer before getting a second opinion. That vet saw no evidence of cancer. Beyond the trauma of believing your dog is dying, it's horrifying to think that the vet at Brykerwood would have performed unnecessary surgery on a healthy dog. I did ask for a refund to cover the new vet costs, but also so they could work to remedy these kinds of issues with their clients in the future. While they did provide a refund, their response left me with little confidence that there will ever be changes to the lack of compassion and empathy shown by the clinic and its staff. We've been taking out pets there for years. My oldest dog has developed hip problems so I sought to get him some PT and needed a referral for the person to help my dog. It's been two weeks and still no signature from the vet. So I called over today and was told "we're really busy and the vet will get to it when they have time". I've never felt rushed - we were in for an appt once with Dr. Biehle when we needed to have one of our dogs put down - it was a very hard decision and we wanted to make absolutely sure we were doing the right thing. This morning I brought my crazy 13 month old golden retriever in to have his nails trimmed. The staff took him back and his nails were trimmed and he was returned to me before he figured out what was going on. The friendly receptionists were quick to get us checked out and we were on our way home. We live in Lakeway where there is a vet clinic on every corner but it is worth my time to drive into Austin to go to Brykerwood. read more

The vets have always been superb and have been compassionate and caring in treating my pets. The front desk people, however, have always been short, rude, and quite frankly, bitchy. As a client that has spent literally tens of thousands of dollars on my pets there over the years, I would hope that they would be a little more friendly and helpful. It really sucks to call them and ask for help and guidance and have the receptionist be rude and unhelpful. This has happened often, and today was just the straw that broke the camel's back. When my cat was diagnosed with Kidney Disease, they provided 6 different samples of prescription food to see what my kitty would latch onto, as well as alternative methods to get her what she needed. My 3 month old puppy ate a piece of fatty bone marrow and it made her sick to her stomach for a few days. I brought her in to this clinic just to get checked out and the doctor told me she was prescribing an anti inflammatory to bring down the inflammation. I had a lot of questions about this drug and she told me it was just an anti inflammatory drug and nothing else. When I almost walked out I asked which pills were which medicine, and the check out girl told me it is actually an antibiotic. How could the doctor give my dog an antibiotic without telling me? She doesn't even have an infection, but I'm mostly upset that she didn't tell me it was an antibiotic, or explain why she would need something like that which can wipe out your dogs gut flora before they are fully developed. If you love it when doctors sneak antibiotics into your pet without telling you, this place is for you. If you think doctors should be cautious about prescribing drugs and you want to know what they are giving your dog ahead of time, think twice before coming here. Also the check out girl literally rolled her eyes at me when I told her they needed to tell people before prescribing antibiotics to their pets. Not a great experience, and will go elsewhere from now on. read more

He has this reputation in the female relief vet and vet tech community. tricia g. mentioned "Cons: Sometimes lackluster front office staff" this usually accompanies the type of behavior described by Remedios and others. Personally, my man boobs weren't of interest to the guy(to my knowledge) but when he wanted to amputate a limb from my pet, I decided to check my instincts and discuss the injury with the head of orthopaedics at Aggieland who said to give it a little time. After having spent about $600 to diagnose that our old dog Smiley was sick, and had masses throughout his abdomen, our vet at Brykerwoods really dropped the ball. She had called to tell us that the sonogram that they ran showed the masses, and basically said that if they were cancerous we would probably have to put the dog to sleep. If not, we could have the larger masses removed, and there would be a possibility that our dog would live a few more years. She told me that they could take a biopsy of his liver, and send it in to the lab to see if there was cancer in the liver. If so, there would be a reasonable guess that his cancer was too advanced to operate. I asked her to go ahead and do the biopsy, and let us know what happened. She said that the results would be back in within a day or two, and that we should decided how we wanted to proceed (I guess having a surgery or putting him down) by the end of the week. We had not heard from the vet by the end of the week. Nor by the end of the second week. I called the clinic, and the line was busy. Another time, the same thing. I emailed the vet directly and asked what was going on with our dog. No response. I emailed a second time to the vet, and finally had a response that she had been out of the office and someone would get back in touch. The receptionist called, and said that they never sent in the biopsy, and asked if we wanted to have him come in and do the biopsy again. We told her no, asked for a refund of the amount for the biopsy that they had already charged us (over $100), and asked for them to prepare copies of the records of both our dogs that had been seen there. My husband went and picked up our records, and we took them to Millwood Vet Clinic, where we actually got some treatment for our very sick dog. Oddly enough, no one at Brykerwoods gave our dog pain medication, or high calorie food--the first step that Millwood took. Our dog had lost almost 30% of his normal weight at the point when we had to actually put him to sleep. I wonder how much less he would have suffered if he had gotten what he needed to eat a little better and to control his pain when we first realized he was sick. Brykerwoods is in a very high trafficked area, and seemed extremely busy. I think with all their busyness, they completely lost track of my dog. read more

After bringing my two dogs to Brykerwood for over 2 years, we finally bit the bullet and moved to Spicewood Springs Animal Hospital. The care we got there was good, but the experience is awful. You don't get a very "personal" experience there--you see a different vet everytime you come in, and they don't remember you from anyone else. You feel like you're just a number there, kinda like bringing your car to some Quick Lube place where you're one of many they see in a day. Just impersonal. The staff at the front desk always seem too busy to help you and rush you through the check-in process, and half the time I feel like I have to ask if everything they've charged me for is something my dogs actually got! So I've bit adieu to Brykerwood and moved on and so far, I'm happy I did. read more

I've gone to Brykerwood on and off for over 15 years with different pets. Recently I had an experience that I just need to share. I have a large breed (mastiff mix). He is all around a super sweet guy, with exception at the vet. During one of our visits, one of the vets was trying to force milky liquid down his throat and he snapped at her. Her reaction was to scream at him, hit him hard IN THE HEAD and lecture me about being more dominant. I did not react or have any discussion with her about what she had done, in the moment. I think I was too shocked that someone in her profession would choose to deal with any animal in this manner. The next (and last) time I went in for what turned out to be a torn ACL, he layed down at the door, refused to budge, was crying, and by all accounts wanted the hell out of there. The same vet had to examine him in the waiting room. I mentioned that I felt this situation was partly due to the fact that she hit him on our last visit. She did not acknowledge my comment whatsoever. Thank God for the kind vets at Allendale Vet Clinic who handled me and my best friend in a completely different manner even though he's not easy in that setting. I will never return to Brykerwood and for those of you who have animals who are scared/aggressive with vets...be ware. Although she clearly did not want to discuss it with me, I am left to conclude she was able to justify hitting my dog with her own conscience. I choose Allendale Vet Clinic. They are kind, calm, and manage difficult situations without violence. I hope Brykerwood reexamines their philosophy and practice with more challenging animals. read more

I have a 6-year-old dog who has been with Brykerwood for the entirety of his life. That said, this isn't one of those reviews that is based on one bad experience. They take care of your animal. I have no problems with that. The part that leaves me fairly angry is the pricing. They price gouge. Over the last three visits, I've decided to take an in-depth peek at the itemized receipt. On every visit, I was given some sort of drug. Two different types of sedatives and one to take care of parasites. I took a peek at the online pet pharmacies for the same drugs, and they were anywhere from 10x cheaper to 50x cheaper PER TABLET. Now I fully understand that I should pay a bit more because it naturally costs more at the office, but that much more is aggravating when it isn't explained. Be weary... That's all. read more

Fantastic care at reasonable prices. It's not very big nor glamorous, but you can sense that the whole staff is in the biz for the right reasons--they truly care about your animule! I think the numerous cards and Thank You letters that cover the place speak for themselves. You don't get a 'regular' doctor unless you request one (we like Allison) but they are all very bright and caring. They also have drop-in hours without a required appt on Saturday mornings in case you can't make it during the week. Our dog's annual visits are much less painful than they used to be and the scale in the waiting room is fun for everyone (and big enough for you too)! UPDATE: b/c I reviewed my old vet place....just thought I'd cut and paste: Brykerwoods is the way to go. They are much more reasonable with the cost of things and I think every doc there has an amazing bedside manner. Especially Dr. Healy who my dog has been crushing on for several years now. read more

We used to bring our dogs here all the time. It was a little expensive, but it was fine. When we got a new dog, we needed to fix her. We called. $600?????? SERIOUSLY??? It's not even a big operation! We called our old veterinarian who was good but was like ten minutes away. They could do it for $100. Wow! We switched right away. Balconies Vet Clinic is where we take the doggos now. They care for your pet, but they are very overpriced. read more
