    Baja fish tacos. (Fridays only)

Tray is a great place for a quick bite during your day. It's hidden pretty well and not really visible from the street. Although it's located inside the bottom floor of the Cal Trans building in Downtown LA, it is open to the public. It's like a college cafeteria setting, where you could pick up a tray, grab your food items and/or order off the hot grill. But since the pandemic started, only the hot grill is open and is only take out at the moment. The staff is really friendly and their service quick. As majority if their customers are working in downtown and don't have that much time for lunch. They are always trying out new food items on their menu. Like their new Birria ramen (see photos). Also, they have daily specials like; Wednesday is "Nashville Hot Chicken" and Friday is "Baja fish tacos" yum!! Everything is made to order and you can customize your order any which way.

I ordered a patty melt and fries, and literally was given strips of meat on bread. Where's the patty? Waste of $12.25. This was done intentionally and I feel disrespected. I will never spend money here again.

I decided to try this place out because it's a 0.0002 second elevator ride down. And I'm glad I did because the breakfast burritos they make are so so good! I come to the office once a week and as honest as can be, looking forward to eating this burrito makes the drive worth it. I always order with bacon, and ask for a mix of hash browns and diced up potatoes. Make sure to ask for spicy mayo! So so good, I think I've found my new favorite breakfast burrito, wish I can have it more than once a week!

Love love LOVE coming here for lunch! I work in the area and my coworker kept telling me about this place. Best in the area to my opinion! Good food, super nice chefs, and reasonably priced compared to what you'd normally see in DTLA. Their breakfast burritos are out of this world by the way!

Daily special - Korean Honey BBQ Chicken over rice, with mixed veggies.

Extremely affordable food with enough variety to make each visit an opportunity to try something new. Recently tried their tomato basil soup and quinoa salad. It was filling and significantly cheaper than Trimana or other lunch places.

The best chicken tenders! Good portion. Great customer service. Favorite place for a quick lunch.

All of the staff are incredibly nice, and for a cafeteria in the middle of downtown, the food is very reasonably priced.

Indoor and outdoor seating available. What they do make is delicious. Pasta, burgers, Mexican, chicken, salads, a salad bar. All affordable. But you may want to plan your lunch hour earlier rather than later (like 11:30). If you have your heart set for a specific menu item, you may be disappointed if you don't get there early. Some stuff runs out. If it's gone, they're not making any more. I've been disappointed to have to make a second choice in a moment's notice on two different occasions in four visits. I only have a 30-minute lunch and have little time for a cook to make something. I'm usually ordering something packed up and ready to go. This would otherwise be 4 stars, but it's 3 because they don't always have what I want.

Sometimes along the way, I find a home, like Public Works. First I had to observe and report, then I had to observe and report, now I have to observe and report. All that observing and reporting makes me hungry and this cafeteria does not disappoint. I've installed custom stainless steel stuff in this kitchen that I cut out and shaped myself! I've checked behind the fridges and coolers, this place is clean. Cafeterias, Cantinas, Chow Halls, all hold a special place in my heart (they feed me). My bosses are hiring again, why they don't promote first? I'll never entirely understand (I work so hard). I hear these candidates asserting themselves, freezing up, oscillating and bending at the waist. I want to tell them there's an obstacle course for laborer applicants, but they aren't laborer applicants because no one starts from the bottom anymore - it's romantic and old fashioned, it's quaint and rustic, it's over. For me it's the classic novel found on a shelf in the middle of the night, devoured like a piece of meat. Ground chuck, ground floor, it's the parking lot below the ground floor actually, it's the shovel and the gravel, the shot put and the post hole digger, anyways I could go on forever about what it is and what it isn't, but this cafeteria though, what they've got is a griddle where the eggs spread thin before hardening, and then the other ingredients can be wrapped inside a cozy egg blanket, and then it all gets rolled up into a tasty tortilla. There's salsa and a salad bar, there are sandwiches and snacks, coffee and juice, don't be afraid, it's only lunch.

Sometimes the food is a bit salty, but otherwise full of healthy options (10 + kinds of salad and veggie dishes) with decedent choices, too (extra cheesy lasagna). It's a self service restaurant, but also expensive. You set your own table and pour your own water glasses. Dinner for two with beverages is easily $85 or more with tip. There are no refills on drinks like iced tea. The upside of it being self service, is you can hang out as long and chat as long as you like. There is good chance if you do linger that you might order desert or a second small $10 iced tea (with tax and tip). It would be quite easy to spend well over $100 for 2, without table service... If it were a little less expensive, I would be a regular... but if it were less expensive then it would be hard to find a table because that whole neighborhood would be hanging out here.

If you're looking for an old-school LA bar with history dripping from the walls, Cole's French Dip…read moreabsolutely delivers. My mom and I came here because Michael Connelly mentions Cole's in his Bosch book series--and we're huge fans--so this stop felt a little like a literary pilgrimage. We came on a Saturday afternoon and immediately felt welcomed. The bouncer was super friendly and took the time to explain how everything works: order at the bar, grab a number, and sit wherever you like. Easy and laid-back. Of course, we came for the French dip--the very sandwich Connelly writes about--and it did not disappoint. Cole's claims to be the home of the original French dip, and honestly, I believe it. We both ordered the USDA Prime beef, which came with a pickle and a side of au jus. The bread was perfectly crunchy, the meat incredibly tender, and once you dipped the sandwich into the au jus... pure harmony. Absolute star of the show. I also had a margarita, which was solid, but let's be real--the French dip is the reason you come here. Even though it's a bar, people under 21 are allowed until 7pm, and there's a pool table if you want to hang out and soak in the vibe. The whole place feels like a time capsule in the best way possible. What a great old-school LA institution. We'll definitely be back.

Possibly because Phillipe's is easily visible and accessible right across the street from Union Station. But that's no excuse! Cole's has way more atmosphere, its dark and mysterious, very IYKYK kinda place. The French Dip lived up to my expectations: absolutely delectable thinly sliced- tender, juicy, and on the perfect roll. Au jus served on the side was on point. Spicy mustard - ask for it! And Oh My get the "Cole's Slaw" COLESLAW- I think this place invented it! Its delicious and I have been known to slip a spoonful on the sandwich... Amazing! Bar is authentically wonderful- bartenders are adorable- friendly and accommodating. Had a stellar cocktail made to order- unforgettable - at that beautiful vintage bar. I hope Cole's can get a reprieve. We are losing ao many authentic Los Angeles icons. Its a shame.

The place definitely gives off those Latin vibes and you feel it once you arrive. As for the food, my boss ordered appetizers for the table, which were shrimp tacos, flautas, and empanadas which were all very good! My favorite were the flautas with guac.
