I stopped in just before the lunch rush--a good strategy, especially on a Dodgers game day--and everything clicked from the moment I walked in. The first thing that caught my eye was Elizabeth carving lamb right off the bone and building my French Dip sandwich in front of me. That's not theater; that's the way they've done it for years, and I loved every minute of it. The lamb dip was outstanding, just as I remembered. Add a crisp pickle, a side of coleslaw, and a Miller Genuine Draft, and you've got a lunch that doesn't need any fancy introductions. The sawdust on the floor may be gone, but the personality certainly isn't. Philippe's still feels like old Los Angeles. People share tables, strike up conversations, and enjoy a meal without anyone rushing them out the door. Then there's something you almost never find downtown anymore--free parking. That's worth mentioning all by itself. Could I explain why I'm giving Philippe's five stars? I suppose I could. Absolute MUST. So much history at this location (literally over 100 years), the invention of the French dip sandwich, and so much to look at. Love the vintage phone booths that they have there (great for photo opportunities), the train room (lots of model trains, plans for the alleged SoCal to NorCal train route) and circus trains too for the clown enjoyers, as well as sports ball memorabilia and merchandise for purchase all around. They have street parking and their own parking lot so keep that in mind. We went right after a Dodgers game so it was quite fisted, but a member in our party was able to secure a table for us while we waited in line to order. Probably 30 people or so ahead of us, but we were able to order in around 15-20 minutes so it's a real testament to how super efficient their cashiers are. Especially since they get all the food ready for you then and there to bring back to your table on a tray. Huge kudos to staff. Crazy extensive menu ranging from breakfast foods, several forms of French dip sandwiches, various sides, daily specials, beer and wine, and other desserts. There's something for everyone here, I feel. We got the: 1) Potato and Macaroni Salad: -I'm a SUCKER for salads that aren't green salads and my boyfriend is too, so this was a must to order. I also got to try the cheesecake and tapioca pudding, which were standard but solid desserts that hit the spot after a deliciously savory and umami filled dinner. I usually hit up Chinatown for lunch when I'm in the area or sometimes, I'll get some taquitos over on Olvera Street, but I never had the chance to try this place until recently. When you get up there, they allow you to have samples, if it's your first time, or if you want to try a little something for yourself. They're famous for their French Dip sandwich, whether you want it soaked once, twice or have it wet. They have other options of meat, such as lamb, turkey, ham or pastrami. They also have a pretty large breakfast menu and lots of tasty homemade desserts. I had the pastrami on rye with swiss cheese and mustard, and it was very hearty, and tasty. I grabbed some coleslaw and some potato salad, too, that were amazing! They definitely got their own brand going on. This is a local hot spot for people to have lunch at before they head up the street to Dodger Stadium. There was ample seating with a variety of tables and chairs, booths, and stools. They also have a water refill station. We kept it classic - beef sandwich on French bread. You can choose between single dipped (top bread slice dipped in au jus), double dipped (both the top and bottom bread dipped in au jus), or wet (bread fully submerged). There are also pork, lamb, pastrami, turkey, and ham options. You can add cheese for an additional charge. We went double dipped since I didn't want it to be too dry or a soggy mess... I wanted it just right! (Call it a Goldilocks scenario). The sandwich comes with a generous amount of beef. The au jus soaked into the bread was delicious - I recommend asking for extra au jus on the side to dip the sandwich in. We didn't (rookie mistake), and the meat was dry. Instead of just dipping the bread, I really wish they also dipped the meat. We happened to visit on free chili day and were given a coupon for a free bowl of chili. You can add cheese and onions to your bowl, and it comes with saltines. It's all meat (no beans) - pretty standard. They have other classic sides like potato salad, macaroni salad, and coleslaw. I can't believe I've never reviewed this LA staple before! I absolutely love Philippe's and as a former Angeleno, I make it a point to stop in for a double dipped beef dip anytime I'm in DTLA. Nothing beats the tenderness of the beef and that incredible aus jus. Philippe's is one of the few places left in DTLA that has its own parking lots. If you don't come at peak times, you might be able to park in the lot behind the building or across the street and if you're really lucky you might even find street parking. If you walk in and see a line, don't worry, the lines move faster nowadays because they take credit cards. The food is delicious. I also want to add that I felt bad coming here without my husband so I took home a french dip sandwich and was worried it was going to be a soggy mess since I live about 35 miles away, but it was fine and the leftovers were good the next day too! I was surprised by this. If you come here when there's a Dodger Game you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be on and there will be fans in their Dodger blue gear watching the game. If you've ever wondered where you can find working pay phones they have them here, but don't get any ideas about placing suspicious or shady calls because the place is almost always crawling with the other boys in blue. My mom ordered the beef dip double dipped with a bag of chips. Both sandwiches were fantastic--mine was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly messy, and my mom absolutely loved hers too. They also have other sandwich options, salads, and sides like potato salad and coleslaw. The pies looked amazing, but I was way too full to grab a slice (next time!). The inside is what really makes this place special though--old memorabilia lining the walls, vintage vibes everywhere, and even old phone booths. It truly feels like stepping back in time. I came here for the first time and it was such a cool experience!!! It was fun seeing such an old restaurant (over 100 years) still succeeding while still having such an old school feel to it. They even have the staff wearing old school outfits to match the vibe. The beef dip was definitely a good choice and was very flavorful. The potato salad was yummy and I liked it better than I expected myself to. The pumpkin pie was a nice finish to the meal. I would definitely come back here and next time would be interested in trying the macaroni salad since it looked really good. read more
